We could also use some Illuminati letterhead, if anyone can dig it out of the Principia.

This is an awesome idea.

Lets do it! Hell, if you give me the references, I'll send a letter or two!

I'm working on the Colbertgasm wiki page (http://www.poee.co.uk/bip/index.php?title=Colbertgasm). Here's what I need your help with:

  • I need to find videos or references to the explicit Discordian references on the Colbert Report
  • We need to pick a date to flood them with letters. This project will not achieve its intended effect unless we hit them with zillions of letters in a short amount of time. I'm suggesting (off the top of my head) February 17th - 23rd
  • We need Jon and Steven's contact information. This might be found on colboard.com or comedycentral.com. A phone call to their HQ might reveal something too.
  • Colbert's Writers - since they have nothing better to do - have been having an awesome time pranking the public. Youtube has some videos of this - there may be explicit news elsewhere. Can anyone dig up some links for me? I can't access youtube at werk.

Can anyone help with these?

DAMN you make that look better than I did!!

I did find the link to the Illuminati video (I think it was in the Wiki entry I wrote), buit I can't find the Golden Apple one in their archives. IIRC it was called "Advice to the Gods" and showed up around July 26th or so.

Maybe we should suggest a date when they should say these codes? I don't catch their shows every night, but if we all say to make a reference on MARCH FIFTH (walpurgisnaught!) (sp?) we can watch that show with high scrutiny.

also necessary: HELP NEEDED:

more sample letters for people to send. We need to get the wiki set up to A+ leve so that we can begin distributing the hell out of it. We really only have a week to contact EVERY DISCORDIAN IN EXISTENCE.

Here's a suggested outline for these things:

Letters to Colbert:

-Greet Him
-Identify which sect of the Illuminati you're from (make one up, but make it sound important)
-Offer him an opportunity to join.
-In order to prove his dedication, he must find some way to say ____ on the air
-Close with a quote in latin, secret code, or some mumbo-jumbo

Letters to Stewart:

-Greet Him
-Identify which sect of Discordia you're from (make one up, but make it sound like it's a lot of people)
-Offer him an opportunity to join.
-In order to prove his dedication, he must find some way to say ____ on the air
-Close with a joke or a quote from the Principia

You don't have to get too longwinded or fancy-grabass. It doesn't even have to be funny. The trick here is quantity, not quality!

I don't expect our recruits will have enough 'Think For Yourself' juice to come up with these on their own. So we'll need to provide as many letters as possible.

We do need your help, as I'm swamped at work and also doing like four OMGASM projects at once.  :fnord:

As I was updating a letter I double checked and Walpurgisnacht is the night of April 30 to May 1, not March ;-). However, March 5th would be a good date anyway. I'll stick it in the sample letters until we figure out something better.

Would Colbert really be able to pull off a whole sentence in Latin on the air, as a sign? Might be a bit too bold...

oh, he doesn't have to say anything in Latin. We just want him to say some obvious Illuminati phrase such as IMMANENTIZE THE ESCHATON or EWIGE BLUMENKRAFT (which he actually said on the air last year) or reference Bavaria or something  like that.

Something in Latin: In Consensio Perfectus -- In Harmony Complete, or "Perfection through Conformity"

The ides of March are a long way away. In my experience, people lose focus if a project's end-date is too far away. I personally think March 5th is pretty far away too (over a full month), but it gives us time to distribute this idea through all of discokind
Title: Re: Colbertgasm
Post by: tyrannosaurus vex on January 30, 2008, 04:22:00 PM
Warning Jon Stewart to beware the Ides of March might be good comedic content, but depending on the dickishness levels of his lawyers, it might also be construed as a threat. Just sayin.

Agreed, quick and immediate... Right now, they have no writers and are starving for content (see last night's Colbert show). If they start getting weird letters in the next few weeks while the strike is still on, I think we have a much better chance of them playing our game ;-)

Large sizes could be cool too. I'm just saying use the distressed/pixellated element with awareness.

I might rebuild some of these to look clean and crisp if I ever have the time.

Still an awesome resource, Rat.

prepackage everything.

like the copypasta Cain made for the GLP raid.

make it as easy as possible for people, just a PDF to print, an address where to send it to.

and whatever else you want them to do, give them the possibility of their own creative input, but if they wanna be lazy and still join, they should be able to without much thinking or work.

This got brought up in IRC and should be noted:

Someone should send a letter coded in the Zwack Cypher. Someone else from somewhere else should send him a photocopy of the page out of the Illuminatus! Appendix that has the Zwack tables.

ATTN: SHOP WIZARDS and WRATHFUL PAINTERS

Your talents are needed to produce images for COLBERTGASM

We need a sig size image

A stamp sized image

An avatar sized image (like 100 x 100, and a copy at 75 x 75)

And a few straight-up ads of varying sizes.

Suggested imagery:

Colbert + Illuminati symbols
Stewart + Discordian symbols

A big shiny COLBERTGASM logo.

We'll spill these all over the web with links to Colbergasm.

BUZZ WEEK is Feb 17th - Feb 23rd. At the time of this writing we have one week to get ready.

My piece was designed to be printable so we can mail our Third Outer Head some copies from random locals. I've come up with one poster design, and I could really use feedback, yo (yah, that was directed @ everybody)....

I am super excited about this Colbergasm thing. I'm getting a bunch of letters prepped to be mailed. I don't have much to do Saturday, so I might drive around to different towns in the area to drop letters in the mail from different locations. :D

That animated Colbert thing is GENIUS, btw.

Alright guys, we've gotta do some thinking re: this

"ME" in this is my buddy HAL PHILLIPS who has a friend who works at the Daily Show.

