Title: The Unlimited Atlantic Hurricane Season Fread
Post by: Suu on August 23, 2011, 02:23:49 AM
There is something spinning in the Atlantic.

Her name is Irene.

I fucking DARE YOU.

Looks like she's projected to ground in the Carolinas, unless something drastic shifts.

It's called the Gulf Stream. I wouldn't call it a Carolinacane until it's parallel with the Bahamas. If the water off of Bermuda is warm enough to spawn 1 flaggers, it can sustain a good sized storm right up Narragansett Bay.

BRING IT, GODDAMNIT.

I'm so glad I went grocery shopping!

However, I don't plan on sticking around this apartment for very long if it sticks with being a direct hit. Tropical storm force winds can still take a patched roof off, and the last direct hit we had, Hanna, made the Monastery sway violently, again, just as a 1-flagger. So I'll talk to Herbert about coming to get my computer out of here, because I can't afford to lose it. My fabric will get tarped up before I evac.

This obviously means it's time to evacuate to lower-ground for the usual hurricane shenanigans. Janelle the Canuckistani has NEVER SEEN A STORM. So, even if it's the usual fly by, I'm taking her to Pt. Judith to watch it roll in on Sunday, and hopefully we can catch the hurricane barrier close too.

Outer Banks are now officially under a watch. They are starting to move the track. Forecast model is following Gloria 1985.

(http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/storm_graphics/AT09/refresh/AL0911W_NL+gif/092237W_NL_sm.gif) 3 day cone.

(http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/storm_graphics/AT09/refresh/AL0911W5_NL+gif/092237W5_NL_sm.gif) 5 day cone.

She's slowing down, too. Which, btw, is not always a good thing.

It's just gonna be a little wind and rain by the time it gets up here. And there's a pretty good chance it'll be most of the way out to Nova Scotia by then anyway.

DO never take your tropical storm information from NOAA if you want to know what's actually going on. The NHC is basically one big bag of ignorant dogshit.

Also, does this thread mean that I'll never again have to wade through a half-page of weather-related threads in apple talk?

I clearly remember, when I was much smaller than I am now, the NHC being in cahoots with supermarkets to print "hurricane tracking charts" on all paper bags so you can track the hurricane after you go blow assloads of money on overpriced batteries and rotate out your canned goods.

I'm not saying it was a conspiracy or anything.

I trust NOAA/NHC more than the fucking Weather Channel any day. No matter how much I want to have Jim Cantore's stormchasing babehs.

Forecasting tracks is inexact, and until they come up with a better method, the one we got is what we got. Yeah, it scares the shit out of people, but better to be crazy prepared than OMGWTFHURRICANE.

True that. Weather Channel has slightly more weather than the History Channel has history. But not by much. Sensationalist bullshit. At least with NOAA maps I can check the variables and make my own forecast.

Okay, we're under a watch now. NYC is under a warning. If this thing is packing the surge the NHC/TWC/everyone is saying, guys, Providence is fucked. That barrier cannot withstand a 40ft surge bottlenecked up the Bay.

I'm not expecting total devastation, but it's time to batten down. Extracting valuables today and making evac arrangements.

Irene is carrying a lot of water. I don't see why they're evacuating the entire island of Manhattan, but 40ft swells will do bad things, I suppose.

As of the 5pm advisory, she's losing steam, but RI is under a warning now, so I need to make preparations to get my shit secured and myself out of here.

What's cracking me up is that she's following the same track as Floyd. She's almost also just as big (He was 580mi wide, she's 450) but I'm feeling after she buttfucks the Outer Banks we're not going to be left with much. The problem with big storms like that is that you're hit with 12 hours of tropical storm force weather before the good stuff rolls in. So once the streets are flooded and the structures have been battered around a bit with constant 40-74mph winds, the fucking hurricane force winds hit, that's what makes them so devastating. You have all that water and wind loosing stuff up for a day, and then WOOSH, eyewall raep. Even with just 80mph sustained winds, that's a lot of loosened crap that can become airborne.

