Title: TwitterGASM
Post by: Iason Ouabache on April 02, 2009, 02:26:13 AM
I've been having fun playing with Twitter for the last month or so.  Yes, 90% of the people on there are lame asses who think that other people care what they had for breakfast.  But I've also discoverd that it can be a powerful networking tool in the right hands.  We need to do something to raise the profile of Discordians on Twitter, whether we do that by having a GASM account to help promote missions or just by setting up an interconnected network through hashtags.

Relevent links:

http://twitter.com  <-obviously
http://twitter.com/jablair51 <- me
http://wefollow.com/ <- user directory that we can pervert for our nefarious purposes
http://hashtags.org/ <-more on hashtags
http://www.wildapricot.com/blogs/newsblog/archive/2008/03/11/an-introduction-to-twitter-hashtags.aspx  <- good users guide

I've already added myself to wefollow under the tags #discord and #eris.  We could add a #gasm tag too if this takes off.

Great, another another reason why I shouldn't be ignoring Twitter.

That's actually a very cool usage.  I borked up any chance I had with facebook after letting tons of friends and family on.  So now I avoid it like the fucking plague because really, if I wanted to broadcast to them all next time I wanted to take a dump, I'd just do it by email or something.

Using Twitter for a gasm or something sounds awesome.

Twitter would be a great way to spread memebombs too.

Protip:  read up on the "limited profile" feature.  You can select who gets to see what.  That way, only your chosen circle of friends will be able to stay informed of your colon's health.

Approximately half of my twitter posts are generated by NotBroken. Most people can't tell.

All is going to plan...

Btw, if you intend to spread memebombs, OM materials, &c there are several twitter services who are mostly just re-broadcasters. For instance, @memetweet will typically just repost whatever you send it with an @reply to you, and everyone following that person will get it. I have an absurdly large group of followers considering that I mostly post long strings of nonsense, so you can probably direct stuff to me if you want it reposted to a large group ( @enkiv2 )

I know this already--but then when I restrict their access, they whine.  I shit you not--this is a sign of people with too much time on their hands, they WANT to know the health of the colon.

So then I just don't show up.  Or lurk and don't post.

I approve of this idea.

IN fact, it may raise our profile and potentially bring in new recruits. Sjaantze does the twitter thing and often has back and forth comments between herself and people like John Cleese. If he were exposed to a few memebombs and a GASM or two... he may just poke back. There appear to be a number of high profile 'pranklike' individuals on Twitter.... this could be extremely useful.

I think I'll launch my gasms this weekend, then, since I'll have some time.  Just need to figure out if iPhone has a Twitter app.  I'm sure it does.

Fuck you Tosk.

Ok, I'm Officially slamming this thread into the Information Vectors thread (http://www.principiadiscordia.com/forum/index.php?topic=20408), and declaring TwitterGASM to be the communication-backbone of the InfoVector Master List used for recruiting, as a vector, and also to coordinate in real-time during peak memebomb throwing sessions (Ex: EVERYONE JUMP ON FACEBOOK, post this gif[godzillabukkake.chooseyourownadventure@tiny.url] to 5 friendsorgroups then meet us on BoingBoing +523 points).

We should really see if we can contact people in the current internet counterculture - groups like the former Technoccult site (now Renegade Futurist), Alterati (good for creative projects), the PDX Occulture lot...and work from there.  The first two in particular churn out links and promotions like nobodies business, and with the added bonus of attracting our sort of crowd.
Disinfo.com (http://www.disinfo.com/content/) would be a good target too.  If there are enough of us there we could vote the story up and get it on the main page.

Quote from: Telarus on April 01, 2009, 07:53:20 PM
Can we start setting up a wiki page for these memetic infection vectors?

We can break it down into sections and have easy links to register for sites like stumbleupon, boingboing, LJ, etc, etc.

If we can make it very easy for the PD members that are less interested in trying to organize this thing to get all set up with accounts everywhere we need them, then we can have our mob pre-register over a few weeks time. Then once we have something ready to infect the web with we would have a large group of agents that can just jump in and start posting/commenting/bumpng our stuff all over without having to go through the hassle of signing up for each site right before they do so.

