Yesss! Are there more? I remember we already agreed a few years ago that that last one is indeed the BEST JOKE EVER.

Okay, so this man walks into a dentist's office and says, "I think I'm a moth."
The dentist replies "You shouldn't be here. You should be seeing a psychiatrist..."
The guys replies, "STOP OPPRESSING ME!!! YOU ARE BEING RACIST AGAINST MY KIND!! YOU ARE BEING OFFENSIVE AND UNETHICAL!!!"

:rimshot:

(for those that did not know it already, it actually ends like this:
The guys replies, "I am already seeing a psychiatrist."
The dentist says, "Well then what are you doing here?"
And the guy says, "Your light was on.")

here is some delightfully long rant about "could care less" :

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=854042

Um

I have barely started reading the comment  you linked to, and already I notice that the author is apparently unaware that "blackbird" is one word or that "board" in "room and board" still refers to food. That is why by definition a "boarding house" serves meals.

:lulz: I just remembered again why I often do these things wrong on purpose (though usually not in English, those mistakes are genuine), so much that there's a few Dutch partial phrases were at some point my default option would be the wrong one, I tried to go back, but I only got so far as now both options sound perfectly fine to me. Which is amazing to me, because I usually get language right because certain things "sound" or "feel" right intuitively, instead of applying rules.

Cool! Please to link when you have a simple demo going! :)

I bet they could be cured, with helminth therapy.

Well, except for the helminthkin. It might only reinforce their ideas.

I am now coining the phrase "recreational drug enforcement".

Err
http://yro.slashdot.org/story/13/08/11/1244209/after-lavabit-shut-down-dotcoms-mega-promises-secure-mail?sdsrc=rel

QuoteLavabit may no longer be an option, but recent events have driven interest in email and other ways to communicate without exposing quite so much, quite so fast, to organizations like the NSA (and DEA, and other agencies). Kim Dotcom as usual enjoys filling the spotlight, when it comes to shuttling bits around in ways that don't please the U.S. government, and Dotcom's privacy-oriented Mega has disclosed plans to serve as an email provider with an emphasis on encryption. ZDNet features an interview with Mega's CEO Vikram Kumar about the complications of keeping email relatively secure; it's not so much the encryption itself, as keeping bits encrypted while still providing the kind of features that users have come to expect from modern webmail providers like Gmail:
"'The biggest tech hurdle is providing email functionality that people expect, such as searching emails, that are trivial to provide if emails are stored in plain text (or available in plain text) on the server side,' Kumar said. 'If all the server can see is encrypted text, as is the case with true end-to-end encryption, then all the functionality has to be built client side. [That's] not quite impossible but very, very hard. That's why even Silent Circle didn't go there.'"

Are people really going to trust Mega enough to use their secure private email service? I fucking doubt it. In fact, I'd guess them making something like this would be the little justification the need to go after all of them hard due to piracy concerns. With the fallout from the inital Mega debacle still ongoing and plenty of data destroyed/lost/in government hands/limbo I'd avoid this like the fucking plague.

From what I've heard, Mega is really trying to get things right, from a security perspective. Their algorithms are open source and they invite security testers to find holes in it.

I haven't read much about this project recently though, and personally I'd hold off using it for a while until at least a couple of bugs are found and squashed.

Ever tried putting an alogorithm in prison?

Well, actually ... :) they use the "chroot jail", and various forms of sandboxing.

That most probably won't hold a Strong AI, though, as Eliezer Yudkowsky demonstrated in several roleplaying experiments.

Cool, I'm currently trying to learn about music theory myself. After having finally figured out where the distinction between black and white keys on a piano comes from[0], I am a bit more comfortable with this. I still prefer integer notation because it makes mathematical sense, which so far offers me more advantages than whatever convoluted reasons I've come across for making "staff notation" work the way it does.

For instance you can't play that six note whole tone scale you describe on a piano without half of the keys being black--okay the colour doesn't matter, but the fact that they're positioned differently "above/between" the white notes despite all having the same frequency pitch relationship is kinda stupid.

BTW you might enjoy checking out the Raven Spiral Guide, which is a relatively low-key (haha) practical introduction to music theory (without staff notation!). He mentions the whole tone scale on page 14 (though he calls it a 7-note scale because he includes the C'). Apparently it is used in the intro of Kraftwerk's song Spacelab, because of its "floaty" sci-fi qualities.

Incidentally the guy that wrote the Raven Spiral Guide appears to be a Discordian: he used Discordian dates for the versioning in previous versions, and the subtitle of the latest one I just linked is obviously a reference to the similar subtitle on the cover of the PD.

  • it's the Circle of Fifths, and the fact that when they made up this stuff over the centuries they hadn't yet figured out that elegant structures are preferable to a theory shaped like an ingrown toenail

Salvador Dali, everybody.

Heh, I was going to say, that sounds a lot like Dali.

Not an image, but on the subject of Dali, I recently found this YouTube clip of Salvador Dali appearing as a mystery guest on a 1950's gameshow called "What's My Line?" (9m21s). I thought it was pretty cool. After watching it, be sure to read the top comment as well, it made me LOL.

Even more off-topic to PICS, but it's a really cool song and it's got a nice vocal sample by Dali in the intro: Younger Brother - All I Want.

Dimo are these going to be in the BIP2013 or something?

They are now  :lulz:

But no, intended purpose of topic (this) was for the  :? and the  :lulz:, possibly the  :argh!:

These things, they are urgent, no?

very urgent. although I still don't see what was the problem. I trust it was urgent though.

and good thing I didn't actually didn't actually get into what is wrong with them.

Quote from: Triple Zero on August 14, 2013, 01:46:12 AMI made those charts at the CT meetup a few years back, for reasons I only partially remember.
We needed to calculate how much everyone was going to pitch in for the rental, which was mildly complicated by the fact that people who slept on the floor would pay less than people who actually got a bed.

As it turns out, I am EXTREMELY good at fucking up algebra problems.

Right! Is this a sort of accurate timeline?

1. need to calculate how to split rental + etc.

2. cainad smells an algebra problem, pounces.

3. he gets it wrong.

4. tripzip decides to one-up cainad and writes code to generate a whole table of incorrect numbers.

5. he gets it wrong.

6. tripzip fixes code and generates new table of incorrect numbers.

7. suddenly, time passes.

8. dimo finds himself in a state of urgency, posts this thread.

I bet he'll manage to get just a few crucial ones right, just because :lulz:

I made those charts at the CT meetup a few years back, for reasons I only partially remember.

Dimo are these going to be in the BIP2013 or something? (and does that mean you need a non-photo avatar? I still have Suu's cartoon avatar of me lying around, though just BW not the coloured version) (I also still have those of squiddy, ech, eve, rwhn, lmno, dcup, payne, ratatosk, suu, richter, fred, cram and cain, in case you or anyone needs them)

But how would I know your assessment would be?

That's why I made a computer do it, I studied computer science for years to make them give wrong results, that I never got my Masters degree proves I know to to get this shit wrong!