We had a problem with a storm like that kickin' in the Gulf when I was younger. It was massive, and it was SLOW. We didn't get a direct hit, in fact I think it peetered and hit MS, but because of all the water it was carrying, we had a tropical storm for 4 days and got 20ft of extra water in Tampa Bay. I had stingrays swimming in my goddamn pool.

That's what makes this particular model of hurricane bad. Floyd put the Carolinas under water, and he was only a cat2 also.

Mandatory evacuations for South County in effect (Narragansett, South Kingstown, Matunuck, Charlestown, Westerly, et al.) the Newport bridges are being shut down tomorrow night and they ARE closing the hurricane barrier tomorrow at an undisclosed time as well. They're really worried about this surge. Narragansett is coastal, but it's still above sea level whereas downtown Providence isn't. That water is going to funnel into Narragansett Bay, hit the barrier, and go right up the fucking Pawtuxet and flood Warwick and Cranston again. Watch.

DIMO. GET THE FUCK OUT OF YOUR BASEMENT.  :argh!:

GUESS WHO MOVED BACK TO STONY BROOK JUST IN TIME?!?!?

YEE-HAW!

I was living in Babylon for Gloria. I'm not supposed to remember it since I was 3, apparently, but I do. I remember sitting in the basement with my parents and neighbors when the lights went out. I remember my baby brother crying, and sneaking upstairs during the eye and having my parents yell at me to get back downstairs.

We lost 7 trees in our backyard and had no power for 2 weeks. I remember my mom giving me baths in the kiddie pool outside. Because of the damage to the woods, the house got infested with ticks. :(

My first direct hit in Florida was TS Keith in 1988 which I remember flooded the hell out of our condo parking lot, and then TS Marco in 1990 sparked my fascination, and I wanted to go to school in it, despite my mom telling me no. So our neighbor gave me a ride. We didn't have a lot of kids in class, and I volunteered to walk the attendance to the office. Now, this is a Florida school, which means that it's all wing buildings with covered walkways. I remember almost getting blown away because I was 8 years old, but I went home and told my parents how awesome it was. So my dad got me a computer program (going back to a 386 DOS system, here.) that allowed me to track storms. We used to watch the advisories, write the coordinates, and plug them into the program, as this was before the satellites and computer imagery that we have now.

My dad and I had a HUGE laminated Mercator projection of the Atlantic which we would hang up in the dining room and we used to manually plot storms with dry erase markers. :)

Narragansett Bay is on the westside of the storm track, that means we get the storm surge. That means when 12ft of water is thrown into the bay, it will funnel up toward the rivers. It will hit the barrier and start filling up the bay like a trough, and it will backwash into the Pawtuxet River, which will overflow into Warwick and Coventry again.  :|

...But Providence will be dry.

Getting my evac bag ready with all my goodies. Spending tomorrow at Luna's with margaritas.

The latest forecast for RI isn't so much rain as it is wind and the storm surge, and Providence may not close the hurricane barrier after all because they're concerned about the levels of the rivers. that could be interesting. Fortunately, there's a big moat that separates me from the basin, and it's called I-95.

Providence has a parking ban in effect for tomorrow. No word on when or even IF they are going to be closing the hurricane barrier. Interior MA is already having some flash flooding per a report I just got on Twitter and TWCSocial.

the star-shaped bits obviously reinforce the windows.

as well as when something flies into them, there will be less glass shards flying all over the place.

dunno about the letters, they probably do it as well, but less so. additionally they serve to infuriate the gods and increase the lulz.

You union jack the windows to control breakage. Will it stop a tree? Fuck no, but neither will plywood. It's to stop a mess from being made. The letters are just tradition. You should always write messages to hurricanes. I really wanted to do, "LEEROY JENKINS!" On one of them this year, but I don't have enough double panes.

We're already getting tropical storm force gusts that are shaking Luna's house. I weep for my apartment, as the worst, yes worst, isn't supposed to effect us until 2pm because we're on the westside of the storm. FML.

Everyone in New England, charge your shit NOW.