Yes, that's a great idea.

let's create a naughty stepchild of Discordian_Websites_and_Communities (http://blackironprison.com/index.php?title=Discordian_Websites_and_Communities) called http://blackironprison.com/index.php?title=Discordian_Vectors (http://blackironprison.com/index.php?title=Discordian_Vectors)

with the sweetest spots to seed stuff

but here's the ten million dollar question - where is the most fertile soil (generally) for planting ideas?

There's your answer Cram. At the moment, it's Twitter. Once we have momentum in that, it will spill to the other places.

The spamming technique these days seems to be this: spam companies will create accounts of arguably real people who consider themselves marketing geeks, who will follow people who fall into a certain grouping in terms of followed-to-following ratios, and then if they get followed in return they will start spamming via direct message.

This doesn't particularly matter to me, since I typically use twitter for an input source for more or less unpredictable and diverse data and as a way of allowing my bots to annoy facebook users.

@drjon (yes, our drjon) has crafted a profile lookup bookmarklette: http://revdrjon.blogspot.com/2009/04/another-bloody-twitter-bookmarklet-user.html

Drag and drop it onto your bookmark toolbar (Firefox). Then highlight a twitter username (without the @) and hit the button. You'll be taken to their profile page.

Damn, I need to get my Twitter acct setup.  :x

There are ways to send Tweets with text messages. Just go to Settings-> Device and add your phone number. I don't use it to receive updates from other people because I don't want hundreds of texts per day.

The only problem I've had with the site so far is that it has eaten several of my posts. I heard that they are working on that though.

Yeah, # indicates a #hashtag and you can search for them and there are sites that track all conversations with that #hashtag.

You can include it in the message, like "This message is about #PDSpags, are you a #PDSpag?" or you can just tack it onto the end of a message.

For the 5th fucking time (yeah I know I said I'd quit after the 4th time; bite me), it's telling me my password is wrong! After the first few times I decided that maybe the password I had chosen was just too complex for my idiot brain to type properly more than once, but after changing my password to "fuckyou" it STILL doesn't work!

Fuck you Twitter. I don't know what your god damn problem is, but you can shove it so far up your ass covered in superglue that it sticks to your lymphatic system and I can yank the whole thing out and use it to enrich my Jenkem brew, which I then make you huff until radioactive waste pours from your eye sockets.

I don't know what your god damn problem is, but you can shove it so far up your ass covered in superglue that it sticks to your lymphatic system and I can yank the whole thing out and use it to enrich my Jenkem brew, which I then make you huff until radioactive waste pours from your eye sockets.

Try just opening a new account?

Ok, we seem to have quite a few people going. So, next part of the Project:

-List you username (in Bold).

-List 5 (to ten) people you recommend following (who aren't on this board)

{After we have a few rounds of this, I'm going to ask for people on the board who haven't posted or we have missed.}

Then we build the wiki-page, and start looking at the over-all network setup. Does anyone know of visualization software for that kind of network?

:mittens: I know there are more of you lurking this thread, spill the infos already.

@skilluminati is @brainsturbator (Justin Boland, aka the rap artist thirtyseven, aka PIZZA S.E.O. blog, and websites on both twitter usernames).

Idea Note: CD full of intermittens bundled with some of thirtyseven's work (if he'd be willing to donate a few tracks), along with a few tracks from the music spags from here = memetic viral-bomb. Then, tweet the website link to the network forming here, and make burning and hiding the CDs in public a GASM.

Anyone want to have a crack at naming this network, just so I can stop using the word network all the network.

I was actually thinking that the network would be more or less joined by the use of a hashtag, rather than having an account for it... Like #THEGASM

Ok, been poking around with the hashtags. #om seems to be in wide use referring to something other than our OM.

I'm going with #gasm (#GASM) as it will segue people into the other GASMs pretty well. We can use #eris and #discord for other subjects.

