I was thinking of starting a wiki in a "choose your own adventure" style. If we publicized it as a GASM, we could even get a bunch of Discordians telling the same story.
Back in the Olden Times (circa 1996) there used to be a game called addventure, which was basically a choose-your-own-adventure wiki, located here: http://www.addventure.com/cgi-bin/read.pl/addventure/game1/game1.db3/page/1.html
Some of it was hilarious, some was awful, some deadended, but I spent dozens of hours navigating through, exploring it, and adding my own paths and storylines.
One of my complaints was that at parts, it just got weird. Or an editor would make 30 choices in his room, and then would only write out one or two of those paths. But in wiki format, where anyone can edit each other's posts, we could really fine tune it a bit.
I thought "There's gotta be other people on the web doing this", and did a cursory search. I found this wikia community http://cyoa.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page , which is about Choose Your Own Adventures, but also about creating them. I think it doesn't have enough people active to really make it work, though.
SO HOW IS THIS A GASM?
I view this as an opportunity to write a fun game that we can get outsiders to participate in, but also a way to subtly sneak our memes, jokes, and attitudes into some written output. Being a GASM, it'd be fun to see how big we could make it.
We'd need some volunteers to step up as moderator/administrators. Adminning a wiki is pretty easy - you've just gotta periodically check up on Recent Changes, and roll back any vandalism. And if you've never worked in wiki format, wikicode is only a little more complicated than BBCode (which we're all obviously familliar with). (actually, Chloe just learned wikicode and she thinks it's easier than posting on a forum)
SO WHAT IS THE STORY ABOUT?
Or rather - what does it start OUT about? It'll take off in its own directions once we've got some editors working on it. (that is - IF people think this is a cool idea and are willing to run with it and take ownership of it)
We might want to pick a theme for the story, like the Illuminati. Or if we want a short-term, hot-topic wiki, we could pick something topical like the Election 2008.
I think it starts off like any choose your own adventure novel. The main character, you, (a 9 or 10 year old boy) wake in the morning. AND THEN...
what do you guys think?
mittens in many colors, covered in furry little kittens!
ingenious idea!
I'm so in. I can moderate it, gladly. I know quite a bit of wikicode and I administrate a small wiki so it should be nothing new. I wouldn't do it alone, because I have some busy times ahead of me, but otherwise I can do it.
I'll also write some pages, of course.
I'd say Page 1 should be generally entirely banal, with some small strange detail leading to a couple of choices... Then the following pages can progressively go in all different directions. There needn't be a single comprehensive plot, as long as you don't cross-link different story lines too much. (It would be funny even if you *do*.)
I agree that the first page should be rather banal. I suggest the theme "First day of fifth grade" or something like that, as it'll anchor us around a theme, but still leave a lot of room for creativity. I think I'll be writing my first section about going outside and SWEET MERCIFUL FUCK, PTERODACTYLS!!!
What we need to get this launched:
- At least three moderators. So we need one more.
- According to the founders of wikipedia, to get a wiki kicked off properly, all you need is five people who are dedicated to it. If we lead by example, it's not hard to make other people see that there's stuff going on. (Luckily, the Choose Your Own Adventure format leads to a lot of lulz and possible creative directions). So we need at least five people to say HELL YEAH I'll write pages!
- We need some graphics. We need a banner, a logo (like the one at the top-left corner of any wiki), a sig image, and a splash page image. Any ideas?
I nobody more qualified volunteers for the gfx, I'll do them, but I'm totally out of practice and was never more than an amateur, and mediocre at that. Still, I *can* do those things, and make it look okay. It just won't look as good as some of the artists here could make it.
We also need a catchy title.
OSHI Awesome.
I'm in. Actual ideas forthcoming when I'm not on a conference call...
And here I thought my days (okay, months) at Uncyclopedia were wasted. Well, they were wasted, but at least I'm familiar with wikicode.
We should cross-link with Uncyclopedia and Encyclopedia Dramatics for extra lulz. I think we can set them up as special wikilinks, like Wikipedia has [wiktionary:..] links etc.

Anyways, I would be up for a bit writing, though the quality may be questionable.

