Title: Music Discussion (fair warning): Your Top 10 albums.
Post by: AFK on December 11, 2009, 08:45:19 PM
Okay, so the last couple of posts in the Jazz thread got me curious.  And fuck it, this IS Apple Talk.

Give me your top 10 albums.  I'm curious to sample the musical tastes of the current crop of pd.com denizens.  Maybe we can turn each other on to some new music we haven't heard before. So go for it.  (if you can't think of 10, do top 5, or top 7, or something.  Just don't go over 10)

Here's mine:

10 - Queensryche-Operation: Mindcrime
9 - Mike Oldfield-Songs of Distant Earth
8 - Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
7 - Sentenced - The Cold White Light
6 - My Dying Bride - Turn Loose the Swans
5 - Anathema - Serenades
4 - Savatage - Gutter Ballet
3 - Faith No More - Angel Dust
2 - Anathema - Judgement
1 - My Dying Bride - The Dreadful Hours

Have at it!

1 is best, 10 is worst?

Yes,  typical countdown fashion.  1 is your favorite, 10 is your 10th favorite.

i now realize i had no real reason to ask that, because i can't possibly decide on my top favorite number one album of all time, but here are the first 10 i thought of, in the order i thought of them:

Fantomas - Director's Cut
Melvins - Stoner Witch (so hard to decide between this and Stag)
Clutch - Blast Tyrant
Hank Williams III - Straight to Hell
Primus - Sailing the Seas of Cheese
Muddy & the Wolf - (blues compilation featuring Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf)
20 Bluegrass Instrumentals - (Bluegrass Compilation)
Tomahawk - Anonymous (possibly only here cuz i just got it a couple weeks ago)
Kepone - Ugly Dance
The Jesus Lizard - Lash (so hard to choose between this one, Liar and Down)

i don't think i can ever commit to a static top ten list.  so many greats not mentioned . . .

fuck it, honorable mention:  Reverend Horton Heat - Holy Roller

1.  Elliott Smith - Either/Or
I really need to find these two.

I keep giving More Adventurous a shot but I can't get into it.  My sister didn't dig The Execution as much as I did either.  The end of the album is much better with A Better Son/Daughter and With Arms Outstretched.  Every song where Jenny Lewis does not sing is pretty awful.

I love Wolf Parade, and it being and indie rock supergroup I find that amazing because it has all the makings of something I would hate.  Apologies is their debut, and it's strong, but the follow up At Mount Zoomer is also very very good.

Elliott Smith is my favorite.  Choosing which album to put on the list was tough, and I couldn't give him two spots because I love variety.

I'm pretty boring and it should surprise no one.

1: Yes - Relayer
2: Pink Floyd - Animals
3: Tool - Aenima
4: The Prodigy - Music for the Jilted Generation
5: Assemblage 23 - Addendum
6: Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
7: Tool - Opiate
8: Stabbing Westward - Darkest Days (Remember them? Lol.)
9: System of a Down - Mezmerize
10: Ra - Duality

That was harder than I thought.

Along with something to represent Aphex Twin, perhaps Come to Daddy.

So I will edit my original list.
Thanks Slanket.

top 10 albums is harder than bands. Limiting myself to only one album per band, here's the best list I could come up with right now, in no particular order:

KMFDM - Nihil
AFI - The Art of Drowning
Suicidal Tendencies - Lights, Camera, Revolution
Therapy? - Troublegum
Pantera - Far Beyond Driven
Dr. Dre - The Chronic
Outkast - ATLiens
In Flames - Whoracle
Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley
Misfits - Walk Among Us
Corrosion of Conformity - Deliverance

OK, so that's 11 but I could just as easilyhave  gone to 20, or 50 , or 100.

Pink Floyd - The Wall
Modest Mouse - The Lonesome Crowded West
Saul Williams - Amethyst Rock Star

Sigur Ros - Takk

Yes really, for really real. CoB is one band I find has consistently improved as time goes on. Though I admit it was pretty much just a coin toss between that and Hatebreeder.

this was very hard, especially cause it's per album, I'd rather mixed and matched some by the same artist :)

I probably missed some obvious choices, also I restricted myself to just one album per artist otherwise there would have been more aphex twin and shpongle.

1 chemical brothers - exit planet dust
2 shpongle - tales of the inexpressible
3 aphex twin - I care because you do
4 the prodigy - music for the jilted generation
5 Junkie XL - Saturday Teenage Kick
6 younger brother - the last days of gravity
7 carbon based lifeforms - hydroponic garden
8 Squarepusher - Hard Normal Daddy
9 kraftwerk - the mix
10 Pleiadians - I.F.O.

stuff that didn't make my top10 but was in the initial selection, sort of also in the order of good to slightly less good:
aphex twin - Selected Ambient Works II/shpongle - are you shpongled?/Eboman - Donuts with Buddah EP/KMFDM - MDFMK/Spawn OST/Kruder & Dorfmeister - The K&D Sessions/Daft Punk - Homework/autechre - incunabula/OTT - Blumenkraft/aphex twin - drukqs/aphex twin - Richard D James Album/shpongle - nothing lasts/Hallucinogen - Twisted/Ugress - Resound/Les Rythmes Digitales - Darkdancer

In no particular order, and missing out, even in my opinion, much more worthy artists and albums...

