I don't usually go along with this sort of thinking but at this point it might be reasonable to assume that this guy has an agenda and was just trolling from the get-go.

That does seem likely.

I don't, actually, care about him at all. He's just another new guy who may or may not be a troll.

Yeah, I think I've done all I can to help him understand why he's getting the reactions he's getting. He must want it like that, and I don't have time for crap like that.

But what do I know? I hear I'm so stressed out that I'm not thinking straight, and my so-called "opinions" are merely low blows intended to do harm, apparently.

Yeah, that's fair. I couldn't blame him when you put it that way.

New guy, you basically just accidentally decided to be the new guy right in the middle of some family drama. If you can bring yourself to ignore that for awhile and check out the rest of the place you will probably get a much better sense of whether or not this place has something interesting or attractive for you.

He was probably pissed off and behaving irrationally.

Or, maybe he's a complete dick and it just took him a couple days to get around to showing it. Who knows.

I didn't see a part where he attributed their poverty to poor decision-making skills. Did I miss it? I actually don't remember anything in his posts attributing a cause to their choice of the more-unhealthy food.

He's stated that these people make "all the wrong choices...consistently," and (as far as I observed) didn't connect their snack decision to their context.

Bold emphasis added:

So, wait. You're getting upset because destitute people eat sweet food when they have a choice?

I hadn't explored it that deeply actually. What it is is this;

I spend a certain amount of hours a week really putting honest time in with these citizens trying to improve their lives. The problem is, they have made and continue to make all the wrong choices. Consistently. Sometimes it does come down to a choice as small as breakfast.

Obviously I can't fault them too hard, I am the one providing the shit after all. I am the shit supplier, the shit dealer if you will.

Yes, I saw that. What I didn't see was anywhere he attributed their poverty to their making all the wrong choices. I mean, it's not a completely unfair extrapolation given the context, but it's an extrapolation nonetheless... which, ironically, means that you may yourself be making a fundamental attribution error by assuming that was what he was thinking when he made the comment about wrong choices.

People who are in poverty do, indeed, tend to make terrible decisions over and over and over again. It can be really frustrating. There are reasons behind it that are typically not "you're poor because you make the wrong choices", but it is frustrating nonetheless.

In the guy's initial story, he related how the popularity of the Twinkies reminded him of his friend, who prefers chicken McNuggets over real homemade fried chicken. My thought was that comparison pulled the first anecdote (in which he said nothing about people being poor, that only came out when people started mocking him about putting out junk food in the first place) out of the territory of "Those People"ing.

In fact, the gist I got was that he was deploring the fact that the demand for crap food is exactly what fuels the manufacture and sale of more crap food. Give the people what they want, right?

There's no denying that the guy's behavior after that was shit... albeit, somewhat amusing shit. But as far as I can tell there was nothing in his OP or even his attempts to clarify that indicates that he wants to shove the poor into work camps or anything that called for the response he got.

It's not like he suggested something totally asinine, like reverse money, or anything.

I'll be the first to admit that I make the FAE all the time. It's something we have to continually be aware of, so there's a good chance I'm guilty of it myself here.

From what I've seen out of Scilon in this thread, he's focused on judging the decisions of people in poverty as chronically bad (a dispositional attribution, IMO) without taking their incredibly stressful living situations into account.

I'd say he's put undue emphasis on these people's character by focusing on judging their decisions and only remotely acknowledging their circumstances. Scilon only glanced at how he set up this particular choice, there is no comment about how living in poverty may or may not influence the quality of one's decision-making.

I don't know enough Scilon to make character judgements about him and wanted to find out what he thought about the research I posted and whether or not he thinks it applies to his example. He seems like a reasonably intelligent poster that doesn't take himself too seriously, but again, too little information for me to go off of. I hope he sticks around.

What drama happened three months ago on PD?
