Title: MusicGASM
Post by: LordOfganza on August 17, 2010, 10:04:30 PM
As Hedley Lamarr said :
Today "My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought, cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives."

I had another idea. Those here who play some instrument probably have or at least have heard of the Guitar Pro software. Those who have not it's a software where you can easily create sheet music and listen to it, with how many intruments you want but it also has a lot of cool tools to make acurate music for guitar players.
Since it's so easy to use such software we could do something like a collective criation of music through the use of the internet. Someone creates a part of a song (nothing big, just some riffs maybe, 1 or 2 instruments), names it (Prolapse Boogie for instance) and posts it on my new Google Group:
http://groups.google.com.br/group/musicgasm
Then, someone else downloads the file and adds or changes what he whants, and so forth. At some moment we can all decide that it is finished so i'll make a backup copy of the history of teh song (each of the previous files) and leave the final version, so that it doesn't take up much space.
It doens't have to end there! Us who have recording devices (having or not a band) can record themselves playing the songs or part of the songs and post there also! Maybe, if someone here knows how to use cakewalk or whatever, different people could record parts of the song and them it can all be mixed into one file.
How I thought it can be organized:

I really like this idea.

Both Alphapance and I have, separately, tried to start one of these in the past. I digress.

I've been itching to collaborate with someone lately. Incidentally, I use GP and has recording
software. For audio hosting, I've found what I think are some of the most awesome sites ever:

http://www.soundcloud.org         < my fav...

http://www.indabamusic.com/

http://ccmixter.org/           < this one is actually already close to your idea. Creative Commons music mixing and editing.

I know that Alphapance and RWHN play instruments. They'd probably know better than I who's musical on the board.

Great!

Good to know that someone is interested in this! If you know more people down here who would like it, I would appreciate if you could point them to this thread. I that with 2 people we can already work, but the more the better!

I still haven't heard all of the Spider Project but as a collaborative piece it impressed the crap out of me.

I like this idea. I play guitar. I could do something for it.

Can we use other software apart from guitar pro? Because I am a musician(kind of) and I use fruity loops and a lot of software synths.

My Thoughts:

The simplest way of universalizing this would be to use an audio format for sharing, instead of a Guitar Pro file.
That way, anyone who has audio editing software can Use/Edit the other sound files, regardless of most formats.

Also, for those that don't have audio editing software, obtaining free software (like Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/))
allows more people to potentially participate.

Also also, you can simply DO more with audio programs than you can with Guitar Pro.

Personally, I like Guitar Pro and and have used it a lot in the past, But I wouldn't expect many people who aren't
familiar with it to learn how to use it. Ofganza, if you want to do something strictly Guitar Pro, i'm down with
that, too. I used to use guitar pro for midi writing, then messing with the midi in Fruity loops and Cool Edit Pro.
Fun, if sophomoric, times.

I'd suggest using wav files to share.  Preferably in unmixed as well as mixed format, that'd give us a way to play with it lots.

I definitely want in on this.

Wow, more people, nice!

I agree with the audio editing thing too. I'll download this Audacity and learn how to use it. I would like to use the guitar pro idea as well, as another possibility. Although I know that real audio recording is great for adding things on he spot, nothing beats guitar pro in the art of creating songs and sheet music so you can record it AFTER you really shaped it nicely.
Yeah, we definitely should have both projects and see how they go. If one of them seems not so cool, we just stop doing that. Also if some other idea shows itself, we should try it as well....
If I get the job I'll interview to tomorrow I'll send my guitar to some regulation, cleaning and etc and we could absolutely get started. We have more than enough people to start and show the other possible collaborators that this works!

Audacity, eh? I haven't used that in a while, but I did make this screwing around with the program when I was 14: http://files.myfrogbag.com/2anzvrh7sm7705x/experiment1autoplay1.swf
You might want to turn your volume down. It's pretty jarring.

I don't know why, but I really like it. Maybe it's from listening to too many chiptunes.

I'd be willing to do this, but from experience I've found that without some indiviual restraint, the whole thing becomes an unworkable mess fairly quickly.

Each contributer should try to limit themselves to one small idea at a time.  It's difficult, because most creative types will want to run with it.  Don't.  Let each person add a tiny bit.

hear that, I'm definitely a runner.

I think we'll need some sort of rules. but it might be best to make most of them as we go.

I also think that we'll need some real organization. Just Some. This coming from someone who's organizational system is
usually remembering where he set something down.

If we use Audacity, you can count me in. A lot of people play guitar so, in the interest of not having a guitar cluster fuck I can switch to mandolin or keyboard for this.

