Dunno about security but fuck me did I just serve 6 months in what felt like a - how not to infrastructure - case study. The guys who bought us out are running a f'kin foxpro admin system that looks like an out of date warehousing/logistics solution, poorly modded for RIM functionality.

Okay so it's archaic and clunky as fuck but so are a lot of things in this field. Budget aint what it used to be and it can be hard to convince the board that we need something new when what we already have is doing the job, right?

Okay, fair enough but which fucking idiot thought it would be a good idea to serve it over MS RDP in some kind of twisted homage to the 90's thin client craze? So now these guys are wondering why there's smoke pissing out the back of their server every time they turn it on an five hundred users ask for sessions.

I'm guessing the same idiot decided it was a good idea to stick the database on the same box, cos fuck if I haven't got anything better to do than wait one minute and thirty seconds for a hundred-odd work orders to appear on my screen.

The icing on the cake was when tech support sent out an email about a planned server reboot TEN FUCKING MINUTES before they took it down! Surprise surprise, rebooting didn't fix their 90,000% load issue but it did stop us servicing any orders for the best part of twelve hours.

Bear in mind this company is the success story, their acquisition strategy is one per month and they're trying to increase this to two. Fuckers are so backlogged it took three months for them to even email me about data transfer. I can't complain, just picked up half a years salary for an hour and a half's work.

And they still managed to arsehole the transfer. Kinda guessed they would when, two days before I pulled the plug on my side, I was getting emails asking what all my fields did.

Security? At a guess there is none. AD group policy certainly wasn't the slightest bit concerned when our AV cover ended. The application they're using is essentially visual foxpro query builder, with a logo in the corner. That's right, end fucking users are writing SQL. Can't imagine anything going wrong there. Lets hope they've locked down Drop statements. I didn't have the heart to check.

I'm faced with a dichotomy. I gotta create. Like in an ideal world, every waking moment would be art. But it's not an ideal world. It's a fucking clusterfuck of a place, filled with deranged apes who demand I pay them for food and shelter. So I gotta devote a whole bunch of time and energy to collecting these tiny pieces of imaginary paper (yeah, they ran out of trees so we're using pretend paper now)

So I go from every waking hour creating art, to whenever I can find a spare minute, after collecting enough imaginary paper that I don't starve to death. Unless I can kill two birds with one stone and create art in exchange for imaginary paper. So my creations are dictated to me by fussy monkeys.

From society's point of view it's a useful shorthand. The group is probably strong enough to lose a bad apple or two whereas any attempt to give the benefit of the doubt carries a risk of the fucker doing the same thing again. Looking at it strictly pragmatically, why bother trying?

The question then becomes - what is considered too far gone? Thus we've become accustomed to find certain crimes particularly abhorrent and unforgivable. It varies from society to society but there are common themes. Painting these criminals as monsters is an easy way to avoid any moral backlash or cold feet about how they're dealt with.

To be honest I don't have a problem with this. Just because I can empathise with the set of events that led an innocent child to grow up into a demented fiend from the pits of hell doesn't mean I want the bastard living next door to me. Sure, there may be a way to  get through to them and rehabilitate but how many tax dollars do I have to stick in the pot to find out? What's the risk to me and my family? Maybe there's more important things to spend my money on than lost causes with a proven track record for mischief.

Oh i know were youre coming from, safety and not wasting resources on irredeemable criminal shitbags... i could even add that those that are in deathrow or for life imprisonment are in this stupid humanitarian limbo that is unfair for them and for society at large... theyve been marked as unfit to come back to society, so the supposed "rehabilitation" that is the purpose of prisons does not apply to them... so theyre just left to rot encaged despite never ever reintegrating to society while wasting truckloads of money on the facilities and systems to keep them there... i mean, speak of the industro-judicial complex and setting people as an example or w.e.

So like, in terms of criminals that get viewed as monsters and get thrown in the pokey or get the death sentence, fine, the mentality is reasonable and pragmatic... but the problems begin when other groups that arent irredeemable criminals are catalogued as monsters... illegal immigrants, the political opposition, you name it... then rather than a "defense mechanism" it becomes an "attack mechanism" so to speak, it becomes not about protecting ourselves but about demonizing the opposition so we dont feel guilty or have second doubts while curb-stomping them.

It's all in the nuance. Also I'm kinda on the fence a bit. A little devil's advocate to see if anyone has a better idea. It's a strong argument I've heard many a time and, with the extreme cases, the left don't seem to have anything to counter it with.
