IN SCIENCE! it is still the 1980's, and GIRLS LOVE MAKEUP!!!

I love makeup.

But do you love science and maths??  And why do you love makeup? serious question.

Surely if you want to get girls into science 'n maths you need to be doing it with tellytubbies or somesuch. By the time they are 5 or 6 Barbie has grabbed them by the gonads and kindly relatives are giving them toy kitchens and baby sized toy vacuum cleaners - hey girls do any of you really think house cleaning is a game? If you haven't got the developing skills and mindset by the time you are out of infant school you are going to be fighting an uphill battle, and if you haven't got the developing skills and mindset why would you even bother, just look forward to having babies

I don't think Nigel's implication was that "GIRLY STUFF=BADWRONG"

I think she meant "ASSUMING THAT THE ONLY THING WE KNOW HOW TO RESPOND TO IS GIRLY STUFF IS FUCKING OFFENSIVE AND RETARDED"

Assuming that people who are into girly stuff are living "MATH IS HARD! TEE HEE!" barbies is just as fucked.

Yes I did read the rest of your post, though apparently you didn't read the rest of mine. And you didn't answer the question. But you did make the assumption that the person behind the ad was a man. And that is the whole thing behind my point - when it comes to "sexist assumptions" you need to really step back and look at the unspoken sub-text behind our behaviours, beliefs and assumptions. It is as likely that the ad people behind this thing are women who think that "Assuming that people who are into girly stuff are living "MATH IS HARD! TEE HEE!" barbies is [ ] fucked" than some wizzened old scrotes from the 50's who are totally out of touch with contemporary "post-feminist" society.  FFS we live in a world where even a beautiful young woman like Pixie seems to feel that she needs to wear a cosmetic "Mask" to achieve a "special occasion mek a Pix feel pretty" feeling. I realise I am pushing that comment to the limit to make a point but just think about it for a minute. That's all I'm saying.

Oh and I just read Nigel's post. Someone should totally make that ad, just for the yucks.
So Nigel same question. Do you ever wonder why you love makeup and girly things? Not do you ever think that you shouldn't be doing/thinking that, you're letting down the sisterhood; but just taking the time to consider why you feel that way about girliness for want of a better term?

Makeup, perfume, etc. are science too, BTW.

Speaking for myself, not Nigel, self-decoration is a human thing and it's fun. Guys do it too. Maybe they should also be put on the hotseat and asked why they're into things like facial hair and tattoos? I mean since it's about equality and all.  :x

Tis true. Some days I simply don't give a shit, others I take pride in things such as my hair, dress nice, smell nice, take a look at myself and feel like, "Damn I look good!" Though the only real commercials you see of guys trying to look good is an ad for a suit or Axe sprays. You see stuff for women every 30 seconds. So I too must ask myself "Is it that women are mindfucked into thinking this in particular is beautiful or do women do it because they want to without the subliminal culture bashing?"

Guys get the subliminal culture bashing in a slightly more externalized way. "Drive this truck, drink this beer and if that doesn't get the women hanging all over you, take this viagra."

If anything, it's probably worse. Commercials suck, period.

Ornamentation seems to be a natural human drive. The exact form the ornamentation takes, though, is culturally influenced. I like pretty dresses and earrings and eyeshadow because my enculturation tells me that these things are attractive for my sex.

Exactly. And I don't see a problem with that at all.

I mean, FFS, this is NIGEL. I can't see her falling into the "Tee hee! I don't know how to do math!" thing.

Except possibly to troll the shit out of somebody who had it coming.  :lulz:

I am super into girly stuff. I love dresses and perfume and makeup and my vagina. But that has pretty much nothing whatsoever to do with science. It makes as much sense as trying to sell a nursing career to boys by making a commercial that's all about touching their cocks. Boys are super into their penises, so it makes perfect sense, right? Hey boys! Nursing, and fondling your genitals! Become a nurse, and you can still rub your junk!

Hmmm... Sounds intriguing.

Triple Zero

"The original video was taken down after it received so many negative comments."