QuoteMe: Hey, Zach?
I have a question.
Zach: shoot
Me: You interned at the Daily Show, right?
Zach: yes
Me: Do you happen to know who reads fan mail?
Like, would Jon Stewart read it himself?
Zach: probably not, no
Me: You think it's like, they'd pass it on to him if it seemed notable, but throw generic "you're so great" stuff in the trash?
Sent at 11:26 AM on Monday
Zach: yeah, i mean, it all depends
most of the fanmail is from legit crazy people
or people who want to send in story ideas
Me: Oh, yeah, I don't mean like people who wanna submit.
Zach: "this crazy thing happened in my town and it would be cool if you did a piece on it!"
Me: I mean like "I'm your biggest fan, I've followed your career since blah blah blah"
Zach: there was this one woman with brain damage who would send jon these long diary entries with pretty grotesque photos
Me: haha
Zach: yeah, there are lots of those standard fanmail letters
Me: Did he see the brain-damaged diary entries?
Or does someone else go through that and just chuck it?
Zach: i don't think he ever really sees them
he might glance quickly, but they mostly go to his assistant
Me: Hm, OK
Thanks man
Zach: why do you ask?
did you send photos of your brain surgery to jon stewart?
(yes, i saw those)
Me: Nah... a friend of mine wanted to send fan mail and thought they'd be more likely to actually read it if it was snail mail.
And I was just wondering if they actually do see it.
If I DO have brain surgery, though, I'll definitely send in photos.
Zach: honestly, unless there's something of value to say.. fanmail is seen as nice, but kind of pointless
if he wants to send something, he should call the main number and ask what the best bet is
i forget the main number's desk, though
Me: Cool.
That's what I wanted to know... thanks man!

Not much to discuss... As far as I understood it, we pretty much figured he didn't read the mail himself, and it was filled with crazy people.

That's why I thought the point was to get many, many people sending in similar stuff at about the same time, so the person sorting it would suddenly find dozens upon dozens of letters delaring Colbert/Stewart discordian Princes, or Illuminati heads, or something.

One or two letters would be discarded, but stacks of them...

My thought as well... Jakes are notoriously difficult to impact anyone with 'people' and 'assistants', unless there's unusual quantities...

Another thought, Stewart and Colbert are currently (at least they appear to be) starved for content.

Everyone involved should be mailing 15 or so pieces.  Start with one, then send two, then three etc each day after each the other.  Steadily increase the volume.

Naturally, I can't help, because there is no fucking way I am sending fan mail from the UK, but have you mentioned any of this to the Facebook Discordians?

1. Writers' strike will end in a month or so. Get on this quick.
2. Why would the Illuminati be sending correspondence to a publicly available address, to be read by some semi-anonymous/unimportant intern?
3. We need a locker at Grand Central Station, a pair of sneakers, a post-it note, two (authentic) bottles of kindergarten-grade paste from 1977, and a physical object of emotional significance for each of the two targets.

Seriously: if 10 of us send letters, even if it amounts to 200 pieces of mail, it will be plainly evident that there are probably only 10 people involved since every piece of mail is postmarked at the point of origin. Better plan: send mail from locations with different originating post offices, or even better, send a ready-to-mail letter to each of 15 friends all in different cities and have them drop their letters in mailboxes where they live.

We also need to conspire on the topic of return addresses, since sometimes mail will not be delivered without a return address. I suggest we pick some off-the-wall return address and have everyone put that return address on their letters. At the very least, this will prove that there is a link between all the letters.

Hi Telarus.

I appreciate your efforts in helping get the word out about Colbertgasm. Here's a sampling of what I thought of in response to your poster.

What reaction do you want people to have when they see it? I'm a bit confused as to what you were going for.

Why are the seals floating in space between type in image? Is that cuneiform? What purpose does it serve? Why does Colbert have all those buttons on? What message are you trying to send with them? Who is your audience for the poster?

I think you should have one headline that's clearly a headline, (if you have more to say, make that a subhead) and something tangible that you want people to do (visit the Colbertgasm wiki at the very least?). Right now everything is a bit jumbled together, which doesn't seem to fit with the well-oiled conspiracy that is the Illuminati.

Also, consider the aims of Colbertgasm. I don't think Colbert + Illuminati = Colbertgasm. It's more specific than that.

GASM/ELF recruitment messages have gone out to three LJ groups, two MySpace groups, the Pranksters class at maybelogic.net and to a couple Discordian bloggers that have a decent readership. 23AE seems to be throwing errors whenever I try to post there.

Hi Telarus.

Hey! Nice to meet you Net.

QuoteI appreciate your efforts in helping get the word out about Colbertgasm. Here's a sampling of what I thought of in response to your poster.

What reaction do you want people to have when they see it? I'm a bit confused as to what you were going for.
Glad to have found some active OM agents!     Srsly? Purely a fit of artistic gnosis. The pic comes from his campaign media (found it on some men's magazine website where I found his "college nickname"). The thing's a seriously layered photoshop file right now, and as such is totally modular. Intent going into this was to work with the colbert media I found on the net, and the concept of inducting him into the Illuminati. This would be less advertisement for the GASM as an actual piece of the mailing material. What would your reaction be to getting 20-30 of these with your face on them? LoL. And as I've mention to tosk, if I know colbert's character well enough, all this random correspondence we're sending him should have his own picture all over it.

QuoteWhy are the seals floating in space between type in image? Is that cuneiform? What purpose does it serve? Why does Colbert have all those buttons on? What message are you trying to send with them? Who is your audience for the poster?
I'll take the button question first: As my poster(s?) will be cut-up/collage I wanted to use an immediately recognizable, fairly recent image of him. The raised-eyebrow smirk is what he sells, along with media buzz, and the button-armored colbert, selling that smirk is _why_ we're inducting him into the Illuminati. I've seeded his chest with a few pyramids [obvious], a few other faces (weishaupt, crowley, raw) [obscure], and if you examine this image with an image manip. program you'll see a kallisti.apple in the masonic button [srsly obscure]. The random text and runes, and geoetic circles are eye candy and there to distract any haphazard audience from the real message (the title, plus the buttons), and to give it a rubber-stamped official type look.

QuoteI think you should have one headline that's clearly a headline, (if you have more to say, make that a subhead) and something tangible that you want people to do (visit the Colbertgasm wiki at the very least?). This is excellent advice, thanks for being my editor for the moment, Net! I agree that subtitle should be shrunk down (I just came up with the Illuminati saying by spinning one of the Pentabarf commandments, but it really works if you read it as if you were colbert). As to your other points, should I whip one up that invites people to the colbertGasm wiki? if so what should it say, and where?

If I got 30 of these with my face on them I'd probably start carrying a gun.

Tell-a-walrus, I'm not so sure random for random's sake is the best fit for Colbert materials.

Illuminati stuff ought to be funny or so serious you're not entirely sure it's been faked. The more nonsensical, loose, whatever-comes-out-stuff seems better suited for propaganda targeted at Stewart.

