Here's an actual Greg Hill post

QuoteJust when you think you've seen it all, there pops up another one.  It is
not as if you have to read every article in alt.discordia to start to get
an inkling of what is really going on here, or there; it is more like
what you do not read could be what you miss.  What good does it do when
there is just another yellow tidbit to tide you over until the next
green, or salmon, one comes along?  Look, what we are all trying to say
is simply what cannot be put into words, right?  But it is really just
fnord fnord fnord fnord fnord.  You do not have to prove your divinity to
anyone.  You do not have to prove anything to anyone.  Fact is, you
cannot prove anything to anyone with a mind skeptical enough to filter
through all of this garbage and maintain some semblance of sanity.  Of
course, a semblance of sanity is not necessarily what we are really
looking for, though, is it?  At least not most of the time.  What is most
often desired in this apparent material world is more akin to something
wild and crazy.  Off-the-wall, whacko, out of the ordinary, curiosly odd,
fnord, interestingly different.  What seems the same too often simply is.
Perhaps this story can spark a thought:  Two young men are walking down
a country road.  The first says to the second, what a beautiful day.  I
think it is getting cool, says the first.  Let's climb this skyscraper,
suggests the third.  No way, says the first, pointing at the second,
she's afraid of heights.  I still think it is rather cool, says the
second.  Then the lonely man falls into a really big pothole in the
highway and breaks his arm.
Get it?  For those who need more, here is an obvious hint: her broken
nose does not bleed.
Ok, good.  Surily we can agree at least with this one clear point.

Inhale Eris!

looking for more traces of the elusive Greg Hill...

This may be a red herring, but I see an account named Ronald Anderson with a sig saying he's Greg Hill, and he lists [what I think is] Greg's e-mail address. Another post from Ronald Anderson says "I'm not really Ronald Anderson". He also calls himself "Pope Gregor the XXIII, Jr"... are we pointing in the right direction? Only more research will tell.

Elsewhere, somebody links to Greg's website and calls it "Hypocrites Anonymous"... but that might have been Greg Himself calling it that

I get the sense that Greg did not get along well with this group. Still trying to figure out precisely why.

In this thread, "The Search for Malaclypse", a few people speculate about how to get in contact with Greg. Robert Anderson (greg?) posts:

Quote>It's my
>belief that Mal-2 was just living in Hill's brain for a time but that
>he/she/it has now moved on. Was I mistaken?

it contains a memo about Jake Day:

QuoteSPAM JAKE DAY -- A Summary
--------------------------

By Reverend Brother Lee Harvey Oswald Smith, KSC WMD SPAM
Episkopos, John Friedrich Cabal, Discordian Society

1) WHAT IS A JAKE? (AND WHERE CAN I GET SOME?)
----------------------------------------------

A Jake is defined as part of Operation Mindfuck. Basically, it involves
a lot of people collaborating to send a lot of weird stuff to some
bureaucrat/official/someone somewhere, asking for some information/help/
whatever, preferably in an obscure or unusual way. The letters are timed to
arrive on the same day, and to make the bureaucrat/official/etc. think
that either he is the target of a global conspiracy of lunatics or the
general public are much more imaginative than he has previously thought.

2) WHAT IS THIS SPAM JAKE?
--------------------------

The plan: on Spam Jake Day (the twenty-third of May, 1994), a lot of
mail will arrive at the headquarters of Hormel Foods, the manufacturer
of Spam, from all over the world. This will be from various Discordian,
SubGenius and other weird religious groups; on official letterhead
(which looks rather weird), and from people with long, bizarre religious
titles. Each letter will claim that the sender's own group is the
original Church of Spam (with appropriate embellishments), and
requesting official endorsement from Hormel Foods as such.

3) HOW DO I GET INVOLVED?
-------------------------

If you wish to be involved in this global mindfuck, all you have to do
is write such a letter, in the name of your religion/conspiracy (if you
don't have one, found one), adding any embellishments you may wish to
add and send it to:

        Hormel Foods
         Corporate Offices
         1 Hormel Drive
         Austin, MN 55912

Send the letter before Spam Jake Day, if possible timing it so that it
arrives on Spam Jake Day. The rest is fnord up to you.

4) WHAT WILL THIS ACHIEVE?
--------------------------

With luck, somebody at Hormel will find their desk inundated with
curious missives from all sorts of strange groups from all over the
world asking for official sanction for some esoteric activity involving
Spam, or, in the parlance, "weird shit". Unable to dismiss this as a small,
localised prank they will be very much puzzled by this and possibly
shall attain illumination from the shock. Candidates for official
approval may receive interesting replies; furthermore, the media may pick
up on this, distorting it and adding further chaos to the equation.
In any case, the ripples of this should be felt far and wide, if enough
people get involved.

5) WHY SHOULD I GET INVOLVED?
-----------------------------

Because if you don't, ye shall verily be transformed into a
Precious Mao Button and distributed to the Poor in the Region of Thud.
Or not.

I used to frequent alt.discordia, until it got swamped with bots and cross-posting racists.  That's not the fault of the spags there, of course, but of the archaic nature of usenet.

HA! Me too, started around 2000 when I moved to PDX, and then the group fell under the Timothey Sutter spamtroll.

Greg's few posts are up there. The best post of his in alt.discordia was one that clarifies that Chaos =/= Disorder. Dr. John pointed me to that a few years ago (and warned that, at that point, Greg was succumbing to alcoholism). Can't seem to find where I saved that link tho.

