QuoteNew Times readers who remember our February 2008 article on the infamous checkpoint know the answer: Because of a disputed -- but still potent -- U.S. Supreme Court ruling.

As the article states, the Border Patrol was granted an exception to normal Fourth Amendment procedures, allowing the agency to set up checkpoints with trained dogs on any road within 100 miles of the international border. Funding for drug-and-human-sniffing dogs increased after the 9/11 attacks, resulting in thousands of recreational pot users -- and few criminals or illegal immigrants -- getting busted at the Interstate 8 checkpoint.

Reading through that, they are still a number of unanswered questions, but I imagine that there was a certain amount of excessive force used.

No doubt we'll be hearing more about this after his hearing.

Since when have their been exceptions to the amendments?!

wait, let me rephrase that...

Since when have their openly been exceptions to the amendments?

Think about the dictionary definition of the word "ammendment" then tell me you never saw this coming.

If you can manage that then you're a true amurikan  :lulz:

Wonder how many people have had this or worse happen to them who didn't have the American Baptist Association to act as a press secretary???

I just find it odd that the first we hear of this kind of thing just happens to happen to a Baptist minister.

I'm not going to say the poor bastard deserved it, but he had it coming.  Interfering with underpaid border partrol officers because you want to be a smarty pants= bad day.  Just open your fucking trunk and be on your way.

Also if you read the comments below you can see the guy never even went to seminary and just started a church to hear himself be homophobic and intolerant. I'm sure he just wanted to hear himself talk about his fourth amendment rights too- until he got tazed.

Like his intolerance or not if this all turns out to be the real deal he at least stood up for his rights. There are still many of who would prefer to die on our feet instead of living on our knees.

I wonder, did the Good Pastor support the PATRIOT Act?  Did he condone what went on at Gitmo and Abu Graib as "a necessary evil"?  I don't know the guy, but I do know Baptists.  Well, if he didn't understand Verthaine's Principle* before, he understands now.

I need to go and get me an animal pelt to blend in with what will soon be the natives.

Perhaps a Tory politicians pelt, a catchy number with lots of grease and oils for weatherproofing.

Spiny, I can appreciate what you're doing here. Believe me, I can think of quite a few places on the Internet where people really need to be reminded of who they are, and PDCOM has got to be in top five or six hundred.

But your approach is all wrong. First of all, what you're really trying to do is troll, but you only seem to be half aware of that, so you keep switching between half-assed troll and dickish poster. Normally people would hate that because it would make you inconsistent and unpredictable, but around here we hate that because we've seen it so many times that we can assume with greater than 70% accuracy what the next thing you're going to say will be.

Secondly, you're not even saying anything remotely interesting while being a douchebag, you're just basically coming on with all this "I know you are but what am I?" crap, and that shit was old before PeeWee Herman wore it out.

Thirdly, you don't stand for anything except trying to make waves. But the waves you're making are so dreadfully underpowered I could ice skate on them.

If you're really going for the glory here and trying to change things, you're going to have to put in a little more effort than that. As it is, you will probably drop out of the board by your 200th post and never come back, and nobody will be glad you're gone because nobody will even remember you were here to begin with.

As it is, you will probably drop out of the board by your 200th post and never come back, and nobody will be glad you're gone because nobody will even remember you were here to begin with.

You've got me all wrong man.  I don't care about changing anying about this forum or trolling it or anything of the sort.  What I don't appreciate is when people say things on a public internet forum that they wouldn't say in person.  It grates on me, you know?

Anyway, I doubt I'll make it to 200 posts either, but we'll see what happens *yawn*.

Why do you assume I wouldn't say it to you in person? Because I most assuredly would.

Now let me explain something and feel free to ask around. I wasn't flaming you. I wasn't dogpiling you. I wasn't even being mean. Every time I hear what you said repeated by people it reminds me our freedoms are a fleeting thing and the kind of attitude you propose hastens the end. By your insistence to avoid having to actually do anything to keep your personal freedoms you are encouraging the mindset among certain authority figures that we will do nothing until it is far too late to do anything. I'll even bet you have a ribbon on your car about supporting our troops. That way you have someone to hide behind. To avoid a little conflict you are quite willing to forfeit your freedom and thus you endanger the rest of us.

Hence you are a cabbage.

And if I ever do decide to flame/dogpile/attack you, trust me you will be perfectly aware of it. On the internet or IRL.

History has shown those who just keep their heads down and try not to come to the attention of anyone with any forms of power fare really well under conditions of increasing infringements of liberty.

No, really.

wait, let me rephrase that...

Since when have their openly been exceptions to the amendments?

Since 1994/1995.

which particular one are you talking about there?

Clinton's Crime Bill.   :)

You don't ask for rights.  "Rights" that are given can be taken away, and are thus mere privilege.  Rights are SEIZED, and then ASSUMED.

And sometimes, you have to make a motherfucker bounce in the process.

i know better than to post pre coffee but some times do it anyway.
when i said "ask for" i was thinking of being polite in how you approach talking to an officer about your rights. "ask about" might have been a better way to put it. you can ask about rights you have and want respected as a way of avoiding a confrontational demeanor..