I think any poster designed for general public viewing has to have the information needed to get involved and very clearly communicate it's message. But I don't think the time and money involved in making, printing, and putting up a ton of posters promoting Colbertgasm will be worth it in terms of cost-benefit at this point. Interweb promotion is quick, targeted, and cheap, so I say we stick to that.

One last thing about the poster. Why waste all of those symbols in your poster in one go? Why not spread all of them out across 10-20 different letters? One or two per letter. It would help make them all unique and personalized. I'm looking at the letter-writing like this: it's an opportunity to have all the fun of fraud, without the whole legal repercussions thing. And no matter how you look at it, we've just got to produce a huge volume of mail from the 17th-23rd.

ideas...

official illuminati postcards?

a little known fact, also, about the USPS is that they will mail damn near anything unpackaged, allowing proper postage is attached, within reason.

you wanna send in a painting/poster/cardboard, etc...a shoe was suggested in one of my favourite K.L.U.T.Z. books growing up.

mailing premade letters with an envelope and postage to people to mail out from other places...good idea, though anyone who wants to do this is going to have to pony up for a lil' mo' dough (postage plus postage, plus postage for your owns letters that you will be mailing...certainly don't forget to do that last part.)

If anyone has exceptional handwriting, particularly in flow-y, flowery calligraphy, i think a really nice handwritten letter on the stationary (any -Illumin- stationary) would have a nice effect included in this mass of mail.

i also heard Stewart say on his show last night the strike might be over MUCH sooner than we thought.

as a plan B, i would like to suggest that the ColbertGASM/StewartGASM enter a McCain style-100 year campaign, possibly even taking it to the Colbertnation Homepage. not exactly Raid Style, mind you.

i know there are already people from here, over there. just thoughts. i'm printing a ton of letters tomorrow. mailing them out to some helpers. i'm not sure how much 'a ton' is, to be honest. we'll see.

Title: Re: Colbertgasm
Post by: Cain on February 14, 2008, 01:35:48 PM
On the one hand, they can't take credit, as Discordanism is built into the entire aim.  Also, it makes us work with them and vice-versa, creating linkage between our two similar groups (there are a LOT of Discordians on the Colboards, given their size and relative Discordian distribution).

On the other hand, well, it depends if we want to use this to get the attention of people like the Colboards, or forge the alliance while undertaking the project, and hope some sort of mutual cooperation arises out of it.
Title: Re: Colbertgasm
Post by: Iron Sulfide on February 14, 2008, 08:47:07 PM
of course i have absolutely no way of confirming this, but Colbert gives me the impression that he's on the Colboards at least sometimes...whenever he advertises the board on his show, he mentions "i'll be watching you."

if we could somehow introduce a large "illuminati" or "discordian" presence that is recognised on the boards, we might be able to get his attention that way, assuming he's not here, now, reading our plans already (as hoopla suggested a time ago)...

there's a thread on the forum somewhere about exploits on the Colboards, already; still, i think we should figure out close to exactly what existing accounts people have over there, so we can start planning a cyber presentation. maybe a new section on the wiki? iono...i'm wearing my "vote Cthulhu" shirt, so i'm feeling rather demoncratic.

my first self-criticism: how exactly would the Illuminati make it's presence known on the interwebs? Classically, they're very clandestine and secretive... i draw a blank at the moment.

Can we use some Discordian terms to perhaps get them over here for a brief conversation? I mean if we have "old useless memes"  like 23 pineal and fnord, why not use them as breadcrumbs? Surely we should be able to craft something that would be obvious to Discordians and not obvious to everyone else?

If we had insiders on the board... they may have some useful ideas on getting the boards to assist. :fnord:

I like the idea of getting some insiders.

BTW, if you do a board search for the term Discordian, you'll find more than a few posters who have publically referred to themselves as that.  I suggest contacting those first, and seeing how it goes from there, who they recommend etc

But they're also known for being very paranoid. So, like, if we left an odd, unexplainable post with nothing really special about it other than it's utter nonsense (I've got a good quote from a well-known conspiracy, but I'm not sure if it's relevant to the Illuminatti) then, when someone posts a reply asking what it's about, someone else pops up and says something like "We know what we're doing. We're watching you, [name of replier]. The Golden Dawn approaches."

*I had something that actually had something to do with them being paranoid, but I had a better idea afterwards. Still, ph34r!

Just a quick note:
-Issues about mailing addresses. Good point to bring up, didn't want it to get lost up thread. Anything new? Also, yah, the writers got back this Wednesday. Do we still want to aim for the 17th thro the 23rd?

-Net. Internalizing your reactions should have something new out in a little while. Would individual clip-art be helpful to people building their own letters?

-Speaking of clip-art, I found this:
Seem's fairly old-school, and has a lot of the good rubber-stamp identifying marks of the POEE. There's also a lot of really good art about Emperor Norton in this girl's account, and she's obviously a bit savvy. We could use a lot of this stuff for the Stewart letters.

Cram's right. We need to ramp this up into high gear. As such, I'll be making a few Clip Art Posts, which I will come back and edit to add more pics to when I find them/make them. If you reply with a link, I'll throw the image into these posts.

This first one will be the Colbert clip Art/AISB letterhead-footers. {Next one down will be Sewart Clip Art/DisSoc-POEE letterhead-footers}.

Having a bunch of modular text and rantings to allow people to fill out their own letters would srsly help. Anyone out there want to take a crack at playing a Grand Illuminatus? Here's a letter RAW wrote to a whole bunch of people. (http://appendix.23ae.com/memos/081168RAW01.gif) let it inspire you. Although I'm probably going to rip the letterhead off and re-create it for the Stewart side.

Call out ideas if you think just part of an image may be usefull, or you want to see iconography from different images together. This is what I'm sinking time into tonight, so a useful audience is a good audience. ^__^

I can't state how important it is that we have as many participants as we can.

Participating doesn't just mean sending in letters. You guys here at PD are the core OMGASM crew, and we need your help getting the word out, too. Please tell your friends, your forums, and anyone who will listen.

If you're on the fence about participating, just take the plunge and play along. It feels really cool to be a part of something like this.

I'm posting to Irreality today. I figure with all the pre-prep'd material people should be able to get alot of it and their own material out by friday-saturday. Also, still working on clip-art.

