Menzies died.

Not only was he to old to run  (on a track) anymore, he was to old to run (for office).

I forget, Cain was it your man who won the ensuing Leadership contest?

Its quite likely Ming Campbell founded the dynasty.

He wasn't as good as the previous two leaders.  The one before him was an angry drunk man who was hilarious, and the one before that was an ass-kicking, womanizing SBS (UK Navy SEALS) trooper.

No, he didn't.  Lost by 0.4%.  Not that it mattered, I only joined because the University Lib Dem group has close links with Ming, who was at the time party leader.  It was purely motivated by boredom and a need for access to the corridors of power.

Anyone know anything about Ron Paul?  I youtubed him about a week ago and was very surprised that A)he doesn't immediately strike me as a twit B)is actually accepted as a republican party member C)was actually on the ballot this year and D)as far as I can tell so far, actually seems to UNDERSTAND the US Constitution

Most of his voters live in compounds or believe Jews control the USA via the Federal Treasury, he believes in THE FREE MARKET and he only believes in parts of the Constitution.

We have a long history of dealing with Paulbots on a couple of other sites....its more of a cult than a political movement, at the end of the day.  While undoubtedly some people have good reasons for following him and are not obviously insane, they seem to be the minority.  There are much better Libertarians out there (ie ones who actually believe in allowing women to have abortion and not stripping naturalized Americans of their citizenship) and there are better political philosophies out there (ie ones that dont tell you to prepare to take it up the ass from corporations).

Also, amazingly, his supporters found out that spamming his name on 4chan and digg surprisingly didn't translate into anything like Presidential success, and neither did alienating everyone who registered doubt or questions about his policies with cries of "shill" and "Nazi".  A funny thing, that.

And now, many of them seem content to try and bring Barak Obama down, presumably because if they cant win, they want Clinton or McCain ruin the country.
i see.
there is a youtube video out there where he is talking about how a government can never protect individuals from themselves, and the ones who try end up tyrannical.  i thought that was pretty cool for a republican nominee to be saying... didn't know much else though.

This thread may give you an idea of the sort of Ron Paul fans we have encountered.

He's right on the war and related topics, it has to be said.  But then again, so is David Duke and the Communist Party of Korea.  Without looking at his other policies and putting it into context, it doesn't really matter much.

Yeah... Ron Paul has some really good ideas/positions and some real crackheaded stuff. He's published some statements which appear extremely racist. But at the same time, he does seem to have a bit of a clue about the problems with nanny government.

On the flip side, RP isn't that whacky for a Republican... just the current Neo-Con nutjobs currently running the Republicans. In general, a lot of Republicans pre-Regan don't appear nearly as terrible as Republicans today tend to appear.

True.  If Eisenhower ran today, I'd probably vote for him.  And he'd be called some kind of liberal nutjob.

But RP's a different wing from even those.  He's from the libertarian wing, which included the (much more sensible and intelligent) Maury Rothbard, and a few hardcore Randites, and various other strange people.

Yeah, I always keep in mind that both ideologies are ridiculous, but it's hard not to dislike the religious right wing republicans of today a little more.  It's bafflign how they still say they're for the same things they were 50 years ago, when in fact, they are in direct opposition to most of it.  As RAW says, these ain't your granddaddy's republicans.

Aye... sad but true. Of course, they aren't your granddaddy's Democrats either (Thank The Goddess!!!)