Bad Religion - Against the Grain
'Operation Rescue' in particular is a kick ass tune. Most played track in my media library by far.

Black Sabbath - Master of Reality
:) My dad played Ozzy Osbourne era Black Sabbath a LOT when I was a young'un. It kinda stuck.

Radiohead - Pablo Honey
'Creep' and 'Anyone Can Play Guitar' were like my god damn theme tunes for ages after this album came out.

Tom Waits - Rain Dogs
Nothing need be said about this. Nothing at all.

Nofx - White Trash, Two Heebs and a Bean
I fell in love with 'Soul Doubt', really, but the rest of the album is awesome too.

Stereophonics - Word Gets Around
This album mostly reminds me of getting the fuck out of Aberdeen and moving to Edinburgh, nice (for Scotland) summer weather, and being mildly stoned most of the time.

Modest Mouse - Lonesome Crowded West
Actually only downloaded this after falling in love with 'Doin' The Cockroach' on the Verwirrung compilation, then immediately fell in love with every single track on it, a rare thing for me - there's usually at least ONE track I hate.

John Lennon - Imagine
What? No YOU shut up! Only song I don't like is 'I Don't Wanna be a Soldier Mama', the rest are awesome for one reason or another even if I don't particularly agree with the sentiment.

The Offspring - Ixnay on the Hombre
One of THE great punk albums IMO, even if it is The Offspring. People would probably be more likely to give kudos to Smash instead, but I always preferred this one.

Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP
Only fairly recently found any kind of appreciation at all for Eminems work. Clever, funny, lyrics. Also, this album reminds me of a blind date I went on years back when I was much less likely to listen to anything like this. The girl just would NOT shut up about Eminem. I can laugh about it now...

Seems to me that most of the people who hate on eminem are people who like serious rap. Since I got moar time for freeform fucking jazz than I do for most of that shit I tend to discount their opinions pretty readily :lulz:

Also prefered the slim shady lp to the second one (but only just)

Troof. I think I probably prefer the Slim Shady LP too, but I haven't heard it in forever as I don't have it. I do have the Marshall Mathers LP though, so it got the nod.

I flicked through my Last.fm (http://www.last.fm/user/BDSimpleton) to decide on this rough list of some of my favourite albums, at the moment.

In no particular order:

She & Him - Volume One
Lady GaGa - The Fame Monster
Death Cab For Cutie - Transatlanticism (So hard to pick an album, but I guess this one)
The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead
Cansei de Ser Sexy - Cansei de Ser Sexy
edIT - Certified Air Raid Material
Deadmau5 - For Lack Of A Better Name
Immortal Technique - Revolutionary, Vol. 1
Justice - Cross
Pomplamoose - VideoSongs

I could go on for ages, but these are kinda the first I thought of.

In no real order:

Cake - Fashion Nugget (Although most of their albums are pretty awesome)
The Classic Crime - The Silver Cord (Although Albatross does have my favorite song by them "Warrior Poet")
Damiera - Quiet Mouth Loud Hands
The Dandy Warhols - Welcome to the Monkey House
Fair to Midland - Fables from a Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times is True
Flobots - Fight With Tools
Harvey Danger - King James Version
Muse - Absolution
Nine Inch Nails - Year Zero or Pretty Hate Machine, can't decide
Our Lady Peace - Spiritual Machines or Naveed, although all of them have been great

Honorable Mentions: Semisonic - Feeling Strangely Fine and Something for Kate - The Official Fiction

Hmm, just a rough list, because I don't have my entire music library with me at the moment. Also, in no particular order:

Mish Mash - Regurgitator
My first album of theirs, and my favourite still. Plus the fact that they wrote the entire album in a plastic bubble in the middle of Melbourne is pretty cool.

Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
Only five tracks, but every single one is brilliant, and it fits together really well.

Cowboy Bebop Soundtrack - The Seatbelts
Very eclectic, and one of the few purely instrumental albums that I can listen to for ages and not get bored.

Alive 2007 - Daft Punk
Some of the tracks aren't as great after being mixed, but it has a great mix of their songs, and is brilliant for dancing to.

Fire - Electric Six
Electric six is great, and unfortunately they've only gone downhill since Fire, but that's not hard seeing how great this album is.

Hard Road Restrung - Hilltop Hoods
One of my favourite hip hop groups being joined by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, the subtleties of the orchestra combined with their great rhymes makes this a really cool album. Plus the ending to the track Stopping All Stations on this album is much better than the original.

Live on Earth - The Cat Empire
Takes the best Cat Empire songs, from the best live recordings of them, and throws it together brilliantly. It helps that The Cat Empire is one of those bands that aree much better live than in the studio.

