Within 35 days, I shall have posted a video revealing my TRUE FACE, and my words and thoughts on various issues, complaints, truths, fucks, shits, ikes, and other shit.

That is my promise. And you know what, I'm going to EXTEND this offer to all on these forums, veterans of PD and Passing Strangers alike. Show your TRUE FACE on the internet. I would say a good 90% of people here don't believe in a literal Eris. Some have metaphysical beliefs which would include things like magic, but they are in a significant minority. Mostly it's a series of metaphors and mindsets with which it is useful to look at the world, but, well, depending on how you're defining it, religion can be seen pretty much as that too. Except more wrong, because they didn't have Advanced Scientific Knowledge like we do now.

But - In my experience people don't approach religion itself as a series of metaphors and mindsets (even if that's all it boils down to) but rather as a dogma which is literally true and must be obeyed, but not understood. Serves me right for knowing so many Evangelicals.

Historically though, things were a bit more flexible. While denying the existence of God would get you branded crazy and perhaps burnt alive, so would taking every single sentence in your holy book of choice literally, like the Fundies do nowadays. Hence all the Talmudic scholars and Catholic philosophers and things. There was wiggle room for some creative intepretation, and looking at things less than entirely on a surface level.
Also, because the dominant religion(s) itself was less challenged in historical times (all challengers having being burnt alive), things like homosexuality, for example, were in some parts of the world treated as an amusing quirk more than as a heinous crime against God. The religious institutions were more secure, so proscribed behaviour was, paradoxically, more acceptable to said institutions.
But as religion gets challenged, especially in the modern world with its multiple choices and inconvenient facts and science and stuff, fundamentalism becomes a way of simplifying everything down. And that includes scripture. By allowing any sort of interpretation, you come back round to the current state of affairs, with liberal and scientists and theologians and liberal scientists and theologian liberal scientists ruining everything. It sets very clear boundaries of who is a Winner in God's Great Game and who is a Sinning Sodomite Loser Going to Hell, which facts and progress tend to make blurry.
The irony that fundamentalism actually undermines the traditional understanding of religion is amusing, but best not to point out to said fundamentalists. Not face to face, anyway.
I've been reading a book on fundamentalism lately, and it shows.

I saw a doc once (I know, I know... :lol: ) about those kids who shot themselves and blamed it on Judas Priest. The parents were yahoo shit, one boy's dad was bragging about how he stomped the kids ass for smoking weed. There was a scene where one of the moms was in her fundie church wondering if there was anything she could have done different, and the pastor was reassuring her that she did everything right, it was all the result of that satanic devil music.

I mean, the situation with pro wrestling is asymmetrical (the unsuspended-disbelief-state is the real real). For me, with Eris and that lot (the Tao, etc.) it is actually quite symmetrical. It wobbles, though.

You are correct that it's not a perfect 1 to 1 match here, but being of semi-intelligent white trash stock, wrestling is what I know and it's informed they way I look at a lot in American life. You have the worked (fake, storyline) aspect and you have the shoot (really for real) aspect. Things are very rarely just a work or a shoot - in fact things which have been works have misfired and become shoots, and things which have been shoots have become worked angles.
And you can disappear up your own ass trying to figure out the line of demarcation between the two - which in and of itself is a form of being worked.
I find that this applies to a lot of other horseshit in my life. My company, for example, comes up with different themes every year that were supposed to aspire to in our day to day, but they almost always boil down to "Make an assload of cash and convince our customers that our services are worth spending an assload of cash on us". In that case the specifics here are the work.

Of course it should also be noted that I have a huge mancrush on CM Punk when he's in heel mode , so anyone who can draw heat as a heel is greater than Jesus in my book. YMMV.

He was my first... My brother was watching a match that he was acting as a special ref for, back in WCCE, an "I quit" match... Can't remember who was fighting, just that both guys were bloody messes, and I remember the commentator talking about how both of the guys had been in serious, balls-to-the-wall grudges with Kerry, but both trusted him to ref the fight fairly. So, yeah, I missed out on that time, that would have been the early 90's.

Yeah, I knew even back then it was faked... I SAW the match where... fuck, what were their names... pair of brothers who were professional losers... They were on a card against a pair of big names in a tag-team match, and the guy in the ring managed to mis-time something, rammed himself head-first into the post (missed the turnbuckle completely), and knocked himself out cold, WAY across the ring from his partner.
The few seconds of the brothers staring at each other with, "oh, FUCK, we're supposed to LOSE" all over their faces blew it forever.

Well, there is a sense in which the term smark can be considered derogatory, which isn't what I intended.
You are correct that it's not a perfect 1 to 1 match here, but being of semi-intelligent white trash stock, wrestling is what I know and it's informed they way I look at a lot in American life. You have the worked (fake, storyline) aspect and you have the shoot (really for real) aspect. Things are very rarely just a work or a shoot - in fact things which have been works have misfired and become shoots, and things which have been shoots have become worked angles.
And you can disappear up your own ass trying to figure out the line of demarcation between the two - which in and of itself is a form of being worked.
I find that this applies to a lot of other horseshit in my life. My company, for example, comes up with different themes every year that were supposed to aspire to in our day to day, but they almost always boil down to "Make an assload of cash and convince our customers that our services are worth spending an assload of cash on us". In that case the specifics here are the work.
