Title: INTERMITTENS 8: Self Reliance
Post by: Shai Hulud on January 11, 2010, 10:12:06 PM
I'm taking it upon myself to spearhead another INTERMITTENS.  I believe there is some pretender out there who is also claiming to be working on an Intermittens 8, but I'll believe that when I see it;)  But we can call this one Ocho or something to distinguish it.  The theme for this one is "Self Reliance," however you want to interpret that, be it survivalism, fallout shelters, drinking your own pee, criticism of groupthink, whatever.  I'm not going to be putting my own comics in this, but I'll be happy to provide an illustration or two if anybody needs one for a story.

Here's a few things I'd like if anybody wants to volunteer them:
Stories and lots of them
Nonfiction
Comics
Fake Ads
Cover art (If there are multiple submission I'll put it to a group vote)

As usual, it will be totally public domain and nonprofit.  I'm planning to release it as a pdf.  Anyone interested?

oh cool! I've been itching for another Intermittens.

stuff which you could use.... hmm.... off the top of my head:

Richter wrote some articles ("CRAZY PREPARED") which sound right up this issue's alley-hole
http://www.principiadiscordia.com/blog/category/crazy-prepared/  - I think a lot of that originated ITT (http://www.principiadiscordia.com/forum/index.php?topic=19403.msg647300#msg647300).

And I'm sure we'll see some 'jangles in there, no?  :D

if you're hunting for source material, a good place to sniff is the BEST OF PD (http://www.principiadiscordia.com/forum/index.php?topic=23073.msg783783#msg783783) thread, and the Insightful Post Dump (http://www.principiadiscordia.com/forum/index.php?topic=18464.msg611214#msg611214).

For a while, people were dumping original art into the Kopyleft / Creative Commons Art (http://www.principiadiscordia.com/forum/index.php?topic=18902.msg629086#msg629086) thread for use in Intermittens. So you can grab anything in there too.

Let me know if you need any help! I'll be happy to assist with supplying text, layout, or graphics.

Write about canning or something.

Wait no... write a slightly creepy piece from the delusional mind of a woman who does all these survivally things because it's the only thing that brings her joy anymore. A monomanic for canning and stocking up on liquor and bullets.

I have a story in my head, but it is waiting for some quiet time to actually write it. It might not be for a while, because now that I have an assistant my days are largely occupied with actually working, and evenings with kids and friends, who all seem to be suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder or something because they're all depressed. Not the kids, the friends.

A little more spacing around the title would be good, but then you'd have to shrink the font a little, or at least put the title diagonally.  Tricky... But I do like the "Wait, is that a dismembered head in the corner?

Thanks everybody, I agree with the consensus that the title's too big, I'll shrink the font a bit when I work on the final product.

MMIX, I found this painting just flipping through random images on wiki commons yesterday.  It's by a fellow named Lucas Cranach, who I had never heard of before, and it's based on the Bible story of Judith and Holofernes (which I had also never heard of before, pretty badass though).  I figure nothing says "self reliance" like a fancily dressed lady holding a severed head.

That's an awesome painting, I'll work it into the interior someplace, maybe as an illustration for a story.  Since I've been working on this issue I've realized how awesome wikicommons is.  And most of what they have there is public domain.

Check out this little illustration by Goya:

You did, but technically you need an umlaut on the o, Möbius, so it's almost like a metal band:)
The cover is still a WIP so it may be changing, also if anybody submits cover art I may have to switch altogether.

BTW, I love everything I've gotten so far, lets keep the submissions coming everyone!

How about this:

My friend from Lopez used to say that when she was young, there were rumors of a wild girl in the woods north of School Road.

People would catch glimpses of the girl at the edge of the road or running the pebbled beaches where the sand dollars grew, thickly stacked in drift-like ridges rippling along the shoreline. By the time they got close, she would have melted back into the underbrush, and there was no sign of her.

My friend always said she was surprised we never ran into each other, all those years of growing up in the same place. I am not surprised.

I used to have more than this, these jars of preserves. My shelves are full of them, in my kitchen and my basement. All manner of things I grow in my garden, sweetened or pickled or salted and canned, saving me from the ordeals ahead. My cackling, busy hens give me eggs and I pickle them with beets, making them magenta-red as pokeberry juice.

I had children once, and even longer ago I had a husband. I had lovers for a while after that, and friends, many friends. But I had to prepare, and the more prepared I became, the more I realized I was short on time; there could be none wasted for these other things. My children visited for a while. I would ask them to bring me things from my list, things we would need when the time came. Rope, salt, matches, oil.

I told them they could stay with me when they needed to, but their visits grew less frequent, and then they stopped coming at all. I filled their rooms with jars of fruit, apricots and applesauce and blueberry jam.

In the basement I have rice and beans and flour, sealed in plastic and stored in chests against the hard times coming. I have dried meat and cases of whiskey, aspirin and bandages, wire and twine. I have enough corn to last my hens a good while. I know I'll need things to trade, so I've stocks of cigarettes and wine.

In January, my pulse quickens, thinking of how soon it will be time to dig the rich black earth and cultivate my garden for a new year. In the fall I harvest seeds to plant again, heirloom plants that will sustain me forever. I nurture and feed the delicate seedlings, and in the summer the heavy, full fruits of my labor fall into my palms. Standing in my garden I eat green beans from the plant. I press the turgid skin of tomatoes, warm from sun, against my lips. I fill my basket with cucumbers and carrots.

My bedroom is where I keep my guns and boxes of ammunition. Where my lover once lay is a Winchester M70, extra bullets in the drawer of  the bedside table. I remember the last man to grace my bed, but he never brought me the comfort of a good gun. I caress the heavy, oiled wooden stock in my sleep, and I feel safe.

