The following remarks have been rescinded (except for the XOXOXO part, which is genuine god dammit), but preserved in its original form for posterity, and as a reminder to me what happens when you go Full Ape and let your feelers get all twisted up.

The best and most honest advice ever given to Discordians and their ilk is to "stick apart." This was true and necessary for a long time before the Internet, and the Internet has not changed the basic necessity of this maxim, though we did for a while stave it off with some impressive accomplishments and exploits. Ultimately, though, Internet Discordianism has the unfortunate and all-too-proven track record of being doomed either to perpetual pinealism and Dadaist bullshit, or to devolving into shit-throwing matches between increasingly hostile and decreasingly sane apes.

This is not a flounce, it's just letting you know that PD has lost its status in my opinion as a community to which it is worth my time to contribute real ideas. Any place where people can be openly declared subhuman, their opinions disregarded and insulted, and the attackers lauded and supported as somehow righteous or justified, is not a community of any real ethical merit.

That being the case, please do not use any content (text, audio, visual, or other) ever generated by me in any kind of publication, online or offline, for profit or not for profit, in whole or in part for any purpose whatsoever if it is connected even tenuously with anything ever produced, displayed, or talked about at PD. In the future, when PD gets a mind to make something of itself and starts wanting to print things or post things on telephone poles, or pull together previous works to compile new ones, please double-check attributions and make sure my name, real or moniker, does not appear there.

It may be that having a thousand people say that in the course of every single fucking year is a sign that there might be some fucking truth to it. I'm not sure what this means, coming from a person who registered a full four years after I did and has not, as far as I know, seen the ups and downs of this "community" for longer than the past couple of years. But I'm sure it means something valid, and I'd hate to belittle it by calling it out for being the complete bullshit that it is.

Honestly, what you are complaining about is -I think- PD.com's best feature.  Every other place on the internet I have been is so restrictive as to what you can and cannot say, and while you seem to be implying that happens here too, it really doesn't.  Do people jump down your throat if they don't agree with you?  Yes.  And, they should.  This forum is about how freedom of speech actually works, rather than how people think it should work.  You say something, and people who don't like it will verbally attack you, it's your job to dance that word tango and state your case clearly, or maybe even listen to the other person and possibly learn something.  Does it suck when a large handful of people jump on you all at once?  Of course, it sucked when it happened to me last and will suck when it happens again, but dude, that's not a bad thing, you are being told by verbal votes that what you say is not jiving with them.  They do not owe you agreement, and you do not owe THEM agreement.

It isn't about most people here, or that free speech gets messy. Its about the volume of these conflagrations and that they drown out and suffocate anything constructive or progressive that might be going on. It is also that this place us full of some of the brightest minds I know and I'm tired of watching those people devolve into monkeys at the first sign of resistance to the preconceved ideas. I include myself in that but that doesn't change the overall reality. As for why I am still here, it used to be because I assumed real work could get done in spite of the bullshit, but now its because its entertaining and its a good place to find shit to post on Facebook.

It certainly seems to be getting worse as time goes on. There's always been a certain capacity for threads devolving into histrionic shitfests but that's always been balanced by intelligent shit, be it thought provoking or just plain smart-funny.

Increasingly that ratio seems to be swinging in the shitfest direction. Maybe this place has nothing interesting left to say. It's kind of a shame, I guess but, who knows, maybe it'll swing back.
