Is it because they want ionic buildup of some sort? It's an incredible feat, but WHY tho?

stability.  The telescope doesn't vibrate at all.

The thought of that much raw material on a perfectly stable platform gives me a weird feeling. Like on par with anything I ever heard of as an ancient wonder but completely new and only a means to an even more improbable end... looking at the particulars of other systems from right here on Earth, am I right?