I went to Narragansett last night and got pics of the surf, but I've seen worse. Today is probably intense, but they aren't letting anyone go anywhere near there. I've gotten reports of the water coming over the seawall. The hurricane barrier is fully closed, also.

If there really are people out there that need to be told to not touch downed power lines, it may be best to just remain silent and allow nature to take it's course.

Also, stop being butthurt because people are not buying your fear and are out walking around. This makes you look silly.

Been downgraded anyway--it's a tropical storm now.  Poor Irene...so much hoopla, so few hoops.

Still and all, she's claimed about what? 6 or 7 lives so far?  And they're SAYING on the talking bobblehead shows that TRONE might yet see some action...and that most of the lives are lost in the AFTERMATH of this sort of disaster...not necessarily DURING.

Still and all--stay safe and whatnot, East Coast maniacs.  Y'all seem to be doing fine, so far...*knocks on wood*

(I am just glad that the two major disasters to the areas I just visited this last month happened once I was well clear of there.  )

I gotta get into the storm supply business. Those cats are clocking some serious loot off of all the scared statesiders who have NO idea what a for-real hurricane is.

HINT: It's not what just happened on the east coast of the US. In fact, anyone who wasn't in South Carolina for Hugo or Hawaii for Iniki has probably never experienced a major hurricane making landfall in the USA, unless one of you old-timers was around for Camille.

Title: Re: The Unlimited Northeastern US Natural Disaster Fread
Post by: Suu on August 28, 2011, 10:57:35 PM
Andrew was under-estimated because it was small, and turned out to be the goddamn finger of God, and Katrina was only a category 3 when it hit, people forget that. Those levees should never have failed. I've seen worse hit NOLA in my lifetime.

Andrew leveled neighborhoods with 175mph winds in style. Katrina had to have an unmanned barge slam a levee to flood the ghetto. In fact, Andrew hit NOLA as a 4 after it leveled Miami and carved a path across FL and it STILL didn't break the levees.

Ivan was a goddamn meteorological anomaly. That whole summer was fucked up for Florida.

Irene was Floyd Mark II. Huge storm with lots of water, but not strong.

Just went to my apartment, btw. I has survived (unfortunately). I was looking for a grant out of there.

It astonishes me to no end how little people up here know about hurricanes.  :horrormirth:

YOU LIVE ON THE EAST COAST. THEREFORE, YOU CAN GET A FUCKING STORM.

DO NOT BITCH TO ME ABOUT "ALL HYPE" AND THEN CRY TO ME VIA TEXT THAT YOU LOST POWER AND "DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO" BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T "THINK IT WOULD HAPPEN".

I don't care if it's a dud. FFS, people, always have flashlights and candles. Always have extra water. Always have canned food. Why? BECAUSE YOU NEVER FUCKING KNOW.

Don't get all huffy with me and go, "Well, I had no idea a tropical storm can take down trees..." Um...sustained winds of 60mph can do some fucking damage, moron. Just like a Nor'easter.

Also, DON'T BUY FUCKING MILK AND BREAD. How are you going to keep that shit when your power is out for a goddamn week, shitneck? A quarter of the fucking state of RI is without power right now, National Grid said it could take up to a week to restore it, and you crying to me that your fridge is full of food and you can't get to a store for ice.

Christ. Shit like this is why storms are always a goddamn catastrophe. It's not the weather, it's the fucking ignorance.

Alas, poor Providence.

It survived an earthquake.  It survived a hurricane.

Tomorrow, it will fall.

Richter cooked.  The phrase, "I put some Weapon X in it.  How bad could it be?" was heard.

What will happen to the sewer system of the city by this time tomorrow is going to be epic.

Was going to head back into Arctic, but if there is no power, then forget it.

By the way, that genius was not me. Best I can figure, one of my roommates

Most of my east coast colleagues are at work--having holed up somewhere safe where the electricity's on, or otherwise the power came on last night/early this morning.

Our central offices in Princeton still haven't stated they're back at work and doing fine, however.  We're still all supposed to contact California if we have issues.

