Title: Fashion Design: Steampunk
Post by: Kaienne on September 25, 2007, 06:51:14 AM
Here are a few pictures of my steampunk outfit. One's taken inside a nightclub, the other two in Kensington Market in Toronto. You can't see them in any of the pictures, but pretty much anywhere you find me you can find my djembe drum, carrier bag, army-surplus backpack with a sleeping bag strapped to the top of it, and my flag.
Well, not at the nightclub. Heh.

Steampunk...

I don't think you're using the word right...

QuoteSteampunk is a subgenre of fantasy and speculative fiction which came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century, and often set in Victorian era England—but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells, or real technological developments like the computer occurring at an earlier date. Other examples of steampunk contain alternate history–style presentations of "the path not taken" of such technology as dirigibles or analog computers; these frequently are presented in an idealized light, or a presumption of functionality. It is often associated with cyberpunk and shares a similar fanbase and theme of rebellion, but developed as a separate movement (though both have considerable influence on each other). Apart from time period and level of technological development, the main difference between cyberpunk and steampunk is that steampunk settings usually tend to be less obviously dystopian than cyberpunk, or lack dystopian elements entirely.

If those pics are an accurate representation, you seem to be sporting an "industrial gutterpunk" look.

Also, I'm a little worried as to what you must smell like.

Unless, of course, you've studied in Ghana.

Are you fucking retarded? Like, do you really seriously believe that in order for someone to be accomplished at playing a goddamned drum, the simplest and most ancient of instruments, one that's been in all kinds of cultures all over the world, one has to fly to another fucking continent and seek training with some kind of native tribe? Like, this kind of comment actually passes in your mind as a valid criticism? Were you dropped on your head as a child?

Why do you have to dance around it?

YES. I'm genderqueer. It makes you uncomfortable. I GET IT. THANK YOU.

HAY GUYS. HOW ABOUT ITT you discriminate against me for the original reason of the thread? Ask me "Oh God, you actually go out in public like that?" Or how about "You look like you fell out of a dumpster." It's really easy folks! I know it's seems difficult for a bunch of stale-ass, "jaded" fucks as yourselves to acknowledge that it's okay to be different, I understand that. But come on. This is lame even by your standards.

Thank you Vex and Rev, for actually posting something legitimately amusing.

I had always used Steampunk in a post-apocalyptic context. Like, world's been nuked or something, now people are back to using steam power to run salvaged modern appliances and such.

I still don't get the name though, Steampunk.  But then again, I really don't get the emo or goth stuff either.  It seemed like it was much simpler when I was young.  You were either a preppie, a jock, a nerd, or a poor kid.  But I suppose the explosion of net culture and all that jazz has made it all different now.

I see nothing in your appearence that indicates "post apocalyptic steam power".

I see a fishnet shirt, a bondage cuff, elbow pads, ridiculously baggy trousers, and a length of chain.

Oh, and a gas mask.

All of the above (including the ags mask) are previous innovations first worn by rivetheads, industrial goths, ravers, and bike messengers.

Also.

If I hear one more asshole think that just because they can almost keep time to a techno song, they can call themselves a 'drummer', I'm finding a clock tower.

You're playing "Louie, Louie" on a Stradavarius, dickhead.

There are at least 10 basic tones on a djembe, and about 2 dozen variations to each one of them.

You'd be lucky to find two of them.

The word Steampunk describes the world setting in which things that are adjective to it appear. In a post apocalyptic world, a gas mask might be necessary, as the air is probably unbreathably dirty. Clothes would be ripped and patched and mended and repaired numerous times, and since new stuff isn't being churned out of the factory, decoration would often come in the form of salvage. Since it's imperative to travel light and move often, as safety is not a common factor, one wouldn't have the luxury of being able to keep photo albums or scrap books; as such, were one of the inclination to carry a visual record of where they've been and what they've gone, tacking on a trinket here and there would be a natural recourse. Mixed in with fashion is utility; accessories such as elbow pads (and the gas mask, and goggles, etc.) are not only stylish, but also protect one while, say, salvaging through ruins or trying to fight or escape robbers, which may happen on a regular basis.
The point to the design is to appear like one is from such a harsh world; not that you drive a train or own a steam-powered refridgerator.

As for the drums, I'll have a sample up in a week or less. Piss and moan about it in that thread, would you?