I agree with the rules part, but it's impossible to create good ones before this thing starts rolling....
I would like all of your opinions on the subject of the avaliability of the google group to others. We can make it totally public, public to see but not to post (only members, appears to be the best option) and posting only by admins
Or maybe you think that we don't need the group at all, lets think about this
Title: Re: MusicGASM

Before setting up rules/guidelines, let's just try it out once, to see what happens.

is http://groups.google.com.br/group/musicgasm the group we're using?

If so, I will post a simple 32 bar drumbeat loop there, and get things rolling.

Please confirm.

I was able to DL from ifile. Nice drum beat.

I was actually in the middle of doing rhythm guitar for the track, when my girlfriend came home crying over
problems with her car. it was pretty simple guitar work, though, so I'll see if i can hammer something out before
work, instead of fapping to PD.

Since this is the 'no rules' edition of this GASM, if you all want to work on it at the same time, and then throwit all together and try to Lo5 it into shape later, I say do it.

This might become a 20-minute epic piece of spaggotry, but then again, that might be a good thing.

Incidentally, the current tempo is 110bpm.

Now, It's not mozart, or anything, but:

http://soundcloud.com/philly_fillet/sets/hand-of-eris-round-1-part-2

The site is pretty good, IMO, and you can even make a group that keeps track of tracks.

I recommend reducing the amplitude on the Mixdown track before making the next mixdown.
Also included my rhythm, minus the drums, for any potential use, corrective or otherwise.

My electric is out of commission at the moment, so it was my acoustic. Then I ran that through a distortion filter in Cool Edit Pro for
a crunchy sound.

By the by, My track is in E minor, if anyone finds that useful.

I will. I usually play guitar by ear, but since I opted for mandolin, I'll have to know that.
Sounds like a little bit of delay too.

I like the effect. I think that the only problem with it though is that the guitar comes out a little quiet. When I get to the mandolin later this week, I'll compensate for that.

You want the guitar louder?  It's easy enough to do, but that amount of distortion and reverb will tend to mask the other tracks, especially if we keep layering tracks.

No, I think that the volume is good as it is. It's just more of an auditory illusion. It's just something that I'll keep in mind so that I don't muddle it up. I was thinking of running the mando through some effects, but if I do, it will be more of a subtle thing. Maybe small amounts of flanger or something.

It was a good mistake. :)

Something that might be interesting is not to redo it, but accompany it to bring it out more. Maybe not totally clean, like, maybe have a mild overdrive with the gain turned up a little.

Also bear in mind that I haven't slept since yesterday (barring that 10 seconds earlier today), so I may or may not be making a whole lot of sense right now anyway.

I think that I have something in mind for this. I'm new to mandolin, so if it sucks, I can scratch it and try again or add keyboard instead. I'll try and recording on Friday. I know what I'm definitely doing for the second riff, but the first riff I'm stuck on whether or not to play just a Em G Em Am Em progression or if I should try and do a little lead bit.

If the second riff is what you know you want, do that now.  If you want to add something else later, do it later.

This is more to my liking:

http://soundcloud.com/philly_fillet/hand-of-eris-compuslice

I kept the Bass And Git track, used my rhythm track as a noise reduction profile and made a composite track from three levels of noise reduction: the original, for the bass and kicks; a half reduced track that get's a bit poppy on the drums; and a mostly reduced track that turned the guitar into computer chip sounds from a bad 70's movie.

Then I mixed those and did clean guitar with light chorus over the top.

Thoughts on Hand of Eris with mandolin?

And are we ready to start on the next track? I like this sort of thing, and LordOfganza hasn't done anything with this in a while (and he apparently logged in today), so I'm assuming that we're good to go for number 2. I'm ready for Alphapance, Sulfide and myself to kind of inherit this if he doesn't post here in the next week.

Also, what would we like to do with these tracks when we're done? I figure that they are probably copyleft and just up for distribution, as long as there's either credit given or a link back to PD. Correct me if I'm wrong.

s'not bad for not having an idea to begin with. i think it might be good to have an ever growing selection of pieces to

Did you, by chance, save a file of just the mandolin?

Im here!
Sorry, it's been a while since last time, but I am busy doing my final project at my MBA so I have little time. The problem with this forum is that you stay away for a couple of days and there is like dozens of new stuff to read and you get lost forever, lol.

I sent my guitar to get cleaned and adjusted to a new gauge (.10) and will get it back next week. Then I will be able to collaborate with the project per se. Do we have something interesting already? Where are you posting the stuff by the way?