IMO, it'd be an actual slap in the face if they hadn't done that. The EU program intended to get more females into hard sciences [and technical jobs in general because not everybody goes to university and becomes a scientist] is actually not too bad, taken on the whole. I say that because I'm actually aware of such campaigns' existence before this thread, and most of the stuff they do is not ridiculous like this at all.

What I see is a retarded (most probably male) graphics designer that made an utterly stupid video, who was obviously more interested in creating visual impact, than in making sure the underlying message gets communicated properly while severely underestimating the complexity of emancipation topics, and treating it frivolously.

Then the famous glacially slow-moving bureaucracy of the EU doesn't notice until too late, retracts it, but it's out and someone reuploads it to Youtube.

My point is, you can be all frothing rage at this blunder, but that rage is going to be pointed at an EU program that actually has done a lot of good before it hired the ad agency that came up with this stupid video. Retracting that video is really all they could do to make up for the mistake. And that really makes me wonder what the person who put the video back up was thinking this would accomplish: Bad press for the EU's role in furthering emancipation efforts.

IMO it would be different if they did this sort of thing all the time, if most of their campaigns were this stupid. But that's not my experience. For instance, at the Young Researchers, there's a poster about women in technical jobs, that shows normal women (can't quite tell if they're ad models or not) in normal working outfits, overalls, hard hats (some of them), proudly stating that "boys are often surprised when I tell them what I do for a living" with the type of grin that shows they enjoy shattering those preconceived notions. Much better, no? -- Although come to think of it, I'm not sure if that one's paid for by the EU, could be a national thing too.

It kind of reminds me of another campaign, made by the Dutch government in order to promote the EU Constitution that we were going to have a referendum about. They showed images of the Holocaust, the Srebrenica genocide and the Madrid bombings and then said "you better vote for the EU Constitution" (link to video). It was also taken offline rather quickly (within 2 hours of publication, even), and never got broadcast on TV. But in that case, the outrage was IMO rather more justified: because that whole EU Constitution thing was a rather bad idea (that we got regardless, even though the majority of people voted against).

But in this case, the intentions are actually rather good, it's just that the execution leaves a lot to be desired. The desire for execution of whoever came up with that vid, for instance.

On a sidenote, NL is actually doing fairly well with emancipation in certain scientific fields (especially math, for some reason), mostly thanks to national campaigns to. As usual, it takes some time before those effects trickle through to higher positions (first you got to get more female science students, so there's more women with a science degree, so there will be more women doing a PHD, and a second PHD, and more women in a tenure track, so finally 15 years later you can have more female professors) and it appears we're slowly seeing the results of that now. However, there are a lot of other EU countries that can still use a lot of work in that area (I was particularly surprised about Austria).

The advantage of free speech is this:  Even idiots get to get ridiculed in public.

The advantage of censorship is this:  Unpopular ideas aren't considered, humorlessly or otherwise.

Except taking offline a blundering abortion of a failed ad campaign doesn't have much to do with free speech or censorship.

Or do you mean the negative comments? Because that's just Youtube comments, they don't keep comments around for removed videos. Any comments made on a more permanent medium such as a blog or whatever are still around and I don't see the EU trying to censor those.

I'm not sure what you're referring to.

All I'm saying is that the person that reuploaded that video ("Sarah Connor", a one-shot account) cares about women's emancipation in the EU, they might do better than spotlighting blunders of retracted women's emancipation campaigns.

In other words, yes, I agree, I too would have been outraged if they had actually followed through with using that clip for their campaign and I'm rather relieved that the EU Commission had the uncharacteristic presence of mind to see their fault and retract it.

And if that person cares about ridiculing idiots in public, then it'd probably help to actually identify the idiots responsible, be it the person that commissioned it, or the ad agency that produced it.

The EU Commission can try again and start a better campaign, IMO. But I'd like to find out the name of that ad agency in particular, they came up with that poop and probably received a ridiculous amount of tax euros for it. Good chance that's in a public record on some .eu site somewhere.