So, are we going with the addresses on the BIP wiki, and just relying on sheer mass of mail to get most of the weird stuff thro?

yeah, we're hoping that those addresses are accurate. And we're hoping that a large volume will suffice.

even though today is the 27th and any mail posted after today- especially from the west coast or overseas- will probably not make it to the jon stewart or colbert shows in time for the march 5th target, i intend to keep sending mail.

representing my own cabal, K.L.U.T.Z., i'm going to try and build off all the previous mail i've sent.

now, this is pretty fruitless for the march 5th target, but there's also the potential, feign as i am to think of it, that colbert won't or won't be able to respond on the 5th. it's my thought that a continued mass mailing sustained by as many people as possible will really drive it home.

digest and feedback? thoughts on a secondary approach?

Thanks Prater, it wasn't unexpected, last week she decided she'd had enough of laying tween life and death and asked them to stop treating her. She was old and had outlived her friends and most of her generation of the family. I even got to say goodbye, so as far as it has to happen to everyone, at least she had the best options.

Personally, I wish she would have died two years earlier when her health and independence hadn't yet been destroyed :-/

Weird- exactly how my nana died.

they misdiagnosed a ruptured appendix as a stroke, discovered it a week later. so she stopped fighting, and finally kicked it just after the last of the relatives had made it in.

I heard Stephen utter "23 skidoo" on air tonight. It was early in the program, and following (or just before) a Wiliam F Buckly, Jr. reference, and it was the only 23, so I'm pretty sure it was just a reference to 60's culture.

Next week should really get interesting.

Title: Re: Colbertgasm
Post by: Bebek Sincap Ratatosk on February 29, 2008, 05:04:53 PM
Now, its not the 5th, so 23Skidoo could have been a coincidence... but with so many coincidences either we're spotting quarters or he's in.

Let's see what happens on the fifth, if he makes it more clear that he's in, I'm gonna start sending regular communiques to the Third Outer Head informing him of *insert stuff like Butthash (a secret tool being used by the enemies of the Illuminati)*

Yes? No? Maybe?
Title: Re: Colbertgasm
Post by: Cain on February 29, 2008, 05:11:21 PM
I was thinking we should tell him to denounce the evils of butthash on air, in order to encourage America's youth to stupefy themselves.  In much of the conspiracy literature, including Illuminatus!, drugs were tools of control as well as Illumination.  Plus, its in keeping with his online persona.

We should all decide on the theme before sending out letters though.

possible intro text for the video:

QuoteThe Bavarian Illuminati is a global ultra-conspiracy nearly as old as civilization itself.
On February 29th, 2008, they recruited satirical pundit Stephen Colbert into their ranks.
To test his dedication, they commanded him to utter the code phrase "23 Skidoo" on the air.
Colbert is now in CONCORDANCE with the will of the Illuminati and the Ancient Illuminated Seers of Bavaria.

The nemesis of the Illuminati, the Discordian Society, encourages you to investigate his participation. Watch for Discordian or Illuminati code-words on his broadcasts. He may be relaying coded messages to different sects of the Illuminati, and also using mind-control memes to sap the free will of the General Public. Stay sharp. and Think For Yourself, Shmuck.

Phase 2

Talking to cabalmate and co-conspirator HAL PHILLIPS who is also an NYC Comedy Scene Dude.

Quote from: HAL PHILLIPScheck this out:
http://newyork.ucbtheatre.com/classes/3162

That tells you where Colbert Show writer Peter Gwinn will be, in Manhattan, on the next two Thursday evenings.
Not a public event.  Just a shitty little office/rehearsal space.
Perfect for someone to unobtrusively slip a letter about the Illuminati into his big or something.

Because I can ask my friend Damian to try to slip something to Peter Gwinn.

Some sort of "you have completed the first task, one of our agents has contacted you through an intermediary" kinda deal.
Even if slipping it in his bag requires too much ninja skill, there could just be like, an envelope that says "FOR PETER GWINN" that someone could just put on the floor in the hallway when nobody's looking.  Easy peasy.

You devise something worth slipping to a Colbert Report writer... I will arrange for it to get to him when he least expects it.

brilliant!

as soon as Cram and P3nt4 get in touch with eachother, the intro text can be added, the clip will be bite-sized for general audience and we should spread the thing all over the interspags.

which also kind of helps if it was just coincidence afterall, because Colbert may get wind of us picking up on his "23 skidoo" remark, showing we're sort of serious.

He said "23 Skidoo" on his show a few days ago. Very explicit, if you ask me.

This is all according to plan because
-we didn't have too much control over which codeword he used
-we suggested March 5th but knew that if he was going to say a word, he would fit it in when he got a chance.

As soon as I can find the video, we'll post it.
It was pulled from Youtube for copyright reasons - but WE SHALL PREVAIL.

yes, i witnessed that in the original broadcast, and the edited link.

well seriously, we asked him to say 23 skidoo and he said 23 skidoo. His writers have read illuminatus, so they're aware of its meaning to Discordians - I don't know how much more explicit you can get than that.

We're not going to get any more "confirmation" - we're a conspiracy, after all - mystery, innuendo, and vagueness are our bread and butter.  :p

where to go from here is obvious. we must instruct mr. colbert to do something that not only confirms his allegiance to the AISB, but accomplishes or helps to accomplish an actual goal. we should have him cover some specific grain of newsworthy material that he might not otherwise mention. something that fits with the theme of his show but also brings to light some misdeed of a prominent discordian or discordian sympathizer, coupled with a covert warning from the AISB to the offender.

something like "Newt Gingrich has a crush on Banksy, and when I say crush, I mean he has a pile of depleted uranium rounds with his name on them."

I assumed they would find us. Doesn't matter though. Hopefully if they hang out here, they're hip to the "cause" anyway.

this "Cause" thing though. That's nebulous as fuck.

One self-serving idea would be to encourage him to report on the Discordian Society - we're 50 years old, after all. An anniversary like this is a hell of an excuse for news.

We could suggest that he dismiss it, villify it, condemn it. That sounds like a good "cause" - no?

It's a cool cause - for sure - but it's not our cause.
I'd hate to think the Ancient Illuminated Discordian Society was getting coopted as Anon's personal army...

i was thinking the other-way around; LDD is responsible for anon's movement.

but meh.

If that was the episode with the 2nd Tek Jansen adventures, yah, that was gold. there was also a GASM in the cartoon, as the 'secret base' that Tek had to go to had a big sign that said "OctoGasm".

