Or Kill Me / Re: Knowing we are Free
June 29, 2008, 05:20:25 AM
Verbatim: If it's all right, I'd like to use this on our website.

I have a friend who survived solitary confinement for several months (30 days is the ordinary maximum they can give you in America) by thinking about all the freedom e had, even in a tiny one-person cell.  E'd think things like I can eat all the food they give me, or some of it, or none of it.  I can throw it on the floor.  I can be quiet, I can talk to myself, I can whistle any tune, I can sing any song I want, I can scream.  E realized that, even locked up by emself, e had virtually endless choices.  Several others lost it; but almost every day, my friend experienced joy.

Sink is described in Principia Discordia, 4th edition, on page 00066.

I'd post a link to how to play 1000 Blank White Cards, but when I post links here I get flamed.  I've never played that online, but IRL it can be very funny and a lot of fun.  It's something like Calvinball, where you make your own rules by making your own cards.  You can get some links to different versions of it by searching for "1000 Blank White Cards," or "1KBWC."

pfft!  That wanker?  No way, I'm Miss Scarlett.

My favorite solution to a Cluedo/Clue game (it's called different names depending on where you live):

Miss Scarlett in the bedroom with a candlestick.

Love the pic.

By the way, aren't you the one who tried to get me pregnant a couple months ago at a state park in New Jersey?  I was the one dressed as the purple chao.

If I may be forgiven for recycling a photo posted here by burnstoupee pancakes:

It's not a true homonym, but very close.

I completely failed to get the point the PD was making, and took it at mostly face value, as a piece of absurdism and/or a particularly psychotic branch of paganism....

Ironically, it was apparently Discordian co-creator Kerry Thornley who coined the term paganism, at least as it's used today.

Seriously? Can you give a source on that? Because I find that fascinating.

Hopefully I won't get flamed for posting another link, but as you asked...

http://www.amazon.com/Prankster-Conspiracy-Thornley-Inspired-Counterculture/dp/193104466X says 'He coined the term "paganism" to describe various nature religions.'  You can buy Thornley's excellent book (which tells more about the background of Discordianism than any book I know of) there, or through some Discordian website or other I won't link to else I'll get flamed.

Whatever, Net came over to my house for our own little ripoff of Kallisticon, we called it "here, let's ship this shit and BTW at first I thought your bike had a HIMEOBS sticker on it, haha I want one" and then I took some pictures of him and he went home, so FUCK YOU, COPYCAT.

As it happens, St. Mae knew about our little ripoff before hand and thought it was great.  The good saint has no problem with people copying the idea of having a Discordian unconvention, just as Professor Cramulus has no problem with people asking for copies of the good Professor's posters so they can post the same things the professor already posted.

Me and a few friends got together this weekend for what we called ShamliCon (a tiny little ripoff of St. Mae's KallistiCon).  I hate having photos taken of anything I'm involved in (photos are evidence, you know), but one of our little group insisted on taking some pics of some posters and the like we distributed.  No, they aren't available right now.  Our photobug insists on using something called 'film,' and further insists on getting it sent out for developing instead of going to a one-hour lab, so don't know when the pics will be in.  But when they are, will scan, will post.

QuoteThere are a series of interviews with Thornley with Sondra London from around '92 (I have them on my blog somewhere, if you are interested go here: http://baronvonhoopla.blogspot.com/2007/11/9th-anniversery-of-omars-check-out.html) where he seems more or less completely coherent.  If he was able to maintain this sort of discourse it seems likely to me he could still collaborate on projects.

Cool.  I'll be busy through the weekend, but after that I'll definitely have to check that out.

I just heard from St. Mae.  The good saint said whether the work is from Thornley's writings or not, what Mae has seen so far is good stuff.  The guy's an artist, and did some drawings that impressed Mae.  And a connection by mail seems more likely to me than an in person connection, which is what I was thinking at first.  Maybe I was stuck in my own reality tunnel?  In any case, I'm looking forward to seeing the work too.

Awesome!

Of course, now we'll have to wonder if he was collaborating with Kerry, or if he just claims that ;-)

Personally, I have my doubts Kerry Thornley was much involved.  He was dealing with paranoia for about the last 10 years of his life, and cut off associations with just about everyone.  His old friend Robert Anton Wilson said that Thornley became convinced Wilson was with the CIA, and for a while Wilson himself had a mild fear that when he left his home Thornley might be there to attack him out of deluded self-preservation.

Thornley's paranoia may have begun with Jim Garrison's investigation of the connection between Thornley and John F. Kennedy's assassin (or supposed assassin) Lee Harvey Oswald.  Or it may have begun earlier, for apparently Thornley, Oswald and a few others who were in the U. S. Marines together were subjects in some type of military experiment involving brain-affecting chemicals.  (Adam Gorightly wrote about this in The Prankster and the Conspiracy, which is where much of this post is from.  I'm writing from memory, so may be a little off on a couple details).

In any case, Thornley became increasingly incoherent.  I once heard him rant in the very late 1980s or very early 1990s, and he talked about having a warehouse full of information on various conspiracies.  He then asked a reporter what year he was born; when the reporter told him, Thornley said, "You'll be dead in three years, probably by fire."  He sounded completely serious, whereas Thornley in his right mind apparently always had a sense of tongue-in-cheek about him.

During those last years, Thornley traveled here and there and would suddenly disappear, sometimes living on the street or with whoever was willing to deal with his mental illness, for which he refused treatment.  Apparently, that's a common problem among those suffering from what they call or used to call (I'm not a psychologist, so don't know for sure) paranoid schizophrenia--if you're paranoid, you're likely to think the doctor is out to get you.  He then had several medical problems and ended up getting regular dialysis after suffering kidney failure.

All in all, it seems unlikely he trusted anyone enough during those last years to work on a book with em.