I'm visiting someone out of town at the moment. I have limited internet access- up to an hour- at the library in Toronto, but I don't go every day, so typically by the time I'm done checking up on all the stuff I'm keenly interested in, I don't have time for passing fancies like this place. Here, though, I've got lots of time to bother you buggers.

I'm biomale, yeah. You can refer to me by whatever pronoun you prefer. I gave the cat ears (and tail) away awhile ago, got bored of them.
Usually when I see goths, cybergoths, or even rivetheads, their outfits are usually really well-kept and sleek and stuff, whereas I wanted to go for a more rags-and-patches feel.

It's definitely part of the whole Goth/Punk umbrella subculture, at any rate. J'm just always in favour of more detail over more simplification. J enjoy when there's exactly a word that perfectly encapsulates an exact concept.

Hi Kai! Glad to see you wandering back around here ;-)

I think, though, that I would have to differ on your categorization of your outfit as Steampunk. It appears to me, that it may fit much more in with Post-Apocalyptic Punk, Punk Grunge or something like that. Usually Steampunk tends to follow a older noir style, punked out. Think 1920's -1940's (EDIT: Actually I think 19th century, up to WW II may be a better swath of time) style of clothing, punked. Frock coats, waistcoats, vests, etc. and you can still make it patchy.

For inspiration, there are a lot of Anime (Steamboy, Steam Detectives, Nausicca, Howell's Moving Castle) and even Sky Captain & the World of Tomorrow that [edit:] may inspire the style.

Think 1920's -1940's style of clothing, punked. Frock coats, waistcoats, vests, etc. and you can still make it patchy.

For inspiration, there are a lot of Anime (Steamboy, Steam Detectives, Nausicca, Howell's Moving Castle) and even Sky Captain & the World of Tomorrow that cover the style.

See, Rat gets it, and he's what, 60 years old?

Okay, my turn.

Steampunk =/= yuo.

(http://blog.wired.com/photos/uncategorized/2007/04/16/empire_line.jpg) Steampunk.
(http://kaousuu.net/forgreatjustice/steam1.jpg) Steampunk.

Steam Punk is the name for a genre of science fiction fantasy that is set in a fictionalized version of 1800's Victorian England. Ask Richter, I've been contemplating an outfit for a while. And when I research a costuming style, it takes me MONTHS.

You = androgynous 4chan anonymous wearing Hot Topic fishnet with a gas mask.

Do not insult potentially incredible and amazing clothing styles that require a LOT of work with your high school punk fail. Kthx.

I had always used Steampunk in a post-apocalyptic context. Like, world's been nuked or something, now people are back to using steam power to run salvaged modern appliances and such.

and i see so much of this "steampunk" thing around here(although they just drop it in a "goth" or "industrial" category), it isnt anything new to me. no matter what, when you think youre doing something unique and new and being an individual... theres a whole group of people doing the exact same thing.

so..... chick or dude and are you the same person with the cat ear avatar (who i thought was a chick)

We've already established that yes, J did in fact have my wires crossed. J've had the game Fallout (perhaps erroneously) and the manga Trigun described to me as Steampunk, and J mistook the common desert/wasteland theme to be a tenet of the genre. Sufficient evidence has been presented to me ITT to realize my mistake.

PopeTom: J've only been on hormones for two months, give it another four and J'll be up to a nice, full B-cup. A year from now J'll be up to a C. Also; those people rock my socks. Also also; dibs on seconds.

you keep referring to yourself as J.

suu talks "brazen" when arguing with someone who is totally uninformed about a certain fashion genre.

it appears to me you55/45're measuring with two scales:

on the one hand you(1) keep deforming youro_O language in the most absurdist (to me) ways, yet fully expect us to pay attention to the message, not the packaging.

on the other hand, you should be a bit familiar with this board by now, that is afterall partly dedicated to a Goddess of Strife, yet y0*u throw a big fit when someone gives -you their opinion (yes opinion) in a packaging you don't like.

PS i'm not sure how long i can keep up this pronoun thing. how do i signify the second genitive case when referring to the sexless physical/emo male part in the future tense with the purple numeral subscript without also making a forward reference to the erotic passive female in the possessive case?
i mean, i wouldn't want to offend _you by addressing y.ou in the wrong way, of course.

but i'm not enough of a cunning linguist to pull this off, i'm afraid.

a friend of mine studies Finno-Ugric languages (Hungarian and Finnish), they have at least 23 different cases for pronouns, maybe she (just she) can help out here.