I'm not surprised, NJ was hit pretty hard yesterday.

We lost power yesterday afternoon.

It's still out.

The thing about Maine is that it is very rural, spread out.  There are still live wires down in some areas preventing tree-removal.

But work has power and so here I am.

SBU is fine, we seemed to avoid the worst of it. First day of classes canceled anyway, because the surrounding areas do not have power.

My power is out, internetting from my phone, getting occasional charges from the noisy-ass generator. A few trees down around town, no real flooding to speak of that I've personally seen. Overall, I lucked out.

x-post from the Bachmann thread:

http://www.boston.com/Boston/politicalintelligence/2011/08/bachmann-irne-was-political-message-from-god/ACJ4zJCjJoqxfDK6RT4ETN/index.html

Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann said yesterday that Hurricane Irene was a political message from God, the St. Petersburg Times reported.

"I don't know how much God has to do to get the attention of the politicians," the newspaper quoted her as telling voters during a rally in Sarasota. "We've had an earthquake; we've had a hurricane. He said, 'Are you going to start listening to me here?' Listen to the American people because the American people are roaring right now. They know government is on a morbid obesity diet and we've got to rein in the spending."

So I went LARPing in the hurricane.

THAT was WILD. The people who showed up were all crazy. I guess that includes me.

Weather was beautiful until Saturday night. They called game early, and everybody scrambled to get home before the bullshit began for real.

The roads got bad, so I stayed at my friend Dave's house near New Haven. Dave is a new homeowner, and somehow in his 29 years of life has never experienced a hurricane. So he was REALLY REALLY PREPARED for this one. He stocked his fridge with enough food for a week. He filled the bathtub up with water. He ordered 100 pizzas. He bought a generator. Apocalypse hysteria is the best kind of hysteria.

We were teasing him about it. "You sure I should sleep here? what if the roof gets ripped off? Couldn't I get crushed by busses that are getting tossed around by the hurricane?"

har har har

before he went to bed he told us "I'm going to set my alarm for 4 AM so I can go outside and just enjoy the hurricane for an hour."

whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat

I think Vermont may have a different perspective on it being a hurricane or not.

It wasn't as bad as the hype machine made it out to be, on a broad perspective.

But for those whom it was bad, it was bad, and it sucked, and it still sucks.

The locals tend to cover it better, because they seem to actually cover it from a perspective to inform.

The Weather Channel covers it from a perspective to entertain and to sell ad slots.

The Weather Channel used to be a good network.  Back when it was boring and it was just people standing in front of green screens, giving you the forecast, playing a little smooth jazz while you watch your own local forecast, and that was it.

To be fair, historic covered bridges are a big thing for the more traditional of New Englanders. How will they make more Greetings From New England postcards without the covered bridges?

Yeah, but structures don't last forever. I understand getting upset when people stupidly tear something down to build a new, less awesome one, but when Nature takes out some rickety old man-made structure, it's NOT A TRAGEDY unless someone dies. The Minneapolis bridge collapse was tragic. The Vermont historic covered bridge collapse is just a bummer.

It's pretty hard to see this corner at night currently because the power is still fucking out.

Remember when we used to be able to fix shit when it broke?

When I was in line to get my coffee, there was a lady in front of me form a near-by neighborhood.  She said that there is this big tree down that has fucked the electricity there.  They've scheduled the removal of the tree for Friday.  They probably won't have power back until next week.

Also, cold showers are not as invigorating as one might think.

Barely.

I distinctly remember that in the 70s and 80s, we fixed shit when it broke.

Now we just pray to the Machine God.

Yes, and one thing the power company SHOULDN'T do, is call you, ask you if your power is still out, and then proceed to tell you there is a crew "in the area", hinting that your shit is going to be fixed, and then, the crew doesn't come around, and your shit doesn't get fixed.  I mean, I'd rather just imagine my power company being slow and inefficient, but it's another thing to also think of them as a goddamned tease on top of all that.

When I was a kid, people hadn't learned to think of a functional government as a bad thing.  That came along when I was a teenager.  The results are fairly obvious, I think.

