Well, it's certainly good to meet someone for whom the introductions thread is not good enough. I can't speak for everyone, but I - for one - am always excited when someone so obviously above the level of the hoi polloi comes along to grace us with their presence.
In addition, Mr. Alred, I am guessing from your name that you identify with a certain made up cosmology? I certainly hope so, because that would be new.
Oh, yeah, and the pool's on the roof.
That is as it should be - and I will call you George

I don't know who you guys are talking about. I want to apologize for being a bit confrontational. I was a bit put off by being confronted as soon as I walked in the door.
It is clear that there has been some problems here in the past and you people are a bit trigger shy. If it is all the same to you I will either sit quietly until you no longer think that I am somebody that I am not, or if that is not okay I will just move on down the road.

Lurking is strongly advised for all newcomers, so you deciding to do just that is a step in the right direction.
We occasionally get people who can't or won't fit in, or they just want to troll, and they frequently come back out of spite after they've been driven off. That's why a lot of newbies will be accused of being a returning troll.
There's some fantastic threads that illustrate our perfectly honed sense of Troll, I'll see if I can't bump some.
Put that on the front page. I am actually a pretty decent guy, as far as that goes. I do have my moments but they do not include being a whipping boy because I did not put an intro in the right place. Seriously, I thought the site was good and decided to see what the forum was like. Since some jerk was here before me I get treated rather poorly as soon as I walk in.
Nice place. Do all newcomers get treated like this or did I violate a special name convention?
Look people, clearly I upset some people by being here and not appreciating being confronted and treated poorly upon arrival.

Advice: Don't get defensive, even if you think you're right. That'll make things worse, I promise.
It isn't just "some guy" or even a couple of people, it's just about every newcomer we get. There's a few who don't get the standard troll call, and that's because they are nice and act like a real person straight off the bat, instead of trying to prove how weird they are.
Other than that, all I can say is that Dok Howl is just a cranky old man who is seriously annoyed by everyone, and hates people who act stupid.
ETA: Also, the whole "I'm wacky/crazy/a really real discordian" thing is so played out that people have a tendency to jump right away, too, so it isn't just Dok.

You sound upset. Don't you know you're bleeding in shark-infested waters?
Did you look around at all before posting? It doesn't seem like it, else you'd know that a lot of newcomers get the same cheerful welcome... and you'd probably have some idea of which actions get which reactions out of the regulars here.
The rest of this thread will likely go as a great number of other introduction threads go. Regular posters here will talk mostly about you, rather than to you, with the occasional negative reply to something you have tried to interject into their discussion, in your own defense. All the "BAAWWWWWWW" in the world won't protect you from this, so I'd suggest finding some threads where you can use your time more wisely and creatively.
Your introduction didn't go so well, nor did what appears to be an appeal to compassion. Your posts are reading to me like a victim's defense. Can you see, by re-reading this thread, how well that tone is working?
If you keep doing what you're doing, you'll keep getting what you're getting.
Look around. Find something which interests you. If it's this thread (which the topic of is now "Count the similarities between new guy and these people we didn't like") then by all means, go ahead... but lacking any knowledge of how this particular tribe of monkeys works, you're unnecessarily handicapping yourself.
(Also, what Freeky said)
You're probably OK, n00b. Grow a thick skin, laugh at yourself, and come out of your corner without pretense, and everything will be fine. Well, until it isn't, which will also happen.
On another note, this forum is CRAWLING with hot females, gorgeous gay men, and even rugged heterosexuals, which is unusual even for today's Internet. So go find the corseted pixie in Spagbook, and take heart that such things exist.

