I quit smoking today

i've been about a pack a day for the last 20 years (oh gawd)

i read alan carr's (sp?) "quit smoking the easy way" and was able to quit for about 6 hours - but, i didn't start reading it with the intention to quit.  just read it to see how the hell reading a book could possibly make someone quit smoking.  that first cig after the book was . . . a psychological experience . . .

tried to quit cold turkey many times and always caved on day 3,4 or 5

cutting down doesn't seem to work for me as the less i smoke the more i like it.

i did quit once for 7 months using chantix.  chantix made quitting super easy, but everything else about it fucking sucked and i would not do it again.  i took chantix for a total of 2 weeks.  1 week as a smoker and 1 week without.  i couldn't stand chantix any longer than that.  i had pretty annoying constipation and headaches for a couple months.  almost rear ending someone on my motorcycle in west virginia broke my resolve after that quit and it was a slow but steady decline after that.

however, the latest ad campaign on tv is starting to get to me and i'm thinking i should give it another go.

i'm considering trying wellbutrin.

my concern now is that my biggest issue with no nicotine is incredible crankiness and i spend a large chunk of time looking after 3 kids - ages 5, 6 and 7.  the 5 year old being autistic is a complicating factor.

i only smoke outside which should help come winter time.  feels pretty dumb to go huff down a cigarette when it's cold as fuck outside.

anybody have any experience with wellbutrin?  or any other suggestions for combatting severe irritability?

Have you considered e-cigs?  You'll still get your nicotine rush, but without the same kind of health side effects.

I have thought about e-cigs quite a bit.  I've used them in the past for situations where smoking is prohibited.  I've found they work good as a 'crutch' to go longer between real cigs, but I don't seem to get enough of a 'fix' from them and they make me want a real cig that much more.

I also don't think I'd have the willpower to stay completely on e-cigs were I to try to switch.

I *do* think that, had I bought an e-cig instead of that pack in west Virginia I might still be a nonsmoker today.

My experience with weaning or nicotine replacement has been that it keeps you addicted and prolongs the misery.

I love a nicotine buzz.  I smoke enough now that I don't get that buzz, but I know if I cut down, the buzz will come back.

To put it another way, I think e-cigs are like N/A Beer to an alcoholic

Buy a tobacco taste, and high nicotine. I used 24mgs, then 18. Now I'm down to twelve.
Worked for me at any rate.

I also enjoy vanilla custard taste, though. Because I'm a manly man.

I average one or two cigars or a pipe per month, and I usually enjoy it. I had a cigar yesterday though and I felt like sun-baked dog shit the rest of the day. And that's how I learned not to smoke on workout days.

+1 on e-cigs. Why give up nicotine? It's hard. Just get rid of the toxic carcinogenic way of eating it. It's worth spending a bit of cash on a decent one tho. The cheap disposable shit is cheap, disposable and also shit. Stump up some cash up front for a decent tank and the difference is night and day

Also nicotine gum and patches, if you're a hardened addict.

You're not going to go cold turkey.  Some people can...but not many.  Build to it, like Waffle suggested.

I spoke with my doctor about welbutrin today (I already had an appointment set up) and decided its worth trying e-cigs first before medication.

I'm about to work a fuckload of overtime (8 12 hr midnight shifts followed by 4 more 12 hr day shifts - with a 24 hr break after midnights to 'adjust') so I'm gonna stick with what works until that's over.

In the meantime - I'd appreciate some e-cig brand recommendations.  The ones I've tried were the disposable kind and they pretty much suck.

I've often thought I'd prefer an e-cig if it was more like a pipe.  The weight of them doesn't feel right if that makes sense.

Vaporisers seem like a good alternative to me.

I think I'm done with the phlegm and shortness of breath. There's a shop in my town that seems to have a good range.

More fruit and veg, yoga, socialising, less poison. I might be on the upswing  :argh!:

Kangertech are good, although I don't bother with their batteries, just use generics. Juice-wise my local store does a menthol called Airblast but juice is personal taste. Most stores have a sample section. Try before you buy.

I have an innokin iClear 30s tank. It's wonderful.

And I use a Vision SPinner 2 1600mAh battery.

I don't feel the buzz anymore except when I vape. Real cigs can only give so much, but with vapes you can go with to any nicotine level. Also the more high powered the vape the less nicotine you need to get the same buzz because it makes more vapor. Like on pen vape I need 30mg to get a high, but on my tank and box mod I just need 6

Since I have a couple disposable e-cigs in my drawer, I decided to try only e-cigs at home, real cigs at work for awhile.

Since I'm working such a long stretch of days in a row, I figured it would give me time to adjust to no real cigs at home before I have to adjust to no real cigs at all.

Of course I forgot about this when I first woke up, but its been a few hours now with no real cigs and not so bad.