EDIT:
Cram- Steven told the Colbert Nation to print stickers that said "Peabody Award Winning", and put them on all the Dorito bags in their local supermarket. His guest (who's book was about emergent trends in disorganizations) said that if the Colbert Nation ran with the concept and did something novel (i.e above and beyond what Steven had asked them to do) with the Stickers it would be such a trend.

I wasn't paying too much attention, but Colbert may have made another reference to the forums.

Episode 4044
He's interviewing Trevor Paglen the author of I Could Tell You But Then You Would Have to be Destroyed by Me: Emblems from the Pentagon's Black World
towards the end of the interview, I'm pretty sure Colbert mentions the Illuminati and possibly something golden.

I'll watch the rerun and check this again.

Edit: Checked. No dice. Just says that the masons are a front for the Illuminati.

Namaste

this sounds to me more like, if it's in any way related to us, colbert stealing the show and our ideas and ... what does anything have to do with doritos? he could have at least picked "Golden Delicious" apples or something :)

adding to that, having gone through the trouble of printing stickers that say "PEA BODY AWARD WINNING", i don't think it's a stretch to stick it onto something where it's actually funny.

hell, even if some knucklehead accidentally sticks it onto the wrong thing, it'll be funny.

(unfortunately, 99.99% of the population lacking any sort of basic creativity beyond that, they won't realize that they can pretty much print anything they like onto stickers and stick them onto whatever :) )

..

unless of course, we take the idea and run with it, stealing his show :) see, if we give them (on the colbert fora) the idea to take pics, put them on Flickr and tag them "peabodygasm" or just "colbertgasm", it might go viral in no time.
but, don't do that just yet, because if there's no way to affix the idea of "discordia" or something to it, it's mostly useless to us.
Title: Re: Colbertgasm
Post by: Cramulus on April 09, 2008, 03:05:10 PM
GOOOD call zip.

There are two ways that this project can be "branded" with the Discordia meme-
1) the -gasm suffix totally links back to us... if anybody bothers to look it up
2) we co-opt the cause for our own cause. In the initial blast of flickrgasming, we make sure that the stickers we place and tag are subversive, countercultural, etc. Put the "peabody award winning" stickers on things of extremely low quality: common brands like McDonalds, Walmart, and yes, Doritos.

ETA:
this may be a lot of work, and would be much easier if we had some established presence on the colboards. Cain and I keep meaning to go over there and make friends, but I've been too easily distracted. I think Cain has managed to wave hello successfully.

Title: Re: Colbertgasm
Post by: Triple Zero on April 09, 2008, 04:05:36 PM
branded with the discordian name .. yes

i considered the -gasm suffix but .. well we can at least claim prior art, we've tagged other stuff on flickr, including colbertgasm.

option two is what's going to happen anyway, even if we don't do anything. oh i just looked up "peabody award", didn't know it was a real award, i thought it was funny cause it said "peabody" :)

that leaves one more question, what's this have to do with doritos? they just sponsor Colbert's show or something?

is the interview with that Clay guy online somewhere? (otherwise i'm gonna have to torrent the ep) never mind it will be in before i finish this post.

anyway i dont think just being generally subversive about it because it was on the colbert show, is going to do the trick. i dont think putting stickers on stuff, even subversively, is going to do much for any cause, people will just dismiss it as "that colbert stuff".

no, we gotta grab this chance to bring discordia into the mainstream media. colbert said he would mention it if anything out of the ordinary would happen he would cover it on his show.

- one outlet is the tagname. we could even have them tag it "discordia".

- other outlet could be the actual stickers. replacing that silly coin with the GASM-logo, for example. then, i dunno, print off a whole shitload of those stickers and hand them out and offer to mail them to the [first 50] colbert forumites?

- doing obvious discordian things with the stickers, like i dunno, pasting a lot of them in the shape of a sacred chao. but then we'd have to do that ourselves, and it would fail to leverage the viral aspect we can gain from popularizing the Flickr tagging (btw this is slightly time-critical, because it's not too far-fetched that someone might come up with exactly this idea--without slapping a brand onto it)

didn't one of the memeology articles/summaries/threads we had say something about memes piggybacking on popular memes? cause that's basically what we're going to try and do. i think the gist of it was that if the piggybacking meme gives no inherent advantage to the popular meme, it'll fall off, because memes strive for compactness.

on a sidethought, i'm creating a category and index page for Memetics on the BIP wiki. there's a bunch of good articles and discussions floating around on this topic, but they're all floating around (one of them is in the middle of the memebombs thread, for gods sake :) ) -- quick start made, will put stuff there later: http://www.poee.co.uk/bip/index.php?title=Memetics

uhhhhm

i can possibly come up with more ideas, but i feel like i should hit post now.

Idea:

We should put some publicity up about "Discordian Rallies" of some sort. That way our letters can be centered around the horrible unlawful, sinful, bizarre, believable things which happen at Discordian gatherings. "Dear Abby: last weekend my son went to this Discordian rally thing, an he came back with a tattoo the word "Spag" tattooed on his neck!" Everyone can adlib what happened.

The real interesting thing is going to be that if tons of newspapers cover this thing within a short amount of time, news may emerge on the phenomenon itself. This sort of meta-news will cause reporters to write rather frankly about Discord, raising awareness, etc etc.

To Do:

  • Collect addresses of the ten most popular advice columns.

  • Write up a page on the wiki about AbbyGASM. Explain what it is, how it works, and how to get involved. Make sure the "buzz week" date is posted loud and clear.

  • Push links to this project ALL OVER THE WEB. Hit 23ae, facebook, myspace, lj, poee, eb&G, irreality, ANYWHERE where Discordians hang out.

  • During buzz week, and for a week or two afterwards, we'll hide the wiki page, so that advice columnists doing background research on this thing won't see the project and spoil the prank.

  • Collect any buzz that comes up, and post it to the wiki

UPDATE:

Colbert used the fuckmittens on the show.

He was talking about how Florida and Michigan broke Democrat party rules and so they were being punished by the party, and Michigans response was "changing the shape of their state from a mitten, to a mitten flipping you off"

:fuckmittens:

OH MY GODDESS YES

can someone yank the clip? If someone can grab the relevant video chunk, I'll blog it.

Yay, the bump meant I didn't have to go digging for this thread... thanks Jenne.

So, I've been thinking that ColbertGASM needs to have another push of momentum to turn this 'prank' into a useful OM resource.

