Title: Mom Calls 911 Over Son's Non-Stop Gaming
Post by: Dalek on December 22, 2009, 09:09:36 PM
QuoteA stressed-out Boston mother recently decided that the best way to handle her young son's non-stop videogaming was to call 911 on him.

When Angela Mejia woke up at 2:30 in the morning last Saturday and realized her 14-year-old son was playing videogames in his bedroom despite being told to go to sleep, she marched into his room and unplugged his console. Then, as the inevitable argument ensued, she took matters to the next level: She called 911.

"I have support from my church, but I'm alone," she told the Boston Herald. "I want to help my son, but I can't find a way."

He had apparently been playing Grand Theft Auto, an "exceedingly violent" game that Mejia said she strongly disapproved of. "I would never buy that kind of video. No way," she said. "I called [the police] because if you don't respect your mother, what are you going to do in your life?"

Police responded to the scene and were apparently able to talk her son into turning off his PlayStation and going to sleep". "They were just like, 'Chill out. Go to bed'," the boy said.

"Clearly, it's a very, very rare situation for someone to call the cops," said Grand Theft Childhood author Lawrence Kutner. "That she went to the extreme of calling the police tells me more about her level of frustration than anything else."

Cops get this every once in a while--calls that come in to make them settle disputes, etc.  I think it's a waste of time and pathetic, but in a way good PR time for them to help facilitate calm rather than escalate bullshit like tasering kids.

in all reality i would just take the system away, and play in front of him.

It is so simple.

You walk in, take the controllers and out them in your purse and take them with you everywhere you go.

The game sits there as a reminder of the penalty for not doing what your mother says.

I think this points to an overabundance of the "This hurts me more than it hurts you" school of parenting. That sort of mentality, I mean, unwillingness to provide discipline where needed out of some sort of second circuit weakness.

It points to weakass parents not being able to pull a cord out of the socket because they are AFRAID of their own KIDS.

And kids are like any other predato--I mean being--they smell your fear and react accordingly.  Fucking pull the plug, folks.  They won't die.  You won't die.  They'll be pissed, and loud.  You shoulda nipped that shit in the bud when they were 2 instead of letting them piss and poo their pants and then cleaning it up for them.

Sorry.  My idiot ranting button goes off over shit like this.

now THAT'S good parenting.
a role model to us all I'm sure.

i mean how can it be that you can't control your 14 year old son?
what my mum did with me during that phase: told me to keep it quiet and then i could game as much as i wanted. eventually the sleep deprivation made me stop.

I never understood why the root of the problem seems to be avoided in alot of cases. Just a quick fix, and all is well .. until 10 minutes later.

Why does he have a video game system in his room? If she would never buy him that game why does he have it? WHY...

You know what, never mind.

Instead of going on a rant, I'm going to post a picture of a retarded tiger:

My guess?  Because the kid asked for money, and she gave it to him.

The only reason I got to have a video game system in my room as a kid is because I always was good at putting it down, and if I was ever at an inconvenient moment I would, politely, ask if I could get to a save point before shutting it off because I didn't wanna lose my data. Of course that wasn't until I was slightly older, 13-14 I think. And instead of sheltering me from blood and gore until adulthood when I was interested in stuff with violence in it they just sat me down and explained that it was fake and for entertainment and to not try any of the shit in there for real. Fuck, I think one of the funniest things I've seen to date is one of my parents playing Turok and emptying a clip into a dead raptor after they had the gall to sneak up on him.  :lulz:

I played/watched whatever I felt like with no restrictions whatsoever. Late night graphic violence and nudity when I could get it since I was about, oh, 7?

No one explained shit to me.

LOOK AT HOW WELL ADJUSTED I AM!

In all honesty I wish someone had told me to turn that shit off and go to bed/go outside.

I had access to computers and video games since I was 3 and multiple video game systems in my room since I was about 12, but I also listened to my parents because I knew better. If my kid ever defied me like that he'd be nostrils-deep in shit. He'd be lucky to get more entertainment than a text-book if he ever fucked up like that. So far my boy is pretty well-behaved/well-adjusted though, I'm either lucky or doing something right.

I didn't have a gaming system in my room until University.

For real.  We only had one TV in the house, which was of course downstairs (meaning I needed permission to hook up my games console with it, or for everyone else to be out of the house), and even when I got my first desktop, my room was so small it needed to go in the kitchen.

I hated kids with TVs in their room, mainly because I lived in a semi-detatched house, and our neighbours used TV as control for their ADHD child, which, because of thin walls, could keep me up until 3am.  Not cool, when I had exams on.

I used to be huge on video games, had several systems in my room and a computer too.  Spoiled me rotten.  Now that I'm all of 23 years old, I'd rather have an expensive bed and a robotic toilet than any game system.

I had a gamecube hooked up to a tv in my room through high school. I wasn't very good at getting off for dinner and bed and things, and while my parents threatened, they never did anything to stop me.  :|

I let my kid have a couple days where he plays video games for reasonable period of time and couple days off.

I think it's helping to teach moderation.  Growing up, I used to play video games until i was just sick of it and could probably have used a bit more of a balanced schedule.

I ordered a Wii for my birthday.  We just got the Sports game that came with it and the Wii Play game, and one other.  At first, my daughter wanted to play it every night after dinner.  And she still likes to play it occasionally, but whatever amount of obsession she had when it arrived quickly dissipated.  And also, now she has a drum set.   :D
