I've done SCA (Heavy and rapier combat both) and LARP too, there's fun in all of it.     Whichever rules, system, props, etc, it'st still grown people pretending though. (still more fun than REALLY killing)

I generally treat SCA and similar things as training to kill people. Which is probably why I don't like LARPs.

I do LARP but only for fun and beating people up... role players take it too seriously for me.

I do both RP games (nero, madrigal) and pure foam combat games. I haven't made it out to a dagohir event with my friends yet but I run a foam sword tournament at Connecticon every year.

Dagorhir = YES.  You should find one asap and go.  ESPECIALLY since you're out east.

Obviously you haven't seen Amtgard. They are foam swords, many of them or puropsely light for speed.

I personally don't use light weapons, but they are safer as they are far less likely to break in a way that would injure.
