But when Thurston Moore played at my school I wanted him to play music - not a solid hour of screetching guitar feedback. No exaggeration. I'm sure it was very avant-garde or something, but it was an awful show.
Really? I would've loved that. I think my favorite Sonic Youth tune is Diamond Sea, the uncut version, all 20 minutes of it including the feedback-drenched interlude and outro.

I had the same exp. at a festival a few years back. Mind you, it was the best damn screeching guitar feedback ever. I think I even invented some kind of screeching guitar feedback dance moves, but they're long forgotten. It probably would have sounded worse except they followed an acoustic set by Beck. Or was it Sonny Bono? It was a fun festival anyway.

Although, I kind of agree with you. I'm thinking, when I have some free time, of putting dub/trip-hop beats underneath cacophony. Maybe I could do some of those "versus" projects, where I take other people's noise, and turn it into something more rhythmic.

awesome. i did a short research project on "patterns in nature" in my Introduction to Computational Science course.
we got a bunch of differential equations that simulated so called "reaction-diffusion" chemical reactions, that could produce patterns like this, if you tweaked them correctly.
i know that it looks like this because it grows like this, but it grows like this because of a reason, and that reason is nearly all these patterns are somehow somewhere based on a Gray-Scott (http://www-swiss.ai.mit.edu/projects/amorphous/GrayScott/) reaction-diffusion system.
ok we didn't have time to try out all different kind of formulas, so we only got the most easy-to-acquire patterns, which are the blobby shapes you also see in the link above .. but what was my surprise when i was watching a friend's tropical aquarium, and see a fish swimming around with the exact same pattern i just simulated in my experiments (http://www.flickr.com/photos/37985735@N00/107972035/)!! w00t
the coolest thing is, it had two main parameters, and by tweaking those we could make the spot-patterns on the tail, the stripe-patterns on the body and the maze-patterns on the nose, all out of one formula.
