Title: Yes, I am a hooker.
Post by: Cardinal Pizza Deliverance. on March 19, 2011, 04:06:44 AM
I crochet. And weave, spin, quilt, etc. Whatever catches my attention. And given that my Holy NameTM includes "Geyser" and "Rainbow", I figured this was appropriate to share. :P

Still needs a border but there you go. Rainbow yarn vomit all over the couch. :D

that's very nice.
have you considered leaving it without border? it looks good as is, imo...

I've considered it, yeah, but I'm worried the edges will snag and distort the squares if I don't. It will depend on how much heavy-duty use it will see, I think.

Thanks. :)

Also, a border, even just a couple rows of black, will be a good place to bury the ends where the squares are stitched together.  Looks great.  :)

thats pretty cool. a friend of mine tried to show me how to do that a couple times, the objective was to sell stupid looking hats to hipsters at the local art walk. unfortunately i lack patience. i think we just got really drunk instead.

Crochet is easier than getting drunk, I think. But I am a steadfast teetotaler. If it wasn't for all the sex, I'd be sXe. :P

are you going to make the border subtle? (like the few rows of black that was mentioned?)
also, my wife said it looks awesome, too, and wondered how many skeins of yarn it is...

I am considering doing another blanket of the same size in just black and brown stripes to give it a reverse side that doesn't blind the cats. And fixing the two layers together with a border through both at the same time. My thought was two rows of black single crochet, a row of brown half-double crochet, another row of black single and then a row of black picot. If any of that makes sense.

It has thirteen colors. I used one skein of the first eleven colors and then two of brown and two of black. So it's 17 skeins at this point. But the first eleven colors were left over from my last yarn binge. I was trying to use up my stacks of Red Heart.

Hah! See? That's at least three people who don't think I made this thing just to scare the neighbors and traumatize the cats. :P My boyfriend is having trouble with my color lust, poor man.

Someone on Ravelry pointed this place out: http://www.antiquepatternlibrary.org/

It's a collection of public domain patterns. Stuff is scanned so as not to be lost. Preserve heritage, yadda yadda.

This is CaronTM's idea of a fitting representation of Tuscon. All it needs is some leather trim and an embroidered scorpion motif.

Thanks. :) There are three color sequences, one per each round of the squares. The center rows are on the diagonal by color. The middle rows are straight across by color and the third rounds are alternately black or brown making a subtle checkerboard.

Do you mean that last pic?  I think that one is the best of the lot, really.  Blue, particularly dark blues which I see you've got going on in there, go really well with that and similar shades of yellow.

I'm making two afghans out of crochet blocks. Been working on them since January, one block a month, ish. Went outside a few minutes ago and baked my feet to get pictures of what I've got so far. The first two pictures are for the same blanket, it uses 12'' and 6'' squares. The last picture is of squares for a blanket that will just use 12'' blocks.

Do I want to start a new thread? Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

Made a blanket for the GF, got it done just in time for Christmas. She was tickled pink.

Here's a fairly decent picture of an individual (unblocked) motif:

And a fairly shitty picture of the whole blanket, draped over the cat tree of doom:

This thing is warm as hell, apparently. And it's damn plushy. Boucle and Caron acrylic crocheted together made a soft, somewhat springy fabric that makes you want to pet it. Who knew?

A fun side-effect of my crochet skills getting better and being dumb enough to make stuff for people for various occasions is that now people think I can turn out intricate items like highly detailed plushies in hours. These people think it is perfectly acceptable to find a pattern of something they think is cool and then ask me - or ask a friend I've made something for to ask me - to quote a price.

Completely ignoring the copywrite/rules-of-use for the pattern and/or bypassing the person who came up with the thing in the first place, who may be selling items or the pattern for profit.

WTF. I am not a one-person sweatshop for people to get cheap knock-off toys.

Hahaha seriously! Being generally crafty, I get that shit all the time. People want me to sew them custom Santa costumes and alter their clothes or make random crap for them for free. Or for "a couple of drinks", as if $12 even comes close to covering my time.

