Title: Injured crow
Post by: Faust on August 16, 2012, 08:25:38 PM
This is weirding me out. When I got home today there was crow sitting in our front garden. I think he might be injured because he isn't flying away even if you approach him.

When I was going to the shop he was still there so I threw some bread out to him. About five minutes ago he started tapping at the front door. I open the door and he just sits there looking at me.

If it is injured I suppose I could get a vet for it, do they collect injured animals? Would they even bother with an old crow?

The fact that it has knocked on the door reminded me of the Poe poem. But it makes him a crappy bird of ill omen when he doesn't run off when I open the door and he sits there looking at me making me feel guilty.

So feed him.  That could be a pretty unique pet.  Just think of the microbes alone!

It's possible that he's just a mooch.  Does he appear to be in any discomfort?

I mean, I have it on reliable authority that birds in your part of the world shamelessly approach scriveners.  Do you draw for a hobby?

He doesn't seem to be in discomfort but he's not flying off which makes me think his wing is injured plus we were having a really bad storm yesterday. I draw but its probably more to do with the fact that I'm a pushover. He knows he can get food out of me by making me feel sorry for him.

We've taken him in and put him in the garage, Its warm and dry and he seems happy enough perched on the barbecue, we've left him with some food and water. Wet bread and a handful of oats are OK for birds right?

That is an awesome video.

I'll get it some cat food tomorrow, the corvid site says crows with white feathers could have a calcium deficiency, this guy has two white feathers under his weak wing, might explain how he hurt it.

Everything does. You can get salmonella from touching a turtle.

They are carrion birds.

I made a joke about the Morrigan earlier, but there is a reason that crows (and ravens) are associated with the Goddess of War.

I heard european crows and ravens were carrion birds, but not american ones. At least I've never seen one picking at something dead, they mostly seem to get into corn and stuff.

I did see a raven at Flax Pond in Lynn picking at a discarded Quarter Pounder With Cheese. Maybe that DOES count as carrion.

They remember faces, and can communicate good or ill will toward someone to each other.

Nothing really worth worrying about; they aren't much of a vector animal. They can catch West Nile (poor guys are dying in droves of it in some areas) but it still requires mosquitoes to spread it.

There are some theories that crows are smarter than parrots... and Alex the African Grey tested somewhere in the neighborhood of a 6 year old human. The biggest issue they have is developing tests that a crow won't simply ignore or cheat on.

When Sjaantze (harbinger of distraction) used to work at the World Bird Sanctuary, they kept hearing weird whispers in one of the houses. They all joked about it being haunted, but turns out it was a couple pied crows that would talk to each other, unless someone was there, then they would whisper  :lulz:

It makes you wonder about dino intelligence. Maybe dinos would have had a civilization if not for that meteor. It seems that a certian level of human intelligence is not difficult. Though there does have to be some sort of mutational trend to a manipulating appendage.

Well, I have seen a claim, but no proof.  There's something about THINK FOR YOURSELF, SCHMUCK in the book, isn't there?  You are blindly accepting a claim by this Bebek fellow.  That doesn't seem like thinking for yourself.

Therefore you are not a Discordian.  QED.

Ive never read one bit of discordian literature.

Then you really can't be a Discordian, can you?  Yes, the book says "everyone is a pope", but that doesn't mean that "everyone is a Discordian".

I have it on good authority that there has only ever been ONE actual Discordian, and he burned all his notes right before the Feds carted him off to prison. So we'll never know what Discordianism really is. All we have to go on is an old book that's been copied and modified so many times it might as well be the Bible, and this forum, which as far as I can tell is about as Discordian as Country-Western is "music."

So far I haven't seen much Discordianism.  I have seen a bunch of cliquish insiders who shit on anyone new, because they're too cool for anyone who doesn't eat, drink, and breathe their personal opinions.  You guys suck.

I'm pretty certain Ted Bundy wasn't a Discordian.  He was, however, a fan of disco.  It's an easy mistake to make.

When Rogue Discordians Attack!  Isnt that the new NBC program?  They're going to show it after that "Stars Earn Stripes" program, or whatever it's called.

"Terror on the net.  An innocent user logs in to what seems to be a pleasant, everyday web forum.

Only, it's not."

"It was a horrifying experience," said Prototype Jesus (28, mother's basement).  "I totally didn't expect to be ambushed and assaulted in such a manner."

Alex, the African Grey knew colors, shapes, materials and the language to communicate them. One popular test for bird intelligence is to hang a nut from a string and see how long it takes the bird to get the nut. Various birds with varying levels of intelligence use different methods. One day, when running Alex through his various exercises, the instructor did this test.

She said "Alex, get the nut."
Alex replied "No, you get nut."
She said "Alex, get the nut."
He replied "No, you get nut."
She continued and finally Alex got agitated and said
"N-U-T Nut, You Get Nut."

They would also ask Alex before interviews if he was ready to talk with someone. One day Alex said "No" and he refused to perform any of the various things he'd learned. After that, it became a habit. If he said "No" then there would be no interview.

So, yeah I think he would have fit right in here at PD  :lulz:

Therefore you are not a Discordian.  QED.

Trust me, I think for myself schmuck.

Like I said, if you knew shit or weren't a butthurt returnee, you would know that. Sorry I pissed you off in the past. Except, you know, I'm probably not really sorry. Resurrect your butthurt and I'll tell you if I was out of line.

Ive never read one bit of discordian literature.

Then you really can't be a Discordian, can you?  Yes, the book says "everyone is a pope", but that doesn't mean that "everyone is a Discordian".

I see you have a totally good grasp on sarcasm.

ETA: You're excommunicated.

Then go elsewhere. Think for yourself, schmuck.

You don't want our circle jerk.

And they said this forum isn't "Discordian."

This thread WAS about how awesome Faust is until assface showed up.

And you know what, let's bring it back.

Faust. You're an awesome dude for caring about this crow. If I didn't already like you, I would now.

When I make it to Ireland next, hopefully under better circumstances, your first drink is on me.

Dog food, fruit, pasta, bread, cheese, boiled eggs and cooked meats.

Try to avoid salt, I've heard it's bad for birds.

Crows are smart as FUCK. I hope you keep him.  :)

ETA: OFUK, this one says cat food, not dog food. Ask the vet. http://www.corvidaid.org/care-guide/feeding/

This, I bet the fucker's smart enough to realize someone will feed him if he just goes door to door long enough.
This is entirely possible, we had a cat that would get fed at four different houses twice a day, she ended up obese.

You've become a friend of the crows, though.

They remember faces, and can communicate good or ill will toward someone to each other.

Fact. You're kind of like an honorary crow now.
And if they feel like fucking with somebody's shit, it'll be the guy down the road who took shots at them.

Oh I freely admit it. That's why I'm not embarrassed. It's just too funny to be embarrassing. Not only did you guys dupe me when I was at the Rosebud, but you continued it even when I got home.