We're one of the last neighborhoods to get plowed in the winter, so yeah, I'm not about to hold my breath anytime soon.  Thankfully my wife's step-father brought us a generator.  So at least, we can salvage the food that's in our freezer.  The stuff in the fridge is pretty much toast.

However, there's something nasty off of Cape Verde. Her name is Katia, and she's a very organized looking tropical storm and will probably hit hurricane status tomorrow before cross the Mid Atlantic Ridge. They're saying Category 3 by Sunday a few hundred miles East of the Lesser Antilles.

Well, FUCK. I was waiting for one of these to show up, this year. She can go Gulf, though. It's that magical time of the year.

FFS, on the bead lady forum someone posted a link to a covered bridge in Vermont getting washed out and people are all "I'm crying - that's so tragic!" and I'm thinking IT'S A GODDAMN BRIDGE. It's not like anyone was on it.

To be fair, historic covered bridges are a big thing for the more traditional of New Englanders. How will they make more Greetings From New England postcards without the covered bridges?

If having a covered bridge is so important to someone... they could always...  Oh, I don't know...  BUILD ANOTHER ONE...

Sorry I didn't see this sooner. But HEY, did you know that there's a Society for the Preservation of Covered Bridges? I'm not sure if it's exclusive to New England, but regardless of overall scope it's there. I know it exists because even after 4+ years working in a research library I have no fucking clue where their newsletter gets shelved. You'd be surprised, people take their local historical landmarks surprisingly seriously (I think it gives them a sense of justification). While part of me understands the "preserve our past" mindset, part of me agrees with the "oh for fuck's sake, just rebuild it when it gets buggered" perspective. I suppose my ticket for hell is only being reaffirmed at this point.

Hurricane Irene's rampage up the East Coast has become the tenth billion-dollar weather event this year, breaking a record stretching back to 1980, climate experts said Wednesday.

Absolutely. But the trajectory this storm took is a doozy. That's why even though some people are calling it a "dud", Vermont is still under fucking water. Gloria didn't do that. Gloria just carved a path across Long Island and knocked out power and water for 2 weeks.

Also, that reminds me, Aquidneck Island has power again. FUCK. I think RI is almost back up and running entirely.

In Florida, if your home is considered "beyond repair" and has to be rebuilt, insurance will no longer pay for it to be built on the same piece of property.  I believe there are actually guidelines on how far away your new home has to be.  That all happened after Andrew.  That's when mom and dad moved further inland.

My thinking is this has to be covered when you are getting insurance quotes.  I mean if you see "hurricane" anything in your insurance paperwork you have to have a clue your home has the potential to be hit.  Well aside from being able to see water from your porch that is....

The climate changes constantly, it's a highly unstable system. Where the arguments happen is over how much of it is our fault. Personally I don't have a fucking clue the answer to that one and I'm getting hit with propaganda from both ends of the spectrum and all points in between. So this latest thing suggests that 30-odd years of ozone bashing has served to make it as bad as it was thirty-odd years ago? Reinforces my opinion that statistics can be used to say pretty much anything.

My thinking is this has to be covered when you are getting insurance quotes.  I mean if you see "hurricane" anything in your insurance paperwork you have to have a clue your home has the potential to be hit.  Well aside from being able to see water from your porch that is....

If you buy or build a house in a state prone to tornados and storms, please STFU when it gets picked up and dumped in Wyoming.  WTF did you expect?

Interesting, but there is a pretty big difference. Tornadoes don't cover nearly the territory as a hurricane and are random. Hurricanes and coastlines are like a romance, you always find them together.

People need to remember though, that we live where the disasters go. The disasters don't go where we live.

We don't get hurricanes here.