I'm totally fascinated by this whole thread.  I'm gonna make a point of bookmarking and scouring the group Google index.  This may take some time.  If I may, anything cool I find I'll put up here.

I really wish for a copy of those tapes they mentioned from the chat with Mr. Thornley!

Aww, Cram, you warm my heart!

Most of my anecdotes from the a.d days are personal.

*I apparently said something clever once, because other active members of alt.discordia gave me the K.S.C. title that I carry today. I know it's a title people usually claim for themselves and thus is occasionally more meaningless than true or false, but it meant a lot to me back then so I carry it with me.

*One of my best posts to alt.discordia was detailing a FREE WATER prank. The idea was that water is normally free at water fountains and such, so offering people free water is somewhat suspicious if you do it right. The post detailed an idea to set up a table with little dixie cups and a FREE WATER sign. You would have the table manned by people with clipboards and surveys to ask how people felt before and after drinking the water, and possibly water jugs with different labels so you can carefully record who had which water (all filled from the same tap, of course).

This post got a pretty good response, and I think I sent myself a copy in a long-defunct archive. Unfortunately, I cannot for the life of me find it in the alt.discordia archives, so maybe it was before the Usenet archive started. If anyone finds this, I will totally send you $23. Anyways, several years later, I met a random Internet Discordian and we got to talking and he started telling me about the best post he ever read on alt.discordia. Turns out, it was this post. Kinda cool OMG moment.

*alt.discordia is where I first encountered St. Tim the Canonizer, original founder of the Church of No Dead Saints. When driving cross-country, I stayed at his home and he canonized me. That's where I picked up the Church of No Dead Saints that I run to this day.

*I'm still in touch with a few alt.discordia personalities, notably jcs bimp, Karl Musser of the Cartographer's Conspiracy Cabal, and acb (who used to run the psychoceramics mailing list, for being and discussing crackpots). Kristin Buxton is still around the internets somewhere. Her Discordian website was mentioned in RAW's _Everything is Under Control_.

I started posting to alt.discordia in ~1993 through a local dial-up BBS that had Usenet access. I was 15 at the time. I finally got my own account on the internet proper in late 1994. Alt.discordia was my first internet home, and greatly shaped the person I am today. Reading through my archives there is a mix of nostalgic and painful, fond adolescent memories and awkward "oh god, I said what?!" moments.

Sondra London is writing, not his son. She's an author, and I think was his partner for a time (?).

Oops, haha. The fact that I quoted a portion of the text implied something I didn't mean. No, with the son bit I meant in regards to this:

Quote from: Cramulus on September 20, 2011, 05:19:37 PM
and the whole time I was there he grumbled and growled again and again about how he never wanted to see his son's face again because he never appreciates his jokes.

That is actually, to me, the saddest thing about the anecdote. Like I said, I can see how this brand of humor is hard to appreciate. I have a soft spot for father-son complications, from experience. My dad was a terrible comic (by that I mean dark and hazy), but I see myself in him as days go by.

Ahhh, gotcha.

I think that's more of a 'sick old man ranting' comment, but you're right; it has a sting to it.

(I originally posted this on my Tumblr page in 2015...thought I would re-post it here as I was one of those "old fucks" ALSO you can find a few of my old alt. posts if you do a search for "finnius mental playground" ... that seems to work for me)

-------------------

I recently reread Cramulus' alt.discordia thread... http://www.principiadiscordia.com/forum/index.php?topic=30291.0 I wanted to give a few insights into what was going on back then...  First off, I laughed at the post about alt.discordia being "born" in 1993-1994. Most of the .alt sites were basically dying in 1994...believe it or not.  We grew up with bulletin board service (BBS)...and Usenet is where we would post discussions, flame wars, news, etc. This was basically from around 1983/1984 till about 1987 when our "subs" (subscriptions) were named "news." or "talk." After 1987 the newsgroups exploded and changed and "alt." subs were created.  I, and my friends, tended to post thru 3 local BBS boards in San Diego....Mental Playground, Schroedingers Catbox...and Possumhole. (Later on possum decided to zone in on the sole aspect of collecting the growing porn gifs...so most of us abandoned his board...just saying)  I personally posted a lot in alt.discordia, alt.illuminati, alt.tasteless and alt.slack...although I would foray into all kinds of other subs for fun or to dispense info or share things. I WISH there was some sort of Internet archive that stored all of our stuff...I really do. Unfortunately when Google took over the alt. boards...they only took from about 1993-up. By 1994 the internet was much faster than before. We were NOT using 300 baud or 1200 baud modems. We were still using dial-up...yes...but everything was speeding up and slowly we were getting off the phones and getting real connections. Also the "www." (The net as you know it now) was finally becoming viable and had more than a few hundred pages. By 1994 www. had exploded and everyone was jumping to it. Http was so much cooler than using a "door" program.  So what you see in the earliest of the alt.discordia subs and other old alt. sites was REALLY the tail end of an era. Our discussions, rants, flame wars, ascii art...gods...so much has been lost. It's a shame. It was so wonderful...meeting like-minded people all over the usa...posting and getting responses SLOWLY (you had to wait for major nodes to collect, update and disseminate the posts...sometimes these only occurred 1x a day... at midnight (eek!)...but it was glorious.  I can humbly say I saw ARPANET go down. I helped vote for and create smilies. I remember Mosaic...and then Netscape. I remember all kinds of discordian weirdness...and making up all kinds of illuminati "truths". Those of us that are 60+ years old... we were there...and I only wish our energy and enthusiasm was captured and preserved...for history. It really was epic.