Well, last I saw they had several CYOAs, some quite large, and only half of the endings involved being eaten by a Grue. Not that I ever really participated in those.
I could contribute some writing. Or I could help to edit writings. Whatever is useful.
drumroll please...............
Faust has set us up a wiki!
check it out:
http://www.principiadiscordia.com/Adventure
I think the working title is "Choose Your Own Misadventure" (unless someone suggests something cooler)
TO DO:
-we need graphics. We need a banner, a logo (like the one at the top-left corner of any wiki), a sig image, and a front page image. Any ideas?
-Are there any guidelines we should put in place before we get started? Like how to name new pages? How did they handle this at Uncyclopedia, Cainad?
-Cainad - in general - do you have any advice based on your experience with these things?
To be a sysop, should I sign up myself or will you guys sign me up?
Just sign up with the Create an Account link
we'll go from there
I don't know how it's been done elsewhere, but I think it would be most practical to name every page "Page #", thus making every page a discrete and unique entity. This would also allow "encyclopedic" entries to come alongside the story, for reference purposes and lulz.
Also, I'm in as verbatim. I'm editing around a little - if you think what I'm doing is crap, go ahead and edit/delete it. It's just ideas for the organizational aspects of getting this thing going.
Oh, and I think the wiki name parameter in localsettings.php should be shortened to CYOM or something... That name is used as the prefix for meta pages (like Wikipedia:.. links on the 'pedia) and it's currently too long to be practical for that. The guidelines page should be a meta page, really.
ATTN: FAUST
can you hook up good St. Verbatim over here with the ftp info? I've never tinkered around with these things, but it sounds like he has.
(That same parameter is what's shown in the browser title, by the way.)
Also, I can haz sysop?
http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Zork
Uncyclopedia's Zork uses a mahdjiqual template that makes it look like an old text adventure. It's surprisingly stable and well-constructed up to a certain point, thanks to a particular user named Zork Implementor L. This suggests, to me at least, that if we want to have something even remotely coherent, there needs to be at least one dedicated code-crunching monkey who can keep track of the paths, at least for the first dozen or so turns.
http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Game:Game
This one is more chaotic, and isn't bound by the conventions of a text adventure. This means it has a gazillion options, but nearly all of them putter out very quickly and lead to Page 86 (the "You are dead" page). If you're patient, you can follow a path of events pretty far, but the game has no end and I got kind of bored after making a few pages.
Generally, at Uncyc, making these things was a free-for-all. New ones would get started, turn into buckets of wikifail, and get deleted. Occasionally, groups of dedicated users would band together and put together a solid game (which, I think, is what we're going for here). One obvious potential problem is that the new paths will branch out very quickly, so I think it's important that those involved try to bulk up lower-level paths rather than creating one path that goes out for a zillion pages. Basically, when you create a new page/room/event, make sure there is a new page for each option you create. Seeing a redlink on a page is a total buzzkill.
With some clever writing and patience, I think this can turn out really well.
There should be some way to automate creating a game tree from the wiki. I've been meaning to practice more with Python; maybe I'll put together something.
I'll add new pages as I can.
Check out - Wiki talk page:
http://www.principiadiscordia.com/Adventure/index.php?title=Talk:Main_Page
Here's the idea: organize the wiki into 60-75 page stories. Each story should end roughly six steps after the beginning.
This will create managable story blocks which have definite endings and don't all just trail off into unwritten pages. We'll focus on each story until most of its endings are written. Then, as it slows down, we'll create a new story.
There's an emergent problem of how to name the pages. Because we don't want much crossover between stories. Two possible ideas:
- Each story has a page range. Story #2 is page 200-299, Story #3 is Page 300-399, etc
- Each story has a small letter suffix. So the pages in story #2 are Page 1b, Page 325b, Page 15b, etc
- Maybe it doesn't matter because people will eventually just be picking random page numbers like Page 023505. Accidental crossover between stories because it might actually be hilarious if several people accidentally linked to Page 23 without knowing it already existed.
Which is the most
intuitive?remember: total morons will be using the site. THIS MEANS YUO.
another option is for each story to use a different word for the pages. story 1 uses "page", story 2 could use "leaf" or "tablet" or whetever else is appropriate.
I find this or the 1b/1c system most robust, but the page range system most intuitive.

I'll see what I can do, at the moment the wiki is part of the principia log on so I don't really want to give that out to too many people, ill see what I can do.
Well, it looks as if there is a good start on this thing.
Where the story dead ends, could I just jump in and write the end, or do I need to know wikifu? I would like to help with this project, even if it means getting beat up by the fisharmed monster of doom.
Please fill me in on how it's done, or if you like I could just pm the bits of story to whoever is the wiki master. Thanks.
Oh, just make an account and jump right in. If you click on the Edit tab on a page, you'll see that wikicode is very very very simple. Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty and muck about in it.