First rought Idea: Watch Colbert (troll through the archive @ his site). Note the date of each episode, and then try to find news-media from the _next day_ which has eerie/strange connections to Stephen's show the night before. Blame said connections on the Bavarian Illuminati. Basically, blame Colbert for real world strife because he slipped his Illuminati agents the 'right' codeword the night before.

Any other ideas? Eventually, once we have more Buzz surrounding this (Has anyone seen the "Stephen is a Reptilian Illuminati" thread on the ColBoards?)... we should initiate another round of direct contact.

I screen-capped part of that bit:

(http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/7440/colbertqv1.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

I just read the colbertgasm wikipage, and watched the various show clips with Discordian references.

Has anyone else noticed that in the April 2, 2008 interview with Congressman Sestak, Colbert, at 2 minutes and 32 seconds, the following exchange occurs:

QuoteColbert:  Pennslyvania leads the nation in mushroom production.
Sestak: We have a mushroom farm in my district!
Colbert:  You ever feel like a mushroom?
Sestak:  Yeah, sometimes I feel like my staff keeps me in the dark and feeds me -
Colbert: - shit all the time?
Sestak: Yeah, you said it.
(Colbert and Sestak high five and laugh)
Colbert: I can say it, I don't have to run for public office.

With two lines Colbert gets a politician to acknowledge the SNAFU principle on national television.

Nice.

So what you're saying is that we need to pick 3*OH Colbert's inner circle and Cabinet, and then inform them of the fact that they're now in the Bavarian Illuminati, and to send a copy of their membership papers to his address.... and one to the president... and one to us.

I think that this dude needs to be the Secretary of Inventions for Great Justice: Dean Kamen [http://asap.ap.org/stories/240474.s (http://asap.ap.org/stories/240474.s)]

During the same week, Jon Stewart admits on air during one of the inter-show bumps w/ Colbert that some-one accused him of practicing 'black magick'. This was due to repeated letters sent to the Daily show office inviting Jon to join the "The Erisian Society & Smoking Club", apparently a parallel recruitment effort using some of Wilson's memes (you don't think the Illuminati wouldn't co-opt RAW's work?!?!?! really?!?!).

I just came across this. It's in the category of "weird things related to Colbert", I thought it could potentially be useful as a puzzle piece in the next Colbert Conspiracy relating to Discordia. And if not, it's weird and somewhat interesting:

17 or Bust (http://www.seventeenorbust.com/) is a distributed computing project trying to prove that 78557 is indeed the smallest Sierpinski Number (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sierpinski_number). There were about 17 candidates smaller than 78557, and so far they have ruled out 11 of them.

Ruling out a candidate number from possibly being a Sierpinski number involves computing a few ridiculously large prime numbers, and these numbers are called "Colbert Numbers", indeed named after Stephen Colber:

http://mathworld.wolfram.com/ColbertNumber.html
http://primes.utm.edu/glossary/xpage/ColbertNumber.html
http://www.seventeenorbust.com/ (3rd news item, Wednesday, 15 Apr 2009)

Well.

And that is weird. (http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/3135/iconconfused.gif)

QuoteStephen Colbert joins Illuminati - Preview Edition 00000
Bookmark and Share
By mark steele - Tuesday, April 01, 2008

Dateline New York: (PRAvenueNW) News host Stephen Colbert, of Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report", recently accepted the offer issued him, in response to his request last year, to join the Illuminati.  Pictured above in his guise of "Tek" Jansen, Galaxy Hero, Colbert had issued a public plea last year to the Masters of the Temple to be admitted into this arcane order.

Most recently founded in 1776 in Ingolstadt, Bavaria by Adam Weishaupt, a former Jesuit, the Illuminati is widely believed to be the beings controlling world events.  Some rumors date the Order back to the time of King Kull in Atlantis; others claim more recent origins for the Illuminati.  In 1975, it was revealed by undercover agents Robert J. Shea and Robert Anton Wilson that one Hagbard Celine (pictured above, with Colbert) was one of the 5 Illuminati Primi that ran the world.

Though generally believed to have vanished into space in the late 1990's Hagbard Celine has been sighted in numerous places around the world since last March, including many sightings on the Internet.  Rumors are that this is an imposter, not the original HC himself, though this has yet to be confirmed or denied.

Sources state that "Celine's" branch of the Illuminati attempted to contact Colbert shortly after the first plea was broadcast, but it is unknown whether or not this transmission was ever received.  Some time later, a pair of itinerant Discordians, worshippers of the Greek Goddess Eris, or Discord, attempted to invite Colbert into their own versions of the Illuminati, in a joint effort that involved unknown numbers of people in a letter writing campaign that appears to have borne fruit.  Asking for a single word answer that would indicate the acceptance or denial of the offer, on March 5th, the target date, Colbert opened his show with the words, "The answer, my friend, is blowin'" -- which expert analysis (see article below) assures us is a definitive "Yes", that Stephen Colbert is indeed now in The Illuminati.  It is unknown whether he has, to date, accepted any other Illuminati group's offers to join.

Rumors indicate that this faux "Celine", who also goes by the name of Icarus!, is attempting to get Colbert to "Go Public" with the information in a broadcast ceremony, planned for May 1, the 232nd anniversary of Weishaupt's founding (or reviving) of the Illuminati.  Rumors indicate that attempts are being made to gain the Skull of Geronimo from the Skull and Bones Society (alleged to have been founded by the Illuminati) for the initiation.  This news team has not yet discovered whether any of this has any connection to Colbert's plans to visit Philadelphia.

The CIN Newz Team has given this reporter the assignment of following this news, and I promise I will spare no efforts in my attempts to fu—err, cover Colbert's dangerous journey through Chapel Perilous.

Stephany T. Dorn, CIN NEWZ!

EDITORIAL

Craig Jameson III, Editor

Welcome to the first, preview edition, of the CIN Newz!  The result of a long hard, struggle against the Greyfaces (fnord) in our midst, we will attempt to bring you, in every issue, the Newz! not fit to print in the Mainstream Press (fnord), the tale of the struggles of the little people, and our own sucking up to the Media Moguls (fnord) who might be able to give us money for this dubious enterprise.  As my Uncle Mel, our publisher, used to say, "Me, Worry?  HA!"