A good answer, BTW, is "Hmmm, that would take me at least a  couple of days to learn the pattern and make, so even if you only paid me minimum wage it would probably be cheaper to  buy the original".

They can't really argue with that without making it sound like they aren't even willing to pay you minimum wage for your time.

My reply was "You're a god damn moron." And then I laid the math out for the first fellow. Afterwords I proceeded to tell folks they were cordially invited to choke on a bag of dicks and there was a $20 dollar charge for asking me to make anything to do with fucking Pokemon.

ETA: In retrospect, your way might have been the right response. My knee-jerk anger at stupidity is a flaw. Sorta. Also the chip on my shoulder regarding being told I'm wasting my time if I'm not taking up hobbies specifically for making cash in the long run.

Why does everything have to be about how much money it can make you? Fucking hell.

I hate that, and I also hate people's completely uninformed opinions about how I could make more money.

Here is a thing about topics people know shit about: they always come up with some boneheadedly stupid suggestion and preface it with words like "I bet you would sell a lot of", "you should", and "can't you just..."

"I bet you would sell a lot of snowglobe earrings!"

"You should get a table at the street fair."

"Can't you just hire people to make your beads for you?"

And they always seem to think they have come up with something amazing and revolutionary, which clearly I have never thought of and certainly haven't thought through and rejected for reasons that are painfully obvious to anyone who actually knows what they're doing.

One of my favorite recurring ones is "You should teach". Another is "You should do trade shows". OH HOLY SHIT, I NEVER WOULD HAVE THOUGHT OF THAT, LET ALONE TRIED  IT YEARS AGO AND REJECTED IT FOR LOGISTICAL AND FINANCIAL REASONS.

Don't you know, Nigel? Trade shows are completely free and require no time investment whatsoever. You could go to a trade show in Boston and be home in time to make 800 beads before lunch. Clearly, you are just doin' it wrong.

That one is just bizarre, yeah. I mean... all I can relate it to is telling van Gogh that he should hire someone to paint for him.

Well, there's the art aspect (if I didn't make it, I can't really sell it as my own work), but even with simplest beads it makes zero economic sense; I would either have to pay someone an hourly wage and teach them how to make beads, or buy them by the piece from someone who already knows how, and there is no conceivable reason that anyone would sell me their work for half what they could sell it for themselves. And, even if I could find such people, at that point I'm not a beadmaker, I'm just a bead store.

And unless you sell enough beads that you can't actually produce them as fast as you sell them, you will simply hemorrhage money in you try to hire someone, right? PEOPLE ACTUALLY DID NOT REALIZE THIS?  :aaa:

Next time someone suggests something like that, I'm going to suggest that they hire someone to do their job so that they have more time to do other things. Because in an alternate universe, that makes COMPLETE SENSE.

Outsourcing *sage nod* even the Amish are doing it, with their quilts. I'm sure there's some starving kids in Guatemala who have access to all the equipment they'd need to make your beads in 1/3 the time for 1/10th the price. Then you could make BILLIONS.

Yes. Dude, we should just both be like "hey, email my rep" and then my friends can email you and your friends can email me, and we can both tell each other's friends and acquaintances that they are idiots.

We don't need to know what we 'should' be doing in our various crafts. No, no. We need an auto-reply e-mail that says "Thank you for your input, it provided a great chuckle. You are a fucking moron. Please accept our gift of rabid squirrels in  your pance."

In person encounters, well . . . that's why God invented squirt guns full of lemon juice.

On another note, I finished that second blanket. (And another baby blanket and a scarf, but the big blanket is the one that counts.)

Apparently there is another great divide in the universe of crafty needlework shit. Not only is it crochters vs knitters BUT  . . . . it's also acrylic vs wool (or anything else that is 'natural'). I saw a 'warning' posted on someone's project page about how acrylic baby blankets are evil and should not be used without supervision - no having an acrylic blanket with a baby at night, for instance.