Ok, I'm going to be linking to some interesting/useful twitter "things" (apps, visualizations, etc). If you come across something cool you can do with twitter, please post it here.

If you've been reading this thread and haven't signed up for Twitter or haven't spilled your username and top 5 'to follow'.....

Well, fucking do it already. That is all.

Links:

Hashtag.org "Trends": http://hashtags.org/trends/now
-This will be very useful once we have TwitterGASM up to speed. This will allow us to peak at the 'current' topics of conversation (which we could then piggyback off of).

Twitter Friends Network Browser: http://www.neuroproductions.be/twitter_friends_network_browser/
-Friends Network Viz, should come in handy. A little clunky, tho.

TwitterThoughts: http://yvoschaap.com/twitterthoughts/
-TwitterThoughts is an advanced tool and mashup that visually graphs Twitter trends based on a variety of factors, such as number of tweets and followed total. It takes its information from a sample subset of Twitter accounts. The data can be complicated to work with, but it is a unique way to visualize data on Twitter. It also comes with a world Twitter map and a list of recent top Twitter trends.

Twitter StreamGraphs: http://www.neoformix.com/Projects/TwitterStreamGraphs/view.php
-Twitter StreamGraphs is another data-based visualization of Twitter trends. Instead of loading bar charts or line items, it uses stream graphs to display words and tags associated with a keyword, based on a thousand recent tweets. It's especially adept at visualizing tweets over time and can visualize the top keywords of any individual tweeter.

TweetWheel: http://tweetwheel.com/
-Nice circular Viz with pretty colors.

InFlow: http://orgnet.com/inflow3.html
-Shows emergent patterns and groups followers by "interest clusters". THIS IS A GOOD ONE, costs $ tho.

TweetBeep: http://tweetbeep.com/
-Get email updates on tweets that include specific keywords.

TwitterLocal: http://www.twitterlocal.net/
-Filter tweets by geographic location. May be useful to track targeted OM activities, like a local PosterGASM blitz.

Ok, I'm trying out the TweetWheel site right now, will post graphic in a little while.

hi peepl, my twitter acct is http://twitter.com/tripzilch I just added a whole bunch of people (from here) for following, so you should see me.

i haven't posted much on my twitter acct, i was a bit skeptical about its use at first, but I randomly gave it a shot for trying to follow the news about the queen's day disaster in Apeldoorn, and ... well turns out twitter is more than perfect for getting real time, at the moment news, including inside-scoops and rumors, and often more information or the first than the traditional media outlets, just by following #apeldoorn and later #k09 I got to see pictures and info about the idiot that did it (via his license plate, people looked up registration, etc) within half an hour of it happening, fucking surreal and completely amazing.

so yeah, twitter, I'm in.

All social websites have a limited life cycle. MySpace is mostly dead. Facebook is likely to decline soon. Twitter is on the uptick. The only thing that will keep a site like this going is constant innovation. You'll notice that MySpace's decline almost exactly coincides with Tom getting bought out by Rupert Murdoch.

I'm sure that Twitter is just a fad that we'll laugh about with our grandkids though.

Random idea: a Twitter bot that twits random high-ranked membombs from the membomb tool every 24hrs or so
Would be a good automated way to spread the memebombs, and would synergize amazingly with the tool, especially if it links back to the tool (on profile or every time it posts).
(If I had teh coding skillz I would do this myself, but I don't code. :()

I'd need a server to run it, cause I'm not online 24/7

Go with a bot that tweets 1 memebomb per X hours, building a queue from "new memebombs in the top 23" or something.
Title: Re: TwitterGASM
Post by: Verbal Mike on May 10, 2009, 11:05:17 PM
Probably best to have a tinyurl to the memebomb's page, with the format:
<MEMEBOMB> <URL>
In lots of cases it would look like the memebomb itself could refer to something in a link, so people may see the link and click it to "find out more"... And thus they discover the database.
y/n? /m?

I have a server and can run it. I certainly can write it as well. Should this be a separate account? I can mainline it into my own account, which has plenty of followers off PD.