Pages don't need numbers, just titles. So you could just link to The Red Pill or whatever. The purpose of the numbers in the original was so the reader could quickly find the target page; in a wiki, links do that.
If you wanted the classic feel, you could still have "..., turn to page The Rabbit Hole or however that works in wikicode. Actually, you could have ALL the options say "Turn to page 23." and just link to different places.
Exactly. You can have 20 links that say "page 11" but link to totally different things. Link text and displayed text can be different.
thought: if we use page numbers, we could actually order the pages and print these.
I don't know if we can even use this, but I was bored:
And I totally agree on actual page numbers re: printing.
(edit to show agreement)
Not to mention, if we use page numbers we don't have to waste our originality on the fucking page titles. Also, several different places might lead to the same page via different actions (especially with YOU LOSE pages). We would need to be pretty creative to not give away what the destination says, if we had to name the pages.
I vote for page numbers.
This is the awesomest thing ever! I can't believe I just now checked it out.
Ok. Page numbers for the display text. The actual link text should probably be title_page or some such.

Oooh, shiny. We are very much amused.
From the talk page:
QuoteI see your point. Okay, but we're clearly not ready to start hauling people in. The Main Page needs work, the Guidelines need work, and we need to decide precisely how we are going to manage page numbering. Once everything is set for rapid expansion, we plug this bitch like a bathtub in a thunderstorm. -Verbatim 15:52, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
is this still in effect? I was wondering if we could start advertising yet? I don't want to bring a bunch of spammers, but I do want to drum up some attention, cause this thing is great... Just let me know what you guys think. I won't link to it if it's not ready yet.
The place is wikistagnating. I say advertise the royal fuck out of it. Now.
I'm gona try to do some work on it, but we need more creative blood to flow.
or, just cut page 5 out and set it on fire
Page five is not a bad page, why ever would you wish to burn it?
Ok I'll post some links. Thanks.
we never tied it (page 5) in or made it go anywhere...
Cram, you are the cap'n of this boat. If you wanna delete page 5 it won't hurt my feelings. I can put my energy toward Chapter 2.
also, btw, see Logo.jpg if you can use it.
It just needs page 21 done and linked in to the rest of the story somewhere.
I would do it but my word processor is... uninstalled. I am a total failure at computerz or I would install the bastard my self, but as it is nearly all my writing has been put on hold till we get a ripped copy of MS Office XP or some shit. (Should get it (MS office XP) by this weekend.)
maybe. page 28 was a half-assed attempt to tie it in.
Well at least your page did not degenerate into a Pedofest. Someone took my well meaning nut job guy and made him into a sexual predator. I was all set to have the kid track down the Pterodactyl Handler on the whim of this psychotic weirdo, but... I guess Cram did the Pterodactyl Handler bit with the Wu-Tang clan and all, so it was no big loss.
Really if you want I can write more for page 21 as soon as I get my word processor back. It's a pain trying to write anything without it.
sorry I've been absent from the project.. Recently I itemized the list of projects I'm working on and there were 13 items on it. So I've been kind of tied up. I'd say keep page 5, let's just build off it, but New Authors: try to keep that thread it kind of narrow. (x-link threads to create a PLOT-BRAID) That way we won't end up with more than 16 or so pages to write.
I think the plan is to "finish" this book (or maybe 90% of the possible endings), and then start a new one.
Regarding advertising:
Yes, begin inviting people. But hold off on submitting stuff to digg and stumbleupon and whatever... we should think about that separately.
We could use more graphic media. And video media.
Regarding the site itself:
Everyone look at the first few pages - do you think we're ready for people to come in? Do we need more explanation? more graphics? more jokes? how can we encourage people (each other included) to participate, rather than just read? Is it good now?
Maybe if I stop dating entirely and pledge myself to a year of celibacy I'll have more time for CYOG fabulosity.
What happened to the pages linked to 23? I thought I read the treatment... something about Spags? no?
Edit: no that was page 17, my web fu is weak
I ahven't been using it because I can't read the text because there's a big fucking logo in the way.
Is it the "Choose Your Own Misadventure" logo?
please clarify how it obscures the text? 'cause it looks fine on my screen.

maybe spam it on a fiction writers forum or i dunno, people who'd be interested in both reading and participating?
funny thing,
I spent most of yesterday trying to promote CYOM, including writers.net, where I was flamed for spamming.
I posted it on 3 forums:
One devoted to My Dying Bride fans
One a political debate forum
and
the SJGames forums.
The MDB cats will be cool with it and participate.
I think the political folks will be cool with it too.
If anyone censors it or deletes it, it will be SJG.
That is fucking perfect.
And they say that PD.com is full of asshats.
Hey Cram,
Are you looking for more contributors?
yes, definitely!
and thanx much for spreading the Good Word
No Prob. I see a couple of nibbles so far. Hopefully it translates into writers and readers.
I went back and ran through a bunch of different CYO's and have been really pleased by the contributions! This thing has taken off!