No, I was treated just fine when I showed up. I was part of a brief spurt of noobs that were viewed positively.
Words of advice:
Read any thread that contain the words "unlimited" and "fail" in the same title. Don't do what that person did.
Don't act weird to look cool. Cause it doesn't look cool.
Your junk stays in your pants when venturing outdoors. Don't touch it either, unless you're in your bedroom. And don't tell us about it.
If a number of people tell you you're wrong about something, accept it and try to see it from their point of view. If you still think you're right, just agree to disagree and drop it.
Don't alter others' pictures in humorous (or offensive, as that particular person's additions were) ways if you're not going to post your own picture.

I think that almost every noob on the forum behaves in some weird retarded way, and it takes a month or two for him to adjust to the thought that the only way to make a good impression is to be himself. My first posts about a year ago were totally retarded. Also I tend to notice, that so many people act like "I am Prince ChaoDorkington master of shit and butterflyes. I enjoy cows and find carrots interesting" in their first posts, untill they notice that they're not in a DnD forum. Just how I see things after a year on the forums.

Valuable constructive critisism
A very close internet community, where oftentimes we actually meet up in meat space
No heavy handed modding

You may be wondering, at this point, what is so great about this board that you should even WANT to make an effort to stick around and be accepted?
Here's a short list of the positive things about this board that you more than likely won't find anywhere else:
Awesome projects that are actually being done somewhere by someone
A lot of truly excellent writers
Valuable constructive critisism
A very close internet community, where oftentimes we actually meet up in meat space
No heavy handed modding

Well, yeah. But I just realized that when a noob gets here all people ever say is what they shouldn't do if they want to stay, and never say why they should want to stay at all.
Because once you get past all the hate-fests and gun jumping, this board is really, really awesome. Even the hate-fests and gun-jumping.

On another note, this forum is CRAWLING with hot females, gorgeous gay men, and even rugged heterosexuals, which is unusual even for today's Internet. So go find the corseted pixie in Spagbook, and take heart that such things exist.

In all fairness, I did the same thing when I joined. But then again, I didn't act like a jerk.
I declare the dipshit a lost cause based on the fact that he lumped ALL responses, both supportive and abusive, together without any appreciation for the people who said nice or welcoming/helpful things to him.
That right there shows me he isn't looking to make friends.
For the record, I'm going to hold out hope until he makes another dipshit move and dismisses all help he's received so far again.
I think it's pretty impressive how much acrimony is being displayed after only 13 posts.

I sort of blame myself. I should have put an emote in my first response.
On the other hand, he also got all butthurt over the Cthulu jokes.
I really don't have the time or inclination to hold a noob's hand nowadays. If they can't be bothered to lurk a little and get a basic feel for the forum, then I can't be bothered to have a charitable disposition to their literary turdlings.

Yeah, there's that, too.
Thing is, there are plenty of people here who never got shat on when they joined, because they didn't act retarded. There are also people who DID get shat on who reacted with some humor, and stuck around.
Almost everyone here has been through the mill at one time or another, either as noobs, or later on. If a noob comes into a Discordian board and doesn't even
look around, then can't handle the fun when he sticks his crank in the meatgrinder, then screw 'em.
I was treated pretty nicely when I arrived. (Of course i didn't arrive a puns a blazing either ;) )
But I do remember a particular dust-up I had with a couple of the other long-timers not too far into my pd.com residency. It does kind of make you a bit stronger on the other side of it, if you survive. :)

Pixie and Nurse Freeky were also treated very nicely, as was Nurse Mayhem and Von Melee (the last two showing that our judgement isn't always skewed toward dumping on people), as well as Richter, Suu, and a few others.
sure, some people hit it off right off the bat
there's also a lot of people which suck at first, but will stop sucking once they "get" the culture around here. As of this post, there are 537465 posts on this forum, scattered over 15 slightly different subforums, I think it's understandable to take a while to figure out what our culture is like. Our brand of discordianism / social protocol is very specific & hard to explain.
btw, who cares if they didn't post in the really real for real intro thread? I sure don't care.
I do get the sinking sense I'm about to be hit with the OKAY NOW WE MUST ALLOW ALL IDIOTS TO POST ANYTHING THEY WANT response