Every issue we will attempt to bring you the best our team of Crack Reporters (fnord) can find (or make up) about the events in YOUR world(fnord)!  Can you hear me now(fnord)?  If we DON'T have a spy in your neighborhood yet, we soon WILL!(fnord) Our goal is "A bug in every bathroom, and two or three in the bedroom!(fnord)  You KNOW what our guys like to hear!

Oh, sure, some of you may believe that these are just the mad ravings of a delusional middle-aged maniac with too much time on his hands, but I ASSURE you this is not true – I do NOT have too much time on my hands!  Stephanie, Ben Pinto, and the other staff members here assure me that they are doing everything in their power to ASSURE that we have compete coverage of the events that matter most!  Stephanie is even trying to seduc— err, track down the mysterious Avery C. Gordon (who comes from a nice family by the way – I had lunch with Barbara just the other day) in her attempts to completely cover the Colbert beat.  (Is there anything else going on in New York that really matters these days?)

Now it's up to you – what DO you want to see in these pages?  Our graphics department is working overtime these days to give you illustrations that suit the admittedly long-winded text you're reading, so we want to make sure you LIKE what you're seeing – drop me a line at the above link, and let me know!  As one of my great-grandfathers said to another, "It's the SCIENTIFIC detecting of facts and using them to back up the Truthiness of your data that really counts!"

Opinion Column

By Ben F. Kawl, Opinion Editor

When asked to do this column originally by Assistant Editor Pearl S. White, I demurred – I have long been a political non-Euclidian, disdaining the dichotomy of right and left wing used by the pundits in this country to the point that they seem to have lost all meaning.  But, having been forced by circumstances lately to watch the ramblings by my counterpart on Headline News, I realized that there are many issues to be addressed today that I may be able to wag the finger if I can borrow the phrase) toward, and possibly beyond, to some sort of potential resolution.

In particular, I note a great deal of attention given lately to the issues of:

Global Warming(fnord) and WATER

Now, since Ye Ed and the Publisher are breathing down my neck to get this out by Apr 1, I suppose I better produce... something about sending this to opinion columns all over the country?  Yeah, NO pressure...

Recently, I've seen some comments that some scientists don't believe in Global Warming, and have the evidence.  Unfortunately, the Rodeo clown that is having these people in to say this is NOT getting the data from them.  I, for one, want to hear it – it make no sense to have people on a show claiming something, and then not having the evidence to back up their statement.  It's called a BLIND ASSERTION, and while it may be a favorite technique of Discordian Evangelists, I wouldn't recommend it for serious scientific study.

Another show (supposedly a comedy, but NO ONE in the audience laughed at this) had a segment on with an author on that claimed one of the major problems with global Warming was going to be DROUGHT, and that the signs of it could already be seen in some parts of the world.  It makes sense – the world heats up, the ice caps melt, and the water stays in the air rather than falling as rain.  Flooding on the coast, parching on the other parts of the continents.  AND – WHAT TO DO!?!

There's a major source of fresh water that sits in the middle of the North American Continent.  It's called the Great Lakes.  They are called Great for a reason – they are VERY large, nearly of the status of inland seas.  In fact, G-Dub seems to have taken them for such once, as he was quoted as talking about the Canadians being overseas – and these lakes happen to surround the CIN Newz! HQ on 3 sides.

In recent years these lake levels have been dropping, due to a shortage of snow and mild winters.  Most of the snow in Michigan comes from what is called lake effect snow – the water evaporates from Lake Michigan and flows back into it and the other Great Lakes through the local river basin.  Due to the recent climate changes and other factors, the level in Lake Michigan has been dropping.

This year, through the grace of God, Gaia, or random chance, the levels have been brought back up.  Water from the Gulf of Mexico (remember Katrina?) has come up here due to weather patterns, and replenished the water supply.  This water is essential to the well being of us Northern Barbarians (we are NOT Yankees, thank you very much...) living here, not only for such economic items as tourism, swimming and boating but for bathing, drinking, and other essential life functions.  Several times in recent years, plans have been suggested for the waters here to be used to replenish drought areas along the Mississippi, in Arizona, and in other places.

Well, back off, people, that's OUR water – if you want it, come up here, and live and invest in the area!

We've had the interesting experience in recent years of certain Republican politicians voting en masse against their party line because the came from here, and know that what the Party planned was NOT good for their area.  I commend these folks for having the courage to stand up to the others – even if I am doing it in fine print...

Unfortunately, there's STILL a big leak in the system, and has been for about 100 years.  No, I'm not referring to the St. Laurence Seaway (the lock system there works effectively to help hold the waters in), or the Niagara Falls system (that was formed by nature, and works rather well), I'm referring to the Sanitary and Ship Canal, which totally reversed the flow of the Chicago River, sending the waters down the Mississippi River rather than into Lake Michigan.  The site sets on the region where the two water basins divide.

Now the reasons why it was originally made were good – there was waste backing up into Chicago, and being dumped into Lake Michigan, where the water around the city stagnated.  No wants their crap in their streets, and in the slowly flowing waters of the lake, it quickly became a health problem.  Cholera and other diseases caused the environment in Chicago at the end of the 19th century to be less than pleasant.  The rerouting also had the additional benefit of allowing ship trade down the Mississippi with Chicago, so everyone thought this was all great.  So now we have the situation where the citizens in some parts of Chicago and its suburbs are drinking the water from Lake Michigan, and flushing it down the Mississippi.  (SHAME ON YOU, COOK COUNTY!)

Now, what's on the other end of the Mississippi?  A (now) little place called New Orleans.  A place that's needed to build levies to keep the waters at bay, and needs desperately to replant the trees to slow down the speed of the Hurricane winds the NEXT time something of the magnitude of Katrina hits.  But was Katrina the ONLY problem here?

These levies, according to multiple reports from the Army Corps of Engineers and other examiners have not been equipped to handle the Mississippi water supply for quite some time.  Their recent failure was a combination of the reports being ignored, the engineers not getting the resources that they needed to fix the problem, and TOO MUCH WATER for structures built originally centuries ago to cope with.  Is it possible that the extra water that's been headed down the river for the last 100 years helped CONTRIBUTE to the deterioration of the levies?  I say YES!  I see patterns where the DO exist!

