Title: Fuck you, my mom died from improper arguing!
Post by: LMNO on September 12, 2012, 07:52:06 PM
In light of several discussions that got out of hand, I'm pretty much just going to cut and paste this entire blog post:

http://lesswrong.com/lw/85h/better_disagreement/

__________________________________________________________________________

Now that most communication is remote rather than face-to-face, people are comfortable disagreeing more often. How, then, can we disagree well? If the goal is intellectual progress, those who disagree should aim not for name-calling but for honest counterargument.

To be more specific, we might use a disagreement hierarchy. Below is the hierarchy proposed by Paul Graham (with DH7 added by Black Belt Bayesian).

DH0: Name-Calling. The lowest form of disagreement, this ranges from "u r fag!!!" to "He's just a troll" to "The author is a self-important dilettante."

DH1: Ad Hominem. An ad hominem ('against the man') argument won't refute the original claim, but it might at least be relevant. If a senator says we should raise the salary of senators, you might reply: "Of course he'd say that; he's a senator." That might be relevant, but it doesn't refute the original claim: "If there's something wrong with the senator's argument, you should say what it is; and if there isn't, what difference does it make that he's a senator?"

DH2: Responding to Tone. At this level we actually respond to the writing rather than the writer, but we're responding to tone rather than substance. For example: "It's terrible how flippantly the author dimisses theology."

DH3: Contradiction. Graham writes: "In this stage we finally get responses to what was said, rather than how or by whom. The lowest form of response to an argument is simply to state the opposing case, with little or no supporting evidence." For example: "It's terrible how flippantly the author dismisses theology. Theology is a legitimate inquiry into truth."

DH4: Counterargument. Finally, a form of disagreement that might persuade! Counterargument is "contradiction plus reasoning and/or evidence." Still, counterargument is often directed at a minor point, or turns out to be an example of two people talking past each other, as in the parable about a tree falling in the forest.

DH5: Refutation. In refutation, you quote (or paraphrase) a precise claim or argument by the author and explain why the claim is false, or why the argument doesn't work. With refutation, you're sure to engage exactly what the author said, and offer a direct counterargument with evidence and reason.

DH6: Refuting the Central Point. Graham writes: "The force of a refutation depends on what you refute. The most powerful form of disagreement is to refute someone's central point." A refutation of the central point may look like this: "The author's central point appears to be X. For example, he writes 'blah blah blah.' He also writes 'blah blah.' But this is wrong, because (1) argument one, (2) argument two, and (3) argument three."

DH7: Improve the Argument, then Refute Its Central Point. Black Belt Bayesian writes: "If you're interested in being on the right side of disputes, you will refute your opponents' arguments. But if you're interested in producing truth, you will fix your opponents' arguments for them. To win, you must fight not only the creature you encounter; you [also] must fight the most horrible thing that can be constructed from its corpse."

Having names for biases and fallacies can help us notice and correct them, and having labels for different kinds of disagreement can help us zoom in on the parts of a disagreement that matter.

_____________________________________________________________

This won't fix what's already been broken, and this probably won't stop all the flare-ups we have, but at least we have some sort of framework when things start getting out of hand.

Paul Graham rocks. (http://www.paulgraham.com/articles.html) I have never regretting starting to read an essay of his, and they can be long and go on all kinds of tangents.
There's a graphical representation (of Graham's original version, without level 7) (https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/File:Graham's_Hierarchy_of_Disagreement.svg), which might be a good emoticon. :lulz:

This is the correct motorcycle.

I'm glad everyone is starting to see why myself and Kai and LMNO read the place obsessively.

Incidentally, in many ways DH7 is the Ultimate Troll, especially if you do it well enough to cause cognitive dissonance in the person you are arguing with, and cause them to disagree with their former comrades.

Yes.  They either accept the criticisms, in which case you win, or they suffer from massive cognitive dissonance and spazz out...in which case, you win.

Win-win scenarios are best scenarios.

Wait i think i got it. So what you do is refute the central point but then argue for a more extreme version of it at the same time so that they think theyre disagreeing with you because youre the one thats wrong. But whats actually happened is that youve convinced them of your view point in the best case scenario but cut off their route for taking there original premise further. Is that what it is?
Title: Re: Fuck you, my mom died from improper arguing!

The example given in LW is here: http://commonsenseatheism.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/Wielenberg-Dawkins-Gambit-Humes-Aroma-and-Gods-Simplicity.pdf

Basically, the author says that Dawkins' argument is a poor derivative of Hume, and he goes on to improve Dawkins' central point.  He then proceeds to tear that improved argument apart.

Or, to take a more relevant example, there have been a few time in AI where someone will make a stupid claim about international politics, and Cain will first correct their stupidity regarding the facts on the ground; and after that he will proceed to thrash the premise of their entire argument.

Another example:

Say you're arguing with a guy who says that Paul Ryan is smart because his budget plan clearly shows it would reduce the deficit.

So, in DH7, you would first point out that Ryan's plan is build on two magic asterixes which assert, rather than prove, that revenues will be increased over time, giving no means of why or how that would happen.  You then correct his plan to show an actual working budget based upon austerity and supply side economics.  You then destroy that improved budget by showing that austerity measures in a liquidity trap are retarded, using Neo-Keynesian economic theory.