Basically, other than a few really obvious "don'ts" such as "Don't build your city on a floodplain", almost anywhere with food and water is as reasonable as anyplace else. I challenge you to find a location in the US that doesn't have one or more of the following:

*Hurricanes
*Tornadoes
*Wretched heatwaves/drought
*Buttfucking cold-ass blizzards
*Major faultlines
*Volcanoes

State Farm played shit and kinda cut and run.
They bailed out of selling homeowners ins to people but still have auto and they jacked up the rates. There were a lot of smaller companies that decided they weren't gonna pay out and they ended up being sued and going under. They'd still be in business and profiting if they'd just payed out like they were supposed to.

The insurance situation here drives me fucking nuts. You want flooding to be covered it's a separate policy, they can drop you for no reason- like a bad storm is coming, they can claim your shit isn't covered, no matter how small it is, when it is clearly written in your policy.

It's a fucking scam. All of it.

True, true, and some of us, who may or may not be playing with a full deck, LIKE the adverse weather conditions. In fact, as I've been saying, the situation is actually quite tame. I mean, seriously. i want hurricanes one week, tornadoes the next, tidal waves, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions. Blizzards followed by 125 degree temperatures. All the while tennis ball sized hail! Throw in a little bit of nuclear fall out, wild fires, and massive chemical spills, and shit, boyee, we got us one hell of a fun time, yeah?

I mean, it's not like there are any superpredators out there. Dinosaurs, giant insects, parasitic extraterrestrial lifeforms.... gotta have something fun going on, right?

You kind of skipped from "a location in the US" to the entire Earth, here. Not sure if that was intentional, because most of mid-northern Europe doesn't have all those natural nasties that you listed.

(We did kind of build most of our country on a floodplain, sort of. But that was quite intentional, not so much "OMG WTF is all this water suddenly doing here??/halp I'm drowning/my (wtf wooden) house is floating away/etc" but rather more like "Suck it, Nature, we're gonna build shit (from stone) right here below sea level AND we'll take that bit of sea right there and turn it into land just because we fucking CAN, so there." ;-) )

How did the native americans do it way back then? Did they get hurricaned, tornadoed, heatwaved, dried, frozen, earthquaked, flooded and erupted upon all the time as well?

oh BTW you forgot to mention the crazy big ass insects spiders and wildlife that's actually, you know, dangerous, instead of a bit of a nuisance and/or scared of humans like it's suppose to be.

On this Day in Weather History...
In 1897, severe thunderstorms pummeled Southeast Iowa with large hail. The hail size was not reported, but hail drifts reached six feet deep 30 to 40 miles southwest of Cedar Rapids. In 1989, severe thunderstorms raked parts of Western Oklahoma with 2 inch diameter hail and 70 mph winds.

A 22-year-old Alaska woman said on Wednesday she punched a black bear in the face to save her small dog from being carried off and possibly eaten.

Juneau resident Brooke Collins said she hit the bear Sunday night to save the life of her dachshund, Fudge. She said she discovered the bear crouched down, clutching Fudge in its paws and biting the back of the dog's neck.

"It had her kind of like when they eat salmon," Collins said Wednesday. "I was freaking out. I was screaming at it. My dog was screaming. I ran up to it ... I just punched it right in the snout and it let go."

I guess so. However, earthquakes, at least, are not really all that deadly when you don't have tall buildings made out of heavy stuff. The rest, I think, can be attributed to the Native Americans being tough as hell.

Simply existing as a human is fraught with life-threatening risks.  Life itself has never been backed by a double your money-back guarantee.  People should live wherever the fuck they want, but they should obviously be prepared for what that particular location may through at them.

Mother Nature has often enough displayed for total lack of empathy for our existence on her face.  She can squash us whenever, wherever she wishes.  But there are so damned many of us running around it really only makes a tiny, little dent.

I definitely feel empathy for those who do live, or lived, within the dent.  Many people become bound to their locations because the economy has severely hobbled their mobility.  I mean, telling a poor person they shouldn't be living in New Orleans is like telling a starving kid in Africa they shouldn't be living in Africa.  Unless they spontaneously evolve into some kind of animal with wings, they be stuck there.

No property damage, no injuries, no real problems. Thankfully, the worst that could be said was we experienced 'minor inconvenience'.

How's everyone else doing?

