Title: "We the People" Petitions to Secede
Post by: Juana on November 12, 2012, 06:16:46 PM
 From Gawker (http://gawker.com/5959719/we-the-people-petitions-filed-in-nineteen-states-seeking-permission-to-secede-from-the-union)
QuoteIn the aftermath of last week's presidential election, residents in at least nineteen states have put up petitions on the government's "We the People" petitioning website seeking the right to secede from the rest of the country.

While the petitions themselves may not be significant, the reaction could be.

Petitions for secession filed from Louisiana and Texas have already received well over 10,000 signatures. Per the website's own rules, petitions that garner 25,000 signatures or more within 30 days require a response from the Obama administration.

Similar petitions from Alabama, Tennessee, and, interestingly, Oregon, are also gaining traction, with each receiving thousands of supporters over the weekend alone.

Other states in which residents have expressed an interest in going their own way include Kentucky, Montana, North Dakota, Mississippi, North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, New York, New Jersey, Colorado, Arkansas, South Carolina, and Missouri.

As unilateral secession was ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court, it remains to be seen if this movement is more than a toothless temper tantrum thrown by armchair revolutionaries
:lulz: :lulz: South Carolina has two of these going around, which is hilarious (for non-Amerispags, SC was the first state to secede from the Union during the Civil War).

I say we let Texas go.

I notice Arizona isn't on that list.  That's because our state is JUST sane enough to realize we'd be helpless on our own, and everyone would be eaten by wild coyotes.

I mentioned that Texas would be at the mercy of Mexico.  For some reason the asshats think that Texas could defend itself from Mexico and the cartels. almost that federal funding for the military bases gone. ..sure thing.

Yeah, their ideas on what a proper defense would cost are laughable.  I've heard these morons make their case for independence, and I say let 'em have it.  They're an embarrassment anyway.

Stella should get out before then, though.

Given that most, if not all, of these states take in more federal money than they pay out in federal taxes, if we let 'em go, the rest of us get another tax cut...  Hm.

Naw.  You'd wind up with Eastern Europe.  Just Texas, because everyone hates them.  The rest can sack up and deal with losing an election.

It IS funny to observe who loves their party more than their country, though.

I agree with the secessionists. If they don't want to be American, fuck 'em. Let's see how quickly the Confederacy becomes impoverished. Sometimes you need to learn the hard way that taxes from blue states are supporting your freeloading state's ass. Don't like welfare moms? I don't like states that leech off the system.

And when all is said and done and they want to rejoin the United States I say we refuse to do so, but rather buy up the property and consider the unpatriotic states to be territories. We can break them up into many very small territories to make the argument that they don't have the population for statehood or representation in Congress.

We will however have to find a new spot for NASA.

I'd rather just leave them as they are, and let 'em scream.  We no longer have a regiment system, so they aren't going to be able to rebel for shit.  Stomp on 'em if they try.  I don't see throwing a whole state out of the union because 10,000 teabaggers signed a fucking petition.

Except for Texas, which should GTFO.

haha... a petition to ask the federal govt. what it thinks about the notion of secession?

don't these web petitions already have a history of being simply ignored even if they have the requisite number of signatures?

Pretty much.  Just says they'll LOOK at it if it has enough signatures.

I'm betting SOMEBODY there has a big-ass corkboard, with the "best of" pinned to it.

Wow, only ~30,000 people here want to secede?   I figured there would've been a lot more considering there are ~25.5 million people living here.  And that's after this last election when there would be a peak of butthurt.  Maybe I'm not giving Texas enough credit.

Naw.  They'll just be quietly ignored.  And by "ignored", I mean "the leadership of the movement will suddenly discover that their life has turned into a tragic series of misunderstandings of a bureaucratic nature".

The IRS will probably figure into that, alongside several other regulatory agencies.

The government has its fun.  Anyone who says differently is clearly stupid.

That's what happens when a country goes such a long time without a revolution and create a Safe (but constantly terrified) culture.

