a couple of years ago people in europe got to vote whether they wanted a european constitution or not. when the population of the netherlands appeared to vote against it in a fairly large majority, (some of) our politicians started making TV ads to convince the people to please vote for this constitution.

this one was in particularly bad taste. it shows images of the holocaust, Srebrenica and the terrorist attack in Madrid with the text "this never again", followed by some politician urging you to vote for this constitution!

after the first broadcasts on some local TV stations, the ad spread like wildfire on the internet (thanks to geenstijl.nl), the total and immediate outrage caused this ad to be pulled of the air within a matter of hours.

(afterwards, the Dutch people voted no, and a while later the politicians used some sort of loophole to do what they wanted to do in the first place, anyway)

I can't think of anything, but I'm sure some of our more politically involved posters can.

Anybody want to enlighten me to my country's faux pas?

In a ceremony in Canada's Parliament building on Jan. 6, Native leaders and government ministers pledged to work together to try to heal the damage done to Native people and their culture. Indian leaders condemned the government for its 80-year program of taking children from native families and sending them to often abusive government-run schools.

Also, while these kids were at the schools, they were forced to live with christian foster parents for 10 months of the year.  This is where I suspect most of the abuse came from.  In fact, one of my fathers best friends growing up was one of those native children.

Other than the Beothuks, which were largely killed off before Canada existed as a nation, when was there ever a genocide in Canada?

Every country/government ever has pulled that stunt.  I know some Roman senators got to power by convincing other romans that Carthage was SRSLY SRSLY a big threat and needed to be wiped off the face of the earth.  Every side in WWII had their own version of the 'never again' slogan.

OK, incidents I can remember.

UK:

Our government built up its case for the Iraq war on a 10 year old MA thesis they stole off the internet.

MI5 followed the 7/7 bombers for months, apparently decided that they weren't a threat, let them kill 50+ people and the government decided this is not worth an enquiry.

According to the SCOPA Law, wearing LOLCAT t-shirts outside Parliament is a form of political protest that can result in arrests without police permission being obtained for such a protest.

The wholesale pandering to the Daily Mail and Sun newspaper editorials when it comes to policy on law and order and immigration.

Our government trying to defend the actions of successive governments in ethnically cleansing the population of Diego Garcia to make way for a US airbase, and attempting to defeat rulings that the action was unlawful.

Providing support for CIA rendition flights.

Our government cravenly backing down from the BAE corruption investigation after the Saudi Arabian government threatened our civilian population with "more 7/7's" should the investigation continue.

Australia:

Little Johnny Howard, ex-Prime Minister crowing about Australia's capture of the entire Iraqi Air Force (which had taken no part in the war, was mostly stolen by Iran in 1991 and was actually found by an Iraqi who led Australian troops there).

The Cronulla beach riots being written off by Little Johnny Howard as a result of "drinking", totally dismissing the racist element of the Australia First party and skinheads who helped initiate the violence.

Little Johnny Howard accusing immigrants of throwing their children off of a boat, then refusing to apologize.

Attacking Kevin Rudd for issuing a government apology to the Stolen Generations of Aborigines who were taken from their parents (often for nothing more than racist reasons) by government agents.

The Liberal party handing out fake leaflets from an invented Islamic organization saying that Labor supported the Bali suicide bombers.

The Liberal government being prepared to deport 43 Papua New Guinean asylum seekers, who faced death at the hands of genocideal Indnonesian backed death squads if they returned.

That part was actually funny.

Quotethe fact McCain is saying we might be in Iraq for another 100 years, and people seem "just fine" with that
He actually back-pedaled on that recently and said 2013 instead.  Not that it'll matter since the world is gonna end in 2012.   :fnord:

The way Sadaam was executed

Yeah, I had issues with how Sadaam's execution was played out.  Found it bullshit, in 2 ways--they tried to make it seem all "official" and state-run, when really in the end it was just pathetic and sad.  He either deserved to be hung by his balls or a true stately affair, not some jacked up shit in between.  Made the US look like major assholes, but then, we typically are.

McCain backpedalled because of the media furor, not public furor.  Pretty fucking sad.  And the media was just stirring shit--they love that kind of lail, after all.

Yes, but its better for him to lie and say we'll majickly escape as soon as he becomes Prezitator....

I hate to tell you this, but McCain didn't say we'd be fighting for 100 years, he was saying that, much like in Korea, et al, we might have to keep a military presence in Iraq.

What, you think if the Dems pull the troops out next year, they won't station some troops off the coast for the indefinite future?

Hey, I DON'T LIKE IT EITHER.  But there are much better ways to slam on McCain than to take him out of context and misrepresent his words.

Oh whatever, he should've known BETTER than to say Iraq and 100 years in the same fucking sentence.

And I'll slam motherfucking McCain anyway I please, kthxbyeeeeeee.  Fucker is on a sucker ticket.

Keeping a military presence in Iraq beyond that needed to safeguard American embassy personnel = keeping the fighting going for 100 years

If Barack Obama is elected, he will go back in time and stop the war before it began.

Nah, he'll wave the magic wand and bring our boys home and Iraq will be happy and there will be flowers and candy and sausages and CHANGE!

OR

We'll still be there come next election

OR

We'll pull out and more Hell will break loose

OR

McCain will win and almost exactly the same damn thing will happen.

It'll take roughly 3 years to properly organize a withdrawal.  At best, the first major wind down will take 18 months, according to my reading.

However, the sooner the policymakers realize little beats nationalistically grounded insurgencies (barring genocide) and get on with planning that instead of setting unreasonable goals and ludicrous targets for security, the better.