I have no clue about wikification.
Thanks again.
uhhhhm
paging Cramulus ...
Cram: what's the easiest way for him to do this?
i would think there's two good ways, either
1) learn wikification, it's not that hard
2) or start your own thread in Bring & Brag and just post everything there to have it in one place (and someone else can upload it to the wiki)
If you have art you made for the wiki which you want to show us, you could post it in bring & brag, or in the Choose Your Own Misadventure thread, or both, or neither.
Learning wikification is really really easy. You can probably figure it out just by clicking on any of the edit pages and looking at the code. To create an image on the wiki, first you have to upload it. Click on "upload file" in the toolbox on the left.
Then, you post the image with the code
[image: filename.jpg]
you align it like this:
you fix the width like this:
you make it a thumbnail like this:
[image: filename.jpg|thumb|This is the caption text]
We try to keep the pics to under 300k or so, but don't be restrained by that if it's a really cool image.
Be bold and go have fun. Because each page only has a small chance of being hit, I'd really not sweat these images too hard. Don't spend too long crafting masterpieces that will be buried within the exponentially branching story. But DO be bold and have fun with it. We'd love to have a dedicated image-person who just improves the wiki by adding hilarious visual content. You really have an opportunity to deifine a lot of the visual jokes and style.
The wiki's felt a big stagnant recently, so I really encourage people to step up and make some new pages. Don't think of it as a task that we have to "finish this thing we started" or whatever. Do it because it really is quite fun once you get in the swing of it. After you've made a page or two, you'll be awesome at it. I had a LOT of fun making a lot of the pages there, and I think it shows.
Just be really ridiculous and think outside the spox.
fuck you my mom died of spox.
Major spanks for the helpings, but we're talking about the BIP wiki right?
It won't let me create an account. :argh!:
Meh, I'll work it out eventually.
I didn't feel that it was my place just to go in and edit things in there like that.
I think we can make something truly awesmashing. :fap:
Imma scrbblin.
nonono! We're talking about the ADVENTURE WIKI!

Okay, I'm back. Probably gonna still be a few days before I get into the wiki again. Awesome to see all this excitement around it.
I am very new to Choose Your Own Misadventure (ironically, I saw it advertised on another website). I love it, but so far have done very little there. I don't speak from any position of authority whatsoever. But as far as I can tell, book one, The First Day of Fifth Grade, is finished! That is, there doesn't appear to be any dead links, and all of the story lines seem to get to some sort of a conclusion. Obviously, editiing may and probably will continue.
Pope Hilde has suggested a second book, The Seven Seers of Solomon's Sewer, which has gotten cudos from Professor Cramulus and Cainad. You can see the discussion at http://www.principiadiscordia.com/Adventure/index.php?title=Main_Page (http://www.principiadiscordia.com/Adventure/index.php?title=Main_Page). It will probably begin very soon, maybe today. You might want to check it out!
I Stumble!d Upon this the other day. I died.

I've done a bit of structural tinkering over there. I put together a "metastory" bit, where you're wandering around a house, and that will link to our stories.
check out the Discussion Page on http://www.principiadiscordia.com/Adventure/index.php?title=Page_101 . Wandering around the house is sort of like blundering through a Table of Contents.
So to kick off the Seven Seers of Solomon's Sewer, pick a door, and begin writing from that point.

The house is cool. I think that's a great way to make it easy for people to begin new books.
The Seven Seers of Solomon's Sewer is linked from the house at http://www.principiadiscordia.com/Adventure/index.php?title=Page_123 (http://www.principiadiscordia.com/Adventure/index.php?title=Page_123) and begins at http://www.principiadiscordia.com/Adventure/index.php?title=Page_501 (http://www.principiadiscordia.com/Adventure/index.php?title=Page_501).
Wouldn't starting Book 2 om page 201 make a little more sense?
I think that level of organization is going to be very difficult to maintain. And it don't really matter anyway which page books start on.

