Title: Weird people that you've met
Post by: Nephew Twiddleton on July 21, 2011, 08:10:55 PM
This guy's kind of a character. I used to run into him all the time when I was dating someone from South Boston. He never acknowledged her though, even if she as sitting next to me. Started talking to me when I was wearing a Led Zeppelin shirt. I randomly remembered him just now, and figured I would start this thread.

I've met Laurence Gardner (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laurence_Gardner) before.

He had insanity gleaming through his eyes.  Talking about monoatomic gold, the Ark of the Convenant and immortality at the time did not help.

A fantastic element whose main feature is the ability to make people's money disappear from their bank accounts (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/archive/index.php/t-469594.html).

I met this strange cat down in CT while leaving a wine tasting.  It was super hot outside and he'd just walked like three miles to say what's up.

Actually, I was attempting to acquire cigarettes. And I could have too, if the terrain was flatter.

Oh!

When I was in Switzerland, in the little mountain village I worked in, I went for a walk on a well known nature trail, which led to a point where you could view Lake Geneva and, on a clear day, over into France.  It's a popular walk for visitors to the area and for locals to go on runs through.

Anyway, one day, I was walking through the area with Blonde American Teacher, when, in the most wooded part of the trail, just a few metres off from the road and up the mountain, was a guy in a robe and cowl.  The material looked leathery, though I couldn't be sure, given the shadows in that area.  He also had two large German shepherds on leads, on either side of him.  He just stood there, looking at us for several seconds, then turned around and walked up the mountain.

Myself and Blonde American Teacher then decided a walk wasn't as good an idea as it first sounded, and instead we'd go to a busy bar.

We never did find out what was up with that.

I was having lunch with a friend, his boyfriend at the time, and some other people a couple years ago, and boyfriend and his friend Red are two of the weirdest people I know. Red was a tad bit late meeting up with us and apparently had new glasses. Boyfriend wanted to see them and somehow, they ended up communing with his chin in her eye for a good thirty seconds. I still don't understand it.

I have a friend  and he and I are very close we often are thinking the same things at the same time and we finish each others sentences n stuff.

So this one day we are walking across a 4 lane busy street and there is this schizophrenic crazy dude on the median just going to town spouting flow of consciousness hackery as we are standing on the median waiting for on coming traffic to pass this guy is 3 feet away from us shouting out at us what we were just talking and thinking about minutes before we even saw him.

So me n phil look at each other knowingly but amazed and I said to him just to make sure. Is this guy saying what we are thinking? and he busts out laughing and runs away.

Since then I've had this very very strange connection with crazy homeless people.

More than several times I have handed some crazy person a few bucks and they flat out say "Thank you Bill."

Like they know me!  Its really fkn weird :)

One time one actually tracked me down from several blocks away and he ran up to me crying and asked me to please take the money back because you are too good of a person to take your money and use it for what I'm going to use it for.

Life is fkn weird.

No, actually.  I personally find that blundering along head first1 works for me2.

1  I should know, I've used it to get married 4 times, twice to the same woman.
2  Also, being a prick.

Heh, that reminds me.

My ex-wife used to drag me to the Paris Theatre (http://raysparistheatre.com/main.html) in PDX, back when they were doing goth dance nights.

So, while I'm chatting up some goth kid who is obviously tripping balls and has handed me a small kid's pail full of glow in the dark chalk, I notice a figure dancing over by the stage. Now, this is your classic "all the seats have been taken out" theatre, with a little stage that is camped out by a clique of goths, some of whom stomp-'dance' back and forth across the stage if the current song moves them. The goth kid who was talking with me and sharing his chalk was a happy fellow. Wanted to 'brighten up the place'. I started drawing all sort of occult symbols, and sketching a large Cthulhu, which he _loved_ (I don't think he realized who he was giving the chalk to).

There are a group of people not comfortable enough to get up onstage (in the Clique's space) dancing in front of the stage. There's a non-alcoholic bar off to the left near the exit. My ex was a lush, so she had smuggled in some wine. Nearly half the crowd had the same idea.

Wait, that figure over there by the stage. That one I mentioned. HE DOESN'T FIT. I take a better look, and see...

