Aww, that's not very nice. But very well done. Even if you still completely misunderstand my intent. I think I'm going to like it here. *stretches and yawn*
MysticWicks endorsement: "Spoiled brats of the pagan world, I thought. I really don't have a lot of respect for Discordians. They just strike me as spiritually lazy."

You are making the assumption that the things you're seeing in the email are there... Most of us, seem to think you're applying the Law of Fives to the email. So I'd say you would first need to explain why these lines in an email are hyponotic, rather than fluff that you percveived as hyponotic...
Quote from: trippinprincezz13 on July 17, 2009, 09:40:26 PMNo. Yes. In a way they are a low-level form of suggestion which works on particularly suggestible people. Maybe hypnosis is too strong/loaded a word. Mind-virus?
Do you think those chain e-mails that warn you that YOU'D BETTER FORWARD THIS OR SOMETHING REALLY BAD FOR REALS WILL HAPPEN CUZ MY FRIEND DELETED IT AND HE GOT HIT BY A TRAIN! are hypnosis too?
Quote from: trippinprincezz13 on July 17, 2009, 09:40:26 PMIt's only a bodily reaction if we don't allow ourselves to bring it under our conscious control.
The mention of an orthopaedic surgeon is a bit of an appeal to authority but....so? It reads like a childhood dare (betcha can't do this!) with a reference to a doctor to make it more of a challenge (a doctor says it's impossible? - or whatever the OP said - I'll show him!!). Doesn't read like hypnosis to me and really not any different than if someone asked you in person to do it. At most it's a challenge and introduction to a quirky bodily reaction.
Quote from: trippinprincezz13 on July 17, 2009, 09:40:26 PMThat possibility occurred to me too. The interpretation rested upon whether you had vastly more insight on this matter than I. Since you haven't demonstrated such, I assumed the former. Which, as you suggest, you only have yourself to thank for.QuoteAWESOME!!!! Also, I just hypnotized you with my words to make you think I was being sarcastic. I was actually being super-srs.Quote from: trippinprincezz13 on July 17, 2009, 09:14:27 PMI get your sarcasm. It wasn't terribly subtle.
By the way, did you see the wicked cool picture I posted above?
Quote from: BADGE OF HONOR on July 17, 2009, 09:35:20 PMTrue!
If you're trolling it's one of the best trolls ever, nothing pisses off people more than deliberate stupidity.
Quote from: Ratatosk on July 17, 2009, 09:18:22 PMNot one respondent has contradicted, or even addressed the case that I've already made. That would be a pre-requisite for a stronger case.
I see it like this:
You make post about phenomena.
Several of us say "Been there, Done that in school"
You say "NO IT'S HYPNOSIS"
We say, Uhhh.... probably not, why are you still harping on this"
You say "Cause its Hypnosis, cause it worked on me!"
etc...
It might appear as hypnosis to you... but having studied hypnosis, it doesn't seem like it to me (and possibly others posting here).
I think you'd need to make a much stronger case for this to go beyond a gainsaying thread of "Yes it 'tis, No it tisn't,"
Quote from: Iptuous on July 17, 2009, 09:21:31 PMIf you don't like the troll, don't feed the troll.
as far as the OP goes, I don't think she's going to listen to your request as she's too busy eating attention....
Quote from: trippinprincezz13 on July 17, 2009, 09:14:27 PMCan you explain how all of those manipulative techniques got into that chain-letter, if it wasn't created by somebody who had the required skills and the objective to hood-wink the recipients?
What we seem to be talking about now is you trying to make one thing into something it's not so you can feel like you stumbled across something amazing.

Quote from: Ratatosk on July 17, 2009, 09:09:30 PMWhat basis/evidence do you have that it's primarily physiological? I've seen references to "patting your head and rubbing your tummy" which everyone was pretty much exposed to as a kid. For me that proves nothing, in my experience that was usually accompanied by a "hey - bet you can't do this".. which puts it back into the territory which I'm describing.
Seems to me that YOU think its hypnosis... Personally, for me, I think its a physiological phenomena which you can control with concentration. If you, personally, were not able to control it without psyching yourself up, that seems, in my opinion, to say more about your neurological system than hypnosis via email.
Quote from: Rev. What's-His-Name? on July 17, 2009, 09:02:13 PMIf you can spell it out for me, I'll happily shut up. The first post on the first page which gives anything remotely specific, refers to phys-ed in the 6th grade, which is definitely not what we're talking about now.Quote from: fictionpuss on July 17, 2009, 08:56:37 PM
The arc of this thread is pretty much what I expected. I couldn't think of a better way to present it. No-one has come out and said "Unknown persons hypnotising people through chain-mail for unknown reasons is uninteresting and old-news - check the FAQ". Until then, I guess we're having separate conversations.
Umm, I think most of the posts on the first page were saying that.
Quote from: Ratatosk on July 17, 2009, 08:59:33 PMIt's via email. It's hypnosis because it implants a suggestion which the conscious mind has difficulty contradicting, and in most cases, not at all.
I think first you'd have to mount a credible defense for claiming its hypnosis by email. As of yet I've seen no compelling reason to think this.

Haven't been able to find it yet.
Starts out with first post. Lots of people point out that it's old news and they are disinterested. It is defended with weak arguments that are also fairly old news. We arrive here.
Quote from: trippinprincezz13 on July 17, 2009, 08:36:27 PMIt's not the individual illusion that I find interesting either. Just the fact that it's an example of hypnosis-by-email, it's fairly sophisticated, and I think that's worthy of discussion.
lol what? Don't believe I ever used the words "beneath me". Merely that I didn't feel like doing it because I've done it so it's not really spectacularly amazing to me. A newer mind-trick/illusion/whatever, I'd be game, but it's the same with a lot of the visual illusions I see online lately. I'll them a go, but unless it's really really cool for reals then I'm not going to spend my time looking at the same illusion over and over. Simple as that. I'm still not sure what I'm proving that I'm above, but I'm responding to this thread because I'm bored and feel like it. Need some way to make the rest of my work last the next hour and half I'm gonna be here.
Quote from: Ratatosk on July 17, 2009, 07:48:34 PMIf you iterate prisoners dilemma through a quantum manifold, it turns out that being optimistic and hopeful about _everything_ is actually the strategy which best guarantees happiness. Or continuity of existence. When I figure out which, I'll finish the paper.
but, sometimes I think maybe I'm a bit too optimistic and hopeful.
Quote from: Darth Cupcake on July 17, 2009, 08:13:58 PMIf you think that, then you should re-read the thread. You'll find a continuity there which directly contradicts your opinion.
I think you are trying to make that ridiculous first post have more value than it does, or needs to have.

It is possible, though I think it would require a lot of work to determine where this was on the scale.
Quote from: Ratatosk on July 17, 2009, 08:21:12 PMAgreed.
To me that screams psych, in your experience. There may be a large difference there.
Quote from: Ratatosk on July 17, 2009, 08:21:12 PMAgreed. No wait, agreed.
We here are all asses, thus playing the ass doesn't work as well as it does on other sites... sorta like playing the trickster when Coyote, Raven, Ananasai and well, Ratatosk are hanging out with you. You might pull something off, but its likely that they've already done it and are wise to the tricks.
I hope that makes more sense to you than it does to me upon reading it back to myself.
