You see that there is no less barbaric method of execution - execution itself is barbaric.

Also nobody is actually proposing the guillotine, dude.

Dude I get that. I've got no interest in splitting hairs over what is less humane.
Or fighting when we are essentially in agreement about the nature of the thing.

Life can be seen as a game with no reset button, no extra lives, and if the power goes out there is no restarting.  If that's all you see life as you are not long for this world, and never will get it.

QuoteIf execution is to be made a display as a social deterrent where do we draw the line?
As a deterrent for criminals it won't work.
As a deterrent for using the death penalty it would work.
So IF you are going to do it, do it publicly and disgustingly messy and preferably painless. i.e. guillotine.
It would keep people motivated to keep their society just and fair, at least up to the point where they don't fucking kill people politely.

I underlined the conditional part of my post because conditions tend to be overlooked.

edit: EoC said it better.

As I said,  I understand and the IF is not lost on me.

Do not believe that I meant a nice, quiet and polite little death, but to make a grand, messy, and allegedly painless display seems like the wrong thing to me.

Basically, my point is that you were working from the assumption justice is there for individuals.

I take the opposite view; the justice system is what we rely on to set the rules of society, not of individuals. That's why it is important for people to be confronted by the acts carried out in their name.

It is the same reason I think people should see the result of drone strikes and hear the testimony of civilian survivors of 'collateral damage'. These are acts carried out on our behalf. If you make it sanitized and tuck it away from public view as much as possible, people can't really weigh the consequences of those actions and the victims become invisible.

So, my sleep schedule's utterly fucked, meaning I'm running around with a brain that may as well be half-drunk all day. It's severely impacting my reading comprehension for longer pieces, so I apologize for the limited interaction of late. At least making pretty things doesn't require that part of my brain.

Wife starts new gig today. Still waiting on these assholes to call. I was told they would call me. I already did the piss test a week ago.

The drafting job is waiting on the employer to see if I met their requirements on designing. If hired I get 15/hr fulltime with a 4 month contract. Which would be better than the call center job of 11/hr I'm also waiting on.

I also made 1k these last three days from yugiman sales.

THUGS!

In all honesty, I'm surprised no-ones shouted "violent criminals!" and just started shooting. Are we certain the source is the USA?

Gotcha. I see no social justice at all in execution and only dimly in a personal sense.

I understand that a criminal that, say, brutalized and murdered somebody's loved one or family owes a horrible debt to those he took from that literally cannot be repayed or made right. This is where I faintly see justice in execution.

I REALLY could be wrong in this, but the law of the jungle quietly underwrites all human motivation in my experience. If we have any advantage it's the ability to transcend that instincual "eye 4 an eye" mentality. I'll think this over some more.

As for the rest about disclosure I totally agree.

I'm reminded of a quote out of the Sid Meyer game Alpha Centauri.