A 60+ year old man, silvering thinning hair, wearing a glow in the dark Aloha shirt, kahki short, flip-flops and freaking SUNGLASSES around his neck. Grinning like a leprechaun.

Dude looked like he stepped off of the Whale Watching tour at Kailua-Kona pier. And yet, he ruled the room. Dancing in his shuffling way (the flip-flop, y'see) to the GOTH music, grinning like he was on LSD (not touching that bet with a 10 ft pole). I watched, fascinated. He lingered in every corner of the auditorium, chatting politely with the dancing gothic kids. Then he got on stage, dancing his little dance. Totally shut down the stomp-dancing goth boys... they were too embarrassed to dance on stage with him.

Then the 'spooky pretty' girl, the one who HADN'T danced to any of the songs that evening, got up, danced with him for a little while, and then they chilled and talked between the song break.

Dude met every single person in the club.

I TOTALLY didn't expect that that evening.

I didn't actually meet this person, but it's still one of my "Life's WEIRDEST Experiences"!!

Years ago, my first husband, myself and another couple were driving south on Highway 75 from Ft. Myers back to Naples.  Now this is your typical highway and does not run thru any part of the city at this point.  Up ahead we see what looks like an abandoned lazyboy chari on the side of the road.  As we get closer we realized someone was sitting in the chair.

We all laughed and thought it might have fallen off a truck, even if it was 3 in the morning.  Our curiousity got the better of us and at the very next exit we turned around.  We saw the guy as we went past heading North.  We got to a turnaround in the median and turned around a couple hundred yards past the guy.  When we got to where he had been he was gone and so was the chair.

Now no cars had passed us after we had turned around at the exit....

No he was just sitting in the chair.  I mean it was 3 in the morning and dark, which was another reason we turned around, to make sure we weren't seeing things.  He was there when we drove back by, then just gone.

Dude that's awesome!

AGREED!

I have met some durned weirdos in my day, but the weirdest encounter with them was the drunken bumfight I was party to over two humping dogs in that train station in France (I think the station was Bordeaux) all those years ago.

My friend and I had pulled an all-nighter in St Tropez and slept on the beach, almost didn't catch our train heading northwest to Madrid.  We got to one of the stops along the way where we switched at the border and it was around 10 pm.  The whole town was shut down, so we got a couple of candy bars from the machine on the platform and just waited it out with some German girls and Italian boys.  Along come two dogs, a girl dog whining with her tail between her legs and a boy dog humping her like mad when he could stop her.  Along comes another male dog and they start snarling over her.  We're shooing the dogs away, here comes a drunken bum to take his female dog, and another drunken bum comes to fight him over her.  We take off running for the train station security, and my friend and I find these fuckers watching soccer and drinking beer in a back office upstairs.  We had yelled to them while they were doing their rounds earlier over the dogs, but they smiled/laughed and kept walking.  Once the fighting broke out, we had to get them down to solve it because it was dog jizz and bum's spilled blood all over our luggage for chrissakes.

They come down, yell at us that they know "how you Ahmaireecanz leev, you are used to ze veeohlawnss, so vut duz eet mattair eef you see a leetle? Zey weel not 'arm you, so let us be, you crazy Ahmaireecanz!"  Eh, we let them go back to their beer and soccer after telling them they were good for nothing assholes.

Meanwhile, the bumfight had broken up, and the one guy with the female in heat kept trying to dry hump my friend.  And then low and behold, two other guys (not bums, but not all that prepossessing, either) walked up with sticks and beat the HELL out of the male dogs, dragging them away.

Once our train came, we found out it was a wagon-lit, and we'd all been sold the wrong ticket (this included the German girls and the Italian boys), as we had couchette tickets.  The next train didn't arrive until around 4 or 5 in the morning.  We slept on mail trucks left on the platform until the mail trains came through to collect them.  :lulz:

THAT was quite a night.

Some of the weirdest people I've run into have been winos. Cheap wine seems to fry people worse than whiskey. One time, there was a wino on a bench at the East India mall in Salem. He had a big crucifix and he was blessing the people walking by. They were horrified.  :lulz:

We had two winos back in my hometown called Doug and Al. One night the cops had to get them off the interstate because they were directing traffic, but I didn't get to see that.
