With all the stalking that many of our members, including myself, seem to be on the receiving end of much of the time, it seems unnecessary and perhaps unwise to allow users who are not logged in to view people's profiles and search their post history. Few forums I am aware of have that feature turned on, for reasons that seem obvious; why would a non-member want to look at members' profiles and post history?
What do you say?
My position on this is that they shouldn't be able to do so. I have debated it with some of the other admins.
I'm not at all comfortable with the fact that unregistered users can riffle through my post history.
Just sayin'.
Agreed.
Lock that shit down.
Logical, particularly given the stalker crap going on.
seconded, thirded and fourthed.
I understand why people want this, but realistically, it does almost nothing to raise the opportunity costs of datamining someone.
It's not going to make your information more secure, and apparently it's going to give a whole bunch of you the illusion of security, which IMO is more dangerous than the current system.
I'll vote for it to be turned off if you want. It doesn't worry me to do so, because it wont make much of a difference.

It lets you conveniently page through someone's posts, etc, rather than googling a known item.

They can do that without going to your page or clicking that link. They can only access material you have made public.
Set Google (or another major search engine) to search a specific site, select a username and you get much the same thing.
I know, I've done it before. It's no great obstacle.
Heres a funny thing I just found out, It's also an unrestricted feature not linked with having an account. Meaning that even if you make profiles private the feature and information is still available for guests
Now I am happy to turn it off, as I hate you and I love turning off search features, but it turns it off for all users not just guests.

You know that. I know that. But the kinds of brain-damaged morons who tend to go to people's profiles and hit "view all posts by this user" in the hopes of finding something to threaten to sue Faust about, by and large, for some reason, do not seem to know that. Plus, it's possible to circumvent that just by changing our usernames, which happens often enough.
But, hell, if it suits some portion of y'alls egos to not turn of profile viewing for unregistered users, go for it, it's not going to change anything for me except not letting my kids register here.
What does ego have to do with any of this?
Sorry, I'm not in the mood to answer lazy ad hominem arguments.

Gotta be honest, dude. Your other posts ITT come off as condescending. Regardless of how you meant them.
In terms of the argument here, I have little opinion on the matter. However, I think Nigel's points here seem to be reasonable enough. On the other hand, if the only solution is to make the profiles completely private, I'm not sure if that's good enough. However, I would not object if that was the case.
Oh I'm sorry, I didn't realize my tone invalidated the actual points I raised in my post.
And for the record, this is me being condescending now.

I didn't say your points were invalid, jackass. I just said that I can fully see why Nigel would say it was about ego. I thought it was clear from the "Regardless of how you meant it." that I was giving you the benefit of the doubt. But, I guess not.

Or you were being just another passive-aggressive coward, hedging your bets and trying to have it both ways.
And purposeful omission is invalidation by implication, idiot. Don't treat me like someone who just stepped off the boat.
Nigel at least has an argument, even if it comes down to the laughable assertion that people datamining for information will never figure out how to use Google. Or that name changing, which won't affect cached records or quoted posts, will somehow protect people.
She's wrong. But at least there was an argument tacked on before the pointless ad hominem attack. You don't even have that.
Um, guys? There's no need to go bouncing off the walls, here.
We have a bit of a problem with stalkers now and again. We won't solve it by cutting each others' throats.
Well then maybe people should back off and stop attacking me for no damn reason then.
This isn't cutting throats. This is me being attacked and legitimately defending myself.

No this is you overreacting to perceived slights for no damn reason.
I said Nigel's point made sense, but that with Faust's information, I have no real opinion on the matter. Sorry for summarizing my thought process in light of the most recent information. Allow me to correct that.
Personally, I'd rather it remained turned on, because 1) I agree with Cain's points and 2) Faust's revelation makes me think that it's not worth the trouble. HOWEVER. Nigel's point, that stalkers are a problem, is a legitimate concern. While the suggested solution is not really a solution, it seems to me that it is something that we should honestly work towards some form of security in this regard.

Actually it's worse then that: changing your name changes it for ALL posts previously made which google updates about two to three days after the fact for all those previous records, it would work if you are changing your name all the time and no one could figure out who you were, but someone serious about tracking you will just take down the user profile ID.
Being the pessimistic cynic I am when it comes to the internet, my guess is that the only true way to protect your information from stalkers on the internet is to not post it on the internet.

