Insert the words "that I respect" and I would agree with you. This makes things a bit more subjective, but it would probably seem a lot less shallow if I bothered to point out that I automatically have a moderate amount of respect for strangers, until they act in a fashion that causes them to lose my respect.

Therefore, I will hurt someones feelings if I think they deserve it (and I'm extremely objective here, opting not to hurt someones feellings even if I can... unless they treat other people poorly, or through ignorance cause people immediate harm.
