I guess it's easy to stigmatize all these kids of the post-grunge era, these kids that were born, most likely in the 90's. But attempting to make sense of this visceral aversion to them...
Its important to notice what message they convey aesthetically...
visually: a skull here and there... lots of pink and purple... some black clothing... black nails... sweatshirts with built in hoodies... big vans shoes... tight pants... a piercing/tattoo here and there, but nothing too extreme... stars (and how!)...
musically: washed down rock, with nubile squeamish to angry voices (never forget the horror of screamo)... pseudo avant-garde artsy crap here and there... (ill leave you all to do your own research on lyrics)
So ok, what im getting to here is... their whole aesthetical expression is in a sense antisocial, but not enough to get them into too much of a big problem (lets call it a step beyond skater), but enough to express that they arent "Mainstream"...
That's an expression of discontent.
But this discontent with how things run in the world.... their opposition, their battle cry is REGRESSION
The world isnt going the way you like it? Fuck it, im gonna drown myself in retro videogames and whine.
Do you all think that the typical emo MyspaceTM picture, taken in a bathroom, with one hand holding the camera... right above their head is merely a random posture taht just stuck?
No, my interpretation is that they idealize themselves as children without care, with their avoidant pathologies... if an adult took a picture of a child, wouldnt it be a "from above" point of view, just as that typical pose they use?
How about all those retarded pictures with chicks wearing ballet tutus? Are all your men such faggots that you women have to resort to the most extreme expression of your gender role to think of yourselves as women ?
I hope you all drown in an ocean of plushies, stars and tears
You all disgust me.
MIGHTY RAGE! BOO YAH!
On the other hand, whiny teenagers are nothing new.
Let's complain on the internet!
About people we don't like!
Come on, y'all! It'll be fun!
...
We got plushies!

I know im preaching to the choir.
Besides, i think its good to not just stay within the visceral spite, but go beyond and understand exactly why-this-thing-that-evokes-so-is-doing-so.
I had a fun time writing that.
I don't know any emo people. Are they a regional phenomena or something?

Well, given the fact that our "mexican culture" usually is what the waves bring from the gringo seas, and that movies arrive here 6-8 months after its released originally...
Who knows, maybe it was a current issue 5 years ago in the US of A but here its (PUN ALERT !)

You live in Calipornia, yes? They're here, too, but sort of mesh with the hipsters, sort of. Like a hipster and a mall goth had a bastard child with drama queen tendencies.
They are, however, far fewer now than they were five years ago, yes. I think the emo bashings in Mexico in 2008 (http://www.time.com/time/arts/article/0,8599,1725839,00.html) had something to do with it.
QuoteThe trio of long-haired teenagers grasped the plaza wall to shield their bodies as hundreds of youths kicked and punched them while filming the beating on cell phone cameras. "Kill the emos," shouted the assailants, who had organized over the Internet to launch the attack in Mexico's central city of Queretaro. After police eventually steamed in and made arrests, the bloody victims lay sobbing on the concrete waiting for ambulances while the mob ran through the nearby streets laughing and cheering.

Some people have categorized emos as if "a goth and a punk had a retarded child".
LMAO i had so forgotten about that. It was basicly a short lived alliance between goths and metal people to harass emos.
And btw, i used to live in that city when it happened. At least to me it was hilarious.

YUO KNAW YUIO WANTZ TWO!
My ex used to be in an emo band:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stars_of_Track_and_Field
I actually really liked them, and am pissed that I can't listen to them anymore because of THE RAGE.
The most annoying thing about emo isn't the kiddies who walk around dressing up like that, you'd have dumb kids doing it no matter what. The most annoying thing about it is the rest of the fucks walking around calling anything and everything emo.
Please splain somthing for me.
What's the diff between the Goths and the Emos? I knew some goths, when I lived in Georgia, and they seem alot like the Emos you mention. Is there a diff or were goths pre-Emo?
Goth stems from the 1980s punks and post-punks, and spiraled into it's own genre soon after. There are multiple sub-genres of Goth, so you can't really say what goth "is", but there's usually an attraction to black clothes, bad haircuts, depressing music, vampires, poetry, and absinthe. It was never very popular, save for a brief upsurge with Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails in the early 2000's.
Emo stems from 1990 hardcore and post-hardcore, and was marketed as its own genre by Hot Topic and MTV. I'm not as aware of that many sub-genres, but I'm sure there are. As far as I can tell, there's usually an attraction to black clothes, bad haircuts, mainstreamed "punk" music, poetry, and PBR. It has become extrememly popular, and marketed just as heavily as any other pop music.
So, there are similarities, but in general the sense is that Goths tend to be more counter-culture, while Emos are more commercial consumerist trend whores/fashion victims.

My opinion is that, there used to be more marked differences.
More on this later.
Goth = vampire wannabe
Emo = tragic hipster

that's so emo to say that.
in short,
emo is where you wear a lock of hair over your eye
the similarity with gothics is that they both make a big deal about being depressed and anxious and sad
as far as wannabe vampire goes, more like "interview with a vampire" and that vampire:masquerade RPG, in the sense that it's all very woe, eternal tormenting and Weltschmerz and stuff. however, in my experience (dating a goth for 1.5y), when they go all over the top with it, they don't exactly take themselves very serious anymore. except that probably some of them do.
also, for some reason, Goth music has its roots in 80s disco, such as Depeche Mode and New Order.

True. There are quite a lot of very silly goths, and most of them know they are being silly.

Well, I can see where you're going with that... New Order was grandfathered in because of Joy Divison, and Depeche Mode had songs like "Strangelove"... But neither are really "disco".

Well, from my experience in the dealings with gothlings...
ITS SUPPOSED to be something more than superficial, dramatic, snobbish fucktards.
But most just read and listen to music (or pretend to) that is the "cool thing" within that social circle... which i say defeats the supposed original idea of expression of individuality...

I've been meaning to respond to the OP for awhile because I disagree and agree on a lot of points. But as of right now I think it'll be better to just make a new rant fread that links to this one, because I think mine will be mostly going off on a tangent from this even if it starts related. Doing that immediately after this post.
Consider this a BUMP.