Figured I'd give this a shot. I'm not sure on how I feel about this myself, but, hey, it was worth a shot. If you feel like it's almost there, let me now what I should fix up.

What it Means to be a Self-Reliant American in 2010-20XX
or
Why the Youth is Doomed

I know what to do in any given situation. I am completely idependant and self reliant. Some people say that I wouldn't last any more than thirty-two seconds during the "Zombie Apocolypse" (whatever that means), but I'm a full eighteen years old now, and you know what? That makes me an adult. And we all know that adults are all in complete control of their lives. You can't tell me anything that I don't already know, and like I said, I know what it means to be self-reliant. For instance: When I'm hungry, I drive to the closest TGI Fridays and order my fave, Jack Daniels Chicken strips (Nom Nom, lolol). If I'm really starving, and I'm too weak to drive, I just order pizza or chinese, and it's there in a flash! Some people ask what I would do if, say, my car broke down, but seriously, they must be either busting my balls or just downright incompetant. I trust my mechanic to fix my car, and I drop it off there all by myself.

These same people, though, are really persistant. They asked me what I would do if my clothes got ripped or torn, how would I protect myself from the enviroment? These guys are soooo dumb lol. I'd go to Old Navy and get new clothes! And I doubt there's anything some stupid zombie could do about it. After that, these people asked me "what if there are no more Old Navy's?" (as if that could ever happen) I just said "Hollister!" while stuffing my face with an Auntie Anne's specialty pretzel (I swear to God, I don't now what I would do without pretzels! I think I might die!)

I think after that, they started to get angry. I think they started to feel dumb for asking so many stupid questions, because they started asking me what I would do if I were in immediate physical danger. Well, funny joke on them, I called the cops! Everyone knows that you're supposed to call the police when you're in danger! Now these dumb people won't bother me any more and I can spend my time being self-reliant, right in front of my T.V.set. Just as soon as my mom finishes making dinner...

copyright shmopyright! It's an instructional image from 1951! and an ad for insurance to boot

(c) is probably owned by Mutual of Omahah (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mutual_of_Omaha), who are probably not lurking around the net looking to protect their 50 year old magazine ads from being reprinted. I say finders keepers!
:pax:

I agree though that it should be edited / shopped / somehow re purposed. Chopping off that Mutual of Omaha ad at the bottom will go a long way to ensure nobody's gonna come knocking for royalties or something.

Royalties? for a free magazine? hah!

You're right about chopping off the M of O stuff at the bottom, and repurposing the images with some new and humorous dialogue poking fun at the cold war era paranoia, with all new post-cold war paranoia.  I'll work on this.

Ok, I'm going to be aiming at releasing this issue of Intermittens either before or on Valentine's Day, depending on how long layouts take.  So I want to make a deadline of January 31 for submissions (although I am flexible, if you have a great idea and need a little more time just msg me and we'll work on it on a case by case basis).  Other than that, thanks to everybody who has submitted stuff or given me permission to use stuff, you are all awesome!

I need to make minor edits to my piece you want, Guy.  I'll let you know when they're done, though I'll try to complete them by tomorrow evening if possible.
Title: Re: INTERMITTENS 8: Self Reliance

@Cain, thanks that sounds great, just send me a msg or an e-mail whenever you've got it done.  By the way, would you mind if I included five or six of your Rules for Life, to use as a recurring "Cain's Rules for Life" piece throughout the issue?

@Ratssinis, thats a good question, so far between material that has been submitted specifically (in hand) and permissions I've gotten for previously written material, I've got a grand total of:

Stories/Articles
The Parable of Steve and the [untitled story] Apocalist (plus illustration), by Nigel
The Voice and the Void, by Xila [Reyna Perucca]
What it Means to be a Self-Reliant American in 2010-20XX, by dimo
The Year of the Rat (#TBD), by TGRR
The Crazy Prepared Series, by Richter
[The Fascist Virus, The Deep State by Cain]

Graphics/Comics
Dystopic Deedee, by Effigy Power
Prof. Peculiar, by Vonny Nasamoto
Nuclear Holocaust Instructions (http://i45.tinypic.com/ib9xls.png) by The Ratssinis
And also, I have permission to use illustrations by Cramulus, Hoopla and Lysergic, and possibly the nuclear parody by Enki.

I am also waiting on content/permissions from a few other people.  I don't want to use anything without specific permission, even off the free content threads, so if I can't get a hold of somebody for permission I won't be using it.

It seems like it's looking pretty good for now, although I'm still hoping to get a couple more fiction/articles.  I'm pretty set for illustrations and such, if it turns out I don't have enough to pad the issue there is tons of public domain stuff out there.  Although if anybody wants to submit more of those there is plenty of room.

I'm still planning to get it out by Valentine's Day, but if you've got a great story that's going to take just a bit longer to finish, let me know and I'll be happy to work with you.

I only made minor edits to the post itself, so you should be able to cut and paste it from the OKM posting again.  I clarified a few points and changed some words in places, it was very minor repair work.  And that second bit sounds like an excellent idea, I say go for it.

I'll start getting stuff done in earnest on Sat week, but probably a PM here is the most efficient way to contact me if you have anything in particular that you see fitting in with the themes.

Guy, I thought you might want to know:

Issue 8 was recently added to scribd's "rising" list. I think that means that it got enough hits in a short period of time that they're giving it more exposure. As I understand it, if it gets enough hits in the next week or so, it'll be on the Featured page.

Cainad's issue, issue 5, was featured and got like a thousand downloads in two days. So I've got my fingers crossed for ye.