Because if there's a fire, wool is flame retardant, but acrylic will burn and melt to the baby. Very inspiring, that. Especially when you , as a wool-user, go around posting on other people's project pages about the evils of acrylic. :P

Here's my latest baby blanket in 100% Acrylic. Because I don't like my friends, I hate their babies. :P

O.o That wasn't weird at all.
Sadly, even such blankets would make you want a baby if you're a woman and you're at least 24 years old :D
.....
SOON

I'm a thirty-year-old woman who *makes* the blankets and I don't want kids. Ever.

OMG, I love the internet!

All this time, what, almost two years? I have been assuming that you're significantly younger, male, and gay. And now that I think about it, I have no idea why. :lulz:

I've known that for a while and she still seems like a young gay man to me. Or a crazy old cat lady. Sometimes both at the same time. :lulz:

It's because I'm a pagan, isn't it? And my enjoyment of anal sex? And my short attention span . . .

If it makes you feel better, I used to tell people I was a gay tomcat trapped in a bi woman's body. Hilarity ensued, usually.

I love the shawls!
Title: Re: Yes, I am a hooker.
Post by: Cardinal Pizza Deliverance. on November 08, 2012, 11:41:38 PM
Thank you kindly, ma'am. Shawls are my favorite but I've been branching out into blankets to use up my acrylic, and hats so I have more on-the-go projects. I can knit or crochet anywhere and if I have something useful to do in my hands, I am less prone to accidentally answering strangers' questions honestly or getting thrown out of places or starting fights or just plain laughing in someone's face. I just keep my mouth shut and work on that hat, god damn it.

The two throw-blankets are sold, one for $100 and one for $200, so that was nice. More yarn money.
The hats were donated to charity.
The shawls were given away.

Ravelry.com is awesome. Patterns, details about almost every possible yarn, forums for questions and the like, and a place to put down what you want to work on, what tools you have, and what you want. Pretty helpful.

Youtube is also good, there are video tutorials for just about every stitch and pattern on there.

There are dozens of other sites, craftster, knitting.com, interweave, knitty.com, crochetme.com - but those are the two I actually have found to be the most helpful. :)

Cool! Nice even stitches. My first hat looked like it was pulled in pieces out of a dog's ass and then stapled together. She's picking things up rather handily. :) If she has questions or whatnot, I'm happy to help out.

She started with some magazine thing that does new shit every fortnight and you end up with a square, what are then all sewn or knitted together and it makes a blanket. Every new stich there's a couple of hours of swearing and "I can't get my head round this"-ing and then she susses it out. I dig it - all the beanies I can eat.

I will sell my right nut on ebay for one of these. Question: How soon will P3nTGF learn how to do this or how much would you charge for an custom. I need, not "want" but motherfucken NEED this, on my head, stat!

It looks complicated but it's really simple, just a basic crochet ear-flap beanie with crocheted bits sewn on. The body looks like like rounds of single crochet (double crochet for you across-the-pond people). As soon as she learns to join new colors to her work and such, which is also super simple, it will be nuthin'. She should be able to do it really easily, especially if you buy her the pattern and the yarn. :D And then some extra yarn for stuff she wants to make. :D That would be way cheaper than me doing it.

as another noob to this whole crochet business I will have to point out that americans use different terms for the stitches. What I call a double treble Curiosity/CPD would call a treble, so any patterns would have to be adapted.

I am on cowl no 4 for the xmas gifties at the moment, using a lovely super chunky soft varigated yarn to make them which is hella fast growing. I can't follow patterns yet but I can make granny squares  and make up my own pattern for a short scarf.

Most of the bits are american from what I've seen, so until I can follow a British pattern comfortably I'm leaving the US sites alone.

I'm going to be edging the cowl/scarf doodads with recycled sari silk, some will be button up, some just slide over the heid.. I've varied the stitch pattern of the rows in the last one I started today, dong (UK) double-trebles in 2 rows and trebles in 2 rows.

Your cowl/scarves sound really nice. I love the colors in sari silk.