This whole thing is a non-starter.  It's a teabagger stunt.

I'd guess that there's a good amount of overlap where people are signing all of them.
I signed the 'kick out TX' petition, as well as the 'strip everyone who signed the secession petitions of their citizenship' petition.

Also, factor into your percentage the number of people from outside Texas that just want them fucking gone so we can get a little peace and quiet.

there's currently over 72k on the TX one. scrolling through, most seem to be from here, but there's a good number of out of state votes, too.
the next highest one, Louisiana, seems to have a higher percentage of out of state signatures from a quick perusal.

i think it's hilarious, and i am saddened that none of my friends support this asshattery as i do....
i am further saddened that several in my family do.  but they're SRS....

pessimist!
assuming we can keep the current rate up for a few days, and then allow for more stragglers to settle in until the Dec 9 deadline, we'll have several hundred thousand.
now, that's a far cry from 12.9 million, but if we can convince them to screech LOUD enough, then the threshold for 50% of the population will surely shrink rapidly as all the non-true Texans tuck their tails and run back to whatever librul cesspool they crawled here from.
add to that the spontaneous efforts of true patriots such as you and your backhoe, and i'll be sailing the great state of TX into the gulf in no time flat!
Yee-Haw!

Quote from: http://www.tnr.com/article/politics/110112/go-ahead-and-secede-texas-we-dare-you#Or maybe the solution is simply to give Texas and other secessionist-conservatives what they really want: free passage to the land of all their conservative fantasies. Send them all off with gratis one-way tickets (I'm happy to earmark some of my socialist tax dollars for the effort) to a country with: a small federal government with limited power and meager influence over the private lives of its citizens; extremely weak trade unions routinely sabotaged by the federal government (i.e., a "pro-business environment"); negligible income tax; few immigrants, legal or otherwise; a dominant Christian population, accounting for some 70 percent of the people; no mandatory health insurance or concept of universal health care; a strong social taboo surrounding homosexuality and a constitution that already states, "All individuals have the right to marry a person of their choice of the opposite sex"; and a gun culture so ubiquitous that you can find automatic weaponry displayed openly on the streets of its capital city and in many households.

Sound like a Texan secessionist's dream? Well, it's no dream. This country already exists. It's called the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Don't mess with us, Texas. You just might get what you want.

Nobody's going anywhere or seceding with anything.

But enjoy the frothy butthurt while it lasts.  In about 4-5 weeks, depression will settle in on the GOP, and shit won't be half as funny.

I say 4-5 weeks, because that's when they'll realize the "fiscal cliff" is the only bullet left in their gun, and it's aimed at their own bits.

And that's the beauty of the last week, and the next few weeks.  32 million teabaggers are finally being FORCED to see the world the way it really is, and their pain associated with that is delicious.

Hell, the companies that started laying people off on the 8th are all now in a world of hurt.

Papa John's Pizza, for example, is being hit with a court case (illegal text advertising) so hard that their stock price is in free fall.  Krogers is suddenly wondering where all their business volume went.  Etc.

Quote from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fellowship_%28Christian_organization%29#The_Fellowship_and_UgandaThe Fellowship, through Representative Joe Pitts (R.-Pa.), redirected millions in US aid to Uganda from sex education programs to abstinence programs, thereby causing an evangelical revival, which included condom burnings.

In a November 2009 NPR interview, Sharlet alleged that Ugandan Fellowship associates David Bahati and Nsaba Buturo were behind the recent proposed bill in Uganda that called for the death penalty for gays. Bahati cited a conversation with Fellowship members in 2008 as having inspired the legislation.

Sharlet reveals that David Bahati, the Uganda legislator backing the bill, reportedly first floated the idea of executing gays during The Family's Uganda National Prayer Breakfast in 2008. Sharlet described Bahati as a "rising star" in the Fellowship who has attended the National Prayer Breakfast in the United States and, until the news over the gay execution law broke, was scheduled to attend the 2010 U.S. National Prayer Breakfast.