I'd group this as more or less "cyberpunk", rather than steampunk. I'd call fallout steampunk though, or a cross between cyberpunk and steampunk. In fallout a 50's theme is used with heavy technological advances. The world itself would be cyberpunk, but certain objects and cutscenes would definitely file under steampunk.

Anyway, your style of clothing resembles the way cyberpunks dress themselves. An example would be:

Heh. I was walking down a bridge once, and these two bike cops were coming in the opposite direction on the same side. I nodded at the first one (an excersize I find eases their unsteadiness at someone so freakishly dressed), although the second one stopped his bike.
"What's with the gas mask?" He asked.
I pulled it off my face and replied simply, "Air's not clean.", and then put it back on.
"Fair enough!" He proclaimed amusedly, and then the two of them biked off.

Dune as Steampunk?

Possibly.  The original book, holding a more geopolitical statement about underdeveloped areas and vital resources does invoke the Middle East.  For a novel classed as science fiction, the technology is almost surprisingly unobtrusive to the overall plot and storyline.  Space folding, nuclear weapons, and personal force fields do play a role, but are more employed as dues ex machina in such a way that they DE – emphasize the prevalence of high technology.  Arrakis, the desert world itself, is stated to be one of the more backwater worlds, limiting the technology that can be brought there, effectively making it a third world nation in the interstellar scene.  Finally, the desert, the ever present equalizer and complication, presents a harsh environ that limits and focuses Herbert's ideas for the book.  Several factors which give the work a certain aged, bygone feel, almost reminiscent of steampunk.

It's the future, where are all the effing lazors? Herbert doesn't let things go the light slinging Buck Rogers route in his book.  Nukes are (conveniently) banned in use as direct anti personnel weapons, and force fields are finicky and vulnerable to the desert environs.   Laser weapons exist, and are noted as quite the device, but are made excessively dangerous due to their explosive interactions with the shields that everyone seems to have.  Hereby, Herbert's take on personal armament and escalation effectively limit everyone to hand to hand weapons.  Projectile weapons are present, but a rarity, and considered archaic in several instances.  The emphasis comes down largely to guerilla tactics, advanced martial arts, and skill with a knife.  Almost promoting these things as values, not just necessities, one could easily mistake this for reading Heinlein!

The setting of the planet Arrakis as the isolated, harsh source of vital resources has been a worthwhile mirror and exploration of our own modern resource dependency.  Still, this out of the way area further gives the book a less – than – futuristic, and decidedly less – than – modern feel.  Sure, space travel is a normal part of life, but this setting is limited to the last stop on the line, as it were.  For its remoteness, and other plot factors, any visitor may as well have gotten off of a bus, as space capability does not further affect the plot directly.

In "Lawrence of Arabia", the titular character is once referred to as on of the "desert – loving English".  Frank Herbert, from his writing seems to fit the same mold, in that his depiction of the desert planet Arrakis stretches into a characterization.  The endless sands, brutal storms, and all – devouring sand worms make it an implacable force.  Fremen, the only people with the will to survive amongst its rigors, do so through unfailing frugality, shrewd risk taking, and extreme adaptation.  They see, as a reader is also lead to see, the desert and it's avatars (in form of the worms), as a purifying force, allowing only those who will work with its ways to survive, eliminating any weakness, and keeping only those who are careful in valuing only that which helps them.  While not obviously a steampunk trait, this harkening back to old time values, to a simpler, more accessible and carefully crafted way of life is in itself a central idea behind steampunk as a whole.

Overall, Herbert goes out of his way to paint "Dune" as a science fiction with the trappings and values of what many call an "older, simpler" time.  Deus ex machina giveth and taketh away, as technology is effectively negated from overriding the messages, and simplicity that become the books focus.  The environment promotes this further, making the stripping away of complicating factors complete and allowing conditions where even the book's equivalent of a world superpower is useless before those who adapt to their environment, and live focused entirely on their goals.  Though not directly imitating the steampunk genre in this, the ideas of the genre and of this work run parallel, both evoking conditions and places very different from our more generic, mass produced, and opulent modern life.  No scientist's clockwork monstrosities of hybrid locomotives run the land, but in it's ideas and messages, Dune does still well illustrates a certain romantic spirit cunningly worked in similar fashion, and evocative of the same emotions.  The good guys wear goggles too.

