I think he misses the entire point.  Too bad, really.
This stuff is too funny, I'm glad of other belief systems to write my propaganda for me.  This would be a good article to provide instruction with- as a poor example of understanding.
LMNO is gonna love this:
QuoteWhat I have found is that this analogy is a an unenlightened one, for it tells of failure to achieve enlightenment, and you had better not try again. It touts freedom but does not deliver. It is no truth bringer or real enlightenment, and is instead a masturbatory thought process that leads in a circle, and this ends in conformity, and bondage.
I found it droll, to say the very least.
Too bad he totally missed the point, except where he says that it's a place to learn (in the end bit)...and I think he meant this subforum when he said that.
Someone should invite him back. Strange he decides not to say this in debate, but put it up on his own webpage without even telling us so we can give feedback.
Who wants the pussy's email addy?
He didn't even metion Valis.
For shame.
Please link any retorts, e-mails, or otherwise here. I would be interested in seeing how you guys respond to his article.

QuoteBreaking down walls is a good thing, but to find that behind every wall is another, is an idea that breads contempt, inadeqacy, and selfish behaviour, it is an idea that is a trick.

Can't see it yet. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place.
Whats really funny is he claims his site is to "explore the darker side of spirituality" and then claims the BIP is too dark.
Does that mean we win?

Dear n00b,
If you have visited the closertogod website, you may have encountered the site owner's inability to grasp the content of the BIP project....etc etc
Sounds like a plan.
Also, Laz didn't go, he just logged out and is still reading in here. Anyway, if he wants to write a piece, I'm sure me, LMNO and LHX could write a rebuttal between us.
I'd be glad to help out with that as well.
and if Laz is still reading, you should engage, not evade.

we need to start making rules around here for REAL
rule number 1:

2: everything needs to be voted on and/or agreed to by at least 6 out of 11 members
3: no observations are allowed to be made on the forum UNLESS they are whimsical and optimistic
3 b) all other observations need to be filtered thru the admin - moderator structure for review before they can be posted

Anything vaguely reminiscent of the Old Testament I suppose. I mean, thats the overall tone I tried to project with it, so something along those lines would be in keeping with that.
And another thread may be a good idea. Someone should c+p Laz's statement and then we can pick it apart here.

Cain, RWHN, I really like your rebuttals.
Thanks, I hope, if he reads them, he will not only read the rebuttals but also notice the variation amongst them. Because I think it is a great illustration of how un-rigid it is compared to how he constructed it in his mind.
Sadly though, it really seems that his whole point is to look at other ideas through the prism of one who has found "the" "Truth" and is merley dismissing all other points of view.
A person like that is hard to convince otherwise. Too many engrams.
btw, the rebuttals are fantastic.

Thanks guys, I've enjoyed reading the other explanations so far. Of course, any good ideas can also be chucked over to the explanation thread too, or be built on as part of later discussion.
And I've just transferred it to the blog. I hope Hoopla sees it there, I got the feeling he didn't like Laz much....
I know it was said already multiple times, but I have to say for myself
the rebuttals in that thread are masterful. Best explanations I have seen for the BIP metaphore yet, and in multiple points of view.
Update: I signed his guestbook with an invitation to discuss his assessment of our efforts. I also left my e-mail address so maybe we'll hear from Mr. Laz one way or another.

the idea of a sitcom in which a group of internet dwellers meet up to go on a road trip to beat up someone else they met online is probably the ultimate modern sit-com.
i say you pitch this to Warners and see what happens.
That would imply that the 'Net dwellers would have to put down the socks they were fucking and actually go out into the daylight.

most sit-coms have an element of unreality to them.
seinfeld: kramer does nothing and yet can afford to live in manhattan
friends: low paying jobs for much of the series and can afford to live in manhattan.
sex & the city: SJP writes ONE column a week and can afford to live and shop in manhattan.
So, you're saying this should take place in Manhattan, then.