Sound of Silver - LCD Soundsytem
Unfortunately the first track on this album is it's weakest, but the rest are really fine, and it ends superbly.

I think that's eight, that seems like enough.

Agreed, though I did enjoy Senor Smoke quite a bit. At a school function I popped in my copy into the Stereo there and played Vibrator at top volume. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V62b3W6MuxE

Ok, this one is incredibly hard for me, and I'm sure that as soon as I hit "post", I'll be thinking of 20 more bands that should make it on the list.  So, the first 10 try to hit as many kinds of music as it can.  The rest of the albums are ones that should be included or mentioned.

The Stooges - Funhouse
The Minutemen - Double Nickles on the Dime
Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold us Back
Brian Eno - Taking Tiger Mountain (by Strategy) [this just narrowly edged out "Here Come The Warm Jets"]
Can - Tago Mago
Captain Beefheart - Mirror Man
Einsturzende Neubauten - Haus der Luge
Kraftwerk - The Man Machine
Tom Waits - Frank's Wild Years
Spiritualized - Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating In Space

Slint - Spiderland
The Fall - This Nation's Saving Grace
Gang of Four - Entertainment
Lounge Lizards - Voice of Chunk
PiL - Album
Squirrel Bait - Squirrel Bait
Pink Floyd - Animals
Dinosaur Jr - You're Living All Over Me
Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
Nomeansno - Sex Mad/You Kill Me
Birthday Party - Prayers on Fire
Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile
Cop Shoot Cop - Release
Bad Brains - Rock for Light
Fear - The Record

Yes yes yes. This is my favorite album from my favorite band(though I don't know if it's my favorite album ever). And I've said the exact same thing before about this album, there is no song I hate or even dislike, it's all gold.

And yeah Doin' the Cockroach is tied with Tiny Cities Made of Ashes for my favorite song of theirs to hear live. And my girlfriend think I'm crazy because I love the part "you're walking down the street, your face, your lips, your hips, your eyes they meet, you're not hungry though", and I can't even start to explain why, I have no idea.

ETA: and the drumming on this album is fully exceptional. I've only ever really payed attention to the drumming on two albums in my life, this and Tool's Lateralus.

other Eno albums I need to check, then. Even though I love ambient, I still can't get myself to liking his stuff...

QuoteKraftwerk - The Man Machine

It was a hard choice between this one and The Mix ... on the one hand this is the classic oldskool Kraftwerk sound, but I went for The Mix because I"m just much more likely to play that album when I want to enjoy some Kraftwerk.

And 000, those two albums are part of his Glam Rock "Idiot Energy" phase.  A few tracks point to his ambient stuff later, but a good chuck of them are like Roxy Music, but a lot weirder.

May I also suggest 801, a band that lasted for about 3 live shows, containing Brian Eno and Phil Manzarez (or however you spell it). They essentially did covers of Eno and Roxy Music songs. Worth listening to IMO.

An album that for me was just on the outside looking in was the Parallels album by Fates Warning.  A prog-metal band that actually knows how to show off their quirky time signatures and technical prowess but also write and compose memorable songs with some heart to them.  Parallels was certainly one of their lighter albums sound-wise, but I think they were able to accomplish something similar to what Pink Floyd accomplished on Dark Side of the Moon.  Which was to have this moody undercurrent that just tied the whole thing together.

Oh, and also, Mark Zonder is a percussion god.  Mike Portnoy has nothing on him.

Faith No More's finest album.

I would go so far as to say one of the finest rock albums ever.  What's amazing about that album is how they can do a country-western style crooning song like "RV" and a sludgy, Sabbathy metal song like "Jizzlober" and be 100% convincing with both.  They're all pretty much musical geniuses in my boat, but only really excel when they are all together.

I certainly agree that it is a very good album.  Hell, it's better than 98% of what was being put out by rock bands at the time.  I feel Angel Dust is a more complete album however.  I feel like King for a Day has 2 or 3 filler songs.  They're okay, but not really captivating.  On Angel Dust the only song that comes close to filler status for me is "A Small Victory".  Also, King for a Day was rather weak on keyboards and from what I've read it was one of the albums that had the least amount of input from Roddy Bottum.  To me, he is really the glue for that band.  You take the keys away, and you still have some interesting rock and roll, but, it just doesn't have that extra je ne sais quois the other stuff has.

Also, also, I'm a big Jim Martin fan. Huge mistake kicking him out of the band.  I'm sure he was an insufferable prick, but, fuck, so is Mike Patton.

you know, before you posted that and knowing next to nothing about you, I'd have bet a whole lot of money that you were a Jesus Lizard fan.

also, props for Big Black (that's one that could make my list on any given day) and Skinny Puppy (though I always preferred Rabies).

Yeah, I also like stuff like Paul McCartney (Ram is one of the BEST EVER, I cant believe I forgot that one), and Curtis Mayfield(Superfly is the black Sgt. Peppers).  Too much to list...  Just too much...

Forgot about Polvo - Cor crane secret...  Fucking another great album...
