Title: Half-page images
Post by: Q. G. Pennyworth on January 18, 2012, 05:21:50 PM
Here's one of the law of fives:
http://imgur.com/BFCwVpo
The parable of the bitter tea: (DINOSAURS ARE NOT KOPYLEFT)
http://imgur.com/GUxgVMR
And on occultism: (BACKGROUND IS NOT KOPYLEFT)
http://imgur.com/lFncKNm

Not embedded because it breaks the fuck out of your layout. If there's demand for it I can make lower-res copies for posting online, these are ginormous for printing purposes.

ETA: imageshack is dead, fuck those guys forever. Uploading to imgur and replacing links as I go.

MORE ETA: Most of these images were made before I gave two shits about copyright. I've gotten better, but the old work hasn't all been replaced with responsibly-sourced stuff yet. I'll do my best to include big warnings for the versions that are not kopyleft and replace what I can.

I'm assuming you linked to the print versions so we can distribute them as we see fit?

No problem, but could you list the names for me or perhaps edit your posts like so:

Name Goes Here
no attribution necessary

They will then look like this:

Name Goes Here (http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/8761/viralideas.jpg)
no attribution necessary (http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/5583/machinepage.jpg)

I'll add their names to their respective flyers.

This is probably LHX's work, right? Because, and this may be heresy, but I really think it could do with some capitalization and periods at the end of the sentences :)

I know it's LHXs style, but when it starts about "learning", it's kind of ironic to have the sentences all lowercase like that.

If you leave it, I'd at least add some spacing between the paragraphs cause it's just a bunch of letters from what it looks like at first, now.

Also, break the line at "by-products" so it doesn't go through the tree.

I'm just saying, because it's REALLY AWESOME and I'd love to print it out with those improvements :)

That font has no upper case or punctuation, if it's a real issue I can look for another font to use for that, or maybe use the gasmask font from the title for the first letters, but personally I'm happy where it is. That line break definitely needs to be fixed, though.

Stupid font!! :argh!:

No it's a great font in fact :) Maybe you can only use the heading font for the capitals? (and punctuation, though check if that doesnt look odd).

Convert them to outlines before exporting the PDF.

Or, flatten the image, depending on what program you're using.

Negatory.

Select all the boxes your type is in.

Go to Type > Create Outlines.

Export your PDF.

Save your InDesign file as "...Outlines" so you don't accidentally save over your editable type version.

Not in one fell swoop, I don't think.

But these keyboard shortcuts make the task quite quick, even for that many pages.

(command) + (A)

then

(command) + (shift) + (O)

for each page. Should only take a few minutes before all 86 pages are done.

If you do this, remember to save the InDesign file as "blah blah blah - outlines" because you can't convert type back into its editable form. I've saved over my original files before and had to rebuild them, see....

WHAT THIS IS NOT

In particular, there's a four page section that's nearly illegible that's based on some older mythology I was writing and I'm pretty self conscious about. Also, five pages tied up in reprinting the Subnormality comic "The Line" which I'm pretty positive is copyrighted all to hell. This was designed as a project for personal use, hence the flippant attitude towards intellectual property. If people want to use things in a more public way, please let me know which page you're considering so I can make sure everything's kosher.

or halal, whatever.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that Indesign has in the "Export to PDF" dialog box, or maybe in the "Export PDF Settings" (?) screen, an option that says to convert fonts (glyphs?) to outlines, or to convert just non-embeddable fonts to outlines even. So that you don't have to specify it for every text box. I'm pretty sure I always did that.

Alternatively, whether a font is embeddable or not, is a matter of ONE BIT in the .ttf or .otf or whatnot file. I once had some commandline ttf tweaking tool that could flip it. I forgot what it's called. It did mention that you should not do it if you were doing it in order to embed a font. But IMO it's kind of ridiculous how the "font" can not be embedded (because it's technically a piece of software for purposes of copyright) while its outlines can be embedded (because they're merely the output of this software), I know they can contain all sorts of complex kerning rules (though a LUT is hardly software IMO) but then it's pretty obvious most of QG's fonts do not :)

I have CS3 and haven't encountered it. You must have a shiny, new InDesign.

For a highly detailed geek-out about creating outlines and other typographic wankery involving InDesign, click here. (http://www.principiadiscordia.com/forum/index.php/topic,31627.0.html) I created a new thread in Techmology and Scientism so QG won't chomp my head off and slurp my guts out through my neck.