I can go by my cached version of the DB easily, but if you want it based on the memebomb db as it exists, I will have to do some spagging around with page dumping and forbid people from changing the format significantly without telling me (otherwise I'd end up spamming gibberish to twitter -- goddess forbid!)
Title: Re: TwitterGASM
Post by: Verbal Mike on May 11, 2009, 01:44:11 AM
I think a separate account would be pretty cool.
Title: Re: TwitterGASM
Post by: Triple Zero on May 12, 2009, 12:03:36 AM
1. separate account please

2. the memebomb tool has xml output: http://www.principiadiscordia.com/memebombs/?action=list&o=rating&m=100&template=xml so given a good high level programming language (like python) parsing should be easy peasy (google python+sax for simple and basic xml parsing). also posting to twitter is easily done with the python twitter module (google it), so you could be done in 20 lines of code :)

TODO: export the table to a blog so we can have safari trips and act like monkeys

QuoteYou can create groups of up to 30 people in each box of a grid.

To create a group, type group: (that's the word "group" with a colon) followed by a comma-separated list of up to 30 twitter usernames.

Example:     group:jazzychad, tweetgrid, biz, ev, waynesutton, respres, takeroot

Click Here for an example grid using the above group.

You do not need to put an @ symbol in front of each name.

This will update the box with only tweets from this group of people. At the moment there is no way to filter groups for keywords, but that is coming next.

not really nonsense is salvation

newser.com/story/60875/jilted-guy-hides-ring-in-twitter-treasure-hunt.html
A New Zealand man who finds himself with a “spare ring” is going to hide it somewhere in the capital city Saturday—and post clues as to its location on a Twitter treasure hunt, the Dominion Post reports. Currently some 700 followers are gunning for Anthony Gardiner's $3,200 ring, which bears five .25-carat diamonds.

ENKI do you follow back everybody that starts following you? often if you don't follow back your followers some will unfollow you.

because there's lots of "twitter marketers" and I dunno .. stuff .. might even be legit, but they just seem to trigger whenever you use certain words, and you get another follow. I mention "Python" and I get retweeted by some random Python-Bot with a lot of followers, really if the thing just retweets whoever mentions "Python", who'd want to read that?? (or even has the time to sort the crud from the crap)

anyway, my point is that if you output nonsense, you probably hit a pretty wide variety of keywords, and attract a wide variety of people that follow you.

I follow anyone who seems like a human non-marketroid who might seem interesting who follows me, or a bot that doesn't appear to be a spammer. That means that perhaps one out of every sixteen people who follow me I follow back.

If they say "marketing" in their bio, that's a good tipoff that they are a meat/sock puppet spammer who will direct message you a bunch of stuff you don't care about. Same with any username that looks like a bunch of arbitrary characters paired with an exceedingly generic name. Others will be somewhat less obvious, but if somebody starts spamming me, I will unfriend them pretty quickly. That stat is probably nearly a month old, though -- I got it from mistertweet, which only updates once a month.

a question, since a few weeks twitter auto-shortens some longer URLs with bit.ly, does anyone know a trick to prevent this from happening?

cause sometimes i want to include the full URL so people become aware of a domain, or simply because the URL is descriptive enough and would allow one to fit more into the 140 char limit than having to sacrifice 12-20 chars to an obtuse bit.ly code.

i know it has something to do with twitter and bit.ly having the same mother company (or some similar connection) and naturally it is datamining GOLD to obtain all information about all the URLs shared through Twitter.

In case you didn't know, bit.ly also logs the twitter user to share a link, the twitter user clicking on it and discussions in which it is retweeted.