if it adds to the unreality then, yes. :-D
of course, it'll be filmed on a backlot in california and library footage of manhattan will be intercut with the plot to make you think it's manhattan.
Barstools Across America
I'll write a fucking pilot.
That is actually a good idea.
I say pilot because you said show.
I imagine a one-shot.
How would it perpetuate? We drive around the country and set fire to furry temples?
I would think the interaction between 4 or 5 discordians in person would be enough, let alone them interacting with the generic public.
We'd never get in the car.
Every day, we'd sit in front of the computer (or, post at an internet cafe all together), posting how we're gonna get in the car & go get this guy, but we fall into squabbling, and never get around to it.
I imagine it would be talk heavy, and have a zen element to it.
We fuck with people so they see their own follies.
Better living through jakes.
It's still a good show. Maybe we get in the car in like season 10.
new genre: a sit com that does not have a single specific geographical location but instead, takes place over the internet.....but it's on TV.
8-)
Hmm, so we'd have the cliffhanger to end season 9, "Who's going to drive the car?..."

end of 8; season 9 is the fight over who will drive; season 10 is like 20 miles of driving.

Baby Mohamed, same face, just darken it, and in place of the crown of thorns, a turban. Just for continuity, a baby abraham, with a beard. Three floating baby heads in a bar laughing at the schmucks who take them too seriously. Then they get to arguing about who gets Tubgirl's soul, cause they're sick... oh so sick.

Has the pilot been written? Did you ever get in touch with Laz? Did hunter ever manage to interogate a HIMEOBS agent?
I read through all of this thread and I never did see Laz show his punk ass up.
I'm sorry if this was mentioned earlier in the thread, but can someone point out what the author's major errors were in his review of BIP?
http://www.principiadiscordia.com/forum/index.php?topic=11541.0
The major error (imo) is that he posted that review without any discussion about it.
If he thought it was so bleak and futile, or even badwrong, as he seemed to indicate, why didn't he discuss it with the writers, and see what could be done to improve it?
After all, I feel that the philosophy of the BIP is that its not the intention to herd everyone into a little box, and tell them there is no capacity to extend your horizons, but maybe others feel differently. Rather than post a pithy review warning people of dangerously cultish behaviour, wouldn't it make more sense to argue your case here?
Laz certainly had the opportunity to, and all it would have taken is a well made argument stating HIS opinion to at least make the BIP authers consider other ways of expressing the ideas in it.
Maybe that is a somewhat optimistic point of view of course, but I think the fact that he hid behind the cells of his own cell to criticise the people telling him he was in a cell in the first place makes me laugh.

I don't think he was "scared" off. Because, in fact, I think we were quite congenial with him. We kind of knew from our discussions with him that he wasn't quite getting it. However, at some point I imagine he decided he had gathered enough "intelligence" for his website. I'm sure he knew that if we ever found his site, (because he never mentioned it to us while he was here), that we'd take issue with his summary of the BIP. So, I think it was more of a matter that he was scared to come back and back up his take. In other words, I think he's pretty much a cowardly sockfucker.

It'll kind of suck when it's just your ticker stopping while sitting and they find you in a drool soaked robe.
You watch too many movies.

QuoteBreaking down walls is a good thing, but to find that behind every wall is another, is an idea that breads contempt, inadeqacy, and selfish behaviour, it is an idea that is a trick.
Its more like a Matryoshka doll.
He believes that in his lifetime he can attain the ultimate truth and perfect way to live, we can mock, but at least he has hope.
Funny someone should have said that almost five years ago...
I don't know about that guy, but if I were to take the piss out of the BIP in proper detail (something definitely on my rather long project list), I would go with: perhaps "attaining ultimate truth and perfect way to live" is not the only way to be outside your prison. Sufficient flexibility and playfulness is enough, you can still err... and anyway, you're only in prison if you choose to be. Unchoosing is a tricky business, and it is very probable that there will be times when you think you have unchosen when in fact you just rearranged your cell... but it's far from...
hopeless.