So let me guess, during my absence, new people started posting and they summarily decided that Roger was the sole source of all the world's ills* and that it was their divinely appointed mission to stop him?

Also, people haven't been posting as much.  Which means it's time for you to post another SSOOKN lecture.

Wizard Joseph? I see....will have to check that out.

I certainly can't blame the Hurricane for my lack of content. As for a SSOOKN lecture, I'll check what I've got in the archives. I don't have anything new to hand/nose.

Although, I was thinking of a new segment called 'Ask the hard questions' - things like:

Basically, other than a few really obvious "don'ts" such as "Don't build your city on a floodplain", almost anywhere with food and water is as reasonable as anyplace else. I challenge you to find a location in the US that doesn't have one or more of the following:

*Hurricanes
*Tornadoes
*Wretched heatwaves/drought
*Buttfucking cold-ass blizzards
*Major faultlines
*Volcanoes

Quote from: Nigel on September 01, 2011, 02:54:51 AMBasically, Earth is a really shitty place to decide to live, and we should have thought of that before building here.

Didn't you used to be covered in glaciers?

Also, you killed off all of your big scary animals.

The thing is, on a long timeline, every place on earth has some pretty serious drawbacks.

I live surrounded by volcanoes and earthquakes, but I've never experienced a major disaster. I might or might not; it just depends. At some point, one will happen, and that will suck for everyone, and then we'll get over it. That's just what people do. Native Americans have lots of stories about catastrophic natural disasters, including some really spine-shilling stories about the great flood and the tsunami here, but the people who didn't die just got over it and carried on.

There really wasn't much in the way of extensive damage.  It was mostly tree limbs and a few old trees.  They just all happened to all fall on the power lines, or so it seemed.  As of this morning there are still over 3000 Mainers without power.  It's just that Maine is so rural and spreadout, sometimes it takes them awhile just to find where the lines are fucked up.

Yeah, you can tell already by the forecast models. This one is gonna hurt.

I may be an East Coast girl through and through, but you can never pay me enough to live anywhere on the Carolina coastline. May as well just put the fucking target on my house. The Gulf coast was rough as it was, but the odds of a direct hit on Tampa Bay are a lot lower than the OBX.

I wouldn't put your dukes down up here though, either. Because even if it doesn't turn, it will float up the coastline as a low and drop a shit ton more water we don't need.

New models have Katia getting within a couple hundred miles of Norfolk, then making a big northward hook and pushing back out to sea.

Hope they're right. I'm never fully willing to trust in the bounce-off effect from a westward-moving high pressure system.

It's just that if this thing forms up and takes the traditional track I'll be running the exact wrong way.

On the other hand, it's written into our contracts that if we've already started the contract and are threatened by a tropical system and have to run for a safe port, the clients have to pay us the full rate for the additional days, so I might actually come out ahead on this one. You know, aside from a few days of violent seasickness.

Also, Katia is on direct route to Scotland, but will probably just be a very large storm by the time it arrives.  Besides, no-one would be able to tell if a hurricane had hit Scotland.  "Oh, its wet, windy, rainy and people are stocking up on food and boarding up their windows because of a tropical storm?  I thought it was an Old Firm match".

Due to flooding fears, officials in northeastern Pennsylvania are calling for a mandatory evacuation of communities along the Susquehanna River — an area that was inundated in the historic Agnes flood of 1972.

The order affects more than 100,000 residents.

Luzerne County Management Agency official Frank Lasiewicki told The Associated Press Thursday the river is projected to crest at nearly 41 feet between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. ET Thursday — the same height as the levee system protecting riverfront communities including Wilkes-Barre and Kingston.

Everything that is geographically wrong with living in the Northeastern US has happened in the past few weeks.

Earthquakes. Minor, yes, but we can have them.

Hurricanes. Most of the coast is very low. Either on sea level or below it.

Flood plains on the coast. Yes.

Flood plains in the valleys in the mountains. Very yes.

...And an exuberant amount of people in the way of all this shit.

