Quotemy voice sounds like Lemmy after a box of cigars.

Presumably there's also a downside?

I'm frustrated as fuck.  Mostly because Overlook Press apparently can't organise a piss up in a brewery, let alone releasing a book on its actual UK release date, along with its attendant Kindle title on the same day.  Oh no, they'd rather have none in stock, not know when they're going to get more in stock, and not release the Kindle version until the end of September.

As luck would have it, I managed to find a third party seller who had imported a bunch of the books from the US for the release date, and will probably have to wait another week before the book arrives.  And I can't even find pirate copies of it to download in the meantime.

But it's OK.  It's not like it's important or anything.  It's just The Great Ordeal.  It's not like the previous book ended on a series of WTFs and cliffhangers which has taken the best part of 3 years to be written.  Or that I can't even go to certain forums and sites any more for fear of seeing spoilers.  Nope.  Totally not annoyed by that at all.

I know his publishing schedule is glacial by comparison, but at least when George RR Martin releases a book, the Kindle version is out the same damn day.

That just sounds like shitty, shitty management. Sorta like the whole Niantic/Pokemon clusterfuck. Not that I fault them for their servers being unable to meet demand, but its so buggy that I have a really hard time believing that it spent a YEAR in beta. How many testers did they have? 3?

Niantic doesn't do testing. They also don't add servers to meet demand. When a feature starts overloading their five box z-80 cluster, they remove the feature. :argh!:

That is probably one of the better bits of news this week.

It's been a pretty shitty week.

I feel you.  I have a nook, and Amazon is putting the screws on.  Unless you're Stephen King or someone similar, you have to give Amazon a free 6 month exclusive, so I wait for damn near everything.

Urgh.  Yeah, Amazon are shits.

Funny story: when Dragon Age Inquisition was released, many PC players, including myself, had significant problems using a mouse and keyboard.

Turned out, the in-house beta testers all used console controllers during the beta-testing, and so had no idea how bad things were with a mouse and keyboard.  Bioware's a subdivision of the video games powerhouse that is EA, and Dragon Age Inquisition was in production for the best part of 4 years.  And not a single person, in all that time, thought to plug in a keyboard and mouse for the PC playing experience.

Don't even get me started on the trainwreck that are Bethesda games.  The unofficial Skyrim patch team are still hard at work, 5 years after the game was released.  I mean, one of the things they just recently fixed was a quest conflict whereby you couldn't start one of the game DLC, because the character required for it would be kidnapped and possibly killed.  Less critically, but no less ridiculous, would be things like being asked to intimidate the head of the Emperor's bodyguards in a fist-fight (even if he was dead), certain court wizards not actually knowing any spells at all, a faction being given heavy armour skill perks despite them all wearing light armour, and so on and so forth.

Wow. Remember when beta testing was actual beta testing? In-house beta testing is kind of an oxymoron.

Housewarming party tonight, this means I have to clean the house. Not that it's dirty, mind you, because I try to keep things pretty tidy. It's just that I have to do it, and vacuuming stairs is stupid as hell.

I suppose I mostly just need to make sure the downstairs bathroom has enough TP and soap, the kitchen smells like Swiffer, and the dining room table isn't covered with my loom and yarn anymore. Oh, and we were able to purchase fresh local salsa by the GALLON, at a normal grocery store, not just Costco.  :lulz: California has its perks.

So, last of the poking and prodding is done.

Not cancer, not popcorn lung, not emphysemia.  Nothing wrong with my lungs at all.  Apparently, I have managed to burn a hole in my epiglotis (sp?) with pure bile (despite Nexium).  Due to the local anesthetic they had me swallow for the tube, my voice sounds like Lemmy after a box of cigars.

But I shall survive to be a pest for some time yet.

Glad to hear it's nothing too serious (hopefully/theoretically - burning holes into your insides probably isn't the greatest thing either). But no cancer is always a good thing  :)