Bullshit. I shouldn't have to suck up to some asshole to keep my rights when the asshole was supposed to be one of the ones enforcing my right in the first place. A polite denial for illegal search based on the 4th amendment should have been the end of the conversation.

good for you , next time you read  a situation and spot an asshole in a uniform, don't use your understanding of how to interact with people to get the results you want, just "politely demand" what you want even if you know he is an asshole in a bad mood, i am sure it will work out fine

I agree with Fomenter that being an asshole right off the bat rarely helps.  Now, if you tried polite and it didn't work, some righteous indignation can be good, especially if it overrides the "respect to authority" wiring we all have.

But if you start off by being a dick, you may be in the right, but it doesn't incline the officer in question to treat you fairly and, if it gets in the press, you end up looking like a petulant child.  Maybe I just take it for granted that people in positions of authority will try and bend or break the rules, but it doesn't annoy me until the moment the act has actually happened, not beforehand.  If I can talk them around it, all good.  If not, and they do cross the line, then its a good time to start getting angry.

For instance, I was stopped by anti-terrorism police in London.  People like me (ie; those who have studied terrorism) are often a favourite target of such police.  If we kick up a fuss, its almost certain we will have "terrorist literature" on our computers and they can drop us into solitary confinement for a month if they want, without charge while they "investigate".  For a foreigner, its even worse.  Deportation rules are highly relaxed, and you don't have to deported to your country of origin.

So getting angry before any of those things was not an option.  I quietly filled in the form with as many useless, within-the-norm stats as possible, handed it back and then told her I did not appreciate being stopped while going about my lawful business, nor having my details recorded, and that I would be informing my MP of such actions, as well as possible discussion with the IPCC about the practice.  I then requested her badge number and went on my way.  The IPCC are, of course, useless, but my MP is a Tory, and he is part of the (current) fake libertarian bandwagon that is going on in Westminster.  Plus he generally loves pissing off Labour and, being the MP around here offers little in the way of things to hurt them with.  And having her personal badge number, it was entirely possible a shitstorm would come back on her, personally.  The Met love hanging out scapegoats when opinion go against them.

Anger at the wrong time is just an excuse for people to dismiss you as irrational and help justify (in a perverted way) what happens to you.  Keeping cool, assessing the situation logically then striking back in unexpected ways is much better.

from what ive seen the best course of action is knowing the law to the letter, being calm and polite.
Then when you know they are breaking the law, tell them.  start to rant a bit in a calm polite manner.  Because when you are right, you're right...  the offender will know it, which will cause them to start second guessing their self, if in fact they don't already know they are a douche bag...

You voice your opinion, and then someone disagrees, and then you disagree back, and then someone insults you, so you insult back, then the other basement dwelling sock fuckers jump in and gang up, ect. ect.

I'm seeing a pattern here.

Quit your fucking whining, you goddamn shrieking little girl.

Thanks.

You're welcome.

You know what's really pathetic?  I've been wasting time here for almost a month and I feel like an asshole.  You have almost 40,000 posts.

Have fun circle jerking each other in the aether, void of any real human contact.

Also, you should head upstairs soon, I think your mom's making meatloaf.

:fuckmittens:

You know what should really scare you?

A lot of us know each other IRL. I'm talking hanging out, roaming the streets, backyard BBQ, babysitting each other's kids kinda shit. Plant-swapping, garden-tip-sharing, home-improvement-helping all up in there.

You should be really disturbed by the fact that people with tens of thousands of posts here are totally indistinguishable from that guy with the station wagon and three kids down the street, or the mom at the grocery store, or the old guy at the coffee shop, or the returning college student who rides her bike to school.

Me, I look like Joe Sixpack blue collar worker.

I'm not going to say the poor bastard deserved it, but he had it coming.  Interfering with underpaid border partrol officers because you want to be a smarty pants= bad day.  Just open your fucking trunk and be on your way.

So what's it like to have no spine?

Hassle free.

Sure.  They don't have to get you, because you've been had all along.  The hook has been in your mouth for so long, you don't even feel it anymore.

Yeah, cause it's all a big conspiracy and big brother and blah blah blah.  Your take on "reality" is just as restrictive as the average media sucking binge and purge sheep of an american that walks around with his head up his ass all day long.  I'm not impressed.

No, everything is fine!   :lulz:

You can tell just by looking around!   :lulz:

Bumpity.

Dok,
Feeling all necromantic.

That's the same guy?  Huh.  I kinda hope he gets his right violated a bit more, both so he'll suffer and so he can point out where the government is over reaching.

Why does the guy's beliefs outside of this incident even have a bearing on how he was dealt with?

The border police didn't know that he was a bigoted pastor.  They just know someone was standing up to them.
The filth that kicked the piss out of him had no idea that the guy had shitty ideas.

It's such a fucking monkeyminded attitude to look at the guy's failings as a person for justification of those border cops' behavior.

Someone cited a constitutional right and ended up in a stomp circle.  That's what happened here.

My name is Sigmatic, and I say fuck anybody who approves of what happened.

I wasn't justifying the border patrol's actions.  I was saying I was glad it was a nasty person who got stomped, and that I was glad that he brought to light the fact that the stomping was a violation of his rights and shouldn't happen.  My point was that they are still violating rights, and I hope that they go and violate his again, so that he can cause a big publicity shitstorm.  And so he can suffer.

Yes, well, stop interfering with my blanket statements.