Can I PROVE this?  No – I don't' have the resources to do so, or to examine the data for the last 150 years on water levels in the Mississippi, and to correlate them with the structural integrity of the levies and the building project in Chicago.  But the data DOES exist, and can be analyzed.  Doesn't it make more sense to do it NOW before another tragedy of this magnitude hits?  And, in any case, do we really NEED to be giving this vital portion of our Nation's fresh water supply to the Gulf of Mexico?  It gets plenty from the Atlantic – it doesn't need ours too!

Some studies indicate that around 40% of our Nation's population (if one includes those in all the diversion zones, such as Chicago) lives in the Great Lakes Water Basin – nearly half!  And, if you figure that there are only 3 other Geographical regions (the middle to southern Atlantic Coast, the South, and the West) could only get an AVERAGE OF 20% EACH for the rest of the Nation's population (not COUNTING the Canadians that also live in the Great Lakes Basin – that boosts the population count to 40 million people), the facts are obvious:  Despite the generally accepted statistics showing population centers densest around New York City, DFW in Texas, and LaLaLand, CA (many of whom ARE and CONTINUE to be my Friends), WE OUTNUMBER YOU!  Keeping this National Treasure of Precious Earth Fluid intact and inviolate for the future of our grandkids, and those who choose to come here when the droughts come, is ESSENTIAL for the survival of our species!  And remember, event though partially discredited in the wake of the Oklahoma City Bombing, the Michigan Militia has NEVER truly gone away... and let's not even THINK about what the Canucks might do if they decided to deal with this directly...

So, since the waste management systems have greatly increased in the last 108 years, and we now have the ability to put a stop to this wasteful practice, I can say, with al sincerity, that it's time to:

PUT A PLUG IN IT, CHICAGO: NEW ORLEANS DOESN'T NEED YOUR CRAP!

Next issue – the rant continues, only this time about the Dust Bowl...

What kind of monster IS Hilary Clinton?

FIRST IN A SERIES!  Collect them all!

Heh. My pops got this Roku thing which lets you watch Hulu (and other things) on your television. Last week I spent a day watching an entire two weeks of The Colbert Report, and I noticed the ticker at the bottom with the names. I just remember thinking to myself that if I watched the ticker long enough, I'd start seeing some spags names fly by. I didn't catch any myself, but I'm glad you screen capped at least one Discordian.

Colbert went on a Law of 5s rant last night. Literally! In Herman Cain's autobiography, he devotes a chapter to the recurring "45s" in his life. Colbert explained how the number 45 is related to the number 23, like that Jim Carrey movie, and that 5s occur all over the place. He concluded by saying it's all a democrat conspiracy.

http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/405273/january-05-2012/indecision-2012---fun-rick-santorum

(skip to 1:40 for the gesture)

Aside from the obvious 23, displayed on the FIFTH of the month, the particular hand signs are the peace sign with his (crossed) left hand ("V", or 5), and a Shocker sign with his right hand.

Colbert SuperPAC sent this out yesterday:

Quote

Dear Super PAC Super Members,

Hi there. I'm Jon. It looks like I'm running this thing now. All the details are in the press release below. Quick question: does anybody know where the key to the Super PAC bathroom is?

Thanks,

Jon Stewart
President Pro Tem
Americans For A Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow

FOR REALLY IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Under New Management!

BASIC CABLE, USA – Americans For A Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow, an FEC registered Super PAC, today announced the addition of Jon Stewart to its executive board (along with the subtraction of Stephen Colbert).

With this change the group, which had been known colloquially as Colbert Super PAC, can now be referred to as The Definitely Not Coordinating With Stephen Colbert Super PAC. They have already begun updating all of their letterhead with sharpie.

"I am excited to take the reins of this completely independent organization, and begin to air ads in South Carolina," said New President and Noncommunication Director Jon Stewart. "But I want to be clear: Stephen and I have in no way have worked out a series of morse-code blinks to convey information with each other on our respective shows."

Colbert is currently exploring a run for President of the United States of South Carolina. Because of this, he cannot be associated with any Super PACs, although he has asked Americans For A Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow to forward any periodicals of an "adult nature." *

Americans A Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow is an independent, expenditure-only committee founded by Stephen Colbert in the wake of the Supreme Court's Citizens United ruling, then handed down to Jon Stewart like a pair of old dungarees.

I think This should go here. Hasn't there been a lot of letterhead requests lately?

I think we charge Colbert with using Last Train to Transcentral as his official campaign song:

most recent Super Pac email:

Dear Super PAC Super Voters,

Hey, it's Jon. It feels like only a week ago that we started this crazy journey to convince Stephen Colbert to run for President of the United States of South Carolina. But in fact it was a week and two days. Time flies when you're not coordinating!

Today is the South Carolina Republican Primary, so I just wanted to remind you to make your voice heard in the form of Stephen Colbert's voice in the form of Herman Cain's voice. Do your patriotic duty and vote for a man that's no longer running!

I'll see you at The Definitely Not Coordinating With Stephen Colbert Super PAC victory party. We have a lot of money, so we splurged on name-brand cola!

Jon Stewart
President For Life For Now
The Definitely Not Coordinating With Stephen Colbert Super PAC

PS - Just a reminder, our Super PAC is not coordinating with Stephen Colbert, or Herman Cain, or any of the candidates. Although, full disclosure: I once brushed up against Mitt Romney at the 2008 Republican Convention. His skin was cold and rubbery, like a damp rain slicker.

This, after a barrage of Ads (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jlcctxBHTs) in South Carolina, the most recent of which "attacks" Colbert: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igZMahgu2_0&feature=related

I used to think this guy was ok...like Dave Letterman.
But then he started pushing his "Vax-Scene" which I originally thought was a mock.
BUT he was triple-dosed with the Clot-Shot. So obviously he was supporting it...in a "fun" way.
Supporting a fake vaccine that kills humans = ++ungood

I hereby revoke his status within Discordia.

Oh, man. I'm gonna give you one warning you don't deserve.

We are not your kind. You need to run. You need to run like your ass is on fire and the feral dogs of the neighborhood smell dinner. You need to proactively disable your access to this site permanently. For your own good.

Make your next post a flounce. Otherwise you might just become someone's hobby, you plague rat motherfucker.

Given the vast authorities the members of our faithlessness possess, I don't doubt for a heartbeat that you can do that.

That being said, I have to ask, what exactly was Colbert's former status within Discordia anyway? (I'm asking because I've been thinking about giving myself a promotion within our Holy Order, and I feel I should know that kind of stuff before I just go ahead and do it.)
