As an aside, I'm wondering just how much influence Dirty Harry, Martin Riggs, John McClane and an army of lookalikes had on informing the pro-cop sentiments. Hell, I'm wondering how much it bolstered the cop-cop mentality. Has there ever been a Hollywood cop who wasn't a sociopathic death machine?

Things can get better, but right now the glide path doesnt look very good. The truth is that its not just cops that think like the OP, its most of America. Sure, they hate seeing kids shot on the news too, but they dont grok the connection between those things. They dont get that you cant have an Orwellian military police force to protect us from those scary brown folks without this kind of shit happening. Its always been this way, we have always been beset on all sides by ruthless and cunning enemies that require us to "do what is necessary." If along the way we carve out a complete global hegemony and a big ol prison/military/security industrial complex, well thats just a happy little coincidence.

This is a pattern that repeats again and again, 9/10 times the lizards win. Because no matter how badly power is abused it only takes the smallest nudges to get the rubes to side with it. Even if every NASCAR fan in America was joined in condemnation of police abuses of power it would only be a few months before some crisis would have them begging for the police to have more power to abuse.

Americans want authoritarianism. Theres no way to fix that.

Everything is exactly the same.
