Well, just read more into it until you are happy...

'We' might eat up dada bullshit for other reasons,

~also~

Just 'cause this is a Discordian board doesn't mean 'we' don'teat up dada bullshit either.

Anyway, for the statement to have any truth, you'd have to assemble a group which would respond to 'we' which may cause you difficulty in the first place around here.

And for those around here who like the dada crap, please remember that:

Why should you give a flying fuck what this board eats up? Does the fact that Discordianism has actually evolved a bit in the 40+ years since it was crapped out of some hippies' brains make you want to cry and castrate yourself in mourning? Good riddance; we don't need your crybaby genes in OUR pool, thank you very much.

I don't really know how many universal statements can be applied to "we" on a discordian forum. I would assume that everybody having different beliefs about pretty much everything, discordianism itself included, is understood. Nevertheless, I've picked up on a little trick that I use when I am feeling down about things, a tactic which, as a matter of fact, I used just this evening when I woke up at ten o'clock, after a four hour nap, feeling groggy and a little pissed off about the two papers I have due tomorrow and a Monday deadline on a program which I really don't feel like writing:

First, I take a walk into the woods and find a nice, sturdy log. Then I wrote a little note that might look something like:

You have been logged.
Have a nice day.  :)

and attach it to the log, which I then place on the neighbor's door step, knock, and leave.
Somehow, this always makes me feel better.

It seems to me that there is some confusion with people trying to define Discordianism as a belief system when, in my mind, it serves more accurately as a name for a certain type of thought pattern. The common factor among all Discordians, regardless of whether you eat up dada bullshit or practice chaos magic or what have you, is that we all believe what we choose to believe because we choose to believe it, not because it's "good" or "right" to society or to anybody else. Ergo, two Discordians may have entirely different belief systems, but both will have chosen those systems on their own, by their own reasoning, and are likely to give them up in favor of new ones the moment maintaining the old ones becomes impractical.

Discordianism, I think, is not like other religions - you do not convert to Discordianism, but you are born a Discordian. Those crazy bastards who wrote the Principia Discordia weren't creating anything, they merely gave it a name.

you do not convert to Discordianism, but you are born a Discordian.

bit of a false dichotomy there, the nature/nurture one. Besides if discordianism is the way of thinking that you were born with i'm really impressed, cause most humans can't think until they are at least a year old(totally guessing at the exact time but you aren't born capable of thought).

People are capable of thought from before birth, but they're not really capable of philosophical thought.

I think a lot of people are Discordians before they discover Discordianism, but that's because they have learned and/or developed a philosophy that is essentially Discordian already, and then when they encounter Discordianism it feels "right" to them.

Discordians are forged in the fires of mental instability and militant subjectivism. Alcohol seems to help too.

cause most humans can't think until they are at least a year old(totally guessing at the exact time but you aren't born capable of thought).
I'd say that you are at least 20 years off there.

I've noticed this a lot too.  I find that when I read a lot of Discordian lit. that it feels like it's stuff I already "knew" but didn't "know" that I "knew".  If that makes sense.

People are capable of thought from before birth

[citation needed]

at least, depends on what you count as "thought", but until the first year, a person may go through a couple of false starts / "reboots", making whatever they thought before that pretty much irrelevant.

but this is not really the point of the argument, so never mind.

Not to get too theological here, but the addage "Everyone is a Discordian*, whether they know it or not" seems to imply that even if they don't know about Discordia, they will still behave according to Discordian principles: The Eristic/Aneristic Illusions, Law of Fives, etc.

if thinking at the level of dogs is enough to be a discordian then all mammals are discordians. Pffff kids and animals are no more discordians then they are jewish, wiccan or a banana-sandwich.

Besides if all humans are born with this thought pattern, then its not a certain type of thought pattern but THE thought pattern of mammals.

Newborn babies don't have any fewer brain cells than adults do; their brains grow because the cells themselves get larger. They have as much brain activity as adults do. They are thinking, just not in the same way we think because they lack language and experience. Comparing a human baby to a dog is really inaccurate.

For the record, *I* was not the person who said that everyone is born Discordian. I was just arguing that it makes no sense to declare that actual thought begins at the age of one.

actually they quickly have more braincells than adults after they get born, because the first part of learning stuff involves growing a lot of braincells and also killing a lot of them.

this wasn't, however, what we were talking about. amount of braincells has nothing to do with the ability of thought (there's people functioning and reasoning pretty well missing about 90% of their brains).

also, i wasn't comparing a baby to a dog. i was just saying that the only thing the experiment demonstrated is that a newborn baby has at least the cognitive abilities of a dog. that is, being able to learn through simple conditioning.
i was arguing that the experiment stated in the book you linked proves nothing about a baby being capable of thought or not. because simple conditioning is not thinking.