You might like Lucy of Attic 24's blog. Her terms are all UK and she has great picture tutorials. http://attic24.typepad.com/ (http://attic24.typepad.com/) I read her blog for the colors, not quite sari silk saturated but it reminded me of her.

I have decided what to mek a Payne for Xmas gifties.

crochet scarf, in the Fibonacci sequence, as a mobius strip. I've got some yarn for a scarf for him, and I'll post pics when I'm done. I've got some gorgeous aran tweed (which was not cheap) pure wool yarn. (I'm using a 5mm hook)

It's going to be pretty awesome looking.

I have chosen 2 colours from this range, http://www.celticove.com/acatalog/Tweed-Aran.html although I'm not telling what they are, as it's supposed to be a surprise. Luckily i also have another scarf on the go for our friend Jerry, an American self-exile in Edinburgh (OMG OMG OMG alpaca blend yarn is fucking DECADENT AS FUCK! sooo soft and kind of springy. I want £100 so I can make a blanket or throw or something from a similar blend.) so I can switch between projects for when Payne is home, and when Payne is not.

Alas current blanket project is 25% or so done, but festive seasons have put the fucker on hold. I was kind of summer weight anyway, so hey ho.

I'm working on a set of dishcloths for my roommate, who likes those sorts of things. I picked three patterns, without reading them, that I thought looked really different and offered up different textures. Turns out they all use the same two stitches - single crochet and double crochet - the only change is which hole you're putting the stitches in.

As opposed to how you kill them now, by bludgeoning them with your kayak?

Finished another hat. This is also rather bullet proof. But hey, it has a pom-pom on top. And it's an ear-flap hat, although you probably can't tell.

Made this for BF. Turns out he bought a blue cookie monster ear-flap hat a few days ago. So this is sort of superfluous. Gotta find someone else to give it to. Huzzah.

Gave it to him for his birthday. He didn't really like it, but won't let me give it to someone who will and get him something he'll like. Whatever.

Latest blanket. More of a lapghan and/or baby-blanket sized. Due to difficulties, Imma try to sell it for $75-ish. I took these pictures with my iPod Touch but I don't have steady hands so deal until I can take better ones.

There's a chick at work who keeps telling me her baby needs a blanket. She doesn't ask, she tells me. And then she demands to know what I'm going to do about it. We'll see if she'll buy this one and shut the fuck up. Since she's not getting one for free. :P

Also - the blanket is a perfect square, don't let the pictures full you. I just threw it down and didn't bother pulling it straight because Ma'at was 'helping'. I only had a few seconds to get pictures before she rolled herself up in it like a kitty-burrito.

yarn is pretties, but with the bright variegation I cannot see stitches.

THIS YARN IS 40% off! I NEED SOMEONE TO TALK ME OUT OF IT

Yeah, I kept the stitches simple because of the variegation. Just variations of traditional granny squares. Mostly clusters of three double crochet.

I love the Noro yarns but they can be a little bearish to work with. Don't have much experience with the Araucania yarns. Oh wait, talk you out of it. Um.

*cough cough* Both these yarns are abysmal. Don't get them.

I've stopped looking at yarn for awhile. Except for Wollmeise, Wolle's Yarn, and The Loopy Ewe. Wollmeise is in Germany. It almost compels me to get a passport and head that way just so I can see it in person. But I'm too broke right now and . . . priorities, responsibility, and six totes of yarn in my closet say no!

My yarn SCIENCE project blanket is coming along nicely. it's now at lap blanket width and I've still got about 400g of aran weight to go. I am getting bored of the basic granny square stitch pattern and am considering making a really thick border and playing with some new stitch patterns.

I always intend to make a really large granny blanket again. And then about nine rows in I get bored so I switch it up. And then nine rows later I'm bored again so I change it to something else. And so on. I say do the border thing. :D

:) Some granny stripe might work in strips for a bit. I'm considering that to make the shape more elongated before a border.  like, 5 at the top and bottom and 3 at the sides...