I would have thought that too, but saw something somewhere about leaving more room for the house that links to all the stories. I guess if the site keeps expanding, 100 pages for the house might not be enough.
But all the pages for Book Two seem to be set for 501 to 599. Keeping the pages for a book together may make no difference to the reader, but I think it will make it much easier for the editors. A total of 32 pages for
The Seven Seers of Solomon's Sewer have been written so far.
I plan on submitting this to TotalFark later in the week (it'll get more hits if I do it on either Thursday or Friday). I doubt it will hit the main page but it will definitely be seen by 50-100 eyes. Anyone wanna suggest a witty/snarky headline for me to submit with it?
The something something that anyone can edit!
I should also add that if I use the phrase "Sweet Merciful Fuck" it will be turned into "Sweet Merciful Fark" by their word filter.
I have to honestly say that I think that this is one of the greatest ideas for anything ever. That or I just need to take a nap.
srsly though, awesome

This thing doesn't seem to be updated very regularly anymore...

actually there were about 5 new pages made last month, because someone stumble'd a particularly funny sequence where you're trying to use a urinal. We got a few hundred random users come through, but it seems they had trouble figuring out how to create new pages properly.
I agree, I wish there were more edits, but I don't have the time to make all of it myself! :p
And ProtectressofMexico just made a ton of edits. :lulz:

Bump.
I got directed to Principia Discordia by a friend recently, and principiadiscordia.com was the first site I found. Way to pick the eponymous domain name.
Anyway, I absolutely loved the entire wiki, and wrote a pretty long thread myself. There was an entire section left undone about two clicks in from page 101, right in the "main tree" of the story, so I went nuts. I can't get the images I linked to work though (they're of my girlfriend's cat, who plays a ferocious sphinx with poor grammar and a purple collar). I hope you guys don't have any hard and fast rules about LOLspeak, and if you do, I think you should revise your policy on hard and fast rules.
Unfortunately, it's some of the least vulgar fiction that a man has ever posted anonymously on the internet about his girlfriend's pussy.
I hope you enjoy my stuff at least half as much as I enjoyed yours.
awesome! Glad you had fun making it. That wiki doesn't get used nearly enough.
to upload a file, you need to make a login, then go to http://www.principiadiscordia.com/Adventure/index.php?title=Special:Upload
you can then insert the file into the page by going
You can align right with
You can make it a thumbnail with a caption like this:
And finally, you can resize like this: [[image:filename.jpg]|thumb|300px]
and if you want to use multiple tags, they can go in any order, but I think it needs to have |thumb or |frame or something in order to have a caption or resize. Try hitting Edit on other pages to check out the code. This is a lot of people's first venture into wikicode, so don't sweat it.
Anyway, welcome to PD - so far, you seem to be the sort of person who likes to dive in head first. You are in good company!
:lulz: yeah, green light!
Tangent Question:
have there been any novel-depth CYOA books?
the best results from google are CYOA for "adults", which returned these lols:
http://www.amazon.com/Adult-Choose-Your-Own-Adventure-Hooray/lm/C9EM4ISHD6RE
:lulz:
I don't think there are any that big. I have a small collection of CYOA books and they're pretty cool but they're all the same thickness. It would be a pretty tough project to write a 300 page serious CYOA book.
who said anything about serious?
Nobody I guess, I'd just be really impressed by a serious one.
BTW, I was reading about CYOA books and I found this:
QuoteOne book, Inside UFO 54-40, revolved around the search for a paradise that no one can actively reach; one of the pages in the book describes the player finding the paradise and living happily ever after, although none of the choices in the book led to that page. The ending could only be found by disregarding the rules and going through the book at random. Upon finding the ending, the reader is congratulated for realizing how to find paradise. Although it appears that this ending is not actually mistake but was actually designed that way, and thus makes the book into a Moral Story stating that if you think outside the box, and do not blindly follow the rules then you'll achieve Paradise.
Fucking awesome.
way cool! Got a link with that quote?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choose_Your_Own_Adventure#Format
so how are you doing this?
I've long considered taking the contents of CYOM and trying to turn it into a PDF... It would totally work, too. It's just a hassle to get all the data formatted right.
I think the easiest thing would be:
1. [optional] - change all the fonts to the COYA book fonts (posted somewhere ITT I think)
2. Create the whole book as a very large single page PDF. I think this could be done by making a new page which calls each other page, like this:
Page 1
<HR>
Page 2
<HR>
Page 3...
---click the "printable version" and it will trim out the TOC on the left and header stuff
----then print to PDF using Bullzip or some other PDF creating program
3. Use a cracked version of adobe to trim out the stuff you don't want
