Two vast and trunkless legs of stone / 9
September 22, 2009, 04:35:18 PM
I went to see this movie, "9," with a few friends. It's a computer animated, fun film geared towards younger folk, and to my surprise, it contained a lot of Illuminati/Discordian references in it. For instance, the main villain was a robotic version of Leviathan from the Illuminatus. It was roughly triangular in shape with one giant red eye and out of each corner were two robotic "tentacles." It was simply called "The Machine" and it existed to make everything into robots. The number 5 also played a role in the ending sequence (I won't spoil it just in case any one wants to watch it). Both "The Machine" and the protagonists were made by the same person (very Hagbard Celine-ish). It also contained some other cool symbolism, like the character #1, who initially used a fear based doctrine to "protect" the others, was dressed in robes similar to the catholic pope, and in it's head piece was a coin that, ironically, in the end was used to cover the eyes of a fallen comrade as they sent him down the "river Styx."

I'm not sure how much of this was intended by the creators, and I was wondering if anyone else had seen this movie. If so, I'm curios to hear if anyone picked up on stuff that I would have missed.

Two vast and trunkless legs of stone / The Straw-Manifesto
September 15, 2009, 05:59:01 PM
I can't avoid it, so I might as well invite it. And have some fun, to boot.

This thread is a game.

The rules are simple. Everyone who posts here must quote (or partially quote, highlight, fix, etc...) and respond to the above poster's statement/assertion with an unrelated, insubstantial, and/or irrelevant rebuttal.

Any attempts to make an actual logical argument, or attempts to directly respond to a poster will result in disqualification from the game. Those who become disqualified may continue to post but will not be considered when determining the winner.

The winner will be determined in the year 2013. The winner will be randomly selected from any of the participants that survive the zombie apocalypse. If no zombie apocalypse occurs, whom ever made the last post wins.

Remember, no real arguments (there's plenty of them around on the other threads, so if it's a fight you're looking for, find or make another thread for it). And most importantly: have fun, be funny!

(or don't! Be miserable! Be a douche-bag! It's really up to you how you want to play!)

I have about 100 pages of a sci-fi comedy adventure novel, set in a post post-apocalyptic era. I'm desperately looking for good constructive criticism (no jokes or bull-shit, please), so I can figure out whether or not I'm wasting my time. If anyone is interested, let me know. Thanks.

Edit:If any of you guys have your own stuff that you need an opinion on, post it (or a link to it, or whatever) here and I'm sure one of us could help you out.

Discordian Recipes / Sweet and Painful Chicken
August 09, 2009, 10:46:51 PM
This is probably my favorite thing to cook. It was a friend of mines recipe that I ripped off and modified to make it good (her recipe called for ketchup, which I abhor, and it wasn't spicy at all. It didn't use chicken, either, so now that I think about it...). All measurements are approximated because I usually do it all by eye.

You'll need:

Approx. two pounds of boneless chicken tenders (really, anything works here. I've done this with kielbasa and even burgers).

Around a half of a large onion

Two handfuls of mushrooms

Two good sized jalapenos

One habenero

about 5-6 oz. of steak sauce

Two cups of brown sugar.

Chop up your chicken into bite size pieces and chop up your vegetables (except the habenero, we'll need that later) to the desired size. Essentially, you're just going to throw the whole mix into a pan with a little oil (I prefer a cast iron pan for a lot of reasons. Maybe I'll explain them someday) and let the whole thing sizzle for a bit. If you want to saute your mushrooms and onions first, go right ahead. When the whole mix seems to be about two-thirds finished, mince your habenero into oblivion, then add it with the steak sauce and brown sugar to the mix. At this point you may want to turn your heat down a bit or cover the whole thing and let everything get all sticky. You want the sauce to cook down by about half (or whenever it looks good to you).

This dish is tricky because it's very sweet at first, but as soon as you get comfortable, it kicks you in the lips. The habenero only adds little flavor, It's mainly there to spice the whole thing up, so if the jalapenos are hot enough for you, then you should skip the habenero. Additionally, feel free to experiment with whatever vegetables you like, the ones listed here are just what I like.

Enjoy! (Or don't. At this point I don't give a crap.)

Discordian Recipes / PBR gets the job done, but...
August 04, 2009, 06:53:13 PM
Being raised a punker, and being in a hardcore/punk/thrash/metal band, I am often seen drinking PBR (considering the "free beer tickets" usually only entitle me to tall PBR's or nasty 'Gansettes). While this is just good and fine, sometimes (all the time really, depending on cash flow) you need something that will send your taste buds into a tizzy. The following are some of my favorite beers, in no particular order.

Smuttynose IPA

Victory Hop Wollop

Maharajah Imperial IPA

Gordon's IPA(this stuff is amazing for a canned beer. Unfortunately it's fifteen bucks for a four pack)

Saranac High-Peaks Series Imperial IPA

Sierra Nevada Torpedo

Thirsty Dog Siberian Nights (this stout, mixed with the Smuttynose IPA, makes an awesome black and tan)

Simcoe IPA

Harpoon Leviathan Imperial IPA

Two vast and trunkless legs of stone / Dear World...
August 04, 2009, 05:49:30 PM
Dear World,

I am breaking up with you. Your bad attitude is something that I can bear even less than your lack of education. I'd like to be able to say "it's not you, it's me," but I can't, because it's definitely you. I feel that, no matter how I look at it, we're just going around in circles. I just hope our sun is old enough to understand. I used to look at you and be filled with wonder and amazement, but now all I can see is how used up you are. I can no longer watch as you whore yourself out to these parasites. I leave Thursday. Don't try to stop me.

Good luck,

Literate Chaotic / Was Douglas Adams a Discordian?
August 01, 2009, 06:58:29 PM
Let's speculate because he's dead and can't confirm/deny anything.

His "Trilogy" contained five books.

"Adams" has five letters.

He had an unhealthy belief (real or fictional) that dolphins were more intelligent than the general public (see: Illuminatus! Howard the dolphin).

Plus his sense of humor mirrors that of many "Discordians."

Anything else to add?

And the greatest gift I could receive from people that, to my knowledge, may not even actually exist, would be for you to go check out my writing on www.cautionmag.com and praise/criticize/insult it.

Principia Discussion / New guy over here...
July 29, 2009, 06:01:37 PM
Okay, so I recently discovered Discordianism and I am genuinely intrigued by all that it entails. However, I'm having a hard time figuring out what is required reading and what is simply suggested reading. I'm just about finished with the Illuminatus! Trilogy, but I came under the impression that these books are not regarded as significant sources of Discordian "doctrine." Also, reading on a computer really pisses me off and fucks up my back, so how much of the required reading comes printed on old fashioned paper? Thanks in advance. Unless you are a prick.