I have started a crib blanket for my sister's best friend.

its 60"x45" , and I've been working in different-height stitch rows along the 60" for horizontal stripey goodness. It's going to be AWESOME and I am maybe going to crochet an owl to sew on, for the gender neutral (don't know about babby's downstairs mixup yet) cute animal. Was considering ripple, but ripples are as of yet beyond me.

stone-brown and cream varigated, cream, a aquamarine blue, sage green, that sort of brazillian amethyst kind of shade of purple and some red, for the modern, funky Welsh baby.

stripe pattern is all pretties, and the different stitch heights are giving it a nice sort of ribbed undulation in the fabric as the rows build up.  I am NOT ALLOWED to crochet ANYTHINGS but crib blanket until crib blanket

Still plugging away on my lace. Stopped to make five granny square blocks for a group project going to a friend having a shit life right now.

How far did you get on the crib blanket before you got distracted, Pixie? Baby blankets are my kryptonite. As soon as I start one, I want to set it or myself on fire. So I start something else and forget about it until the baby it was meant for is due or crowning. Then I start working like a mad bastard on it.

Yeah, that's our single crochet. I insert my hook, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through one loop, yarn over and pull through two loops. Always done my single crochet that way.

Hey hookers,

Leisure Arts is having a 35% site-wide sale on pattern books for crochet, knit, quilting, etc. This includes their eBooks. Of which I just scored a few. >.> There's also a warehouse clearing sale for the dead-tree versions. Which are priced ridiculous things like $.95 and so on. Just an FYI.

So apparently all the sweaters Mr. Rogers wore on his show were hand-knit by his mother. Which explains the elaborate scene changing in to one every day episode. Gotta take care of those things. Someone made a sweater for his statue in PA.

QuoteThe Crochet Coral Reef (CCR) is a project by the Institute For Figuring, a non-profit Los-Angeles based organization that pioneers creative new methods for engaging the public about scientific and environmental issues by putting people and communities at the core.

The CCR is a project that resides at the intersection of mathematics, marine biology, handicraft and community art practice, and also responds to the environmental crisis of global warming and the escalating problem of oceanic plastic trash. It has been exhibited in art and science museums worldwide, including the Andy Warhol Museum (Pittsburgh), The Hayward (London), the Science Gallery (Dublin), and the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History (Washington D.C.) I am strictly FOR this assbaggery.

Mr Rogers was arguably the most moral and good American in our entire history, even if he didn't have as visible an impact as other people did.  Anytime people do something neat in his memory, I feel better about people for a while.

He didn't preach.  You just didn't ever want to let him down.

Could you imagine, even for one horrifying second, what it would feel like to have Fred Rogers look at you with disappointment on his face?

Makes me want to curl into a fetal position just thinking about it.

Instead of talking much. An online friend has a sick two-year-old. Like way sick. Like I stopped listening at 'lung tissue necrosis' and started doing this. Luckily my hands don't require a brain to yarn. A bunch of online friends are putting together some blankets for the kid, and her sister. So I've been yarning. Because what else can you do?

Yeah, things are looking a little better, though. I had the thought that crochet is sort of like prayer. It doesn't do jack shit but when there's nothing else to do, you have to do SOMETHING.

Anyway, the squares are pretty kick-ass and I've got a few new tricks in my skill bag so that's something. I have two more 30 gallon totes of Red Heart Super Saver to go through.  :lulz:

Be prepared, PD. Eventually I will follow my larval bretheren and cocoon myself. Who knows what I will become when I emerge. A cashmere butterfly with laserbeam antennae? A qiviut moth that shoots poison darts from a weaponized proboscis? Only time will tell.

Can't find/didn't look too hard my other crochet thread so I'm updating this one with some shit. Sue me.

First, what's cool.

Awesome shit, there, I think. Gives me plans for my evil lair once I get the moat finished.

That website has some other stuff that's pretty awesome-sauce, too. Including Olek's latest wacky trick. I like it, I love it, I want some more of it.

Second, what's SO NOT COOL OMFG.