Fortunately we can all access this wonderful information as well! And it is as easy as appending a "+" to the bit.ly URL, example:

http://000.blackironprison.com/holy-fuck-stickers.html >> http://bit.ly/zjX6k >> http://bit.ly/zjX6k+

the last link doesnt take us to the stickers webpage, but to an info webpage on bit.ly, showing the link has been clicking 55 times, 31 times from the US, 8 times from the Netherlands and 8 from outer space.

it also got a nice bar graph showing activity over time.

very useful to track success of your memes. so, all in all, having bit.ly autoconversion on twitter isnt all bad, it's just kinda bad :-)
Title: Re: TwitterGASM

Another random idea: the hypothetical memebot could, once every five memes, select a random trending hashtag and append it to the tweet. This will get a random subsection of the tweeted memes a totally disproportionate amount of attention. This depends, of course, on the memebomb tool being something we actually want the world to see.

BTW, Trip, thanks for the info on bit.ly, it's really useful that you can track your links that way!
Title: Re: TwitterGASM
Post by: Triple Zero on June 23, 2009, 12:30:53 PM
hm actually, I got this little piece of code lying around here, for calculating something called the "Generalized Yahoo Distance", which could be used to correlate words from the memebomb with some of the trending topics, to see which it would fit best (according to a bunch of stats gathered from Yahoo!Search result pages).

however, about trending hashtags, the fact that they are trending just means that a lot of people post tweets with those hashtags in them. that doesnt mean a lot of people are following/searching for those tags, afaik. they probably are already spammed to death by the fact they are top-trending, personally I would be quite reluctant to follow a hashtag that is trending cause of all the noise on it?

unfortunately you can't really find out anywhere which tags people are following, afaik.
Title: Re: TwitterGASM
Post by: Verbal Mike on June 23, 2009, 01:49:32 PM
But you can guess. I would guess when a trending topic starts trailing off into the long tail of tweets that are past the topic peak, there will be a lot of people seeing the topic or the hashtag and wondering what's being/been said, which would lead them to search for the topic. It's the point where latecomers have to figure out the trend before getting on the bandwagon. At the same time, it would not be so heavily spammed as to make it impossible for anyone to notice something thrown in. This is all, of course, just theory. The bit.ly tracking info might be a good tool for testing this stuff.

Twitter recently became the communique of choice for the almost cultishly popular Kogi BBQ trucks, roving Korean-style taco vendors in Los Angeles that use the 140-character, cell phone-friendly missives to alert customers to their whereabouts and menu items.

And she thinks the success of food truck Tweets likely will inspire a broader use of Twitter across the food world.

I have to mark twittergasm as loosely a success of some kind. I keep on seeing RTs of memebombs by people who are not even tangentally involved with discordianism, even of the non-peedy variety.

Some examples:

Exoplanetology @archetyper @blustr RT @enkiv2 Reality is the original Rorschach Test. #memebomb
advertisinglies RT @Jablair51 Black sheep are still sheep. #memebomb
murmur55 RT @enkiv2 Ridicule may lawfully be employed where reason has no hope of success. #memebomb #discordia || #police #lawenforcement

Ah. When I was composing that list, I left out anyone who I recognized from prior correspondence, and anyone who appeared to know about discordianism (this means I left out the retweets from qjohn). I imagine we could determine pretty good statistics on who is probably being exposed to the memebombs without using links, just by looking at all the retweeters and how many mutual friends they have, and the percentage of responses to statements they get.

I haven't, per-se. I still have the code. The problem is still connecting it to SOMA. It shouldn't be *too* hard, but I still haven't gotten around to it.

If anyone else wants to give it a go, the code is hanging around.

posting stuff to twitter automatically is nto that hard, ENKI already wrote that (afaik part of his tweets are generated already? corrrect me if im wrong).

the memebomb database outputs data in XML format, which should be as easy as pointing an XML parser at it in a programming language that supports files over http (such as PHP or Python, not sure maybe even Perl).
Title: Re: TwitterGASM
Post by: Rococo Modem Basilisk on September 27, 2009, 07:45:56 PM
Yep. I have one that will automatically grab from a text file or a fortune cookie file, cut it down, append the hashtag, etc. I'm just not familiar enough with the various python xml parsers to be able to figure out how to get them to do what I want them to. The focus of all the ones I've seen has been on getting tag args, rather than tag content. I may just use regexes, rather than bothering with xml parsers.
