Quote from: Chelagoras The Boulder on August 18, 2015, 08:52:47 AMBut then i remember that humans are basically chimps, and so I see this resulting in hierarchy and a game of oneupsmanship and social status seeking within the group which leads to resentment and table-flipping as people get frustrated with the rules of who can speak about what and when. What do you guys think? Am i missing something here?

That's my take. Whilst the reason may seem logical on the surface, it's actually bullshit masquerading as an excuse to crowbar in some monkey status.

Yeah, I've seen it get taken to some pretty bullshit extremes. I've been told to my face before that I don't have the right to think critically about certain subjects, like colourism because I'm not black, or otherkin because I'm not trans(I didn't think those were the same thing, but the more you know, I guess). I asked for clarification a few times, and yes, it turns out that I didn't mishear her and she meant exactly what she said. I couldn't wrap my head around it.

I can understand that I'm probably less informed on those subjects than someone who has to deal with them in their daily life, and I should therefore probably defer to them instead of jumping in half-cocked and acting on assumptions, but I was also told that I shouldn't ask people any questions, and that instead I should show up to discussions having read the correct blogs ahead of time and decided on an opinion someone else had arrived on. This too is no exaggeration.

To install Fedora:

Drown said tablet in pony blood at midnight, in front of a mirror, while chanting "M'uh Lady". You must be in an euphoric state of mind.

Not due to the blessing of some phony god, of course. But because, you are enlightened by your own intelligence.

I am not sure what it is he thinks he stands to gain from alienating biologists, except maybe a cult foll... oh.

Yep.  Guru syndrome.

He'll be the Dr Oz of the anti-GMO crowd by this time next year, having pissed away his credibility for said cult following.

Sort of like how nobody remembers Dawkin's actual work.

Why would he even want this? One of the core elements of his philosophy is that unpredictable elements make you stronger. Why would anyone with that basic worldview ever choose to surround themselves with sycophants? Has he been an idiot all along?

It would definitely be interesting.  If I were advising the Republicans, I'd suggest they try and focus on a social conservatism that is ethnically inclusive, but religiously derived.  That kind of message could allow them to capture significant black and latino votes, not to mention possibly even win back the Muslim vote (if they toned down the explicitly Christian appeal).

However, given the prominence with which the term "cuckservative" is being used, it seems if anything they're retreating into race-based psychosexual panic of the most hysterical kind.

They severely missed the boat in terms of actually using their religious platform to their best advantage. If they had gone with racial and cultural inclusiveness, they could have the black, the Latino, a lot of the Asian, and possibly even the moderate Muslim vote. They could have left the racists with the historically racist Democrats, and nobody but the rich would be getting abortions or birth control.

It's really for the best that they're stupid, I guess.

I wonder if Colin Powell is interested in running. As a prez candidate or even running mate (though VP would be less ideal) he might be able to bridge the racial gaps, "be strong" on military and intelligence, restore credibility to the Republicans, and make for 2 nonwhite executive elections in a row. Republicans could even intentionally and overtly suggest comparison to promote the idea.

Colin Powell could save the Republican Party and The US, but he's not running. :(
I'd vote for him.

Powell will never run, because his wife has some mental health issues, and he won't put her through that.  He's made that absolutely clear over the last few election cycles.

Also, he's more than a little horrified at the moment, by his own admission.

It's such a nice pipe dream, though. Imagine an election in which both candidates treat each other with respect.

That's an interesting proposition. I imagine a Powell presidency wouldn't be much different from a Clinton presidency on a practical level, but it could have the long-term effect of fostering greater tolerance within the Republican party. Colin Powell himself seems like a perfectly reasonable conservative, one who looks positively centrist by today's standards. Someone with a preference for low taxes, strong military, and small government, but not a suicidally ideological preference. It could pull them back from the brink while stripping them of the qualities that make them so repellent at present.

Sanders vs. Powell 2012: No matter who wins, we win.

So, tonight, while bartending, a wine glass flew off its rack to the floor, untouched. I was six feet away, and nobody else was behind the bar. The four people sitting at the bar all saw the same thing I did, apparently.

Not suggesting anything other than that it was fucking weird.

Could have been internal stress within the glass releasing abruptly, breaking the glass and causing it to leap from the rack. Spontaneous fracture happens frequently in bar glassware, because it is typically soda-lime glass, not always annealed well, used frequently, and typically subjected to high temperatures during washing. This, along with daily taps and bangs, gradually introduces additional stress into the glass, along with stress that was present at manufacture due to poor annealing processes, and glasses can abruptly release that stress in the form of kinetic energy, jumping at fracture or even exploding. The thicker parts of the glass, such as stem or base, are both more likely to build stress and capable of releasing more energy at fracture; in the upper part of the glass you're more likely to see a spontaneous circular crack.

I keep forgetting you used to blow glass. You must have all kinds of hyperspecialized glass expertise that comes up either way more or way less often than it should.

I don't think she's saying that at all, but that's just my 2 cents.

These are great! Wacoms do indeed rule  :fnord:

There's a free alternative to photoshop, which will do everything you need it to do to keep on drawing: http://www.gimp.org/

There's also an inexpensive drawing program called Clip Studio Paint (previously called Manga Studio), which has all sorts of great bells and whistles for tablet illustration. It's what I use these days. http://www.clipstudio.net/en

Best wishes and keep up the great work!

Thanks, I'm installing GIMP as I speak. I should have some more work up later on this week.

"If Sanders can't stand up to some crazy-ass offshoot of BlackLivesMatter, how can he stand up to Putin?  When the 3am call comes, will Sanders just give the stage over to ISIS?"

Interesting stuff:

If it gains any traction, I'll have to re-revise the odds.  Some.

The site seems to be down. Interesting.

It works just fine for me. But then, I am a filthy Canadian.

For the better part of my life, I've had an interest in learning how to make visual art. Due to various circumstances beyond my control, I never really got a chance to properly practice those skills, but recently I've had more free time on my hands, and enough money to buy a Wacom tablet. About a month ago, I picked up a free trial of Photoshop CS6, and although the trial expired today, I think I've developed my skills to the point of presentability. So I'm gonna show off. A lot of these are gonna be related in some way to tabletop games.

Jose Trejo, a character I wrote up for a homebrew RPG based on the high-camp manga JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.

Another player's characters from a Pathfinder game I'm in: The bookish, timid summoner Fenney and his eidolon Jess. Jess is the real character; as far as roleplaying goes Fenney's just along for the ride.

If I can get my hands on another art program, there'll be more to come. Criticism is welcomed.

So, you don't play Dungeons & Dragons. You read about it.
I played the video games. I'm *that guy*

Not D&D.
Don't be *that guy*

I'll be that guy. Tabletop gaming is one of the only ways anti-social asshats are forced to interact with other humans. Playing D&D online is like dating by telegram.

I'm actually in a couple of Pathfinder games over Skype and they've gone pretty well. Kept me borderline sane when I was alone in Calgary.

Welp, I finally quit my job. My boss had started harassing me(and random passers-by, for that matter) on a daily basis, so I figured it was time for a change of scenery.

I feel ya.  Unfortunately, finding another straight job has been problematic.  Income is no problem, but my skills are gonna rust.

I'm a step ahead of you; I have no job skills to lose. But fuck it. My grandparents are graciously letting me stay with them, so I don't strictly need the money for now, and I wasn't really getting any benefit from it that I wouldn't get going outside every day. He was an unreliable source of income as it was, and you know what they call someone who sticks around and takes shit for no guarantee of peanuts? A slave.

That being said, I do need to brush up on my jobhunting skills.
