Someone should make one of those virtual fireplaces, but with some flaming appliance.

Hmmmm, I wonder how easily a gas dryer could be converted to a gas fireplace?

Something I have seen work around here is starting a local Facebook group, especially one in which people bitch about things in an amusing way. Enough people join, a movement begins, and the best thing is that the people in the group WILL get out and vote. It only took about 3000 people (in a city of I don't know, a million-ish I think) to elect a new, previously unknown city councilor here.

These have been all over the Facebooks. I  think they're super neat, especially when you view them as an art form and not a comestible sweet.

Hey there, new guy!

I've been off Nigeling the shit out of things for a few days, but I'm looking forward to getting to know you. Many of us here cook, so please, jump on into an existing cooking thread, or feel free to start your own!

#1 tip I can give you is, try not to confuse any of us for any of the others of us. We are an "us" only loosely speaking (some more so than others), and often disagree with each other.

Most of us have a specialty of some sort. If you want to know stuff about brains, I'm your man. I have also been known to be an obnoxious, pedantic know-it-all about my area of interest, so if you just wanna think about stuff in a wibbly-wobbly unscientific armchairy sort of way, tell me and I'll shut up.

My heritage forces me to take umbrage at the concept of oxidized fat being classed as "awful". Culinary heathens the lot of you.

Dear god, please tell me that you people don't eat rancid grease. That shit is FULL of ROS.

The cellular mechanisms that transduce environmental stimuli into relevant neuronal signaling pathways are my specific subfield in neurobiology, and what I do is test proposed signaling pathways to find out whether the proposition holds water, so my first question is always "show me the pathway". There certainly could be primary taste receptors for unpleasant fatty acids in humans, I am just not comfortable accepting the specific claim without evidence that is a little better than circumstantial.

Hey new Spag! Welcome.

Well, thank you. I'd love to stay and play but as you can see I'm hard at work.

So we've  got Salty and Tart here. We just need sweet, bitter, and glutamate.

I just had to go and Google "the sixth flavor" initially vaguely thinking I could make a Prince joke based on your avatar Nigel...

Then I found several articles about "oleogustus" apparently also known as "awful". The taste of oxidized fat.

http://www.eater.com/2015/8/3/9090099/scientists-fat-sixth-taste

And this led me to "Emperor Fatberg Oleogustus, the Awful" as a character concept and then I hit "post" before it gets any worse.

I'll buy it when they identify a receptor for it.

If I have understood that first part of this correctly there are receptors.

https://academic.oup.com/chemse/article/40/7/507/400784/Oleogustus-The-Unique-Taste-of-Fat

most of the technical stuff and experimental description is beyond me, but it would seem that most of the qualifications are in order. I totally wouldn't have thought to look into it if you hadn't said something and had to get pretty specific with the search thread to eventually find this.

Nope. I looked at the studies they cite and they offer some limited support for the possibility of fat-specific taste receptors in rats.

I remember when people who were above-average, but not as smart as they thought they were, were Libertarian.

Those days are long gone.

As far as I can tell they're still in the barking stage.

The GOP seems a lot like a dog that actually caught the car it was chasing, much to its own surprise, and has no idea what to do with it now.

It seems as if they're still doing what most dogs would do, by sniffing it, barking madly at it for 20 minutes, then pissing on it and wandering off.

For a while I ignored my rage, thinking it would not shape my experiences. Then I would have small, short, intense bursts of rage.

Then I embraced it, fed off it, let it out at every opportunity. This led to bad decision making and severe burnout after a few years.

Now I look for ways to channel it, especially without strenuous work like massage to take the fight out of me. I think I will funnel it into my hatred for libertarians.

This is a good and worthy endeavor.

I'm reading "The New Jim Crow" by Michelle Alexander, about how mass incarceration is the modern caste system of white supremacy.

Interestingly, it was given to me by my septuagenarian mother, who is trying to become Woke in the wake of this election. I mean, she was always a "liberal democrat", but she was also born a WASP in Pasadena CA during the 40s, so...

It's really fun to watch.

That's pretty awesome! A hell of a book, too. Good for your mom!

How's Ingress these days? I haven't touched it since a year post beta. Are they still releasing those awful-acting-and-writing plot videos? those are something else

It is essentially unchanged.

I have never watched the videos, and I play with the sound off. I don't even care about their storyline.