Not trying to be difficult, but the reality is, if someone REALLY wants to find stuff, and has even a reasonable amount of internet skills, they will find it. I could care less about what switches get turned on or off here, but if the goal is to keep a committed stalker (read: completely obsessive) at bay, it's not going to stop them.
All they have to do is make an account and lurk, or not act as an obvious jackass.
It's why I am VERY protective of information. There's a reason only two people on this site know my real name, it's why I don't post pics anymore, it's why I've not posted info about my education.

No, you weren't trying to be difficult. You were trying to be smug. My father got hassled, I'm obviously pissed about it and
the PI they got to actually send the letter didn't come out of any threads. So the OBVIOUS fucking thing to do is lecture at me like I'm a Goddamn idiot who left his FATHER'S street address on a thread.
Again, fuck off. Find someone else to whom you can condescend. Assmonkey.
Interestingly enough, the only people who had enough information to get my address and get it wrong are people who were on the original fucked up letters mailing list.
...are you saying that someone from that list gave out PI to a Uncle BadTouch cohort?

I'm saying it's a possibility. Some people on that list no longer think of me as a friend, after all, and a couple of them have expressed their need to teach me a thing or two.
Maybe it's because I'm in a regulatory position, but that kind of stuff is really vile... if that's what happened, of course.
So, in other words, this has nothing at all to do with whether or not profiles are publicly viewable?
Don't get me wrong, I'm sympathetic to what happened to your dad. That shit is fucked up and if it had happened to me I wouldn't be acting nearly as reasonably as you are. But speaking from a strictly administrative standpoint it doesn't seem like your troubles are in any way related to whether or not guests can view profiles.

I have no idea. The address used on the original mailing list would have led where the letter arrived, and a google of my full name would have done the same thing, because my father and I share a name, though not in the same order. If you recall, I stayed with him for a while when my kids first moved out here with me. That was when the first mailing list went out.
And it was a BIG list, if you recall. Well over a hundred names, and at least 5 of those people have since joined My People, and have expended a great deal of effort in the past with the intent of making my life difficult. 3 of those people were not on the second list, which used my current address.
On the other hand, I haven't been particularly careful with my last name, and a google of that would lead to my father's doorstep, as I have an unpublished number.
If they got it from the white pages and not the mailing list, wouldn't it show a different first name?

That's pretty much the case (it seems), though that MIGHT be where they got my last name. It's not outside of the realm of possibility, but is looking less and less likely.
Still, the idea of one of these creeps paging through my posts puts my hackles up.
But, in the final analysis, I'm not gonna push the issue anymore. Life's too short.
Sorry for the hassle.
Nah, no worries man. It's better to have discussed the issue and gotten everyone's feedback on it. And now it's on the radar so that if it does become a more pressing issue I won't feel like I have to have this conversation again before acting.

If there's a way to make it so individual users have the option of making their profiles non-viewable I'm totally fine with that (even though, as already stated, it will do fuck-all for anyone's security) but I'm not turning it off for everyone for what amounts to no real reason at all. Some of us may be fine with our post being searchable, or even prefer it.
You didn't jump down his throat. Especially given the bolded.
Possibly because I managed to explain my position clearly without condescending to anyone, appealing to authority, or just generally coming off as an obnoxious twerp.

HEY...
Fuck off.
The fewer crumbs we leave the less likely someone we don't want finding us, will find us.
Lest anyone start feeling bad for RWHN.
Well apparently everyone is peachy keen with both you and ECH declaring that posting PI is A-OK. I just hope none of them ever end up on your badside.
You guys are quite the pair.

Kind of hard to stop something that's pathological.

You must be so proud, you are such a "big man"!
There are a lot of things I don't like, but somehow I manage to not become a total prick. I would never post even a person's first name here, and I know a few of them including people I really don't like, without their say so. It's just common decency.
But that isn't something you possess is it DOUR?

He's not a total prick by his standards, which are the only standards that matter because we don't know any better. We're just the misinformed public.
I would love to know what qualifies as "total prick" for purposes of this discussion.

And I'd like to say that I would very much like to thank the hordes of PDers who spoke up at that time.
Because it warms my heart that our outrage here isn't highly selective.
