Or Kill Me / Re: I'm No Discordian
March 04, 2011, 04:49:36 AM
Discordianism reminds me to question myself.  Most other avenues of thought are self-validating.  Wanna become a super-Christian?  You can have as much Faith as the little Baby Jesus - just say you Believe.  Say it!  Lifetime guarantee.  Pay nothing now.  Low payments.  Low maintenance.  Look cool.  Feel gooood.

But being a Discordian is work.  The entry requirements are high and it takes a lot of effort to keep up.. questioning yourself regularly is painful, but necessary.  Introspection don't come cheap.  There's no comforting Faith either, just cold iron bars.

Put like that, it's hardly a choice really is it?

So why do we keep carrying the flag?  Some people can learn to un-see.  Or at least they pretend to while it drives them just a little further bit crazy as the years fly by.  I don't want to un-see though.  The truth ain't pretty, but it's the only thing worth having.

Dammit, Toronto is just where I was thinking I might like to go.

Just don't listen to Hoopla.  He actually did give me directions going down one of the back alleys.  I was attacked by a raccoon.  Now I can't prove that he has wildlife-controlling mind-rays.  But it's a safe bet.

RPG Ghetto / Re: The Game of Games
March 03, 2011, 09:03:15 PM
Not trying to yank everything in another direction and make it more complex, but the OP inspired this thought:

In each dimension, you've got two opposing directions/motivations.

Game dimension:
Meat: Focus on what is "really" going on here-and-now
Meta: Focus on the meta-characters reality, where "this" reality is the game

Group dimension:
Team: Focus on everybody getting lots of points
At Em: Focus on no-one else getting many points

Individual dimension:
Tame: Focus on doing as little as possible - blending into background
At Me: Focus on being the center of attention

So each player picks a blue card at random with one of those six directions.  And each character also picks a red card at random - again - with one of those six motivations.

As a player then you may be focussed on blending into the background, while your character is trying to focus on nobody getting many points.  You'd have to balance those motivations.  For example if you were to get confused and mix those motivations in the same dimension, then whichever player or character held the "meat" motivation could score a point.

To score a point, you say "point" or "my character says point" - without saying why or where you think a point should be awarded, and the other players have to decide what, if any, points should be awarded under which category.  E.g. a 2x6 grid with tallies would be sufficient for the players.  The meta-characters get points based upon what the meat-players do.  The eventual winner is decided when the cards are revealed.

Game-time around 10x real-time.  So if the characters all agree it'd be fun to watch a movie then it'd take about 9 minutes.

Awesome work.  I find it especially fascinating to see the intermediate steps!

Honestly, it might simply be a reference guide.

"I've got an idea... Who would be into where I want to take it?"
:checks chart:
"Ok, I'm gonna PM Cram, Richter, and Jenne."

I think that'd be pretty neat.

I'm going to clearly state my goals, and then I'm going to ask you to state yours, if you have any (And not everyone does, after all...To some, this is just a rather interesting social group).  Then we can discuss where these goals meet, and what we can do to accomplish them, having learned from past mistakes.  You know, like a biped ought to do.

I think I caused some confusion by not starting a new topic as it makes it much harder to keep track of things.  So I've created a new topic and wiki page

AFAIK, this project is intended to hook us up with slike minded people in order to work on projects together. Nothing with rules or deadlines. That said I do not think "socialising" counts. Not that there shouldn't be socializing shouldn't be allowed on my PD, but that it shouldn't be part of THIS project. There are plenyty of people who want to socialise. Fewer people are into the projects though, so this is a useful tool for them.

It was more, I think, a project designed to give people help with carrying out ideas and personal goals by brainstorming and so on.  People who are close to each other generally can get together on their own

This is not a project.  It's an informal census to see what goals people have in common, as a foundation to see if they would be interested in working together to accomplish them.

If this process doesn't implode before the first milestone - figuring out where everybody is - then a project (hopefully more than one) may come out of it.. but we're not there yet.

I've started a new thread to make it easier to keep track of modifications to the OP.  Also, if you already have an account at EB&G, then you automatically have an account on the wiki - it uses the same username+password.

There are no rules to editing the wiki page - anyone can.  There is full version control, so it just takes a few clicks to back-out any changes - so don't worry about breaking anything.  It's easier to ask forgiveness than permission, so just go ahead and do what you think looks right  :)

It might work better to discuss things here, and make edits there?

What I'm looking for at this stage:
Criticism/comments on the way I've split the categories.  Either rewordings or alternative suggestions for the split.

1. Maximize Freedom (7)
"Make it harder for those who seek to control other people."
"Encouraging individuals to not only think for themselves, but to get off their asses and do something about it"

2. Reality tunnel escape/intellectual improvement/think for yourself (21)
"Spread the desire to improve ones knowledge/perspectives."
  "Encourage people to question everything."
"Show people, who want to, how to attempt a BIP jailbreak."

3. Keep things strange, or more so (11)
"Demonstrate the fun awesomeness of strange shit which already exists"
  "Make more strange"

4. Have Fun (17)
  "With others - Socialising/Networking"
"Alone - being exposed to things you think of as fun"
  "Both"

5. Change Political/Cultural climate (2)
  "Change the way politics works"
  "Change cultural norms"

6. Evangelism (4)

7. Reduce Apathy (2)

8. Increase Creativity (2)
  "Through art"
  "In any form"

After reading the last couple of pages, I think I must have completely misunderstood the thinking behind the OP.

I don't know, if there are going to be rules and such, I will not be participating.  Sorry.  :|

Where are you seeing any mention of rules?

It's a valid concern, and I'm glad you brought it up.

If PD.com is to become a place of ALL GOALS ALL THE TIME!!!

No-one wants that, we're just talking about making it easier for people who want to get together to do stuff.

First step is figuring out what it is that people might want to work on together.

She totally needs to call Dr. Zizlesse.

Just imagine the possibilities....  Hot right?  :lulz:

She'll have the most erotic elbow rolls imaginable.

I vote for multiple nipples, everywhere!

I can't help wonder what would happen if that tiny little string would snap or the knot came loose.

I wasn't planning to jump back into the discussion this early but.. my biggest concern in constructing the list is that I had made the "winners" too vague and catch-all.  That said, merging is appropriate if someone put down something which upon reflection is legitimately covered by an existing category, and they want to change.

For example:

Quote from: Dr. James Semaj on February 28, 2011, 10:01:56 PM
I'd also say you could probably drop 7, since I'm the only person who had that one.

I think this would be a terrible reason to drop a category.

I'm not sure where this idea of merging/pruning categories came from:

Quote from: Captain Utopia on February 28, 2011, 04:52:32 AM
I'm looking for suggestions about any additional categories I missed, or any obvious way to split up/rearrange the existing ones.

My goal here is to represent everybody as best as possible, and then use that as a basis to devise projects which may have a broad appeal.  As it stands, I think the list is already somewhat useful in that regard - but a finer-grained list of categories would be more useful.

Open question - is there any way that #2 "Reality tunnel escape/intellectual improvement/think for yourself" and #4 "Have Fun" (the two largest groups) could be meaningfully split up?
