In other news, I wasn't ambushed by MI5 trainees at the office today.  Instead I was given an envelope suspiciously full of cash.  This wasn't my commission, if it was I could quit the school job no worries.  And I'm still not clear what the money is for, precisely.

So it's going to sit in that envelope for the next 6 months, to see what happens next.

This will end well.  I can sense it.

Don't you love it when a Software developer+retailer advertises specific functions of a program as costing $800, but then includes the standalone version of the aforementioned program function in the installation files of the very limited trial version of the program? That shit's the best.  :lulz:

That depends on the EULA, if they are trusting you to pay for it if you are using a trial, it's dumb on their part but its dishonest if you use it continuously.

A lot of companies operate on trust, Like teamviewer, its free version is used and abused by companies around the world, and all they have is a message on exiting the machine saying, if you are using this for business, please consider getting a business licence.

WARNING: this post could be disturbing and/or depressing...

There was a squirrel with no eyes on the corner of my street this morning. I was on my way to work and couldn't find anything to put it in... it was in a state of utter confusion, I tried clapping my hands to make it flee away from the street (it's not exactly a main road, but people tend to zip up and down it at great speeds sometimes), but it approached my clapping sounds, rather than flee. I kicked some leaves and it jumped in the air about 3 feet, then slowly started approaching me again. It had small wounds on its face, I assume from running into things... I myself saw it run into a brick while I was nearby.

The eyes didn't seem to have been eaten out, it was not bloody where they had been, it looked white and fluffy. My sounds to try to get it to avoid the street ended up actually making it run into the street. It avoided 2 cars through sheer luck and somehow made it close to the other side of the street, at which point I sort of wandered away in a state of confusion, shock, and disturbed. I called animal control, but they said it can take up to 2 hours for their people to arrive, and without the squirrel being confined...

I feel like I really let this squirrel down. I'm sure it won't make it through the morning, and probably couldn't exist in nature, but damn... I think I could have done more.

This is going to haunt my day.

Sorry for possibly depressing anyone who read this.

Well, this software doesn't have a personal version at all. The trial is just a severely limited version of the actual software, which has two levels of support. To get the function that I found, you had to buy, not just the product, but the extended version of the product. And the documentation states over and over again that the functionality is "only available in the forensic edition (this is the extended version)." Based on this, I'd assume the installation files for the trial would be limited to only the functionalities outlined for that installation. But they included everything, and simply added the limitation to the GUI. The standalone is a command line tool the main GUI applet would interact with behind the scenes, had I paid for it.

So it seems like the company was just counting on the user not being willing to Google the Manual for the software, and not being curious enough to search the installation files for the file the manual tells you how to access (But only if you "bought the extended version").

Also, I'm not too worried about dishonesty in these cases. Packaging behavior like this promotes poor security and security through obscurity. This flaw was easily avoidable, and should be exploited. Especially since the only people who use this software are usually hackers and cops. Just so happens I needed this software to help out a friend.

The title is nice, and so is the recognition, but it's the filthy fucking lucre that hits me in the feels.

I'm being offered the opportunity to go work in/around Thailand for a couple of years trying to drum up some business/providing technical support for my company.

On one hand that sounds awesome.
On the other hand that sounds hard.

I can't encourage this strongly enough. Will detail reasons if needed but they're pretty obvious.

Wow be unto Tucson, the secret empires ruler has been given more time to bask and gather precious non renewable solar energies for the eventual coup.

Let's face it, the way most states will end isn't nice but some will be more dramatic than others. Florida, for instance will probably just die of old age. Texas to barbarism. Most of the west coast to repo men. Those states to inbreeding. The fate of Arizona has lizards all over it whichever way you look.

I get all tingly thinking about how ultimately some douche attempting to lay you low has resulted in you finding greater opportunity. Glad to hear it!