Please tell me this will be hitting us from the 19th - 22nd I'm off to take a rank noob round Loch Lomond for 4 days and a spot of storm-force would make the trip a total peach!

And this is new...how?

We haven't seen the sun in the better part of a week thanks to Lee, and how we have her bands.  :argh!:

I bet the surf is killer right now because of where she is, though. Fortunately, even if she extrapolates, which is rare, she's going to Nova Scotia.

To be honest, I was poking a bit of fun at the "OMG HURRI-MURDER-RAPE-ICANE" people.

"Katia's heading up the East Coast!  She's right the fuck next to us!  Everybody horde food!  It's gonna get CLOUDY up in this bitch!"

There are way too many fucking idiots here. Seriously. I want a loaf of bread so I can make grilled cheese, damnit. I don't want it to horde through a flyby.

One of these days, we're gonna get hit with a really fucking nasty storm. I'll have my house full of bottled water, rice, and cans...and the rest of New England is going to have spoiled milk and moldy bread, and then have to resort to cannibalism for the whole week it will take for the power to come back on.

...I will also have a 12 gauge.

We were supposed to get nice weather from some high pressure area related to your Irene hurricane.

But instead we got days and days of rain.

And not nice rain, or I mean, reasonable rain, noooooo we got soaking wet in 20 seconds like a fucking shower out there zillions of mega hyper rain.

Well it's dry now.

But everything is wet.

And something's leaking through the upper neighbours balcony. Leaked on top of my clothes that hung out to dry!!! (Yeah I hung them out to dry in a fucking ultra rain gigashower but it never actually really blows much inside my balcony for some reason except when the fucking upper balcony starts dripping through the fucking concrete goddamnit my pance were soaked)

It's certainly...(barf)...nice of Katia...(barf)....to have left those...(barf)....16-20 foot swells behind.

Should lay down to 4-7 feet by late tonight, but sweet jesus it sucks right now.

The way I see it, I used to spend just as much time throwing up when I worked in a restaurant, it was just for different reasons.

Now I get paid alot more to throw up and don't have to destroy my liver in the process.

I wonder how much of the 40 pounds I've lost since February is from diet and exercise and how much is from inadvertent bulemia. :lulz:

Yeah, thanks. We've been told to expect structural damage and falling trees. The last time we had a hurricane I was living right on the coast, and a little fella called Ian was blown right through my window at 3 am. Nice bloke, he was ever so sorry. We walked down to Chesil Beach, and saw 60 foot waves breaking over the top. We had to retreat because there were pebbles the size of tennis balls in the breakers, getting flung through the air. An unforgettable night. Over a million trees blown down across the country. Dozens of people killed. I'm going to batten down the hatches and stay indoors for this one though. I'm right on top of a hill these days. So flooding should be minimal.

I just got this image of a man being blown clear through a window in some quaint English home by the sea. Somewhere in this, tea is involved.

High winds warnings have been issued for most of the south.

I'm not expecting any problems though, because I have no pressing engagements over the next few days, and the the only tree within 500 yards of my house, I cut down last summer.  So instead, I'm going to get drunk and put on the 24 hour news.

Looks like Maria is losing steam. Also looks like it doesn't matter, as we're making killer time heading south. We've already passed south of Cape Fear and should be at AUTEC sometime on tuesday.

I thought Cape Fear was a made up place, just for the Movie. (The Robert Mitchum one, not the remake)

Yep. It's the southernmost of the 3 major headlands on the North Carolina coast, the other two being Cape Hatteras and Cape Lookout.

It rained for a little bit, from around lunch time onwards.  Not even very hard rain.

Irene was my first taste of hurricane and it was a tropical storm by the time it hit here. Iowa had it worse with baseball hail, and flooding. So I find that weird.

Yeah. Bit disappointing really. Had a bit of a squall earlier, the wind didn't even seem to know which way to blow from. Then it went all sunny again, and now it's quiet. I feel cheated..

Well, there was this huge light in the sky, I could see it, even through the clouds. I just assumed it was the sun, because it's too early for it to have been the moon.

eta; Found this, and thought of you.
