Watching { WWE wrestling | American Politics } is my one guilty pleasure. I know the story lines are written ahead of time, and the whole { match | election } is rigged from the start, but the compelling narratives are addictive. I find myself rooting for someone to jump into the { ring | race } and start beating a guy with a { fold-up chair | focus-group-tested zinger } . I know it's all fake and contrived, and there'll never be real { appreciation for | progress in } the arena of { real wrestling | meaningful politics } until we give up our addiction to this fake, over-the-top, badly-acted crap. But I { bought my  season pass | invested in my candidate } and it seems like such a waste to give up now.

I didn't even watch.  I get more foreign policy information from your throw-away jokes than I could have gotten from those two wankers.

But what you didn't get was the look on Romney's face.

retarded rabbit in headlights?

Angry monkey.

He looked constipated, to me.

And, his "attacking ME isn't talking about policy" bullshit got old the FIRST time he tried it.

And it appears that Nigel has been giving Ann Romney some pointers:

Quote
If Mitt Romney is elected, he will be the fourth Republican president in the Reagan regime. That regime is no longer in its glory days. Demographic shifts have weakened the Republican electoral coalition, while Republican politicians have grown increasingly radical and ideological. At best, Romney will be an affiliated president attempting to revive the Republican brand after it has been badly tarnished by George W. Bush; at worst, he will be a disjunctive president, unable to keep his party’s factions together, and presiding over the end of the Reagan coalition.

Throughout his career, Romney has presented himself as a pragmatic, data-driven, hands-on problem-solver. In this respect he resembles our two last disjunctive presidents, Herbert Hoover and Jimmy Carter. Yet in order to secure his party’s nomination, Romney has had to twist his positions to conform to the most radical demands of the Republican base.

I'm not so sure I agree with Balkin's characterization of Romney as a "disjunctive" President.  The Republicans are far more likely to fall in line behind Romney should he become President, because the party is more uniformly ideological and the Republicans care about winning first and passing their agenda second.  No doubt many conservatives will find Romney's various ways to pass his agenda (whatever agenda that may actually be) somewhat obnoxious, but I don't even see a serious primary challenge being mounted against him, should he take the White House.

Romney would in fact probably govern more as a "pre-emptive" President, assuming he could build the coalitions he needed to pass his agenda.  Using Ryan as a fluffer for the House Republicans (I will not apologize for that mental image) will probably get most of them to fall in line with his compromises.  What people forget is that Romney wants power above all...I wouldn't say he is entirely non-ideological, but he will adopt the colours and rhetoric of the people whose support he needs to get something done.  And he will therefore compromise when he has to, because having power is the main thing.
"The thoughts of all men arise from the darkness. If you are the movement of your soul, and the cause of that movement precedes you, then how could you ever call your thoughts your own? How could you be anything other than a slave to the darkness that comes before? Only the Logos allows one to mitigate that slavery. Only knowing the sources of thought and action allows us to own our thoughts and our actions, to throw off the yoke of circumstance."

Precisely. There's a reason why the man will change his politics 24 hours later at a different campaign stop.

This might be a bit of a side note, but I thought I saw it somewhere that the LDS basically try and groom their men to become people like Romney. Any truth to this? I do remember reading an article where a feminist member of Romney's congregation asked him what he thought about abortion, and he basically said, I'm pro-choice because Salt Lake City said it was ok to say that you're pro-choice in a liberal state in order to get political office. So she asked the question again and he's like, "Yeah, I'm pro-choice"--as if he didn't see a difference in pandering and having a legitimate opinion.

Ah, found it:

Quote from: Judy Dushku
I was in China when Mitt launched his Senate campaign in 1994. When I arrived home, the tape on my answering machine was full of messages from the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, and so forth, all saying, “We know that you’re a Mormon feminist and a political scientist and you’re in his ward. You’ve worked in Massachusetts politics around women’s issues. Please talk to us.” I immediately called Mitt’s home, and Ann answered. She encouraged me to go down and visit with him at the campaign office. When I entered the office, there was a table to my right where I saw women from the ward working. I said, “Hi,” and he asked, “What brings you here?” I told him I was interested in politics, that I heard he was taking a pro-choice stance, and that I was wondering if, as a Democrat and fellow Mormon, maybe I could work for him. I wanted to understand his stance better. “Yes, I’m definitely for choice,” he said. And I said, “Great, we agree on that.” Then, he said, “In Salt Lake, they told me it was okay to take that position in a liberal state.” I said, “That doesn’t make me quite as happy. I’d rather know you really believe it.”

The thing that concerns me about Romney, and which I am disturbed that more people are not taking into consideration, is that he's a good Temple Mormon, and that means that he will do his sacred duty of saying whatever is necessary to consolidate Mormon power into the higher ranks of government.
“I’m guessing it was January 2007, a meeting in Bethesda, we got a bag of bees and just started smashing them on the desk,” Charles Wick said. “It was very complicated.”

“People get used to anything. The less you think about your oppression, the more your tolerance for it grows. After a while, people just think oppression is the normal state of things. But to become free, you have to be acutely aware of being a slave.”