I've used several versions but I don't believe the newest one was newer than CS3. It's been a long time since I used InDesign so I could be wrong. All I know is that there were two entries in the File menu, one for actually exporting the PDF and another for configuring the settings to do so. I thought the option to convert to outlines was in the latter. But again, I could be wrong, or maybe thinking of some different similar option.

I gave away my hard copy of this over the vacation, so I need to go back and reprint anyway. I was thinking maybe I could go through and strip out all the bits that people aren't comfortable with going 100% broken copyright and properly releasing it into the wild (making sure not to stomp on BiP 2013 in the process, of course). Is that a thing people would be interested in, or should I just keep it a private thing?

This is amazing and awesome.

I started digging and found a bunch of things in the Principia Totalis, which is Kopyleft so that makes my life a lot easier.

Today I'm gonna be looking up Fair Use to see how many of the comic book quotes I can keep in there.

I did a this thing! http://i.imgur.com/iHuJWp1.jpg

It's a new design for the "I am choosing these socks" affirmation. I was kinda pissed off at the old version I had in the book, so it's completely different now! The act of creating the design was itself an important affirmation, as I spent way too long waffling back and forth between different ornamental options, which is where the idea for the background came in. I'll be dumping more of these as I clean up the document, which right now consists of a lot of stripping material that will never pass for kopyleft. Some of the substitutions are way better than the original stuff I went with, so here's hoping the final product is awesome in every way!

Yes.

Unsolicited advice: Since it is alone on the page, there is nothing to "flip over" when you get to it, there is no obvious "up" or "down" once it's printed out, and it has so much text that I suspect people may be deterred from even reading it to see what it says and find out whether they're interested in printing it. I am not even going to try.

Perhaps you presented it upside-down as a hint that it's meant to be posted upside-down. However, it's so text-heavy that even if it's posted somewhere people are relatively captive, such as the bathroom, I don't think most people will read it at all that way.

Half pages (and spreads like the last two) are being printed in book form, I just exported the image of how it looks in my editor. I can do a right-side-up version if folks want to see, but I figured since it's from Hoopla's Wise Book of Baloney folks here would probably already be familiar enough with the text itself.

Nope, these were all built at half page size, and that background was originally for another thing I made like a million years ago, so recreating it is out, too.

When I put out Holy Nonsense, would it make sense to do a second print file designed for A4 instead of the US letter size? It wouldn't be too much work on my end.

Depending on your printing options, there is a poster version that may be better suited to putting on walls. It's over in the Big Words thread somewhere, I can find a link if you want.

That might be a nice complement to "There is a Moon". Perhaps I'll put it in the other stairwell.

We just have an HP laser printer, no fancy stuff.

That's marvellous. I'm not sure if it's the font or the image that sells it the most. Probably a mix of the pair.

This one I'm not entirely sure about yet. I've been trying to find a place for the flowerhat guy for a while, not sure if this is going to be where he lands. Open to suggestions, no promise I'll actually follow any of them.

Excellent as usual.

I, for one, am extremely pleased with this page. The graphics, TGRR's great bad poetry, the whole package. I'm not saying you shouldn't change it if you think you have good changes in mind, but at the same time I personally don't think it needs changing. Kudos.

Bumped up the weight on the body text for the release on facebook, might make more changes later but for now it'll do.

I'm considering redoing a bunch of the big words posters as multi-page spreads. The posters don't display well on the online version, and they don't break in half well for print.

In other news no one gives a shit about, it's become clear in the last week that my work falls into two camps: Our Lady of Pragmatism and What Am We Anyway? If splits of these are useful or relevant let me know and I'll start sub files for both.

I think this is a great category.

Also, QG, if you do those half-page splits, I wanted to mention that you have likely Big-Wordsed enough assorted writing to put it together into a bang-up book. I don't know about you, but I think that the people need to hear the Bad News, and you have been studiously packaging it up into attractive bite-sized pieces for a couple-few years now.

It's weird looking at a project and realizing it might be your Life's Work.

I'll bump "Racism" to the top of the pile.

Not sure if this is an improvement from a legibility standpoint. The thin text on the background was bugging me, but I had to reduce the size, so it may be a wash.

I was tempted to cut the tractor ride line entirely. I think it reads okay now, but there's no way to make it more legible without abandoning the font or going to two pages. And I really want to keep this at one page.

That one's hard to read on my phone, but I want a full sized poster of it exactly as is for my new tiny chamber of existential despair that I reside in. On the bright side I have wifi access because I know the guys that run a business downstairs.

On the down side... best not to dwell on it.

I'm more worried that the top and the bottom of the last one don't match up style-wise.

I think the top statement could be bolder... thicker.. I don't have technical words. Like it is but more oomph.
