Title: Volunteer Wanted to review the Etc. Discordia
Post by: Cramulus on August 20, 2008, 07:19:14 PM
I'm looking for one or two (at most) volunteers to read over our current draft of the Et Cetera Discordia and give me some feedback.

We've been working on this thing for so long I'm not sure I know what it looks like to outsiders anymore.

any takers?

How long is it and how long would one have to review it?

Right now the book is 80 pages. Most of it is graphics and nonsense, and you've already read a lot of it since you were at the Party at Limbo peak.

I'd love to get a review by the end of the week, hopefully, because I think we're getting towards the end of the editing process, and I'll need time to clean stuff up.

but there's no, like, "official due date" or anything.

I'll do it if you want.

I'm not certain I have the same mindset as the group who put it together, but I'll give it a go if you would like.

I'd love to take a gander and give my pedantic nitpicks, but can't get started until the Games Convention is over, and then won't get much done till I'm back from Israel (Sep. 2). Still, I'd be more than glad to do it if time weren't such an issue.

Spag's was, from 1934 to 2004, a discount department store on Route 9 in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. The store was considered an early pioneer of discount retailing and was notable for its longtime resistance to accepting charge cards (until 1992) and offering plastic shopping bags (late 1996) and shopping carts (introduced in 1998)

Somehow, it seems appropriate.

Did they have a bunch of scaliwag employees?
More importantly, have you listened to my song "Spag" that is conveniently located in my signature?
It's spagilicious!

There's a book. You'll have to take my word on that. We're working on our sixth draft. It's getting kind of large. However, we're not ready to release it yet. If we make our fifth draft public, you probably won't read the final version too closely. I've sent it to three volunteers who posted ITT - so far, none of them have gotten back to me.   :argh!:

The reason this is taking so long is because the thing kicks so much ass. Net really is a wizard of designomancy. Also, we're trying to find moar text to put in it, because we feel net's kickass design might be wasted if we strictly publish stuff we got from the Masquerade party. We'll be releasing this in print as well as PDF, so if you want a copy for your bookshelf as well as your hard drive, we'll have a relatively cheap version available.

If I was handed it to review I'd probably let it sit on my desk or hard drive for 2 or 3 weeks before cracking it open.  Then it's pretty much guaranteed that I'd consume it fairly quickly and love it, as I tend to all things Discordian, assuming this is discordian.

Those things would make me a bad reviewer.  You probably wouldn't get the criticism you want on the schedule you want, so I decline.  But I'll probably be fairly quick to read it when you make it generally available.

Funny you should mention that. I offered to review it (maybe last week, not quite 2-3 weeks), and only just got the review back to him today.

Assuming that the people with copies deliver their reviews, I think we've got enough reviews for the moment. I don't want to sneeze this book around too much in its unfinished state, because it'll decrease the chance of you spags reading it when it's done. ;-P

BTW, Midland , TX where I am currently located is the home town of "W".  I took a tour a few months back of the George W. Bush childhood home (he only lived here for a short while).

It just dawned on me what a great opportunity it would be to sneak some discordian literature into the W childhood home bookcases.  There were old Howedy-Doody coloring books, etc.

What do y'all think?

I doubt it.  Some in the living room, but not likely in the smaller ones--like the small addition (it had bookcases).  It is newly redone.  I bet I could slip an Eris coloring book in with the kids stuff without being detected.

We're in the semi-final stages, but the hardware hangup has halted our hard work. Basically --

-finalize one or two pieces
-finish introduction and outro
-replace a few graphics
-doodle in the margins
-print out the book and squint at it whilst sitting on the toilet
-send it to lulu.com
-distribute the PDF for free

we're actually quite close

I wouldn't agree with the hardware being the cause of the hang-up. That happened just a few weeks ago. It's going to be two months soon that I haven't had any participation on this project. If people didn't have the time because other things required their attention, they could have told me. But I've kind of been left out in the cold here.

By the way, the plans for the doodling in the margins is quite work intensive. It also isn't just in the margins, it involves interactions with the text body so the content must be finalized before that begins.

Also, the design files need to be rebuilt for production which also is a huge amount of work.

It has the appearance of being almost finished, but in terms of labor, it's about halfway.

ah - yes, the hardware is just one slice of the pie. But the lack of forward motion hasn't been intentional, it seems like stuff just quieted down a bit, then more intermittent, and now we're looking at a two month gap in hindsight. For my part, I've had a ton of IRL drama, fiasco, and stress that demanded the lion share of my energy. RAW was right - when your biosurvival gets threatened (in this case the threat of eviction), all your drives refocus.
