"Discordians should stick apart."

                                          -some asshole

Do we all agree on everything?  No; of course not, and why should we?  How interesting would any conversation be if we all agreed with each other 100% all the time?  It would be like playing chess by yourself... ok for a little while, but eventually you start to notice that you always lead with the knight.

Disagreement is good, its healthy, but it seems to me that lately we (as a community) have been pouncing on each other over our disagreements, rather than using them to our advantage.  When it comes down to it, we all must agree on SOMEthing, or we sure as shit wouldn't be wasting so much of our time here with each other.  But, are there ways we can use our disagreements to our advantages?  I think so.  Some of us support communism, some socialism, some liberalism, some conservatism, some libertarianism and some support furries for whatever fucked-up twisted reasons.  These are good things.  Agreement promotes stagnation.  Agreement is preaching to the choir.

I know this is going to sound like a hippie-dippie love everyone solution, but could we not pool our disagreements and use them to our advantage when dealing with other sites?  If we were to storm somewhere like MW at this point, attacking from ALL sides (quite literally) I think we could shatter them.  If they have a head-in-the-sand conservative fucktard, we send in our hardest-nosed liberal and let them battle it out.  If they have some love-everyone hippie who wants nothing more than to sit in the mud and do acid, we send in our meanest libertarian to chew them a new one.  If they have a believe-everything type, we send in a skeptic, if they have a skeptic we send in a believer.

Why should our differences be detriments?  They are not.  They are our fucking strengths, and they always have been.

There are enough monkeys out there, why sit in here masturbating and flinging shit at each other?

YES.  THIS.

I have burned a few bridges I'd like to repair, myself.

Amen.

More than just attacking other sites, though...I wish we could talk through our disagreements here without so much mudslinging. It's not that we have to all come to some kind of agreement in the end, but it would be great to have more actual discussions that don't degenerate into shitting contests.

Hmm, if we were to take our disagreements on here and enact them together only on other sites, that might kill two birds with one stone

To be honest, sometimes I wish we could split topics to other messageboards.  I predict that if two people from here started arguing with each other on any other forum, everything would quickly implode.

Absolutely, I would love it if it was possible for us to discuss how we think and feel about different topics and respect each others differences of opinion.

How might we start?

If this last debacle has shown us anything, it's that we must make sure we are consistently going after ideas rather than people. We must also take care about identifying too strongly with any particular idea--for if you mistake an idea for yourself, you will defend it from attack as though it were you yourself under attack.

This is what I've been ranting about for weeks.

Yes. When we get too defensive we start making personal attacks, or pushing exactly the wrong button, continuing the cycle.

Backing our arguments up carefully without getting angry or vindictive makes a huge difference.

I have to get going for now, but will be back later.

And it's very true.

Someone said (I can't remember who) "If you get angry about a certain idea during an argument, its because you subconsciously know you hold that idea without proof to back it up", or something to that effect.  I found that happening to me a few times in that last discussion/argument.  It's something I am going to try to be very vigilant about in myself... if I feel the anger rising, rather than bite into it, I'm going to try to step back and question why I am getting angry.

Let's face it... if someone said to you "the sun is freezing cold."  you certainly wouldn't get angry over it.  I would probably laugh, feel the urge to pat the person on the head and send them on their way.

This is actually a great idea.