PS: Yeah, I was rubbing the chub some days ago, but not anymore. lol

I doubled the pre-mandolin track, pitch shifted the bass,
chopped the mandolin, and gave it a few minor delay tweaks.

oh, and i glitched out the drums...sounding vaguely Aphex Twin.

also included: a second track (Musical Snuff Box) below the main one.
I basically just took the whole thing and sped it up x2 for shits.

Is it perfectly 2x?  Because we could get a rhythmic canon going.

Post by: Iron Sulfide on September 13, 2010, 08:30:07 PM
no, it's a half step short of an octave.

i can make it a perfect octave, though.

But do the beats line up?
Title: Re: MusicGASM
Post by: Iron Sulfide on September 13, 2010, 08:35:58 PM
erm, listening to it now, i think it's actually more than an octave. i was basically making a bunch of
edits and saving the successive results as new files, so it's hard to tell from memory.

i resampled the tempo and pitch, so the beats, currently won't mesh, but i can fix that.

In my mind, and for what I'm thinking of doing, the pitches don't matter as much as the rhythm.

this one is an octave and and double tempo (220bpm). rhythm should match up:

I've got some catching up to do on a couple of things too, but this is on the list.
I was waiting for another drum beat or something.

I mixed the Aphex Tweak with the 220 bpm track, and added a keyboard sweep.

Please note that somewhere in the Aphex edit, it appears that we have wandered slightly from the tempo.

I did notice that a little.

when i was editing it, i used part pitch shift, part resampling to get those effects.

also, apologies for my impatience earlier. I know better.

I've also been thinking of starting a new track, with a few basic rules.

I'm open to suggestions for the rules end. I'd like to keep them pretty minimal.
the best one i've considered so far is  along the lines of participants using only
instruments that they aren't especially skilled with. that would take guitar away
from myself, for example, but would leave piano, drums, my mouth, tin cans, etc...

thoughts? (The tentative title for this track would be "Illusion of Order")

Title: Re: MusicGASM

So, are we done with the current one?

To have more than one going on at the same time would be detrimental to both.

Title: Re: MusicGASM

done? don't have to be. Hand of Eris, IMO, is just starting to take shape.
I think i might turn it into a rap...

I would like to be prepared for the next one, though. rules suck for many reasons,
but what I like about them is they force one into creative avenues they might otherwise not take.
and agreeing on even the most arbitrary rules can be somewhat time consuming.

but yes, I agree with keeping it one track at a time.

I kinda like that rule. It was tricky for me to figure out what I would be doing for the mandolin, so I'll probably keep at that for this for the time being. It does kinda help because its easy to fall back on familiar patterns with something you're good at.

Listening to this right now, good call on the keyboard sweeps and mixing the 110 and 220!

Not sure if there's anything further for me to contribute to Hand of Eris for the time being, unless either of you have any suggestions.

I can add drum beats into the mix for future pieces now. Downloaded Hammerhead.

If we've established the rhythm track, why not add a melody, or some lyrics or something?
Title: Re: MusicGASM
Post by: Iron Sulfide on October 07, 2010, 08:25:13 PM
lyrics are in progress. i have no chorus, and need to draft it a few times, maybe.
(maybe someone else could write the chorus, not knowing what I'm writing???)

it seems, as more time passes, that I have more to do in my life, and less time to do it with.

i'll be a bit slow to respond myself. But i'm still here, so don't count it as bailing.

Suppose I could give it a go. Which particular section are we designating as the chorus.

Whichever one you want, naturally.

If we disagree, we'll just lift it and put it somewhere else.

Cool, I'll try to give it a shot Friday night. Have to do band related stuff both tonight and tomorrow night. Oh, dude, are you interested in going to the Middle East show btw? It's a week from this coming Sunday and I'll see if I can get tickets to you before then if you are.

Obviously, I missed my deadline on this. I can give it another go if you like, but perhaps either LMNO or Sulf could throw me an initial line for the chorus to start off with. To add to the unpredictability of it you can send it to me via PM.

i'm going with the rap angle. I've got most of the lyrics for two verses. I should be able to record it tomorrow. I'm thinking it's going to need some of that generic hip-hop background filler, like people saying "what what?", only not 'people saying "what what?" '

instead of giving you some of the lyrics, though, i'll just say that it's about "discordian activities"- however you want to populate that category...

And I like the dice idea. I've had a few more ideas for future tracks, if we make it there...i'll bring them up then, though.

Mixdown with vocals and the vocals, solo. not really a fan of my own voice, BTW.

There's still time for the chorus.

I think at that point you can do whatever you need to help the flow.  Even William Burroughs edited his cut-ups after the fact.