Androgyny is a term derived from the Greek words ανήρ (anér, meaning man) and γυνή (gyné, meaning woman)[1] that can refer to two concepts regarding the mixing of both male and female genders or having a lack of gender identification. The first is the mixing of masculine and feminine characteristics, be it the example of the loud fashion statements of David Bowie, Jeffree Star, Boy George, Marilyn Manson, Annie Lenox, and Visual Kei musicians, or the balance of "anima" and "animus" in Jungian psychoanalytic theory. The second is in describing something that is neither masculine nor feminine, for example the Hijras of India who are often described as "neither man nor woman" or angels which are often portrayed as genderless.

Hey hey, go fuck yourself. I'm sorry you're too stuck up and- as your 'friend' himself put it- High and Mighty (capital H, capital M) to get a fucking joke, but that doesn't mean you have to lash out at my gender identity. Ain't we in this together, brotha?

NOT MUCH YOU CAN DO WHEN I'M ON A KOOL-AID AND CAKE SUGAR HIGH. HOLY FUCK I FEEL ALIVE.

JUST WALKED UP TO THE STAGE WITH MY BURGER KING CROWN, BRIGHT WHITE BATHROBE, RUBBER BOOTS AND TOOK THE THRONE.

SORRY KEITH, ROBERTS RULES OF ORDER ARE NO LONGER IN EFFECT.

WHAT IS THAT MR. WEATHERBEE, YOU WANT YOUR MICROPHONE BACK? FIX YOUR COMB OVER AND MAYBE WE WILL TALK ABOUT YOUR ROLE IN THIS KINGDOM OF THE DEFF.

WHILE YOU FIFTEEN GUYS TRY AND FIGHT TO DANCE WITH THAT SLUT FROM ALGEBRA, I'LL BE HOLDING COURT ON STAGE, WOWING THE SERFS BY MAKING FAKE FINGERNAILS BY LETTING IN HOT CANDLE WAX DRY ON MY FINGERS.

ME = PAID $3.27 FOR A LITER OF MOUNTAIN DEW AND A 1LB BAG OF PEANUT BUTTER M&M'S.

YOU = $74.37 (WITHOUT TIP) FOR DINNER AT RED ROBIN'S FOR YOU AND YOU 3/10 DATE.

MRH,

My religion (CotSG) encourages not caring what other people think.  Even if they think you're a retard ("Act like a dumbshit, and they'll treat you as an equal").  Basically, I'm like Jesus, only hateful and bitter.

And all beer is shitty.  Especially that Molson crap.  I wouldn't cook brats with that shit.  Alcohol is the CoN's drug, anydamnway.

Oh, no, I don't like alcohol. I really dislike it, actually. Very seldom will I drink more than a half-pint a night, and even that's rare. I just really like the taste of some beers, Guinness included.

I'm totally with you on the whole not caring what other people think of me... However, *I* care what I think of me; and I like dressing/acting/being the things that I think are really cool. Hence the Road Warrior getup.

We thought it was actually gonna end bad, with Roger upset.

If the plan would have worked, I would have looked like an awesome troll for about two weeks, or until someone figured it out. But as it was, the doublecross troll turned into a failed doublecross troll, then into a doublebackcross troll, and well, I guess I'm not sure who was trolling who, or even if Kai and Roger set this whole thing up just to get me posting again.

In any case, good times. I hope you aren't upset at me Roger.

Needs moar crossbows.

And half of not caring what people think of you is learning to blend in.  After all, when someone has just tossed a balloon of skunk musk into the mayor's motorcade, are the goons going to start beating the mortal shit out of

1.  An off-duty cop with buzzed hair, button up shirt, shorts, and sensible shoes (me), or

2.  An extra from 2Pac's California Knows How to Party video (you)?

Thanks for the camoflauge, though.

I disagree; after all, if you don't care what other people think of you, it doesn't matter if you're dressed outlandishly or normally. As long as you're happy with yourself, and you're not causing anyone any harm, dress however pleases you most.

Because a certain filthy bastard from Maine can't figure out the software.

