Title: Muslims, police scuffle at Rye Playland

QuoteRye Playland was shut down Tuesday after cops scuffled with Muslims upset that women wearing head scarves were barred from the rides, witnesses said.

Fifteen people, including three women, were charged with disorderly conduct and assault in the chaos, authorities said.

The article goes on to say that...

QuoteThe ban, which is not Muslim specific, was imposed about 3 years ago mostly to prevent hats from falling onto the tracks of roller coasters and other rides, park officials said.

I don't think that's going to fly with this one though.

Hijabs don't fly off like ball caps do.

Park officials prolly didn't know that.

Hijabs don't fly off like ball caps do.

QuotePeter Tartaglia, deputy commissioner of Westchester County Parks, said the Muslim American Society of New York was warned in advance of the rule barring head scarves on rides for safety reasons.

"Part of our rules and regulations, which we painstakingly told them over and over again, is that certain rides you cannot wear any sort of headgear," Tartaglia said. "It's a safety issue for us on rides, it could become a projectile."

Also, having 30 feet of silk come partially unwound by wind and get wrapped around the axle can lead to insurance problems.

See now that was the first thing I thought of, was that if it got caught in something not only could that person be decapitated but a lot of people could end up seriously hurt or dead.

It's really hard to recover from dead no matter who you worship up in the sky yanno?

wow, I live right near there. Last time I was house hunting, I actually looked at an apartment that was within sight of Rye Playland.

Glad I didn't move there though. It's a reallllly violent neighborhood. Lots of gangs and muggings. There are murders there like every other month. The cops there are prepared to step on your neck first, ask questions later.

It's weird because Rye NY is actually a pretty nice place. It's just the area around the playland that's super dangerous.

Also, I'd just like to add that I want the 17 year old minimum wage kid making safety decisions on a case-by-case level.

On the other hand, the cops were pretty quick to beat someone's ass.

It's Eid...those guys were probably looking to have a good time at a theme park.  *shrug*

...just read the op article, and yeah, they asked for a refund--they should've been given it and escorted out.

stupid.  on both parties' sides.

Yeah...but when were they given them?  Before or after the violence? The article doesn't say--so did they peacefully hand them out and then they needed the 100 cops that responded because a riot of hijab-wearing mommies with kids in strollers made the place suddenly unsafe for all?

I'm betting not.

I'm betting it was once 15 people were carted away, their kids and grandmothers crying, that the ticket counters all of a sudden opened up and gave out the refunds in rapid-fire fashion.

The Muslim organization that organized the event should have checked the park's rules before inviting 3K people there, half of whom wear headscarves.

As to the WEARING of said scarves, it's more of a cultural preference these days, religion's just used as a placeholder excuse.

According to the link, the park told the organization that arranged the outing, several times.

Yeah, but that doesn't mean they believed them.  Or paid attention--I'm blaming the organization for that, not the park, dude.

I think the organization set the people up, the park overreacted, and so did the people who were told "rules is rules."

Just as I think that an employee suddenly started enforcing rules that day, in an amazing coincidence.

To me, this is a non-issue.  It's just primates doing their thing.  If everyone's an asshole, I don't feel the need to take sides.

Yeah, not taking sides--I think BOTH sides were assholes.

I do think it's interesting, seeing the evolution of integration of Muslims in a "free-er" society (a lot of European laws strictly forbid wearing headscarves in public)...but that's about it.