Neither do I, really. It's not like we have a limited number of threads we can use before we run out.
It's really just that I'm a bad person, and I like to dump on certain kinds of people. If those people bounce back, then I am proven wrong in my assessment of them, and everyone wins. If they don't, then I get to be a grade A prick for a little while, in which case, again, everyone wins.
I like to think of myself as a public service, like PBS. I mean, if PBS occasionally melted down and turned your radio into a pile of molten plastic, or just randomly insulted people on the donors' list.
You'll notice I never actually posted ITT (or pretty much any other contentious n00b intro thread). I don't generally shit on people unless they actively do something to deserve it, like most of the TCC posters.
But if someone hasn't taken the time to do any basic reading on a place, like even checking out today's threads in Apple Talk, which would give them an idea of how this place is, then I'm not going to intervene on their behalf when other people take them to task, either.

Good points, I take back what I said.
Cram, I'd like to gently point out a few things.
- Two posts (two posts) into the thread, and we've jacked the topic into making Lovecraft jokes. Instead of going with it and riffing off a few of his own, he gets all pissy. Even if you don't lurk, and even (especially) if you're a pinealist Discordian noob into sillyness, how the hell is anyone worth their salt not going to join in the fun? The fact that he decided to get all huffy isn't a very good sign.
- It wasn't all bashing. The majority of people posting their first comments here made suggestions and helpful ProTips, as we always do. It can't really be helped that alzhred's subsequent posts were both dismissive and aggressive.
- after a few pages, it reallys stopped being about alzhred. It was more about the general pattern and acceptance or non-acceptance of the people here. He even apologized around page 4, and we pretty much said, "ok", and moved on. The ball's in his court, and his posts from here on out will be judged on their merits.

I'd like to gently point out that I wasn't even talking about alzharararehed.
I wanted to point out that our culture around here has shifted, we have much less patience for n00bs now than we did 2 years ago. Which I think is weird, I always liked the 50-post rule. I'm good friends IRL with a few people who have gotten flamed off the board prior to 50 posts, and I feel like they might have stayed if they had a little more time to get adjusted before they were put into Fight Or Flight mode.
I've had friends flamed off the board before too, some deserved it and some perhaps did not... this place is not for everyone.

Okay.
I always suggest to my friends that they lurk a while, though, and that they be nice when they do post. It's worked for just about all of them, though many only stop in very occasionally, and one or two eventually put their boot in it anyway.

Difference between this place and most others is, in almost every case, those that leave do so under their own power.

and also to be clear, I don't really give a shit what happened to the OP and I'm not mad at anybody

Again, people like Pixie and Freeky are still here.
There's 3 kinds of people we're looking at:
1. Those that are nice, and get along fine.
2. Those that are asshats, and can take what they dish out with some form of humor, and
3. Those that are asshats, and get all butthurt when it comes back their direction.
Plus, people like RWHN, you, Mangrove and (sometimes) me will bring up the 50-post suggestion when things might be getting out of hand.

How would he have a reason to stay? He never lurked, never looked around at what's going on, nothing.
But why should he, when it's our responsibility, right?
I didn't check to see whether he lurked, but it doesn't seem like he did. It's obviously nobody's responsibility to hold his hand, but I notice that the ones who are made to feel welcome tend to stay and blend in. Just a neutral observation, really. I'm not saying anyone made a mistake.
Shit, it seems to me (as a person who joined 2 years ago) that we're way the fuck nicer to noobs now. Look at all the excellent noobs we've gleaned in just the last six months, mostly without any aggression and hardly any hazing. You just didn't notice 'em because they slipped into our folds like a greased dick.
Well, I do think when the 50-post suggestion was first put in place there was a bit more of a grace period then there is now. But, we're all under a lot more stress now too, so there is that to consider I suppose. This is not necessarily a critical observation, just an observation based upon my 5 year history round these parts.