Hope that gets fixed soon. Not likely....

It was the reason for the huge slowdown, and was affecting the other sites using mysql on our server.

Hello,

I'm writing you about your database, pdtest. The database was causing
some severe

load on the mysql server, it seems from some very slow queries, which I

tried to fix but they are still taking way too long to finish.  Disabling
your "smf_log_search_results" table drops the load from 100 to 2 on the
mysql server, so unfortunately it is your database.
gonna upgrade to faster machine and hope it works then.

So far we've had a New England meetup, a Scottish meetup, I think for a trifecta we need to get Kaienne, AKK, AA, Lamanite, Laz, and MOC together.  You know, as a Sociological study/Sitcom.

Sorry.

Well, except for her being bigoted against Blacks.

But she has a right, every single black and brown person, past and present, and even a few time traveling ones from T3H FEWCHORE have raept her.

in all fairness, she not only said that she wouldn't sleep with black people, but that she wouldn't sleep with anyone who wasn't at least 15/16ths caucasian.

that means she hates Asians, Indians (both kinds), Hispanics, and Canadians as well.

*shrug* Aini is one of the people that got me through last summer, when I was working 40 hours a week, biking 14 miles a day to and from work, my back was at a constant level of pain (7-9 on a scale of 10) and when I wasn't working I felt broken. I was isolated (as weird as it may sound, being that I was in downtown Madison) with no people I new, no friends, and as far as IRL conversation went, the only person I really talked more than a few words to any day was my boss. Started talking to people on my cell alot. Michal, and my mom, think I talked to Felix a couple of times, and also aini.

So yeah, this tears me up a bit.

Err... who cares?

Aini has issues. So what? We all have issues. I think Aini often seems cool, weird and stuck with some bad mental programs, sure, but I'm weird and still beating off bad mental programs... I just don't talk about it that much here. BMW seems to have seen some aspect of Aini that many people didn't. As to the demons that she has to fight, who the fuck cares? If her bars are made of prejudice, that's a tough trip, but they're still just bars... like the ones many of us see in our own cells and hope to break free of, aren't they?

I agree with you, Rat.

But at the same time, numerous members of the board repeatedly asked Aini to stop posting completely off-topic posts about "HAI GUISE CHECK OUT MY SEX LIFE!" in threads that have nothing to do with it. It was, especially for the members of this board, generally done in a rather polite fashion, too. Despite the fact that it reached a point of a knee jerk reaction of disgust from seeing Aini's name come up as the most recent post in a thread (not because I'm grossed out by her sex life, but because I was JUST SO SICK of hearing about it) I did my best to ignore it and not comment because YES, it is her life and her choices and to each their own, etc.

But LMNO raises a valid point--she spends a lot of time flaunting things that people don't want her to flaunt, despite repeated requests to stop. So it shouldn't be shocking that people who haven't seen the side of her that BMW obviously has are having a hard time feeling sympathetic.

Again, at the end of the day, I agree with you--it's her life, her bars, her choices, etc. When she can stop making sure that we all know how much she loves kinky sex with girls, she's a good contributor to the board. I can't believe that she's the only female here who has been through shitty shit in regards to sex, or that none of the guys on this board have close female friends/family/etc who have been through shitty shit, so I don't think it's a lack of empathy on anyone's part. I think it's just that in a community, you get out what you put in--and she showed several times a lack of respect for the requests of members here, so they showed a lack of respect when she said something that wasn't liked. She and BMW have formed a bond distinctly different from that of her relationship with a large part of the rest of the forum, so their dynamic is different.

I don't know if this is coming out rationally at all. I'm going to stop there. I hope I somewhat got my point across?

Oh I quite agree, as I said... I don't ramble on about my personal issues here (for just that reason).

But, even that act which might be considered a call for attention is just another damned bar, no? Some of us don't have to be the center of attention, or we get the attention another way (TGGR's HATESHIT, or my posts like this maybe?).

I didn't mean for that last post to come out as accusatory or anything... I just find Internet forums to be a bad place to determine how useful or useless anyone is LOL.

My point being, that if perhaps Aini did talk about things other than the above to BMW, then the following applies:

1) Aini is capable of other subjects, and can be of some comfort in difficult times.

2) It is understandable why BMW would feel some sort of platonic bond with Aini.

