Would be interested to hear what the parents who opposed the lawsuit have to say for themselves now.

Not sure how much competition any of those are to ning, but there they are for you to decide for yourself.

Also, have you seen this yet?

http://tacit.livejournal.com/325223.html

Another day, another massive computer hack attack
QuoteNing is a personal social networking site founded by the guy who started Netscape, Marc Andreessen. It basically lets you create your own mini MySpace or LiveJournal or whatever you like--a small social networking platform aimed at whatever niche you want. It's had a checkered past, and has struggled to make money; three days ago, Ning announced that it would become pay only and would cancel its free services. It also fired 40% of its staff.

But that's not the really interesting part.

The really interesting part is that it looks like all of Ning, with all the social networks and online forums it hosts, has been pwn3d from balls to bones.

A search for some of the exact words and phrases used by the virus redirectors on nashville.net, one of Ning's social networking sites, produces 1,060,000 results...and as near as I can tell, they are all on Ning.

Now, a conspiracy theorist might come up with all kinds of conspiracies to explain this--disgruntled employees, knowing what was coming, leaving the back door open; executives of a foundering company, desperate for cash, turning a blind eye to Russian malware writers; whatever. I suspect that the reality is what it always is--incompetence, someone asleep at the switch, management that doesn't appreciate security and doesn't want to pay for it...the same sorts of things that seem to be behind this sort of thing almost every time.

But if you use Ning, or you know someone who does, my advice is to leave.
Ugh.

We decided, as a business, that our best move would be to kill our free service to 2.3 million users and see how that goes down. See what that does for our image as a company. Also, at the same time, we are firing nearly half our staff.

Unfortunately, despite running a social networking site, we're not too good at making friends.

Oh, what's that? We're being hacked and used to distribute malware? Who has reason to wish us harm?
Ohnoes, halp we fail at internets business.

OP here. Disregard that, I'm #6.

You're right, Cain. That kind of shit isn't unexpected, so it appears that you posted this, expecting replies like that?
Did you plan ahead that you were going to get upset about it when it happened, too?

Yes, it was all secretly planned in advance.  A sociological experiment, and you did exactly what I expected.

So now I'm apparently trolling. Fuck this noise.
Yeah, that's pretty much what I said. I also basically insinuated that you don't deserve anything more than mittens and a tiny comment.
I probably said you were a dick in there somewhere, too. You can get butthurt about perceived accusations of trolling if you want, but it doesn't help your case against the suggestion that you are overreacting.
Point remains that you knew the responses to "people are too pedantic" would be lame attempts at ironically responding displaying the behaviours you criticised... You even acknowledged that this response was predictable. So you posted, with the knowledge that the responses would be like that, and then replied to those in a tone which, IMO, seems not only upset, but surprised. Whut? Fair enough, don't post if you don't want responses like that. Disappointing that we lose your rants, but an understandable reaction. It just doesn't seem that anyone is going to think you have any cause to be shocked by those responses... and getting upset further when you're told that just seems stupid.

Yeah, go on. Quote this and be upset that I called you stupid. Fucksake.

I don't know why I fucking bother.

HEY, ASSHOLES!   "Ironically" carrying out the actions I criticize isn't funny, smart, cute, intelligent or even vaugely unexpected any more.  It does, however, help convince me that between the pedants and terminally unoriginal, I shouldn't actually ever waste my time writing here.

So congratulations.  You just witnessed Cain's final rant.
I should/could have called this whole thread while I was reading the OP, which, btw, I thought was great.

Just seems strange to me, is all.

If you're going to let posts like that stop you from putting time into contributing here, that's a real shame, but understandable.
IMO, the rant pretty much sums up the issue, so there's not a lot I can see to contribute besides a "Yes, all of these things he is saying are accurate" and maybe some mittens.

So the real question is... how do we hijack this movement and change it from within?
Then we can hijack our other movement and change it from within. Like chinese whispers, but with the mission statement of an organisation. What will our final goal be?

Oh man, Daruko...
"You've trolled too much, and now you can't tell the difference."

Is "self-satisfaction" considered an ethical system?

If so, that's the one I use far more than any others.
This. Sometimes self-satisfaction is the feeling that I've done something which is beneficial to others. Sometimes it is screwing a motherfucker over. Seems to work okay.

Contemplating saving to favourites as "The thread that will never die" and BUMP.

If I choose to do something voluntary (that is, not vital to my existence) that makes a person I care about feel guilty and bad about themselves, how much responsibility do I have in causing their hurt feelings?

Also, what is the appropriate next action to be taken?
So we're clear... this voluntary action has positive consequences for you, yeah? Apart from the hurting someone else?
Because as it's put in the OP they choice could be just between hurting someone and not hurting them.

Like, you could voluntarily tell someone you care about that they are the reason you can't have nice things to hurt them. If you do take whatever action you're contemplating, are there positive results for you? If you don't do this thing, is it a big enough thing that it'll continue to remain in your mind as something you didn't do, though you wanted to, because of this person?

I didn't realise this thread was about a specific Enki issue, when I agreed with ECH.
If it's a battle between Cain and Enki, I'll change teams and agree that this thread is stupid.
Never mind teams, I'm just on the side of good discussion.
But if we don't divide into teams how do I know who to screech at?