There are too many of them not to. While some people can be reasonable and logical, it turns out that a surprisingly few people who are interested in actual facts and evidence end up agreeing with the Teabillies in the first place. And, since it is (at least in LMNOs example) the Teabilly Mythos that is being addressed, there is a low probability of encountering someone who believes what the Teabillies say, but is not immune to logic.

Its funny, because I don't recall saying "never try to argue with anyone who self-identifies with a group with a large number of people who are immune to rational argument".

No you didn't say that, and I didn't say you said that. I do not disagree with you. What I mean is that sooner or later you're going to hit a situation where very large, very important events hinge on beliefs that are only held by people who shun rational argument. It's invaluable to know how to carry out a proper argument, and how to avoid the pitfalls that lead to the kinds of "arguments" that have been going around here lately.

However, about half of the humans out there (on a good day) -- a percentage very much large enough to do important things like elect governments -- do not subscribe to the idea of logical argument, and are effectively immune from reason. However disproven they may be by logic and reason, they are not dissuaded by them.

WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, and IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH

It might not be on posters but we get it drummed into us from birth, regardless. Makes us immune to logic. It has to, otherwise we'd be pawns up for grabs. Some of us shake the programming somehow and, in doing so, immediately become wilcards and potential enemies of the state. The ones who don't are largely immune to our influence, unless we find an effective method of hacking their conditioning. Appeals to logic are pointless, their logic is broken, short circuited, warped.

Thus the game is set.

For example you may be able to convince someone who believes that ufos are spaceships that while that maybe the case its not proven and while its ok to believe thats a possibilty to not declare it to be the truth and keep an open but skeptical mind, once they get into the whole reptilian shapeshifter territory its a safe bet youre bot going to make any headway. When confronted with a teabagger youll be able to figure out fairly quickly whether or not theyll actually listen to your points or if theyre completely closed off to new info.

With the conspiracy theorist trying to change their minds will get you labeled as a disinfo agent an illuminatus or a shapeshifting reptile. With the teabagger who cant be convinced theyll just brush you off as a member of the muslim kgb. Bad programming has its own antivirus software. Or rather antiantivirus software. Once you program yourself with that mindset the program resists any challenges to it. Pents dead on about the hacking bit.

As it was said in the thread about vegetarians, the problem arises when a person's belief becomes their identity. Attacking the belief is inherently a personal attack, because without the belief they are nothing. It's also why it leads so directly to ad-hominem attacks in defense. They don't comprehend any logical difference between me telling a Teabagger that Obama is actually a fairly average president, and him telling me I'm a socialist scumbag who needs to move to Iran so I can live in a godless dystopia where welfare-dependent women have abortions just to make baby Jesus cry.

Their arguments are absurd, because they are completely devoid of a logical basis. But just try telling them that. No, they think they're making all the sense in the world, because, well, they just are and that's how God intended it to be, so there. There is no such thing as "open to new info." New Info itself is the exact thing they are opposed to, often explicitly. UFO nuts might tell you they understand that not all UFOs are alien space ships, they might even actually understand that. But they won't believe it. They won't stop thinking they are alien space ships. As long as you allow for the possibility that they are right, they will interpret it as a guarantee that they are right. And if you don't allow for the possibility, then you're just a close-minded drone who believes everything NASA tells you. And they'll take that as evidence that somebody important is trying to stop them from believing "The Truth."

It isn't a question of "how crazy are these people?" It's a question of "how can we make them stop breathing oxygen on my planet faster?"

Step one - destroy the critical logic faculty.

Step two - install circular logic pattern in it's place.

Bingo! Your virus will now aggressively defend itself against logic or rival brainwashing.

Step three - Jihad - point your meat puppet army at your rival's, sit back and watch the pretty lights

No one is immune to logic.  Sure people have defenses against it, but ideas incubate, and the right question can destroy any rigid belief.

As I said. Dumb as a hollowed out loaf of bread.

Now that's an expression!

Actually.... I'm in the process of going through that thread again. Must crash, but will finish tomorrow. Preliminary reports indicate that he is NOT dumb. He's reaching for perspective and found this place. The poor bastard.

Our Common Enemy, you have my attention. When I'm caught up we'll see about a chat, if you Will sir.

"Our common enemy has long since won."

Not quite the person to assert that logic will overcome adversity, isn't it?

Congruency isn't one of my strong points.
It would be a mistake to think that I actually agree with my current self, much less my 2-years-ago self.

Why wouldn't you agree with yourself?

Just not so simple as to presume that I understand my own thinking.  /shrug
Besides, this isn't meant to be an introduction thread and I have no intention of hijacking it.

Quite sorry that it seems to have derailed so.

Yeah, "enlightenment." I mean, if you preemptively declare yourself "possibly wrong," then it doesn't how much bullshit comes out in the next breath. It's GENIUS.

Of course, it also means if you say something smart, it's only by accident.

I prefer to think of it as immaturity.

But as long as I'm gazing at my navel I don't have my head up my ass...