Mayhaps you judge me too quickly, Rat?

Many people I know have despicable habits, opinions, or hygeine. That doesn't stop me from being friends with them, but it does force me to keep them at arm's length in many contexts.

Also, IIRC, aini never brought up PTSD. To be fair, it sounds more like something you're using to rationalize her recent racist explosion.

I could maybe understand PTSD to a certain degree.  But why does the PTSD lead to racial discrimination?  Why isn't she afraid of all men, instead of just black men?  I know I went through a time when I wasn't particularly fond of women after going through a bad breakup.  And it was with a redhead.  But I didn't choose to hate all red-heads, I chose to hate all women in general.  So I guess that's maybe where it doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

She has never claimed PTSD to my knowledge (I think I brought it up) and the specific thing about her attitude that makes her racist and not simply afraid is that she rationalizes it, rather than accepting that it is an irrational fear. She claims not to be racist, and presents a bunch of transparent rationalization to justify her racism.

PTSD or not, that is racism, and it's personally repugnant to me for obvious reasons. If she does have PTSD, and it results in an irrational fear of black men, her attitudes are still her responsibility. They may have a legitimate root, but that does not make them legitimate or rational.

With that combo of DNA, it's amazing your body hasn't just exploded....

English DNA:  Righto lads. Hate to be a nuisance, but I'm in charge now. Toodle Loo!

Scottish DNA:  Shut up yer radge cunt, sassenach!

Welsh DNA:  Hey boyo! [sings something in close harmony]

English DNA:  That's enough out of you taffy...and leave those sheep alone.

Scottish & Welsh DNA:  Let's team up and oust the English bastard!

English DNA:  Bugger. Next they'll be wanting their own parliaments.

Meanwhile....

Native DNA:  Who are you guys?

Black DNA:  We're Africans, brought here against our will. Who are you?

Native DNA:  We live here. In fact, we've always lived here.

Black DNA:  No offense, but if it wasn't for the slave ships, I doubt if we would've bothered to come look for you. It's too cold & rainy for one thing.

Native DNA:  No offense, but we didn't really expect to see black people...we thought everyone was red until the whites showed up.

Black DNA: So you've met the whites, then?

Native DNA: Yeah. Things started out ok, but then took a serious nose-dive once they'd figured out how to build viable settlements.

Black DNA: I'm not a fan.

Native DNA: Well, guess we'll see you 'round.

Black DNA: Yeah...I guess.

English/Welsh Scottish DNA: Shut up the pair of you, we're in charge!!

Evolutionary forces: So, how long do you think it'll be until they figure out that interbreeding among the different ethnicities strengthens the human gene pool by cancelling out hereditary diseases that are prevalent in their various populations? Ok....that's just crazy talk...sorry I brought it up....

Combined DNAs: SHUT UP!!

That's exactly what I mean by grunge in 1991...  :lulz:

1991 was when designers and news media caught onto the "grunge scene" and it started appearing as a fashion statement in department store windows. By then it had been around forever and everyone IN the "scene" was already over it.

I just think the traditionalist, nostaglist and craftsperson in me finds steampunk aesthetically pleasing on a deep level. The whole building of technology by hand and the skill required as opposed to the largely uniform machine assembly lines of today....its interesting and fullfilling things. I like making things, and I take pride in a project well done. I also like the look of brass, and minimalism, and I'm a bit old fashioned about some things.

I've never really been one to get into fashion stuff.  I kind of happened into the grunge thing by accident because in my neck of the woods it was already pretty common to wear flannel and denim, cause it is pretty comfortable and can keep one warm.  In fact, my non-professional/work attire probably still falls into that arbitrary genre.  Basically I'm all about anything I can get for cheap.  Maybe I can start a new fad.  Thriftpunk.   :D

Science =/= Science!

Still, the genre does have a creative aspect that goes beyond designing a better outfit or shitty poetry.  Sure, kids will paste gears on everything and wear goggles.  Hopefully other folks will read "Difference Engine" by Gibson, and get into the more technical side of things.

The fashion version of steampunk seems to be:

1. Victorian
2. Gears
3. Science
4. ???
5. PROFIT!

It's a nice aesthetic, really. And doomed to commercial exploitation.

I am going to start telling people that my interior decor theme is "Steampunk" and see what the reactions are.

The look is the reality of the thing, when you're talking about fashions.  It's not about science.  It's about science being cool.

And the person pretending to be Kai is a female (born male) transgen and the real Kai is a male (born fem) transgen?

Kai is Kai/BMW. Kai is a male who is pretty and feminine, which is often referred to as "transgender" because for some reason our lame-ass polarizing society has decided that you can't act or feel feminine unless you're "really" female and/or have something wrong with you. As far as I know, Kai doesn't really care which pronoun you use. I usually go with "he" just because it's biologically accurate and Kai is a biologist.

Kaienne is an attention-whoring douche. Kai is not a douche.

Kai and Kaienne collaborated on one post in this thread for trolling purposes. That is all.

Okay.
I'm in the habit of referring to people by the pronoun with which they most accuratly feel identifies them.  I believed Kai biologically female and *later* became aware of her transgen status. That's where the confusion started. All this time, I was kind of annoyed with myself bc over the internet, it's hard to get more than the dimmest picture of what someone feeeeels like (and her avatar is a scribble-girl holding an apple) so everytime I found myself saying "her," I was mentally kicking myself in the head the way one would for horribly mangling the pronunciation of someone's name except, I was pro-noun-ciating her identity. (There's an etymology roadtrip).

Now I don't have to feel guilty anymore for seeing Kai as the apple-girl! Yay!

That's a scribble of Kai. That's basically what he looks like.

If he prefers she, I'll gladly use it, but unless I missed something he doesn't necessarily identify as female and has never stated a preference, so probably either is fine. I don't think it's necessary to identify someone as "transgender" just because they have a dongle and identify as a pretty princess, or because they have a port and identify as a macho macho man. IMO it just creates another "other" category to pigeonhole people into, another "us" vs. "them". Besides, I personally dislike the inherent pathologizing of people who "act the wrong gender". As if it's a disorder.

If people want to put themselves in that pigeonhole, fine. I prefer the idea of defying a coercive society by insisting that it's OK and not a disorder if my son wants to wear dresses and be pretty and soft and sweet, or whatever other permutation of "gender" expression he is comfortable with, without social pressure to deny his biological reality.

All biological impracticality aside, I want to have your babies.

This raises an interesting topic for me since volunteering in the GLBT Activism community, I'd learned always to respect how a transgender identifies. There have been plenty of ladies who have to "Go native" for work and family to whom they aren't "out" and the rule of thumb there has always been "don't out them if you run into them in bio."

I have not had the challenge of integrating with someone truly androgynous and usually feel comfortable asking "how would you prefer I address you?" if I'm not sure but that's easier to do in person because you're usually in the situation where the lady or gentleman is in a social, sharing mood. On the internet, it's a little trickier because I feel it necessary to allow people the grace of relative anonymity and selective revelation. Even if they're posting publicly, if the main people with whom they're conversing are such that I can reasonably expect they have a closer relationship with each other, I don't assume I'm part of the conversation enough to pry. I have to gauge that a little longer.

I dated a man who liked to wear skirts and makeup because it was aesthetically pleasing to him but he very much identified as male. I totally get what you mean about that, BTW. I didn't want you to think it went over my head.

If someone says they are a woman or a man, I do not care what their parts are, because "man" and "woman" are essentially gender roles in our current dominant society. I have a lot of issues with the forcing of sex-tied gender, especially where it comes to the profitable consumer product of sex-reassignment and transgenderism, but if someone says "I am a man" or "I am a woman" I am not necessarily interested in whether that is because they are biologically male or female, whether I meet them online or in the flesh. Their preferred presentation is all I need to go on.

I will, however, call someone on attention-whoring via sex/gender issues. Talking about it in terms of processing the concepts when a person is struggling with living a life that is contrary to cultural indoctrination is not the same thing as attention-whoring, and unfortunately in some ways transgender is the new, more shocking bisexual for troubled kids who need attention. The thing that I find most distressing about it is that it is so relatively easy, and encouraged, for people to physically harm themselves in a socially-accepted new way that can have long-term deleterious effects on their physical well-being, in order to fit in with the newly pathologized condition of "transsexualism".

If I do go into epidemiology, it's likely that I will write about this, and I anticipate a huge pushback from the medical establishment, especially because the program I want into is at OHSU, which is a huge center for gender reassignment surgery in this region.
